Liverpool 4-0 Wolves

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.3m), Joel Matip (£5.4m)
  • Own goals: Nelson Semedo (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Jordan Henderson x2 (£5.4m), Salah, Sadio Mané (£12.0m)
  • Bonus points: Salah x3, J Henderson x2, Matip x2

RETURN OF THE KING

A kind run of fixtures and a first double-digit haul since returning from self-isolation has made Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) the hot topic of a Gameweek 12 trip to Fulham.

The Egyptian registered a goal and an assist as Liverpool ran out comfortable winners over Wolves on Sunday, becoming only the second team to put four goals past Nuno Espirito Santo’s men since their return to the Premier League in August 2018.

His 14-point haul was made all the more ominous for Fantasy Premier League managers as Diogo Jota (£7.0m), a recent emerging alternative option, watched from the bench for 73 minutes before registering a one-point cameo.

Unsurprisingly, Salah is now the second-most signed player for Gameweek 12 when Liverpool travel to Fulham.

More importantly, Salah’s long-term appeal stretches beyond Sunday’s trip to Craven Cottage as the Reds face Crystal Palace (away), West Bromwich Albion (home) and Newcastle (away) between then and Gameweek 16.

At the time of writing, the Egyptian is owned by 32% of Fantasy managers; relatively low by his historic standards.

Meanwhile, more managers inside the top 10k own Jota than Salah. Therefore, the differential potential is still there for him, although it is unlikely to last too long considering the volume of new backers he is picking up for Gameweek 12.

REINFORCEMENTS

A clean sheet against Wolves is certainly something to be encouraged by for owners of Liverpool defensive assets

Since the first match after Virgil van Dijk‘s (£6.3m) injury at Everton (against Ajax in October), the Reds have conceded six goals in 11 games in all competitions, keeping six clean sheets in the process.

However, there are several mitigating factors to consider for future investment.

Firstly, it must be said that Liverpool were helped in their latest shut-out by Wolves’ own problems.

This was their first match without Raúl Jiménez (£8.3m) who suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal.

Rather than replace the Mexican with Fabio Silva (£5.2m) in a straight swap, Nuno selected Daniel Podence (£5.4m) to lead the line with Pedro Neto (£5.6m) and Adama Traoré (£6.2m) providing the width.

Without Jiménez’s ability to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, Wolves lacked penetration and even when Traoré did manage to break free from Liverpool’s doubled-up marking, there was very little for the winger to aim at. As an aside, such a dynamic could bode well for Aston Villa’s defensive credentials in Gameweek 12, especially as they’ve conceded just two goals in four away matches this season.

It also, of course, also worth pointing out that Wolves generally struggle against Jurgen Klopp’s men. This was their eighth consecutive defeat to Liverpool, a run which has seen them concede 19 times and score just twice.

Meanwhile, the best way to invest in Liverpool’s defence is in flux once again. Budget options Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m) and Neco Williams (£3.9m) both benefitted from the clean sheet in goal and at right-back respectively.

However, Alisson (£5.9m) could be back from his hamstring injury in time for the Fulham game while Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) returned to action against Wolves, replacing Williams in the 68th minute.

FAB FOUR VS FLAT FOUR

Wolves have now used a four-man defence for three Premier League matches in a row, suggesting that Nuno intends to shift to a 4-3-3 formation longer term.

His team have been synonymous with a back-three and wing-backs since their return to the Premier League but those days could be over now.

Nuno first used this new system in the 1-1 draw against Southampton largely because of Conor Coady (£5.0m) and Romain Saïss (£5.1m) both missing out.

The fact that the back-four persists despite those two returning to the fold suggests it could be here to stay, bad news for Max Kilman (£4.3m) who has been omitted from the starting XI over the last two, unable to displace either one of Coady or Willy Boly (£5.5m) at centre-back.

That said, the results of this switch have not been too promising. Against Liverpool, Coady was more error-prone than usual, his poor chested control gifting Salah his early goal – only his third error leading to a goal in 87 Premier League matches.

Between Gameweeks 1 and 8, Wolves kept clean sheets in 50% of their matches and gave up 1.1 goals per game. Since moving to a back-four, they are yet to shut an opposing team out and have conceded two goals per game. It is early days, of course, but owners of Aston Villa and Chelsea attacking assets, their next two opponents may be buoyed by what they have seen so far.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, N Williams (Alexander-Arnold 68′); C Jones, Wijnaldum, J Henderson (Keïta 81′); Mané, Firmino (Jota 73′), Salah.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (4-3-3): Patrício; Marçal, Coady, Boly, Semedo; Neves (F Silva 62′), Moutinho, Dendoncker; Neto (Vitinha 79′), Podence (Aït-Nouri 71′), Traoré.

Put him in to facilitate Salah, but will likely transfer him and Bruno out next GW unless he scores a hattrick against Sheffield United.

    13.6 left for a keeper 2 defenders
    Players I'm looking at are
    Gk- McCarthy, meslier, Ryan
Def- vestergaard, lamptey, KWP, one of the Leeds defenders (Dallas/Ayling/alioski)

These players are likely to be bought during GW13-15 for the long run

    Thoughts?

    currently feel like
    Ryan/Vestergaard/Alioski is a decent option

This back 4 experiment by Nuno surely has to end. Even the attack hasn't benefitted much from one extra man, especially now without Jimmy

But will Nuno stay stubborn? History says he will. That's good for Villa...

I think Wolves have hit a bit of a wall. I like that they don't sign big names and try to develop their own players into quality performers but they could do with a star signing or two to lift them I think.

If Arteta gets the sack could Nuno resist Arsenal coming calling? Seems like the perfect manager to lift them out of their problems to me.

Is now the time to get TAA? And upgrade Mitchell to give defensive cover?

    Werner & Mitchell -> TAA & Bamford?

    DCL Werner

    Brewster Mitchell Nkounkou

This might be a common problem for all:

A - Plan next 3-4 weeks transfers to get the following midfield - Bruno, Salah, KDB, Grealish, Son
B - settle with four of the five and have a stronger bench.

(Current midfield is Bruno, Salah, KDB, Grealish)

    1. ElChapo

B - gonna be so much rotation over christmas, and that's without any covid related cancellations - i'd try and get a bench where atleast 2/3 are starters.

      1. JONALDINHO
        • 8 Years

For me you only need 1 starter (4.5 defender). Even if a player is benched they’ll likely come on. The chances of two or more of your starters playing 0 minutes is extremely unlikely

        1. ElChapo
          • 6 Years
          5 years, 9 hours ago

considering most benches are made up of (TSB%) a combination of Kilman, Mitchell, Bernardo, davis, Jorginho, Stephens, Dunne & Brewster, i don't really take your point.

Nice team value Ninja. I have similar team but not enough to stretch to have Son without ripping up my defense.

Good advice by all. I reckon having 2 good playing subs is tbe minimum requirement. I can see a few benchings between xmas and new year.

The other way is to downgrade a KDB/Salah to a Mahrez/Jota but not sold on this.

    5. CAREFREEE

I've come to the realisation that it's B.

I've got everyone bar Grealish (Jota) but I've come to terms that my forward two need to be stronger (currently Che Adams).

Will take out Bruno and Adams to someone like Grealish and Wilson I think.

The Bruno choice comes to something 'Let's Talk FPL' mentioned on one of his streams, in that I'd much rather captain KDB or Salah over the next few weeks, rather than Bruno.

Happy to do without Son for now. The dates for Villas DGW will affect my choices on the 4 of the 5 when Villas fixtures swing. If the DGW is early Jan of course I'll keep but if it moves further ahead then he will get replaced by Son. Otherwise someone else needs to get sacrificed and I've no idea who!

Afternoon All. Which option is best? Thanks in advance:

    Current team:

    McCarthy - 4m
    Walker-Peters - Justin - Chilwell - Ayling - Targett
    KDB - Grealish - Fernandes - Son - Bissouma
    DCL - Adams - Kane

    a) Fernandes & DCL > Salah & Bamford
    b) Son & DCL > Salah & Brewster
    c) Bissouma, DCL & Kane > Salah, Bamford & Brewster (no hit as would do transfers over next 2 GWs)

Seems a mad waste but in gw13 I might have to free hit. Won’t have any man u who have Newcastle and no city who have brom.
I will have to cap DCL or Bamford as it stands, if I get my cap wrong and pool and spurs is low scoring I could demolishes that week of city win like 5 nil and everyone has kdb cap :/

I reckon Spurs can't keep up this ridiculous conversion rate surely!

Watching them is so annoying, as they usually start brightly and get their noses in front by a goal or two. And then Mourinho gets them defending deep and not committing many players to counter attack.

I'll be bringing one Spurs player back for GW16, but until then I hope the holy trinity can blow Spurs assets out of the water.

This is true. Son and Kane are almost always involved in Spurs goals. Even with 1 goal permatch Son ends up with double figures.

I’m going with Son as a set and forget. Seems that Jose plays aggressive early on to get the first goal and then sits back in shape. This is why their xg has been so low over the past few weeks. Son in the form of his life and seems to be involved in every goal. Won’t be as explosive as the holy trinity but will consistently deliver pts.

I agree it can be annoying to watch but I disagree they score less when they drop back, seems like most their goals come in counters, Kane very good at holding the ball and waiting for his teammates while Son is quick and finds those holes very well.

They have the joint highest goal different in the league I'd say they're doing fine for scoring.

      4. Klaren
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 hours ago

Maybe, but part of the reason Son and Kane don't get so many chances is because they have a high conversion rate. Because they score early in the game, they prioritize defence even more and don't focus on counterattack. So if their conversion rate drops and they don't score early goals, they are also likely to attempt to attack more.

        Not worth a -4 no.

Basically if you sell him for a hit, the DFer you bring in needs a cleanie minimum for you to break even. Then if Semedo get a cleanie or attacking return then you're screwed.

Not worth it for a DFer IMO.

I usually take all my hits for attacking players and only remove DFers as part of it to make cash if I need it for the attacker

I don’t understand this logic...I’ll probably keep James for 5-6 weeks at least probably a lot more considering I don’t have a wc and lots of other transfers up top to make

So assuming he out scores Semado in that time... which he will comfortably then surely it’s worth it ?

He'll have some other priority next week. Best to take a hit now and get rid of the funk in his team than wait for a time where he has a free transfer

Well whatever... it’s his team at the end of the day.

More chance of that move costing him points than him making points off it.

And he’ll have FT’s each week to make that move in the coming weeks.

Everybody is so impatient in this game I swear!

Why do you think it is necessary to break even on a hit in the same gw

            To flip the question:

Why do you feel the need to take a hit when it's unlikely to pay off that week?

I could understand if James were to somehow get removed from the market next week or something. But he will be there ready to transfer in if you like.

burning transfers looks likely in the near future, theres no point chopping and changing imo. for example in gw13 kdb is a huge bench risk.

Home to wba is midweek between manu and saints so he could be benched or just come off early.

      Salah(C) • KDB • Bruno • Son • Grealish

Very similar to mine so I really like it. We obv could have some bench issues but the big hitters are likely to come on as a sub even when rested.

How am I looking for this week lads? Long term plan is to bring in Son for Jota by downgrading DCL or Chillwell. But that'll take a while.
      0ITB, 0FTs, GTG?

      Martinez
      Zouma Chilwell KWP
      Salah(c) Bruno KDB Grealish Jota
      DCL Bamford
      (Forster/Cresswell/Brewster/Kilman)

I know it's impossible to tell, but could KDB due a rest against WBA? Just realised they play mid week and then Saturday and Southampton is a much tougher game.

Potentially yes he could be benched or come off early. If you don't have him I wouldnt target him to buy for that game just in case.

But in the same way Salah could get a rest v Fulham with spurs a few days later.

60' then subbed off more than not starting and coming in from bench in my opinion.
