Liverpool 4-0 Wolves

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.3m), Joel Matip (£5.4m)
  • Own goals: Nelson Semedo (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Jordan Henderson x2 (£5.4m), Salah, Sadio Mané (£12.0m)
  • Bonus points: Salah x3, J Henderson x2, Matip x2

RETURN OF THE KING

A kind run of fixtures and a first double-digit haul since returning from self-isolation has made Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) the hot topic of a Gameweek 12 trip to Fulham.

The Egyptian registered a goal and an assist as Liverpool ran out comfortable winners over Wolves on Sunday, becoming only the second team to put four goals past Nuno Espirito Santo’s men since their return to the Premier League in August 2018.

His 14-point haul was made all the more ominous for Fantasy Premier League managers as Diogo Jota (£7.0m), a recent emerging alternative option, watched from the bench for 73 minutes before registering a one-point cameo.

Unsurprisingly, Salah is now the second-most signed player for Gameweek 12 when Liverpool travel to Fulham.

More importantly, Salah’s long-term appeal stretches beyond Sunday’s trip to Craven Cottage as the Reds face Crystal Palace (away), West Bromwich Albion (home) and Newcastle (away) between then and Gameweek 16.

At the time of writing, the Egyptian is owned by 32% of Fantasy managers; relatively low by his historic standards.

Meanwhile, more managers inside the top 10k own Jota than Salah. Therefore, the differential potential is still there for him, although it is unlikely to last too long considering the volume of new backers he is picking up for Gameweek 12.

REINFORCEMENTS

A clean sheet against Wolves is certainly something to be encouraged by for owners of Liverpool defensive assets

Since the first match after Virgil van Dijk‘s (£6.3m) injury at Everton (against Ajax in October), the Reds have conceded six goals in 11 games in all competitions, keeping six clean sheets in the process.

However, there are several mitigating factors to consider for future investment.

Firstly, it must be said that Liverpool were helped in their latest shut-out by Wolves’ own problems.

This was their first match without Raúl Jiménez (£8.3m) who suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal.

Rather than replace the Mexican with Fabio Silva (£5.2m) in a straight swap, Nuno selected Daniel Podence (£5.4m) to lead the line with Pedro Neto (£5.6m) and Adama Traoré (£6.2m) providing the width.

Without Jiménez’s ability to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, Wolves lacked penetration and even when Traoré did manage to break free from Liverpool’s doubled-up marking, there was very little for the winger to aim at. As an aside, such a dynamic could bode well for Aston Villa’s defensive credentials in Gameweek 12, especially as they’ve conceded just two goals in four away matches this season.

It also, of course, also worth pointing out that Wolves generally struggle against Jurgen Klopp’s men. This was their eighth consecutive defeat to Liverpool, a run which has seen them concede 19 times and score just twice.

Meanwhile, the best way to invest in Liverpool’s defence is in flux once again. Budget options Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m) and Neco Williams (£3.9m) both benefitted from the clean sheet in goal and at right-back respectively.

However, Alisson (£5.9m) could be back from his hamstring injury in time for the Fulham game while Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) returned to action against Wolves, replacing Williams in the 68th minute.

FAB FOUR VS FLAT FOUR

Wolves have now used a four-man defence for three Premier League matches in a row, suggesting that Nuno intends to shift to a 4-3-3 formation longer term.

His team have been synonymous with a back-three and wing-backs since their return to the Premier League but those days could be over now.

Nuno first used this new system in the 1-1 draw against Southampton largely because of Conor Coady (£5.0m) and Romain Saïss (£5.1m) both missing out.

The fact that the back-four persists despite those two returning to the fold suggests it could be here to stay, bad news for Max Kilman (£4.3m) who has been omitted from the starting XI over the last two, unable to displace either one of Coady or Willy Boly (£5.5m) at centre-back.

That said, the results of this switch have not been too promising. Against Liverpool, Coady was more error-prone than usual, his poor chested control gifting Salah his early goal – only his third error leading to a goal in 87 Premier League matches.

Between Gameweeks 1 and 8, Wolves kept clean sheets in 50% of their matches and gave up 1.1 goals per game. Since moving to a back-four, they are yet to shut an opposing team out and have conceded two goals per game. It is early days, of course, but owners of Aston Villa and Chelsea attacking assets, their next two opponents may be buoyed by what they have seen so far.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Robertson, Fabinho, Matip, N Williams (Alexander-Arnold 68′); C Jones, Wijnaldum, J Henderson (Keïta 81′); Mané, Firmino (Jota 73′), Salah.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (4-3-3): Patrício; Marçal, Coady, Boly, Semedo; Neves (F Silva 62′), Moutinho, Dendoncker; Neto (Vitinha 79′), Podence (Aït-Nouri 71′), Traoré.

I really rate it, I think 3 big hitters is enough, I also think managers will soon be demanding Trent or Robertson within the next few weeks.. 9/10

I have Ziyech and want Bruno (like almost everybody). However, I can only get him if I find the 2.2m difference which would mean downgrading DCL to Antonio or ripping up my defence. Should I look at Bruno still or just get Grealish for his nice next 4 fixtures?

There will be pens in that game though. That said, I think getting Grealish is the right move given the fixtures and in the name of balance

Hhahaha sadly not. I think with pens being handed out left, right and centre this season and it being a derby, there will be at least 1 or 2 of them.

I have to use my 2 FTs this week and want to get rid of Ziyech before I lose more value on him. It doesn't make sense to sell him this week and then sell whoever I buy next week to get Bruno

My thoughts too. The question is, how do I get him in. It is basically Grealish and DCL or Antonio and Bruno

Cheers for the suggestion. Unfortunately not possible for me. My front line is already DCL, Watkins and Bamford. Midfield is Salah, Son, Ziyech, KDB and Soucek. This is why I am toying with the idea of DCL to Antonio. It is still WHU though and DCL is just on fire this season.

Watkins to Brewster? Does that help, frees up 1.6m

Sadly no. Still leaves me 0.7m short. I also think downgrading Bamford or Watkins to Brewster is worse, in terms of point potential, than downgrading DCL to Antonio i.e. Antonio will definitely earn more points than Brewster (but definitely less than DCL). I think it may just be accepting that I can't have Bruno, Son, KDB and Salah in the same midfield.

Yes, last year he did not miss any of the festive fixtures in the league. He even started two matches only two days apart on 27 and 29 Dec.

If he is going to miss any matches this season, it would probably be Newcastle on the 26th with Everton following only two days later on the 28th.

Which is the best way to get Salah?I prefer to have Vardy for the next two fixtures over Werner but not enough money without taking a hit.

    Targett/Coufal/James
    Son/Grealish/Ziyech*/Kdb
    Werner/Vardy/Dcl

    Steer/Pva/McCarthy/Douglas

Need to sort out my defence to get at least 4 playing (currently only have 3)

So is Chilwell and Mitchell to Dier and James worth it? Would be for free.

    Would give me

    Dier James Justin Coufal Douglas.

Or should I do over the next 2 weeks, do
    Chilwell to James
    Justin to Dier
    Coufal to Matip
Romeo to Burke? Would be a -4 in total.

    Would give me this;

    Martinez
    James Dier Matip
    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish
    Kane Bamford DCL

    Steer Burke Mitchell Douglas

I’m not worried about benching as I much prefer to have it all on the pitch. If they are benched so be it. I also think the players I have are pretty much 95% nailed with the odd benching.

Jota I already have. He'll play this week and then I'll probably look to get rid for Fernandes. I think Fernandes + Bamford is far superior to Vardy + Jota.

The last move is speculative. Basically...

Son has liv LEI wol vs Mahrez who has WBA sou NEW.

I think Mahrez has put in some extremely good performances. The fixtures are there for him to haul big time. I think over these 4 games, he can seriously outscore Son if he keeps his form up.

How do you think Lateriser has been able to do so well recently? Playing Pep Roulette is a secret route to points. You need to watch the games observe who's in favor and then invest accordingly.

            If Mahrez gets 15, 1, 12 and 1. He's doing better than someone who's getting 8, 6, 5, 6.

I think it's a case of if you have Son already, stick with him.

If you don't though and are looking at a Ziyech replacement or something, I would go Mahrez now over Son for sure with an eye to switch back in 16.

I thought something similar but then he's gone and scored a 10 pointer and a 13 pointer in 2 of 3 games of difficult fixtures. So I've gotten him back and im not moving from him till he gets injured or something.

This. I'm selling Mahrez for Grealish this week, even though Mahrez clearly has a higher ceiling. It's so important to have players who are guaranteed starts at this time of year.

I think it's a really big mistake to sell Mahrez if you own him already. Truly. He's playing really well.

Mahrez was unlucky vs Fulham, could easily walked away with 3 x assists, he is playing well atm

Done a -4 this week to get Salah & Bamford (moved on vardy & ziyech) and then thinking next week to use wildcard to move to the power 5 midfield (lose Kane).

    Sounds like a reasonable plan?

        Salah / KDB / Son / Fernandes / Grealish

I think 4 big hitters is too many, and messes up the balance I have De Bruyne Salah Son(will be Fernandes next week), i also think Trent or Robertson will become a must in the next few weeks, I’ve gone early on Trent, those 22 minutes did enough for me to get in on him now, especially with Fulham up next and Alisson reported to be back..

I honestly do expect him to go back to his best but i also think James Chilwell are better value than him and my 3rd defender is the one I'll be changing my transfer on every week so he faces Sheffield or Burnley everytime. And I'll not change my front 7 barring any injuries. So where do i fit in Trent

I think I’m just trying to be different, and getting slightly ahead of the curve, but I’m not sure it’s a bad thing... Do you have a decent bench?

              • 7 Years
              5 years, 1 hour ago

No. My bench never gives me points at the right time. I'm not forsaking my team for 2 weeks of extra 1 or 2 pointers that i could make and exceed in the week before by having a player like Son instead of Bowen in my team.

                • 7 Years

I say 2 weeks because this is the only time a bench is needed. When 3 games are played in a week. They're most likely to play 4 out of 6 of those games and there's still even a chance they're subbed on for the other 2 as well. So again bench wasted. Id rather just have 10 players during that week than waste money on a bench that doesn't give me more than 1 point 90% of the time.

Madness to consider Mahrez (mun) & Walker (mun) -> Son (cpl) & Bednarek (SHU) for a -8 hit? Mahrez and Walker were always short-term 'punts' for City's good few fixtures which have already backfired and if I delay these transfers I will likely be priced out and then left with a very poor bench over next few GWs (Brewster, Kilman, Mitchell!).

Should I just cut my losses and make the transfers, accepting Mahrez/Walker could still score well over next few weeks? (if they start!!). Thinking I will make up the 8 points easily with nailed players on the bench as we enter rotations season...

    Thanks

Oh yeah I forgot about that jammy pen yesterday. Leicester's attacks have been really woeful lately their games used to be entertaining. Brighton were really boring yesterday with everyone defending. They were my whipping boys after 3 weeks but since then they had tightened up.

    Here feast on these...

Son vs Mahrez in last 4 matches

    xG: 0.73 vs 1.16
    xA: 0.29 vs 0.81
Pen Area Touches: 6 vs 33
    Goal Attempts: 6 vs 9
Goal Attempts in Box: 2 vs 7
Next fixtures: cry liv LEI wol vs mun WBA sou NEW

I think if Mahrez can keep his form up, he can beat Son by a lot of points in the next few weeks. It's a real opportunity. I would definitely not be getting rid of Mahrez if I had him and I'm thinking about whether it might be worth doing Son > Mahrez in GW 13 for a hit. That can pay off instantly.

      • 15 Years

Mahrez has had SHU BUR FUL in the time where Son had City, Chelsea and Arsenal so it's hard to compare. I think it could work until gw16 but then spurs fixtures are great.

However, Son 32 vs 27 Mahrez & Son has had the tougher fixtures, albeit just.

Mahrez bench is not really a factor because he's always at risk of being benched whilst Son isn't.

It could pay off given the fixtures, but given Son is a man in form & 60% ownership I won't be selling any time soon.

    3. Kryptonite666
      • 6 Years

Do Stats reveal the full picture though ? mahrez takes a lot of low power shots straight to the goal keeper. Son on the other hand is more clinical and relies on his pace, power and finishing. Something worth keeping in mind. Mahrez and City play possession football as opposed to Son and Vardy who rely on counter attacking football.

Ultimately if you are convinced go for it. Else you’ll kick yourself for not relying on your gut

Perhaps they don't. But come on, over GW 13,14,15, my money would firmly be on Mahrez to outscore Son. Will it be enough to justify a transfer out and then back in for 16? That's 8 points. Perhaps not. But it's an opportunity for sure.

Yeah but big different is that, u can "allways trust" Son, but u really cant trust Mahrez.
Mahrez will get those odd mega hauls, but he will share the point much more than Son. And the rotation risk etc.

It doesn't matter if you trust players or any of that. It's about points. Does Mahrez outscore Son with WBA sou NEW. I think he absolutely does.

Don't like hokey cokey of Son > Mahrez > Son because that costs effectively 8 points and team value, but if you don't have either, Mahrez is a better pick imo.

Interesting analysis, Camzy. And yet if Son was performing equal to his xG this season, he wouldn’t be 2nd top scorer in the league, he’d be 21st below Neal Maupay.

True as well. And Son is an xG overperformer every year. Maybe it shouldn't be Son who makes way, because he is an outstanding pick. But in any case, Mahrez should be much higher on people's shopping list than he is imo.

I'm seeing Jota being picked more, I'm seeing some random Zahas and of course all the Ziyech sellers moving for Son. Ziyech sellers should be going for Mahrez imo unless they have the funding to make it all the way up to the holy trinity.

    RTM 1/10 THX!

    Martinez
    Chilwell Zouma Dias
    Son Salah Grealish KDB Bruno
    DCL Bamford.

On the bench only likely to get point is Brewster.

Nailed it. However, could downgrade Zou or Chilly > James and invest in a DFer who will play on your bench like Coufal or Dallas and you'll have a better squad (assuming this is WC team?)
