Fernandes climbs above Salah in FPL points table as Cavani edges closer to start

Southampton 2-3 Manchester United

  • Goals: Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) | Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m), Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) x2
  • Assists: Ward-Prowse, Moussa Djenepo (£5.4m) | Cavani, Fernandes, Marcus Rashford (£9.5m)
  • Bonus: Cavani x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Bednarek x1

A stunning second-half comeback won Manchester United the points at Southampton as Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) announced himself as a Fantasy prospect in spectacular style.

The Uruguayan veteran scored two goals and set up another after replacing the ineffectual Mason Greenwood (£7.1m) at half-time.

Other than that, it was Fantasy Premier League (FPL) business as usual at St Mary’s, with more set-piece joy for Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) and yet another away day haul from Bruno Fernandes (£10.8m).

Saints Alive – For Half A Game

Southampton led 2-0 at the interval as Ward-Prowse continued his blistering recent form with a fourth goal and second assist since Gameweek 6.

Two bonus points meant it was also a third double-digit score in those five starts and the England international is currently in the top ten FPL midfielders – and the cheapest to make that list.

His goal against United, from a free-kick, shortened David de Gea‘s (£5.4m) involvement in the match as the keeper collided with the post in trying to keep out Ward-Prowse’s pin-point effort.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t overly concerned about the Spaniard post-match, probably helped by the fact that Dean Henderson (£5.3m) is an excellent understudy:

A knock just above the knee, so hopefully he’ll be okay for Wednesday, but we don’t know. Let’s have a little scan or check tomorrow, but Dean came on and looked very assured.

The other keeper in action at St Mary’s, Alex McCarthy (£4.6m), was even more assured, producing fine saves to deny Greenwood, Fernandes and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m).

His 20.5% ownership did not enjoy a fourth straight home clean sheet, however, as United turned things round after the break.

Change Is Good

Solskjaer often gives the impression that he’s a conservative manager, but he made some big calls both before and during Sunday’s game.

He handed starts to Greenwood and Donny van de Beek (£6.7m) and the latter again impressed in the balanced role that caught the eye in the Champions League last week.

That role – a mix of defensive shield and midfield conduit – allows Fernandes further attacking freedom, which does dampen the Dutchman’s Fantasy appeal.

The same cannot be said of Cavani.

Two goals and an assist from 45 stellar minutes positively oozes FPL potential as Solskjaer’s decision to bring the striker on at half-time changed the game.

Small surprise, then, that the United manager was glowing in his praise for the striker:

On the training pitch, in the dressing room and during meal times, how meticulous he is. He is one of the best because of his experience and qualities, that movement. He is one of the best movers you can see. He can peel off the shoulder, he can get in front of you, he can pin you. He wants to be in between the two posts, which I love.

A Foil For Fernandes?

Despite all that love, Solskjaer preferred to start Greenwood ahead of Cavani because the youngster ‘needed the minutes’. And there is also the matter of Anthony Martial (£8.7m), who missed the match through illness.

But United’s almost unhealthy reliance on Fernandes – he’s been involved in 11 of the team’s 16 league goals this season – underlines just how important Cavani could become.

In just 127 minutes of action, he now has more goals (three) than Rashford (two) and Martial (zero) have managed from 1,175 minutes of collective toil up front.

This season’s crazy schedule will demand rotation – particularly around Christmas – but Cavani is beginning to look like a starter, not an impact sub.

If he can take some of the strain off Fernandes, who made it three straight double-digit returns and a fourth consecutive haul on the road, both could flourish.

Whether the pair can combine so well at Old Trafford against far deeper-lying teams than Southampton will be the key, however.

Fixtures Over Form

One thing in the pair’s favour could be United’s short-term schedule.

They’re back on their beloved road, at West Ham, in Gameweek 11 and will also travel to Sheffield United before Christmas.

And their wretched home form – just one win from five attempts – might actually be helped by the arrival of Manchester City and Leeds over the next four Gameweeks as neither side is likely to sit back and frustrate Solskjaer’s side.

Ings Can Maybe Get Better

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl spoke ahead of Gameweek 10 about Danny Ings (£8.3m) maybe being available for the Brighton trip and that could prove to be a nice tonic for his troops:

We had gone seven games unbeaten before now, it’s a good run. And now we’ll need to start another run.

Southampton’s schedule offers little prospect of that, with decent fixtures – Brighton and Sheffield United next and a trip to Fulham – offset by tough home matches with Man City and Liverpool.

Ings would certainly boost the side’s attacking threat, while their defenders are relatively cheap and two, Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.6m and 12.1%) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m and 10.1%), are well-owned.

But their backline is a curious beast this season.

The four clean sheets they’ve kept the second-best record in the league and yet they’ve conceded at least three goals in four separate matches.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Walker-Peters (N’Lundulu 90+4), Vestergaard, Bednarek, Bertrand; Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong (Diallo 90), Djenepo (Long 72); Walcott, Adams.

Manchester United XI (4-3-1-2): De Gea (Henderson 45); Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles (Williams 84); Fred, McTominay, van de Beek; Fernandes; Rashford, Greenwood (Cavani 45).

After the next gameweek I will be moving for 'The Power 3™' in midfield - Salah, KDB & Bruno.

It will mean losing Kane - but with his fixtures and the fact I'll be getting Salah for captain v's Fulham means I'm not overly worried.

Anyone else heading towards this? I can't see a week where I won't have one of those as my captain and they are all looking in really good form at the moment

I'm weighing up going without Salah.

There are a lot of options at the moment and Jota is looking like a captaincy candidate on form.

        Same, I’m thinking something like:

        Martinez
        Robbo | James | Lamptey | Dallas
        KdB | Bruno | Son | Grealish
        Kane | DCL

        Steer | Soucek | Kilman | Brewster

Yes, looks good, imagine choosing when to play Soucek is a bit of a nightmare!

I'm probably rolling my FT and then in GW12 moving to the below. Vardy will become Kane again by GW16

          Martinez
          Robbo / James / Cancelo
          KDB / Bruno / Grealish / Jota
          DCL / Vardy / Wilson

          Steer / Lamptey / Coufal / Burke

Yes - I am thinking about losing Son for Salah in GW12 which would give me a midfield four of Salah KDB Bruno Jota.

The issue I suspect I am going to have is that I'll be selling Son the week after he goes through a pathetic looking Arsenal side like a knife through butter. José will be smelling blood, I can see it being a 3-0 with Son heavily involved.

If ever there has been a time to ignore fixtures, it is now. Sure, the Kane blank vs Chelsea would lead you to this notion but beating Citeh? Salah Bruno KDB and Kane could all be considered similar and their values are within 1.6 mil of each other. I would contemplate keeping Kane as he is the only forward and will keep your squad balance. Choices for forwards are limited and value seem in the 6 to 6.5 range. Have a real good think about it.

    Robbo, Chillwell, Coufal (Lamptey, Mitchell)
    KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Zaha (Bissouma)

Can I save a transfer this week and:
    GW12: Zaha >>> Salah captain

I would say he would be if he wasn't on pens. But with the pens and if he sustains his usual 20 assists a season with 8-9 goals from open play too then he'll be up there with more than 250 points again

Which were spread through the team, with just over a 50% conversion rate. Is it 1 pen won in 9 games this year? And missed by KdB who prior to 19/20 was never much cop in front of goals. Wouldn't be confident they will win any more than 7 or 8 this year, or that KdB will even keep those duties

            1. Zimo
              • 5 Years

2 won. Kdb missed 1. I don't understand why the spread among the players thing means anything when my argument is if kdb keeps them he'll do well. And i don't think they'll be spread because i personally believe he's their first choice taker now.

              • 5 Years
              3 years, 3 months ago

They missed because they weren't very good at penalties. That's why i think kdb keeps them. City need a designated taker because aguero is injured all the time.

      2. Pacer.
        • 9 Years

And both Kane and Bruno are very much more on course for a 250 than KdB is, both coming in 1m cheaper base price

I dunno. His recent output has dropped considerably. He might get around 220-230. His highest score has been 224 to date in a season where he scored 29 goals. Its just the fwd bias in fpl.

          1. Pacer.
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 3 months ago

It's nothing to do with bias. The one and only reason he's not regularly posted 250-300 scores is that he misses 10-20 games every single season with an injury. Extrapolate his average ppg to the number of games KdB and Salah played when hitting 250s and you see him up near 300s. That's not bias.

He's a million less than KdB

Yes i understand. Kane could be better value being a million cheaper for people who had him from the start but considering prices right now and starting from this point i believe getting KDB is better value than Kane.

It's not the one and only reason but sure in the one season in 2016/17 he could have gotten a lot more if he wasn't injured. He's not playing as the typical goalscorer though anymore. He's the creator now. So i don't expect him to get those numbers again in fpl terms. Son would outscore him if he did

You're probably closer being right than me on closer examination of the stats

Nonetheless. As he's having a better season it's realistic to expect 230 ish.

Is it really realistic to expect that of KdB?

I do not know. But previous weeks are over. So those don't matter. What matters is who'll outscore the other from now on and i think that's KDB.

KDB got 251pts from 2790 mins.
Salah in second got 233pts from 2879 mins (a full game more)

City weren't great last season, finishing way behind Liverpool. And KDB didn't get the benefit of any penalties until after lockdown.

He's also playing further forward this season as a no10 with Gundogan and Rodri behind him.

There's a lot of evidence to suggest KDB will better his 251pt haul, let alone realistic that he gets 230ish

The line of defense holds for both though.
The term many deem as offensive, is not considered as such in South America, especially in Uruguay where both Suarez and Cavani are from.

So it is more cultural insensitivity than racism.

Technically, one could even argue that UK being insensitive towards Uruguayans - though obviously it is true that they have to adhere to the rules here while they play here.

Can't ignore Fernandes any longer but City's fixtures also looks too good to miss out on, so:

    Kane, J.Rod, Ziyech / Grealish

    to

Brewster, Bruno, KBD (-4pts) - I'd be benching Brewster each week.

    Is it worth it?

Depends on who you're benching him for. The issue with these sort of questions is you're offering up 3 starters vs 2 starters and 1 non-starter w/o a replacement. How do you expect to receive decent advice?

I don't think anybody can answer this question.

All of those players are capable of scoring points. Except Brewster.

        Front 8 would become:

        Grealish, Bruno, KDB, Salah, Jota
        DCL, Bamford, Brewster.

Brewster being a non-starter is fine.

I'm not normally a fan of hokey-cokeying players for one gameweek but is it worth making an exception to do Salah to KDB, then back again? Salah plays Wolves this week who rarely get hammered, I'd still have Jota, and it would give me a captain playing against Fulham two weeks in a row which looks too good to turn down.

You don’t have many other issues so it might work for you, but Fulham don’t lose every game 10 nil so don’t be surprised if Salah’s score is equal or close to KDB this week, and KDB is equal or close to Salah’s next week.

There's a chance it won't pay off but City's fixture is so good this week that I'd prefer a bit of skin in both games rather than 2x Pool in a trickier game vs Wolves.

I think that is the play...with the fixtures alternating like they are. As long as you don't have injuries or COVID fires to put out, the hokey cokey in midfield will be popular.

Do you think Mahrez over KDB will work out? Mahrez gets mins most games tbh. Considering peps comments on scoring etc, you’d expect Mahrez keeps starting based on last game.
He could be great or a big fail, if he doesn’t start mid week, go for him?

    1. Hulk Smash
      • 8 Years

Mahrez can be a great pick if the circumstances align to make it almost certain he starts (i.e. last performance plus a rest in midweek). I got him for GW30+ last season and he got me 21 points. The only thing is you have to be ready to sell him quickly even after he's hauled for you as he's not a long term keep.
