Fixtures not on Wilson’s side as loss of Andersen could aid Saints in Gameweek 15

Newcastle United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) own goal
  • Assists: Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Wilson x3, Adarabioyo x2, Sean Longstaff (£4.7m) x1

Callum Wilson (£6.6m) was essentially the only Fantasy man in town for Newcastle’s draw with Fulham, and he didn’t disappoint.

The 17.3%-owned striker scored his eighth goal of the season to earn a point for the Magpies in a game long on controversy and a lot shorter on the nicer things of a footballing life, such as ‘interest’ and ‘skill’.

One-Man Show

Aside from Wilson, the next most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset on display was Fulham forward and ‘ghost team’ staple Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m and 4.3%).

But, like the rest of his season so far, the less said about him, the better.

It really was all about Wilson on Saturday night – and not entirely for good reasons.

He earned the penalty that drew his side level by throwing himself down in the area under a challenge from Joachim Andersen (£4.5m).

Referee Graham Scott initially awarded the penalty and although VAR showed what contact there was probably started and finished outside the area, he stuck with his decision and sent off Andersen for good measure.

That prompted one of the more honest managerial comments, from Fulham boss Scott Parker, post-match:

I think there will definitely be an appeal. I’ve gone and looked over the penalty incident and I’m not saying this with emotion or bias: I don’t understand how he’s given the penalty.

The game has changed drastically, hasn’t it, and I think we can see that. For what I have just seen – and I’m not standing here trying to defend it – the contact was made outside of the box and he then goes into the box and dives.

Not that Wilson’s FPL ownership were complaining when he picked himself up off the floor, slotted home the penalty – his fourth of the season – and earned maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Wilson is currently the fifth most prolific striker in the game, with 82 points, and only eight players have a better total overall.

In the six games in which he has found the back of the net, he has gained bonus points in all of them.

The ‘Best’ of the Rest

Despite all those points, investing in Wilson over the short term looks ill advised.

Newcastle travel to Manchester City next before there are visits from Liverpool and Leicester City either side of New Year’s Day.

Defensively, they’ve kept just one clean sheet in 12 matches, and the 3,322 brave souls who hoped Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) might help rectify that were treated to a comedy own goal when a wayward header from Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) hit him in the face and went into the net.

As for Fulham, starts for Mitrovic and Tom Cairney (£5.3m) didn’t particularly galvanise the Cottagers’ attack, although the latter did end up joint-top for attempts, with three.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.3m) spurned their best chances, which has been a recurring theme for the team as a whole this season.

A team that’s scored just twice in four Gameweeks might not worry their next three opponents, Southampton (at home) and Spurs and Burnley (both away), while the loss of the quietly impressive Andersen will be felt at the back on Boxing Day.

Since making his first start in Gameweek 7, he’s helped the side to both of their clean sheets for the season while conceding nine goals in eight games – they’d let in 14 in the first six.

The prospects of Che Adams (£6.0m) returning points appear all the better for Andersen’s unavailability – appeal pending, of course.

Despite the recent upturn in form, a tricky schedule and a Blank Gameweek 18 is unlikely to inspire much investment in this Fulham side, with even their pair of Double Gameweek 19 fixtures involving visits from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Dummett (Fraser 79), Clark, Fernández (Hayden 45), Yedlin; Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almirón; Joelinton (Gayle 75), C Wilson.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Zambo Anguissa, Lemina; Lookman (Bryan 90+4), Cairney (Hector 64), Cavaleiro; Mitrović (Loftus-Cheek 76).

Lessons learned from FPL Gameweek 14

    Here's an interesting thought.

    KdB > Mane now.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think that Mane will outscore KdB for WBA sou new vs KdB's NEW eve che.

It has very high upside, you get a huge sword in Mane which also persists for the DGW. And then you can do Mane > KdB in GW20 if City's form improves. If not, you do somethign else.

Salah double. I think Salah is essential on current form and with the fixtures he has.

Things which keep me away from Mane
      1. I'll never captain him. (Will Cap Salah in Liverpool's plum fixtures)
      2. No set pieces
      3. Not as talismanic as KdB. ( Can imagine Liverpool scoring 4 without mane involved. Can't do the same for KdB)

This is all true. But I'm not going to cap KdB at all until GW20 at the earliest. So captaincy doesn't factor in.

I'd also get Mane for the DGW over KdB's lone week.

Can you keep KdB for 18 and then do a 'hockey-cockey' with Mane so that you have him for the double and KdB back for the nice run from 20?

I mean... I could put it off a week but feel like this is a better shout.

I'm probably not gonna do it though. Just visited the members area to compare the two and KdB is crushing him on stats. Mane is also not on great form. It will basically cost me 4 points to get rid and 4 points to get back. Not entirely confident Mane can beat KdB over that time.

        But just a thought!

I don't think it's a bad idea. It's just higher variance. If Mane smashes it, it could pay off.

I think I am selling KDB for Son between GW16-19 and then make the switch back to KDB in GW20.

KDB's stats are really good but it's been really frustrating watching City play last two games. It's not like they are unlucky they just don't seem as sharp as they usually are.

I'd want coverage in both the banker games on Boxing Day tbh. There's always a chance an extra week of Big Sam will see WBA better organised as spoilers, and Newcastle are genuinely awful.

Following on from my previous post.

    Scenario:
If I was to play my FH in GW18 & BB in GW19.

And if i made my transfer in GW18 (to plan for my BB in GW19) before activating my FH, would my transfer not get recognised?

    That make sense?

No it would not. When you play FH, it freezes your team from the week before including any money ITB.

Your original team keeps any price changes but your FH team does not.

So for instance if Salah goes up in the blank GW (no idea why he would...) you'd keep that team value when you get your squad back in 19.

Logical with FH DGW 19 with the team below?

Thinking team will be good for BGW 18 if I do the following moves, although Brewster and Mitchell might not start:

    1. Balbuena to Stones
    2. Bamford to Wilson
(maby Mirchell to Lewis, but uncertain it's worth it)

But will have to burn 2-3 FTs though.

    Martinez* Steer*
    Zouma Taylor Lamptey* Balbuena Mitchell*
    Salah Bruno KDB* Son* Grealish*
    DCL* Bamford Brewster*

Possible team for DGW19. Any thoughts?
Thinking about BB that week, so trying to get in as many with doubles as possible.
    All subject to change, ofc.

    In short:
    13 players with doubles: 3 WHU, 3 LEE, 2 CHE, 3 SOU, 1 LIV, 1 MUN
2 players without doubles: KDB (CRY), Son (shu)

    Mendy McCarthy
    Chilwell Coufal Dallas Ayling KWP

If I want this team I have to do 8 transfers (4 hits). If I were to get in less players with doubles, who would you prioritize?

      My current team:
      Martinez Steer
      Chilwell Cresswell Dallas KWP Lewis
      Salah KDB Bruno Son Bissouma
      DCL Bamford Wilson

The transfers I have to make to get my team above:
      1. DCL -> Antonio
      2. KDB -> Mané
      3. Martinez -> Mendy
      4. Bissouma -> Soucek
      5. Steer -> McCarthy
      6. Wilson -> Adams

It seems fairly low value to FH 18 or is there something I'm missing. Would prefer using transfers to get 7 or 8 players and then cap kdb maybe. No fixture really convinces me apart from City's and even they are a bit suspect going forward.

Right now, setting my sight on FH gw19 but that may change depending on the carabao this week

Good point. As at this moment in time I'll have five playing in it but they're playing against each other and City aside I'm not so thrilled. I'll find a way to get in kane and son so that makes it seven. Just would rather even play 6 players than FH that week. Just need to nail the cap

      Same thinking here.

I'll have 9 starting players GW18 & will FH to load up on DGW players in 19

Would rather have a team with DGW players beyond gw19 compared to a team full of blank GW players.

I don't understand this mentality. It's a gameweek like any other. A blank gameweek by nature is going to be worse than one with 5 more fixtures.

By FH'ing you GUARANTEE value in replacing guys who will score 0 points.

KdB and Son might not have a DGW in 19 but at least they have a game. They can get double digits. Salah and Fernandes do not have a game in 18. They are guaranteed to score 0. FH in 18 guarantees value. It's greedy to write-off an entire week just so you can potentially FH for a huge week later.

I think the reason I'm leaning the the other way is I think a longer term team of DGW19 players looks better than a team with more BGW players. I've not looked into it in too much detail though so I could be wrong haha

There is a reason why we are given one free transfer each week. Not like I can't just bring in the DGW players later after FH 19. No guarantee Salah outscores son or Kane in GW 20. Lastly, it's based on how ones squad looks. If I have 3 DGW players in my team and 10 BGW 18 players, it's much easier to prepare for the BGW 18 as opposed to trying to bring in 8 dgw players in 4 weeks.

Yeh obviously if you are much better set up currently to go that way then that's the way for you - My team is quite even between BGW and DGW players so I can go either way and I think my team looks better adding DGW players and having DGW players after DGW rather than BGW. All depends on your team at the moment I guess!

I am leaning towards FH 18 and TC 19 on Salah with strong first eleven.
Saving BB and WC for future.
Preparing for BB gmwk 19 requiers 3 hits in my case and that's the case if no one gets injured or droped.plus I need second GK.
If I play TC I wont take hits for 18/19,and later on could get better bench with higher TV,two keepers with 2 fixtures, also no hits by playing WC.
I can get strong first eleven in gmwk 19 and not have 0.5 on the bench every week in second GK.
I know that we don't have same teams, but feel free to tell me cons to this strategy

I like this strategy. It's what I'm leaning towards at the moment. I would have to take two or three hits to get a good DGW19 BB team and that doesn't seem worth it when I can take no hits, use TC on Salah, and save BB for later.

Hmm presuming James is out for 1-2 weeks, who’s the replacement for the same value or less? Stones? Dier? Other?

Why take him out for such a short time? No bench cover? I'll just be playing Taylor over him till he's back.

      3. Amartey Partey

I’d hold on to him and bench for one week.

Unless he has an op and is ruled out for a month, I'm just gonna bench James in the hopes he'll be back for DGW19.

No operation confirmed so I’d expect him out tonight and hopefully only 1 more game

Yes, precisely. No bench cover. I had Lewis who got dropped, and I’ve Lamptey who is also nursing a knock

I’ve no pressing issues anywhere else, but this week I’ve only 1 playing defender (presuming James is out), so James to possibly Dier/Stones maybe was the thought. I’d like to get James back ASAP once fit however but I’m short in the def department

Then I guess you might be better of sorting out Lewis if you have something ITB. Even Lamptey could / should be moved

Would it be worth it to -4 and bench boost this lot in GW19?

Johnstone (wol/whu), would be Martinez without hit if not using BB
      Taylor (whu/liv)
      Son (shu)
      DCL (avl)

Gents, this is my current team. Am a bit stuck on what transfers to make and have 2 FTs, 0.1 ITB. Any suggestions?

      Martinez / 4.0

      Chilwell / KWP / Dallas / Coufal / Stones

      Salah / KDB / Son / Bruno / Bisouma

      Bamford / Watkins / DCL

If FH 18 mate you should try get players in now for the DGW in 19.
So maybe Watkins>Adams and could leave enuff to get Mitchell to a playing defender. If not maybe Grealish would be my sacrifice after next week. Goodluck
