Budget forward Welbeck in form as Blades’ set-play woes bode well for Everton

BRIGHTON 1-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED

  • Goals: Danny Welbeck (£5.5m)| Jayden Bogle (£4.3m)
  • Assists: David McGoldrick (£5.2m)
  • Bonus: Welbeck x3, Solly March (£5.0m) x2, Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) x1
  • Red cards: John Lundstram (£5.0m)

ARE YOU WEL?

Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) came off the bench to rescue a point for Brighton against a ten-man Sheffield United in Gameweek 14.

The striker, who was rotated by Graham Potter amid the congested fixture calendar, was sent on to replace Neal Maupay (£6.1m) after 65 minutes.

A Brighton free-kick in the 88th minute was poorly dealt with by Sheffield United, as the ball hit off Chris Basham (£4.7m) before landing in front of Welbeck.

The budget forward made no mistake from extremely close range, while also mopping up three bonus points for his 1.4% ownership.

Welbeck has four attacking returns in over the past six Gameweeks and only made his first start for the Seagulls in Gameweek 8 after building up match fitness.

The striker does have plenty of competition in the Brighton ranks but Gameweek 14 was his first time on the bench since making Potter’s XI in Gameweek 8.

While another benching in either Gameweek 15 or 16 is very possible given that little more than 48 hours separates Albion’s next two fixtures, Welbeck is posing the Seagulls’ main goal threat at present – Aaron Connolly (£5.3m) and Neal Maupay (£6.1m) haven’t scored in the last ten Gameweeks – and he will likely start more games than not in the weeks ahead.

He was denied a second goal when his late, on-target header was cleared by Basham, with a follow-up effort from Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£5.4m) hitting the crossbar.

TROUBLE BREWS

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) lasted just 53 minutes on his first start Sheffield United start since Gameweek 8.

A first-half red card for John Lundstram (£5.0m) may not have helped the budget striker’s chances of staying the course at the Amex.

But Brewster has only managed 90 minutes once so far in his fledgling Blades career.

While the ex-Liverpool forward may have looked a budget blessing for FPL bosses after his transfer to Bramall Lane, it appears that Brewster is currently more of a curse in Fantasy terms.

JOHN LUNGESTRAM

Former FPL hero John Lundstram (£5.0m) received a VAR-assisted red card late in the first half for a lunging, full-force tackle on Joel Veltman (£4.3m). The midfielder will miss the next three gameweeks.

Sander Berge (£5.0m) was sidelined in Gameweek 14 with a hamstring injury and is now a long-term injury loss for the Blades, as Wilder finds himself without two senior midfielders for Christmas.

“A real freak injury. He has ripped the tendon away from the bone.” – Wilder on Berge

John Fleck (£5.6m), however, is available after being hooked in the first half on tactical grounds. Wilder explained:

It wasn’t an injury to John, it was a tactical one. We wanted to get another body at the top of the pitch.

Lundstram’s dismissal forced Wilder into a 4-4-1 formation for a short period in second half, before Brewster’s substitution saw a return to a back five. As can happen when teams go down to 10 men, it was a case of Brighton attack versus Sheffield United defence in the second period.

The Blades’ plan to soak up pressure and counter attack when possible worked to perfection on 63 minutes as substitute Oliver Burke (£4.3m) found Enda Stevens (£5.1m) in the Brighton half.

The Ireland defender found the run of his countryman David McGoldrick (£5.2m), who slipped the ball across the box for Jayden Bogle (£4.3m).

The Premier League debutant, who replaced Brewster, saw his effort deflect off Adam Webster (£4.4m) before looping over Robert Sanchez (£4.4m) in the Brighton goal.

SET PLAY TO THE WHISTLE

Both of these sides play in Blank Gameweek 18, with the Blades welcoming Newcastle to Bramall Lane while the Seagulls face a trip to Manchester City.

That looks to be the next time FPL bosses will consider captaining a player facing either Brighton or Sheffield United, with Man City assets the standout picks on paper despite several lacklustre showings in attack.

Brighton’s defensive numbers, then, will be of keen interest over the coming Gameweeks but not much can be read into those statistics from this particular game considering the Seagulls’ numerical advantage.

Owners of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), meanwhile, will be pleased to see that Sheffield United conceded another eight shots from set plays against Brighton. The Toffees visit Bramall Lane in Gameweek 15.

On the missing Tariq Lamptey (£4.8m), Potter said pre-game:

Tariq has got a slight problem with his hamstring, so he’s ruled out of the game.

Brighton XI (3-4-2-1): R Sánchez; White (Zeqiri 71′), Webster, Dunk; March, Bissouma, Lallana, Veltman (Jahanbakhsh 46′); Trossard, Maupay (Welbeck 65′); Connolly.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; J Robinson, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck (Burke 32′), Ampadu, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick (Osborn 70′), Brewster (Bogle 53′).

    Wilson --> Bamford until GW18.

Will assess Reece James aswell, depending on how bad it is.

    2 FTs, 0,2 ITB

    Anything else you would change?

    Mendy
    James - Dier- Justin
    Salah - Grealish - Son - Fernandes
    Vardy - Wilson - DCL
    (Button - Bissouma - Coufal - Ferguson)

Is it worth doing Mitchel > Douglas to bank £0.2m this week?

    McCarthy (£4m)
    Chilwell, Cancelo, Lamptey (Justin, Mitchell)
    Salah, Son, Bruno, Grealish (Romeu)
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

Or is there something else worth doing with my 1FT?

Pretty similar teams, look mine above.

I would love 3 playing assets on the bench. But if your economy doesn't allow it, then rather have the 0,2 for the attack than sitting on the bench not playing.

But I would probably save the FT if I was you.

Yeah im very much a bench minimalist man, two playing options fine for me outside of bench boost prep.

Quite enjoying the debate that rages every page about BGW-DGW strategies.

Every team is different, so there is no right and wrong answer really.

But I would urge people to look at before the blank and double, as well as after the bgw and dgw. Are the transfers you are making before them going to lose you points in the meantime? Are you going to happy with your team once GW20 is upon us?

For me, I'm happy with my team now so don't want to start ripping it all up to fit in DGWers for 19 and making transfers like Forster > Johnstone and Mitchell > Taylor for hits so I can have a playing DGW bench - to then have too much cash on the bench and have to make transfers to sort it out again after GW20. So I'll be going for FH in 19 and winging BGW18 with 9 players. My major downside is that I will have to remove Bruno to get Son and then do the reverse in GW20 to get him back. Other than that, I'm happy with my strategy.

It's going to take a lot of thinking and planning to get this right. And, actually spending the time on your transfers page to see what works out for your team and if the moves you're making don't hinder your points scoring outside of BGW & DGW.

Good luck everybody - hope you all get green arrows (just marginally smaller green than me though)

I've been thinking of a similar approach - I'll be doing the same transfers with Bruno and Son.

Same strategy but agree there is no one size fits all. For me it would cause too much disruption and selling of players I have value locked into and would want back to do much else.

Any thoughts on using just FH in DGW19 and fielding around 8 players for BGW18?

Allows saving of BB for the Fa cup QF DGW, which is a more appropriate time to play WC afterwards to get the team in shape for the season run in. Not too sure about the tactic of using FH, BB and WC all in January.

Going FH for 18. Depends a lot on what players you have currently and possibly playing WC soon after GW19.

    5. thegaffer82
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

Defintely a valid strategy - and the one I will be adopting.

I can't see many gains for BGW FHers as I'll have all the main guys for that week - 2 city, 3 Spurs, 2 Villa + Lord Lamptey. I'm also considering a punt on Neto that week too.

DGW FH should compete with any other strategy that week too as you can cherry pick the best players and pump all the money into the strating XI.

Then hopefully, carrying TC, BB & WC to later in the season can reap some rewards

But by gw19 I can have a squad of 15 (fairly) sure-starters, and all these teams have a lot to play for so I expect all first-teamers to play. Then I can wildcard afterwards.

I don't want too much value on my bench later in the season so don't intend to have a squad worthy of bench-boosting later on.

      2. thegaffer82
        • 12 Years
        3 years, 3 months ago

The problem with this is having to use 2nd WC so early.

There'll be another BGW - DGW coming, possibly two.

        You'll struggle for those IMO

We shouldn't necessarily NEED to wildcard immediately after the dwg. I believe I'll have a team with Salah, Fernandes, Son, robertson and chilwell and three of the cheaper strikers (i.e. bamford, Adams and Antonio). Keeper looks like it'll still be martinez, (I already have johnstone as sub keeper.)

Most of them I probably won't want to change in gameweek 20. I can just address critical issues and slowly sculpt my team to cut away to excess value from the bench over a number of gameweeks. Thus saving my wildcard for when needed.

I'll be FH in gw18 and BB in gw19 I'll have 13 players playing twice and 2 playing once. Then my team reverts back to my gw17 team in gw20 which is set up really nicely for the next 6 games after that.

I have Bruno, Kane, Son and KdB and went with KdB. He's not likely to ever go too massive, whereas the Spurs duo can during their upcoming run. And was the closest in value to Salah so did less damage elsewhere (Lamptey to Ayling was all i needed).

Surely gonna use 2 chips in gws18, 19.
    Gw 18 free hit locked.
    Gw19 between BB and TC.
Can form a great BB team without taking hits, but without a second keeper. My only single gw players are likely to be Martinez Son and Kane. But I dont know if Salah TC outscore or match the Bench Boost option. This is gonna happen if Salah score around 25 points...

It's the biggest DGW of the season probably... I will have 11 players playing twice and 3 players playing once. It's like having 25 players in the same gw... And this is gonna come without hits and i will also have a great team afterwards. With some bench option that will help me field 11 players for blank gameweeks 26 and 29

Bench boost will depend on what players you have available to you. If your bench is going to be made up of 2s and 3s then TC is probably worth it. If you think you have a few returns on the bench also then BB is the more sensible option I feel.

There will be other TC DGW opportunities to come, but you may not always have the opportunity to build a good BB squad without hits or wildcards.

BB is a trap! It has been for me anyway. TC if you've an attacking option in red-hot form, his opposition mightn't be so important if he's red-hot like Aguero, Salah, Kane, Vardy, Dé Bruyne, Son can be.

This is true, but you may also have 4 on the bench that can return at least once each across their 8 games. The next DGW may be ideal for TC on an attacking player in form, but terrible for a BB.

Point I’m making is it’s all about personal circumstances I think, as nobody knows what is going to happen later in the season so it’s impossible trying to plan for it.

I have 0 minutes coming from defenders this week.

    Martinez
    Bellerin Gabriel Lamptey*
    KDB Mahrez Bruno Grealish Saka
    Martial Bamford

    McCarthy | Lewis, Brewster, Mitchell

    1FT. 5.9 ITB.

My plan was to sell Brewster for Aguero (with 0.1 to spare), but it looks like it may be a little premature, and I have issues with Bellerin, Lamptey, Mahrez, Lewis, Brewster and Mitchell.

I could sell Mahrez for Son, leaving me enough money to sell Bamford for Aguero. I'm liking this idea, since I plan to navigate GW18 without the FH. This doesn't solve my defensive problems though.

Is it time to take a hit. Any ideas?

I’ve been debating this as well. I have the opportunity to get what I feel is a good GW19 squad and FH in GW18. Nobody knows what will happen later in the season, but worst case scenario is I’ll need to use my WC. I think it’s just as risky to not use it now just in case and then be left with a poor BGW/DGW, as it is to use it and be left potentially exposed later.

You don't need 11 DGWers in 19. It's a big myth every year. City/Spurs have good fixtures but only 1 game, they'll outscore many players who have a double game week. Rocking with 7/8 is perfectly fine.

Even having only 8/9 players in Gameweek 18 is probably fine.

Absolutely. I will have Spurs and City players in my GW19 team. But I’m in a position where I can make plans now to give me a strong bench with doublers, which is where I think it comes down to personal preference/opinion on the future BB opportunities.

I don’t think there’s really a wrong way to go about it using 2 chips. 3 chips is a bit overkill though.

    3. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

No. Gonna be a balls to even get 10 for GW18 and I think current team would be diminished, plus hits to get 11 that GW. By GW20 my poor rank would freefalling.

It's possible to play 9 in 18 and then have 8 DGWers in 19 so I don't agree that your rank would be in freefall. People like KDB/Kane/Son/Grealish don't have a double game week but have nice fixtures anyway.

I think using zero chips is letting a bumper DGW slip through your grasp without taking advantage.

Martinez in goals, who to start? The bookies have both just as likely to concede.

    A) Zouma (ars) - safe option, Martinez gives me Villa cover while Zouma covers me against the Chelsea defence that my ML opponents have. Potential attacking returns given Arsenal’s set piece frailties.

    B) Targett (CRY) - risky option due to double Villa defence, but potentially greater rewards as would be a big differential in the ML should Villa keep a CS and Chelsea concede.
