The Ziyech injury latest and Mount’s joy from set plays: FPL notes on Chelsea v Leeds

Chelsea 3-1 Leeds United

  • Goals: Olivier Giroud (£6.7m), Kurt Zouma (£5.6m), Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) | Patrick Bamford (£6.1m)
  • Assists: Reece James (£5.2m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Timo Werner (£9.5m) | Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: Mount x3, Bamford, Phillips x2

Chelsea came from behind to see off Leeds with a performance of pace and verve played out in front of 2,000 loud and happy fans.

Patrick Bamford‘s (£6.1m) eighth goal of the season, seven of which have come on the road, gave the visitors an early lead.

But once Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) had equalised, the hosts took control, dominated the second half and ended up out-shooting their opponents 23 to eight.

BLOOMER ZOUMA

The Bamford goal, from an exquisite Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) through-ball, scuppered Chelsea’s chances of a third straight clean sheet.

It also meant a mixed night for those with a Blues defender in their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-up.

Top of that particular shop is Ben Chilwell (£6.2m and 36%), who treated all those owners to a first blank since Gameweek 5 and only his second in eight games as a Chelsea player.

Leeds’ wingers, and in particular the industrious Raphinha (£5.4m), kept both Chelsea full-backs relatively quiet on the night, although Reece James (£5.2m) did provide the cross for Giroud’s leveller – one of two big chances he created.

Stopping the aerial threat of Kurt Zouma (£5.6m) is not so easy, however, and he powered home a header, from a Mason Mount (£6.8m) corner, to put the home side in the lead after the break.

It was the centre-half’s fourth goal of the season – double the total of any other defender – and confirmed once again the Blues’ prowess from dead ball situations.

Frank Lampard’s side has now scored seven goals from corners this campaign, which is four more than any other team.

MIDFIELD RICHES

That set-piece threat should increase the Fantasy allure of Mount, who took eight corners against Leeds, six of which were successful.

The England international has actually delivered more corners than any other Premier League player over the last six Gameweeks.

But his 4.6% ownership figure means managers are clearly not buying him into thus far, even though a goal and four assists this season have helped him to more points (43) than anyone else in Chelsea’s vaunted midfield.

Maybe familiarity has bred contempt, but the fact that the 16.5%-owned Hakim Ziyech (£8.3m) lasted just 29 minutes on Saturday might boost Mount’s popularity should Fantasy bosses want a straight swap.

Lampard gave an immediate verdict on Ziyech’s injury post-match:

It is a hamstring injury which we will find out the severity of in the next couple of days. It is obviously a disappointment going into this busy period.

Regardless of the upcoming Christmas madness, rushing anyone back from a hamstring problem is decidedly ill-advised.

Not that Lampard is lacking options in midfield anyway.

Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) came off the bench for his first extended run-out in the league since Gameweek 6 and he was his usual fast, direct and threatening self, which bodes well for his 1.8% ownership.

Lampard was certainly happy with his sub’s impact:

I was really pleased for Christian today because it has been a difficult period with the injury for him. For him to play the period of the game he played with the intensity of the game, and to get his goal, because he has the incredible gift of arriving in the box centrally as a wide man, I was delighted and he is only going to get stronger.

TIMO TIME OR WERNER WORRIES

The American’s introduction had an impact on Timo Werner (£9.5m) – and not all of it positive.

The striker, who had been interchanging with Giroud in a central role, was shunted out to the right flank by Pulisic’s introduction, although it didn’t stop him from having a busy night.

He set up the substitute’s late clincher and worked the excellent Leeds keeper Illan Meslier (£4.6m) on a number of occasions, most notably when contriving to fluff a chance from a yard out following a Giroud header.

On another day, Werner could have brought in a huge haul for his 23.4% ownership, which is a familiar refrain so far this season.

He’s produced just one double-digit performance so far (a 16-pointer in Gameweek 5) and that has tried the patience of many managers.

But only five forwards have more than his 55 points in FPL and he leads the way among strikers for penalty area touches (62).

Chelsea’s schedule is not the easiest – they’ll travel to Everton and Wolves next and will face Arsenal and Manchester City before the FA Cup third round.

That might not encourage much new investment in their key assets, although selling on the likes of Werner looks risky.

LIMP LEEDS

Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa was blunt about his team’s loss:

The result was fair and the difference was fair. Although we didn’t create many chances, the difficulty in the game was not neutralising them when they were playing out from the back.

Chelsea must take much of the credit for keeping the visitors quiet – Leeds averaged 15 attempts a match prior to Saturday, but were kept to just over half of that total at Stamford Bridge.

That didn’t stop Bamford scoring yet again, and he remains the team’s most popular FPL asset, at 35.2%, by a huge margin.

Leeds came into the game looking for a third straight clean sheet, but an early knee injury to Robin Koch (£4.5m) proved disruptive.

However, Bielsa’s decision to play full-back Stuart Dallas (£4.6m) in midfield could tempt investment ahead of a generally good set of fixtures. If the coach continues to use him in that role, that is.

West Ham and Newcastle at home are next for Leeds, while their two toughest games before the FA Cup – Manchester United and Spurs – will both be away, which should keep Bamford owners happy for now.

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Mount, Kanté, Havertz (Kovacic 67); Werner, Giroud (Abraham 79), Ziyech (Pulisic 30).

Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Alioski (Rodrigo 69), Cooper, Koch (Llorente 9), Ayling; Phillips; Harrison (Poveda 57), Dallas, Klich, Raphinha; Bamford.

Well done on a good score this week joe! Thoughts on doing Hokey Cokey on the big hitters? Most interning season in a few years as so many big hitters firing and can’t have them all so is switching between them depending on fixtures a viable option

cheers. Good question. Hokey Cokey or set and forget is probably the key debate of this campaign and in particular this period in the fixtures.

Agree. Otherwise we're going to spend every GW taking hits to try and squeeze in Bruno, KDB and Salah. Has to be two of the three (or super cheap frontline).

As an example is have grealish son kdb Bruno DCL and Kane and I want to keep them all. I can do kdb salah Hokey Cokey or something like Kane Bowen and Chilwell to Bamford salah and Dallas for -4. The hit feels wrong tho with losing Kane and Chilwell so leaning on kdb to salah this week and reversing next week!

Crazy season I scored 34 (-12) last week followed by 104 (-4) when can this season settle down?? 1.3 to 400k Hokey Cokey..

Looking to set and forget Bruno/Salah/De Bruyne but possible Hokey Cokey between son and Bruno 16-18.. Problem is you can’t have them all...

Is it time to jump back on Trent Alexander-Arnold train, I certainly am..

Considering the chances of rotation which will be greater than previous seasons, would it be wise to hold an additional substitute that can score prolifically on the bench? Bad luck could create black holes all over team selection and it concerns me.

      Slightly off-topic but...

If you were given the choice, which Christmas gift would you chose?

      - Becoming FFS Hall of Fame No. 1 (and the longevity of success that would have had to preceed that)

      or...

      - Winning FPL once - but having a mediocre HoF ranking

      I'm torn - advice appreciated!

With all the pain of trying to accommodate all the big hitters in midfield, which budget / mid priced defensive options options should we be looking at to balance this out?

For example, I have Bruno Salah KDB Grealish Kane with DCL & Bamford with a budget of 25.4 to spend on defence?

Forward planning for this busy period. Which talisman should we get in our teams to negate (to as much of an extent as possible) the need to have a three man playing bench.

Q: To be able to afford three (or even four) 'big-hitters' who are the best enablers £7m or below who are providing value with points for a low price? (i.e. Bamford, Wilson, Watkins up top and Jota, Bowen, JWP in midfield)

Q: Transfers are precious, so which bracket of players should be prioritsed when targeting fixtures? A) rotating heavy hitters or B) rotating value mid/forward enablers, C) rotating defenders?

Do you still consider Salah, KDB and Bruno to be the Holy Trinity?
My own current trinity of Salah, Kane and Son outscored yours by five points this week, and Kane (40) and Son (39) both have far more top 50 owners than Bruno (31) and KDB (17).
This may of course change, but I don't think that your three stand head and shoulders above the rest like Christiano Ronaldo, Lampard and Gerrard once did.
As Josserz points out in his hot topic, all five are excellent choices, and we can probably only afford to own three or four of them at a time without impoverishing the rest of our squads, so we have some interesting decisions to make about which of them to own and when, and whether to stick with the ones we have or play the hokey-cokey with them.
I don't think it's as simple as just getting your Holy Trinity as a set and forget trio.

I don't think anyone has been claiming that they stand head and shoulders above others.

I think you were very lucky with the Spurs boys, though. Son in particular has fewer xGI over the last 6 gameweeks than the likes of Cavaleiro and Dendoncker.

If a set of three players don't stand head and shoulders above the rest then they don't deserve to be called the Holy Trinity, as Joe called them last week.

In the last six Gameweeks, Son has scored 42 points (three double-digit hauls and three blanks), Cavaleiro 14 (10 of them in GW10, his only attacking return this season) and Dendoncker 15 (his assist in GW10 was his first attacking return since GW4.

Son's three blanks were disappointing, but Cavaleiro and Dendoncker don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath. xGI on its own can be very misleading.

They're three players you can set and forget for the foreseeable future and cover the captaincy so that no other options are needed.

They enable a strategy of not needing to rotate heavy hitters, which saves transfers and that's valuable. Other combinations probably do as well.

Son is not lucky, he is clinical. He has always outperformed his xGI. He's probably the best finisher in the league right now.

Yes, that's certainly a very strong quartet of big hitters.

I'm not sure that any of them are essential, but it would perhaps be unwise to own less than six of Son, Fernandes, Salah, KDB, Kane, Grealish, Calvert-Lewin and Chilwell (or another Chelsea defender).
We both currently own six of these, but not quite the same six).

Perhaps it would be more accurate just to say that it might be dangerous to own less than three of the five big hitters.
I think I would prefer just to call them the elite five.

There are alternatives to the other players mentioned too - eg Jota, Zaha, Vardy, Wilson, Bamford, Watkins and Ings, so we can't really talk about a holy octet either.

For me the burning question is not one of the many big hitters but rather what do do (if anything) with Calvert-Lewin.

There is no doubt he is a much improved player and most importantly he is scoring goals.

But, with the main creative force in the team, James Rodriguez, looking increasingly disinterested and the Everton fixtures about to take a pretty nasty turn, do you see value on hopping off him early?

Why not play the Free Hit this gw if you own KDB, Bruno & Vardy, but not Kane, Son & Salah?

In GW 12, KDB & Bruno play each other, Vardy & LEI aren't inspiring (especially at home), while Kane & Son play away v CRY & Salah plays away v FUL. Both of CRY & FUL tend to do worse at home.
Then, in GW 13, the Free-Hit LIV & TOT players disappear while facing each other, as the non-free-hit KDB & Bruno come back in to play WBA & SHU respectively.
Sure, Free Hit can be very useful later in the season but missing Salah, Kane & Son in gw12 while not wanting them in gw13 makes this opportunity very tempting.
Triple ups with Salah, Jota & Robbo, Kane, Son & Reguilon, McCarthy, JWP & Adams (SOU welcome SHU who are at their worst in away games), James & Werner (or a CHE mid) (CHE visit EVE who tend to defend even worse at home), all can give a strong boost.
I also expect LEE & WHU, WOL & AVL, to cancel each other out, not providing any hauls for their usual suspects.

A solid 90 pts this week taking me inside the top 100k. I have four big hitters.

      KDB
      Bruno
      Son
      Vardy

Need to bring Salah in for Fulham. Thinking of going Bruno to Salah and Vardy to Ings.

Could sell Son instead of Bruno, but Spurs have a better fixture this week.

Grealish -> Bruno for (-4) would be a terrible move this week

Cool, will wait until next week..

I'm fed up of Werner, always seems to just be one of those players that 'could' haul at any point, but seems to just miss absolute sitters, should have scored at least 4 times in his last 2 games. I'd rather have Bruno over Grealish in the long run but only way for me to get Bruno is to remove both Werner & Grealish.

I'll wait another week and do the moves for free.

Which of these teams do you guys prefer on a wildcard:
    A)
    McCarthy
    TAA, Zouma, Auerier, (Webster)
    Salah, Jota, KDB, Grealish (Aranguisa)
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

    B)
    McCarthy
    Zouma, Aurier, Balbuena, (Webster)
    Salah, Bruno, KDB, Son, Grealish
    DCL, Bamford, (Brewster)

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Mhm i suppose it could backfire, but livepool are playing so much better than United. Bruno at home facing City vs Salah away game vs Ful, so tempting, but would loose some value aswell on bruno and i know i would want him back later.

I wish we had gotten Haaland. All he wanted was a buyout clause. Could have set it high and turned in a profit but noooo Manchester United can't have a player with a buyout clause. They're too proud for that. Idiots. And now we're monitoring a RB. Just great.

Nice! The bench could hurt you over xmas but that starting line up is full of points. I have Salah, KDB, Son and I'm currently trying to decide between a straight swap of Ziyech to Grealish, or downgrade Robertson and get Bruno for Ziyech instead. So I'd have 4 of your midfield either way but no chance of getting all 5!

                  3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah hopefully doesn't hurt too bad. Personally think with most of the players being talismans of their teams that even if they're rested they would come on as a sub. So wouldn't get bench points anyways. So I'm risking it all! Good luck to you my friend! Bruno and Grealish both lovely picks. Can't go wrong with either of them whichever u choose.

73 pts so far with Ryan and Lamptey to play.
Did Son to Mahrez this week and extremely gutted with that. Mahrez returned 4, Son returned 14.

I have lost .2m value tied to Son. I really don't know whether to buy back Son or see and keep Mahrez for two weeks. Would really appreciate some thought here

    Ryan, (4m)
    Lamptey, Chilwell, Justin, (Mitchel, Dunne)
Salah (c), Jota, KDB, Mahrez (Podence)
    Vardy, Bamford, DCL.

RP from last page (cheers @Pat Bonner)

    Morning all
Made uncharacteristically early moves last night before first lot of price changes. Here is how I'm set for GW12 as it stands:

    0FT 0.1itb
    Martinez
    Robbo, Chilwell, KWP
    Salah (C), KDB, Bruno, Grealish
    DCL, Bamford, Wilson
    (Forster) (Cresswell, Stephens, Branthwaite)

Obvious missing piece is Spurs attack but, without ripping the whole thing up (i.e. DCL/ Robbo out) or doing a hokey cokey with KDB or Bruno, I don't see how to get them in. I still don't think they will go crazy every match so I have to just make do without!

Wilson is a risk and if there is news of the game being off, I would consider this move to massively strengthen my bench ahead of the Xmas period - but would prefer not to have to do it this week as would be for hits!:

    Cresswell, Stephens > Dallas, Soucek

What do you think re. team and the bench strengthening plan?

    Cheers

Spurs are not getting many chances but they are clinical. I think 2 out of 3 playing bench players is enough to cover COVID and Christmas period

        Leaning towards A or C

        B. Grealish and Vardy to Salah and Brewster (442)

I want Salah from GW12 onwards.

My options to getting Salah back:

    A) Son & Vardy to Salah & Wilson (Watkins or Adams)
    B) Grealish & Vardy to Salah & Watkins (or Adams)

Son and Grealish are both hard to drop. Thoughts?

    1. Piksau
      • 9 Years

Vardy is the main attacking threat of Leicester, i wouldnt let go of him if i were you.
Similar with Son, its him and Kane who rack up most of the attacking returns. Plus, Son gets more points for goals and clean sheet potential so he is a very essential player, in my opinion.
Grealish is a player i would keep also as again, he is essential to Villas attacking threat.

In contrast, Pool have many attacking options and Mane is a spoiler for Salah. I dont see their output of goals at the same level as last year so while Salah is a good player, he is not worth removing the players you have currently.

At the end of the day you can't have them all can you.

I have sold Son & Kane in recent weeks knowing that they will continue scoring goals.

But, the players I have brought in are doing well too and I think with A) you should score more points and give yourself the best captain option going into next week

How would you get Salah in this squad for captaincy next week?

    A) Kane & Rodriguez to Adams & Salah (-4)
    B) KDB & Rodriguez to Salah & KWP (-4)
    C) Save FT, don't get Salah and hide behind the sofa when Salah plays

    The current squad is:
    McCarthy - Forster
    Robertson - Konsa - Zouma - Dallas - Mitchell
    Fernandes - Zaha - KDB - Jota - Rodriguez
    Kane - DCL - Brewster

KDB because he's the best C in GW13 and you wouldn't C Kane until GW16

My team is constantly under performing and i am in need of some big changes been looking at taking a double hit and going with these changes:

    Leno Martin
    Konsa Zouma Justin Coady Rodon
    Graelish Riedewald Son Foden Rodriguez
    Werner Kane DCL

take a minus 8 and go...

    Leno Martin
    Konsa Zouma Justin Coady Rodon
    Salah Riedewald Son Foden KDB
    DCL Bamford Wilson

(sub Kane, Werner, Rodriguez, Graelish for Salah, KDB, Wilson, Bamford)

    2FTs, 2.1 ITB
Free hit available but no wild card

I would still need to get rid of Foden if he continues not to play alot of minutes which looks likely and Rodon (probably for Mount & Dallas if he continues to play midfield)...

Anyone have any thoughts on if this is a good plan or ideas to help sort my team? Dont want to miss out on the good KDB & Salah fixtures upcoming

      Whoa... That team needs work.

Focus on fixing core issues and getting captaincy options. Foden and Rodriguez need to go first. You need to get Salah in.

I'd do like Werner, Rodriguez, Foden > Salah, Jota, Bamford and then go from there.

    hi guys,

which two of these four would you guys suggest?

    Watkins, Adams, Bamford, Wilson.

Stat wise points to Bamford and Watkins.
You'll have to wait on more news for Wilson, as his next three fixtures are excellent put feels a short term pick imo

maybe Wilson for Watkins if they are cleared to play

Bamford and Wilson. They will the focal point of most attacking returns of their teams.
Ings reportedly in contention for this GW, with him there Adams' potential output dimishes.

Sterling to Bruno worth a -4, or just wait and do it for free?

Issue if i wait is that City are home vs WBA so i guess there is an argument to wait 2 weeks

Could wait as City are next for Utd, at home, which has been a bad hunting ground for United this season.
