Budget goalkeeper Johnstone good for FPL save points as Baggies come under siege

West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Conor Gallagher (£5.5m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) x3, Gallagher x2, Semi Ajayi (£4.8m) x1

A first-half goal from Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) secured a crucial victory for West Bromwich Albion over fellow strugglers Sheffield United.

So perilous are the positions of both teams that the game had ‘vastly important’ stamped all over it.

But from a Fantasy perspective, its significance was considerably more niche.

Unpopularity Contest

No player, from either side, went into the match with double-digit ownership levels in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

The most popular asset on display was Rhian Brewster (£4.5m and 6.2%), who was given a second straight bit-part role by United boss Chris Wilder and remains painfully short of confidence, minutes and chances.

The match was far from boring – the 39 shots both sides managed between them was the most in a Premier League game this season. It just lacked anyone with the (relative) quality required to convert the eight big chances created on the day.

Future Imperfect

So are there any players from either side currently worth investing in?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: nope.

Neither team’s immediate schedule is overly promising.

The Baggies do have Crystal Palace at home and then a trip to Newcastle up next, but things turn sour (mci AVL liv LEE ARS) after that.

The Blades, meanwhile, face Leicester, Southampton and Manchester United next, although their Christmas fixtures (bha EVE bur cry) are a bit more accommodating.

West Brom have tightened up at the back since securing their first clean sheet of the campaign in Gameweek 5, conceding just five goals in as many matches.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) has impressed in that time and he brought in 11 points against Sheffield thanks to six saves and the maximum bonus award.

He’s now joint-top, with Newcastle’s Karl Darlow (£5.0m), for saves (44) and only six ‘keepers have more FPL points than him.

At least investing in Johnstone won’t be boring, but the key Fantasy factor regarding both West Brom and Sheffield United at present involves who in your team might get the chance to face one or other of them in the next few weeks.

Because whether they’re at the back or in attack, there are points to be had.

Reaction Round-Up

Wilder was his usual blunt and honest self post-match:

We’ve got nobody to blame but ourselves. If you don’t take your chances and don’t show that quality in and around the box or the penalty area, you’re not going to win games of football.

West Brom coach Slaven Bilic was, obviously, rather more upbeat:

It’s a great boost for our confidence and for the games that are coming.

But it’s going to take a lot more, from both teams, to persuade Fantasy managers to invest in any of their assets any time soon.

In fact, the main interest at present revolves around why so many are still grimly holding on to Brewster.

Yes, he’s cheap, but he’s managed just two shots on target and eight points from six joyless appearances thus far.

West Bromwich Albion XI (5-3-2): Johnstone; Townsend (Phillips 75), Bartley, Ivanovic, Ajayi, Furlong; Gallagher, Sawyers, M Pereira; C Robinson (Robson-Kanu 65), Grant (Krovinovic 75).

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; K Bryan (Lundstram 63), Egan, Basham; Lowe, Fleck, Norwood (Brewster 54), Berge, Baldock; McBurnie, Burke (Mousset 74).

At the start of the season, I told my minileague mates I was all in for Kane. They mocked.

Now 90k rank and 104.8 value.

      I owe it to Kane.

He’ll by the top scorer this year. To lose him is madness.

Uhhh. He definitely will not be top scorer. Bruno, Salah will both beat him easily. Probably kdb too

Dude Kane is classed as a fwd. He has zero chance of being top scorer. It will be Salah most likely followed by Bruno. And bruno and salah are only 12 and 13 points behind with 1 game less played each. Spurs have stopped going goal crazy too.

Hmm, I think if Spurs were to get a decent amount of pens going forward he has a great chance (only had 1 pen do far).
He’s going to score fairly regularly, has assists now in his locker and he’s quite good on the BAPs.

If he stays fit and gets a fair amount of pens I think he could well do it.

He's still classed as a fwd and will get 1 less points for every goal and no clean sheet points. He won't be top scorer in fpl.

I do think it will end up being a mid yes, but I wouldn’t say definite.

If Spurs do the unthinkable and win the league, he (and Son) will have likely been involved in 90% of their goals in a winning campaign - that alone will be close to topping the charts

Ok yes can't be 100% sure. Just usually its always been a mid past few years. I don't expect it to change. Kane couldn't go over 224 points in his best season when he scored 29 goals. I don't think he'll reach that many goals since he's playing as chief creator now. And assists give less points.

Who knows, it could be Son’s season.
Be interesting to know the last time a striker was top points scorer...I feel like it’s probably Aguero or RVP.

Even in the Leicester season I think it was Mahrez who was top overall

Ok, poor move by me. Ans you’re probably right. But Kane is still a great pick IMO. Fixtures are tough right now and this was his first blank in eight weeks.

Obviously he's still a great pick. He just won't be top scorer. I personally prefer having Son due to the money saved and also cheap strikers are providing great value so if i had Kane it would take away the slot.

That's right, the scoring system is very biased against forwards. Kane's career high for a season was 224 points, which required 29 goals and 7 assists. For comparison, Salah got more than that last season in a relatively poor season for his standards, with only 19 goals and 10 assists.

In b) I won’t be able to afford Salah

I went Son to KDB and Zaha to Tielemans for a one week punt with my 2 FTs in the current GW. The second transfer is not my typical move as I tend to buy fir long stretches.

    Martinez
    Robbo, Chillwell, Coufal (Lamptey, Mitchell)
    KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Zaha (Bissouma)

Wow. That’s tough. The -8 makes it way too risky in my opinion.
Literally every player you plan to sell could give you a big haul any given week. But you are bringing in two elite FPL players and a decent-ish 7th/8th attacker.

I’d probably do it after much procrastination

Here's a good one, rank these in order of essentialness:

    2. Bruno
    3. Kdb

    1. Jolly Good
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

    2. LSK
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

2 is the most essential as he is the cheapest and has outscored the other two since his arrival in the EPL.

      1,2,3

    4. Big boy Bowen
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

      2,1,3 Long term

      3,1.2 Short term

The things to consider with Bruno is:

      1) He’s the cheapest
      2) He has been hauling even with United not particularly firing, imagine if they were firing

    5. Clintymints
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

A combo of either 2 is probably realistic for most.

Bruno's points don't lie. He is immense and should have had another goal or two today. KdB looks immense and can haul any week. Salah is Salah, is it better to have a combo of Bruno + KdB and have Jota/Robertson for Pool cover?
