Which stadiums will be allowed to host fans from Gameweek 11?

Back in March, hardly anyone would have predicted that it would have been the festive season before fans were allowed to return to watch a Premier League match.

Yet here we are, nine months on, and the UK Government have now announced which of the Premier League clubs will be able to welcome some fans back into stadiums after the lockdown in England ends on December 2.

The decisions on the tier system in the UK means that we now know which of the ten Premier League matches in Gameweek 11 will be allowed to be played in front of fans.

The following fixtures are due to be played in tier 2 areas of England and therefore they will be permitted to be staged in front of 2,000 fans:

  • Brighton v Southampton
  • Chelsea v Leeds
  • Liverpool v Wolves
  • Tottenham v Arsenal
  • West Ham v Manchester United

Currently, 10 of the 20 Premier League grounds sit in tier 2 locations. These stadiums will therefore be able to have fans when their teams play at home:

  • The Emirates (Arsenal)
  • The Amex (Brighton)
  • Stamford Bridge (Chelsea)
  • Selhurst Park (Crystal Palace)
  • Goodison Park (Everton)
  • Craven Cottage (Fulham)
  • Anfield (Liverpool)
  • St Mary’s (Southampton)
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Spurs)
  • London Stadium (West Ham)

This leaves the following grounds unable to welcome fans back currently, as they sit in tier 3 areas of the country:

  • Villa Park (Aston Villa)
  • Turf Moor (Burnley)
  • Elland Road (Leeds)
  • The King Power (Leicester)
  • The Etihad (Manchester City)
  • Old Trafford (Manchester United)
  • St James’ Park (Newcastle)
  • Bramall Lane (Sheffield United)
  • The Hawthorns (West Brom)
  • Molineux Stadium (Wolves)

These restrictions will be reviewed on December 16 and stadiums may move between the tiers depending upon infection rates in those areas.

Should a club’s stadium be in an area that moves from tier 2 to tier 3, they will once again be unable to host supporters. Likewise, if the area that the stadium is in moves from tier 3 to tier 2, they will be allowed to have 2,000 fans in the stadium once more.

Has behind-closed-doors football had an impact on the Premier League so far?

Under the rules of the new system, tier 2 stadiums will be allowed to welcome 2,000 home fans back. However, no away supporters will be permitted at matches under existing government legislation as a result of restrictions on travel to reduce the rate of infection.

These rules on Premier League matches will also apply to the League Cup when the quarter-finals are played in December, as well as to European matches in both the Champions League and the Europa League.

Will fans in stadiums make a difference?

The news that fans will be allowed back into ten of the Premier League grounds is a significant step on the path to normality. But will this see the return of the home advantage and have an impact on the games and results that are played in front of spectators?

We have seen that home stadiums haven’t been the fortresses that they once were without the cauldrons of noise that the home fans usually create. The atmosphere has been lacking since March and the players themselves regularly comment on a desire to have fans back in the stadiums. But how much of a difference can 2,000 fans wearing masks make in a stadium that is meant to hold 60,000? In the newer grounds, such as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the acoustics were designed to carry the sound and keep it inside the stadium and so the noise of 2,000 fans, who have been desperate to see their team live again, may be greater than we appreciate.

In the older stadiums, such as Craven Cottage, the noise and impact that a reduced crowd makes may be less impactful as a result of the dated architecture.

Having said that, the mere presence of any fans in the stadium could be a huge motivational drive.

The impact of fans in some stadiums and not in others may change the way we view our transfers and captaincy, should there be an upturn in home performances and results in the weeks ahead.

I haven’t seen it talked about much but isn’t it a little unfair that some teams will have fans whilst others won’t? After all the fuss of not wanting to play in neutral grounds for project restart I’m surprised most clubs appear to have just accepted this. Surely it’s an advantage for teams allowed fans?

Still the reality is you may now have a team with fans at every home match and some that may go the entire season with none. Doesn't feel right to me. I appreciate the effort to get fans back but in a sporting sense most people would see having home supporters as an advantage.

Doubt it's an advantage with dispersed 'non-singing/shouting' fans. Unfair on the fans who want entertainment and the clubs who need gate revenue. Cue ticket touts & astronomical price rises on ebay, etc. #Not thought out

What do you suggest should happen instead?

No fans be allowed in until all clubs can allow them back in?

Either all should be allowed or none would be fairer in my opinion. Tbh I totally support it outside the Prem as a lot of clubs rely on the revenue fans generate, but the Prem clubs don't rely on it as much.

The more I think of it, the more I feel KDB could be a better option than Vardy. Just seems to me that Salah-KDB-Bruno is the power midfield we want for december. Even if Vardy (C) v Fulham is very tempting. Currently still going with Vardy instead of KDB, but it's closer each minute.

Vardy is a 1 to 2 week punt for the fixtures.

Long term KDB-Salah-Bruno much better picks

I think GW14 is when you want to get rid of Vardy. Next four are very good. But bring him in now and getting rid in GW14 surely will come with a hit, if not two.

If you bring in KDB, baring injuries, he could be a keeper until GW23. That being said, it means you can still jump on the wagon in GW13-14-15, with still a lot of green fixtures ahead.

I am going without Salah and playing Vardy only in the next two. Vardy becomes Brewster and Podence becomes Salah to give me this power midfield starting GW12:

                  Salah Sterling Bruno Son Ziyech

Will Nkounkou definitely play? You will have just two playing defenders if he does not.

Good article and of course FFS is right to consider the fantasy implications of fans being let back but putting aside the triviality, it'll be absolutely fantastic just to see people back in doing something they love which is watching football live, singing and cheering etc.

Once the Midlands comes out of this lockdown I am going to try and to go as many matches as possible, even if that means seeing Baggies reserves play Ipswich U23s =)

Why on average only 2,000 fans in a 60,000 seated stadium? Surely a larger number would qualify with social distancing norms over 3 hrs if managed right?

Working a social distancing of 2m - that works out at 9,000 approx fans per stadium safely. Are we just being far too cautious? Or are we too worried they may sing 😉

That would be far too logical...
My bet is that someone said it would be unfair for Pool/United etc to have 10,000 fans (i.e. one every 6 seats) and the clubs with smaller stadia only allowed 2000 fans.

I guess it could be argued that if there were positive COVID cases amongst fans it would be easier to track 'n trace the 2,000, rather than 10,000.

                  I agree.

These health and safety zealots are getting a way too much power for my liking.

I think they could have at least 10k fans in a stadium with a capacity of 60k no problem and let them shout, sing, chant and strip off to their underwear if they so feel like it.

I read an interesting study by the University of Copenhagen about the effectiveness of face masks and looking at the results of that you might as well be going around in public wearing a strap on dildo for all the good it will do for you. I think they should not be mandatory and it should be left up to the individual if they want to wear one.

Agree for the most part. It stands to reason that a facemask won't protect you, but may protect others(and me), especially in this forum, if you cough, splutter or sneeze, unless you have a hand in front of your face to deflect it away from others in the conversation 😉

Back to your point ÓGIE: Humorous 🙂 HSE has always banked on max. bonus points based on min risk. We need to calm down and get a little perspective of life itself. If we allow safety to take over our lives; well then; just stay indoors; risk is everywhere!

                      Spot on.

Risk is part of life and you just have to cope with it or you will have no life at all.

I have to manage risk every time i go to work and some of the jobs i take on such as roofing and steel erection are statistically some of the most dangerous out there but that does not stop me from doing them.

I am sick up to my teeth of this mass pussyifaction of society and we can't give into these nutters trying to control every aspect of our lives which from i am seeing has little to do with health and safety but a lot more to do with power and control.

Agree with your point of view. Tough projects you have there, but would much prefer to work a tough day than bow out to a climate of fear. If I can't do my job, I'll do someone else's who's fearful of getting in the firing line. I had a bad flu/chest infection (no sympathy required 🙂 ) which knocked me out for 5 days when I had to work 16 hours a day. I had no choice, but to work through it as the project was important. It was rough! When it's not optional you just get on with it without the drama

Hi, 1FT here and planning to save it..

                Rate My Team?

                Team:

                Martinez

                Robertson - Coufal - KWP
                Son - Salah - Fernandes (C) - Grealish - Ziyech
                Jimenez - Calvert.

Subs: Steer. - Mitchell, Brewster, Lamptey (suspended for 1 GW)

                ITB: 0.3

Only issue I have is basically no bench for the week.

The plan eventually is to get Vardy somehow in the near future.

Appreciate your thoughts and comments gents (and ladies) ! 🙂

Vardy (c) in for GW10 v FUL appeals because if Aguero starts/looks decent in GW10 bring Aguero (c) in for GW11 v FUL.Thoughts on this?

As my personal general rule, I have never taken a player fresh out of injuries after seeing 1-2 FULL games of him first, that includes Aguero unfortunately.... but yeah, its time for Vardy!
