Budget goalkeeper Johnstone good for FPL save points as Baggies come under siege

West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Conor Gallagher (£5.5m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) x3, Gallagher x2, Semi Ajayi (£4.8m) x1

A first-half goal from Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) secured a crucial victory for West Bromwich Albion over fellow strugglers Sheffield United.

So perilous are the positions of both teams that the game had ‘vastly important’ stamped all over it.

But from a Fantasy perspective, its significance was considerably more niche.

Unpopularity Contest

No player, from either side, went into the match with double-digit ownership levels in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

The most popular asset on display was Rhian Brewster (£4.5m and 6.2%), who was given a second straight bit-part role by United boss Chris Wilder and remains painfully short of confidence, minutes and chances.

The match was far from boring – the 39 shots both sides managed between them was the most in a Premier League game this season. It just lacked anyone with the (relative) quality required to convert the eight big chances created on the day.

Future Imperfect

So are there any players from either side currently worth investing in?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: nope.

Neither team’s immediate schedule is overly promising.

The Baggies do have Crystal Palace at home and then a trip to Newcastle up next, but things turn sour (mci AVL liv LEE ARS) after that.

The Blades, meanwhile, face Leicester, Southampton and Manchester United next, although their Christmas fixtures (bha EVE bur cry) are a bit more accommodating.

West Brom have tightened up at the back since securing their first clean sheet of the campaign in Gameweek 5, conceding just five goals in as many matches.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) has impressed in that time and he brought in 11 points against Sheffield thanks to six saves and the maximum bonus award.

He’s now joint-top, with Newcastle’s Karl Darlow (£5.0m), for saves (44) and only six ‘keepers have more FPL points than him.

At least investing in Johnstone won’t be boring, but the key Fantasy factor regarding both West Brom and Sheffield United at present involves who in your team might get the chance to face one or other of them in the next few weeks.

Because whether they’re at the back or in attack, there are points to be had.

Reaction Round-Up

Wilder was his usual blunt and honest self post-match:

We’ve got nobody to blame but ourselves. If you don’t take your chances and don’t show that quality in and around the box or the penalty area, you’re not going to win games of football.

West Brom coach Slaven Bilic was, obviously, rather more upbeat:

It’s a great boost for our confidence and for the games that are coming.

But it’s going to take a lot more, from both teams, to persuade Fantasy managers to invest in any of their assets any time soon.

In fact, the main interest at present revolves around why so many are still grimly holding on to Brewster.

Yes, he’s cheap, but he’s managed just two shots on target and eight points from six joyless appearances thus far.

West Bromwich Albion XI (5-3-2): Johnstone; Townsend (Phillips 75), Bartley, Ivanovic, Ajayi, Furlong; Gallagher, Sawyers, M Pereira; C Robinson (Robson-Kanu 65), Grant (Krovinovic 75).

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; K Bryan (Lundstram 63), Egan, Basham; Lowe, Fleck, Norwood (Brewster 54), Berge, Baldock; McBurnie, Burke (Mousset 74).

Looking at DCL Son to Bamford KDB (-4) this upcoming GW.
Looks like decent time to cash IN on DCL and need a City attacker to ©. Risky yes with high EO of Son DCL but I'm at 3m+ OR so need to take slight risks as well.

Risky but could pay off well. DCL/Son looking fixture proof to some degree though.
Same can be said of the two you would be bringing too though.

Don't want to let Vardy Bruno go to land KDB. So Son only option atm.

DCL for cash. Their fixtures are turning sooner than later. Digne injury should be a huge loss for them IMO.

Consider seeing if Pope will be back for the weekend. The new keeper looks somewhat lacking in confidence if 5-0 means nothing. Arsenal losing at home to a blah Wolves side is something to consider as well. Then see what Fulham do against Leicester of course. And then what happens in the CL midweek. And maybe what the weather forecast is for the upcoming weekend fixtures. And the press conferences for injuries. And maybe see a fortune teller with a crystal ball, I haven't tried that yet myself.

I was in the same boat before. Last season i captained KDB only once . Infact in my fpl career i have capped him only twice(this week being the other time). Because i thought its better to have a player who is always closer to the goal as your captain. But KDB is somewhat different. He can get an assist from anywhere in the opponents half. And there are always chances that he creates that should be turned in. His goal threat is not much but on pens he makes complete sense.

I was so sure about getting Raz but the quotes from Pep making me stay away. kDB is the one I'll get yep.
Hopefully i won't be priced out before Thursday as I have exact money. Can't pull early transfers with CL EL games to go

I might myself roll the dice on Raz. Even if he plays 90 he will start in the PL. No way he misses 3 EPl games in a row. Having said that i wouldn't want to keep him in my team longer than that.

My plan was to move Regulión and Son to KDB and Nkounkou next week but the Cancelo benching has put a bit of a spanner in the works. Team would be:

    Martinez
    Robertson Chilwell Cancelo
    Salah Bruno KDB Grealish Jota
    DCL Watkins
    Forster Brewster Nkounkou Mitchell

If Cancelo starts midweek, would you still do the moves and risk playing with 10?

Or take a -8, switch out Cancelo to someone like RJames or Bellerin so I can at least switch Regulión to a playing cheap defender?

    Cheers!

Cheers Amey; yeah, seems like a bit of a kneejerk to get rid a week after I bought him in. That said, I’m all for correcting clangers as quickly as possible. Will revisit towards the end of the week.

Lol. Do you really have four left backs? Just keep Reguilon. If Jose has Spurs doing that away to Chelsea he has them running good.

I do. I lean to the left on several issues, not just fantasy football. I was going to get rid of Reg this week, but decided to sell Lamptey instead and use Reg as cover in case Cancelo didn’t play. I guess that’s one thing I did get right.

But I’m definitely selling Regulión, he’s the makeweight for the KDB transfer.

    3. Plant Based FPLer

And that bench is super, super light with Brewster, Nkounkou and Mitchell. Not even one guaranteed 90 minute player. 2 is optimal.

I would rather you downgrade Cancelo than Reguilon, though I may be misunderstanding the question. Spurs defense has greatly improved and surely further CS - and attacking returns - are coming. Fixtures look good defensively.

Thanks Flair. Keeping Reg and selling Cancelo is also an option, sure; I’m still left with a very weak bench, but at least Reg seems pretty nailed on.

    Rank the Sub 7M forwards?

    a. Adams (hard to know when to play him)
    b. Bamford (if only the post counted for points)
    c. Watkins (too much villa for Grealish owners)
    d. Wilson (love the hustle, plays 90 minutes, but also plays for NCU)

Like all of them because they don't have Europa, UCL or England commitments. Just live for EPL.

    I am thinking D, B, A, and C

110% bringing in KDB this week and captaining him.. just not sure which is the best way to fund it.

    0.5itb, 1FT, pick one:

    1) Kane + Grealish (or Ziyech) —> Bamford + KDB
    2) Fernandes + Ziyech —> Jota + KDB
    3) Fernandes + Grealish —> Jota + KDB
    4) Kane + Wilson + Stephen’s —> Bamford + Davis + KDB (will switch to 3-5-2 and bench Davis)

    Rest of team:
    Martinez
    Chillwell / KWP / Dias
    Salah / Fernandes* / Ziyech* / Grealish*
    Kane* / DCL / Wilson

    Button, Kilman, Michell, Stephens*.

Is this plan to get KDB and Salah in, and move Sterling out ok?

GW 12: Sterling to Salah (Sterling has an extremely poor record against United, Salah plays FUL)

GW 13: Ziyech to KDB and Vardy to a sub 8.0 FWD (most probably Wilson/ Tammy)

Even if he returns, he needs to be micromanaged and Pep has talked about him earning a new contract - showing there is slight concern there. The injury and fitness issues have piled up this season. Most importantly, the upside is very high with Gabriel Jesus.

Yeah if I get Jesus. He wears the armband too. Knee problem for Kun. I hope he plays midweek & not good but I kinda hope he gets injured 😆

I wouldn't personally, if he blanks this week your going to be stuck with him. do you have your wc?

that makes it different because you could bring him in then wc him out after West Brom

        defence for next week is

        Lamptey (SOU)
        Konsa (NEW)
        Cresswell (MUN)

Semado and Mitchell on the bench

is anything worth a free transfer here? I could easily do Semado to James but kind of happy with the starting 3 and be good to have 2FT in GW 12

Depends on how you cover captaincy with KDB the standout option against Fulham this week and Salah the standout option against Fulham next week.

            Son + Vardy/Dcl > Salah (c) + Jesus/Wilson(-4) next week

Sterling to KDB is pretty sideways. Sterling to Salah doesn't seem like a great move before MCI-FUL / LIV-WOL.
Can you do Son to KDB?

Not sure Sterling to KDB is sideways anymore with Sterling being rotated by Pep and not sure of a start.
0.1 short of Son > KDB

You might be right but I look at the Burnley game as Sterling getting some much needed rest and so now I'd want to have him going forward if I could,
Of course I could be wrong but who knows with Pep. Good luck.

Should i get Mahrez for FUL?

Currently have KdB, Bruno, Jota, Grealish, Bowen, DCL, Bamford, Vardy in attack. Only 1.6 ITB and 1FT, so can't straight swap Mahrez for Bowen, only for a hit.

Dallas underlying attacking stats much better, but Coufal getting better FPL points results ATM as perhaps WHU is a better defense.
If you're an underlying stats guy, go with Dallas. If not, I suppose go with Coufal at home against an arguably lesser offense (although home pitch advantage not even close to what it normally is in non-Covid times). Good luck.
