Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 15?

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with a traditional shoot-out between Liverpool and Manchester City for the Gameweek 15 captaincy.

With Manchester United, Spurs and Leicester all facing more evenly-matched opponents during the Boxing Day fixtures, attention is firmly on Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) and their colleagues.

They face West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United respectively, two favourable opponents – but which asset is the best for the armband?

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here and ready to help you make the best choice.

As this uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

Unsurprisingly, it is Salah who tops the captain poll for Gameweek 15. West Bromwich Albion have conceded the second-highest number of goals both in all matches this season (17), and on the road (14).

And let’s not forget how hot Salah’s form has been anyway. In just half-an-hour at Selhurst Park, he racked up 16 points, having averaged 8.8 points per game in the four outings beforehand.

As a result, a whopping 67.1% of you are going for a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach for Boxing Day.

Even though he is the second-most-backed candidate for Gameweek 15, De Bruyne trails the Egyptian by 58.2 percentage points.

The case for the Belgian is not as much of a downgrade as some might think though. He has returned points of some kind in each of his last three at the Etihad Stadium, securing two double-digit hauls and averaging 9.3 points per game.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have an unenviable record when visiting Manchester City. They have lost their last five Premier League visits to the Etihad Stadium by a combined score of 21-3. Three of those meetings saw the home side score at least five times.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) has picked up 7.5% support for the armband despite scoring 17 points against Leeds and blanking in just one Premier League away match since joining Manchester United.

Leicester only have one clean sheet at home this season, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will fancy their chances of scoring, as do the 1.9% of our voters who backed Anthony Martial (£8.7m) for the captaincy.

Still, the Red Devils have been somewhat porous on the road in spite of their impressive win ratio in such matches, conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game away from home.

That’s good news for the 3.8% of our readers who voted for Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) in the poll. A fifth double-figure haul of the campaign at Spurs will be of great encouragement to them, although only one of those has come at the King Power Stadium, where Vardy averages 4.7 points per game this season.

Harry Kane (£11.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.8m), Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), Sadio Mané (£11.9m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) and Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) are the only other players backed by more than 1%.

    Am I crazy to consider:

    Cancelo + Grealish --> TAA + Raphinha?

    Rationale is that Cancelo may well be rested vs Newcastle, and TAA is part of my DGW19 plan anyhow and playing vs WBA. Grealish could punish me but fixtures not good and again doesn't have a DGW19 fixture.

    Other transfers to build up to DGW19 would be something along the lines of sterling, Nyland, Brewster, DCL out and Bowen, Adams, Fabianski, Werner/Vardy in

        2FT in the bank so I'd be wasting a transfer?

          I dont know your team but Grealish has Palace at home, maybe do Cancelo to another player and keep 1 more change for next week.

            Johnstone - Nyland

            Cancelo - KWP - C. Taylor - Dallas - Mitchell

            Salah - Fernandes - Sterling - Grealish - Son

            DCL - Bamford - Brewster

            Another option is Sterling + Mitchell --> TAA + Bowen but Sterling vs Newcastle not to be missed after a rest

            further issue here is if it's to be Cancelo --> TAA I'd need Grealish --? Raphinha for funds

        Issue is 2ft in the bank, so alternative is to waste a FT? I still need to remove the likes of Brewster, Nyland, Sterling prior to DGW19, and with free hit in 18 that's one less transfer opp

          Definitely set up for BB in 19. Wouldn't lose Sterling because of the fixture but any of the others, sure. Remove them.

            great thanks! Agree keep Sterling for now. My team is as follows

            Johnstone - Nyland

            Cancelo - KWP - C. Taylor - Dallas - Mitchell

            Salah - Fernandes - Sterling - Grealish - Son

            DCL - Bamford - Brewster

              That team looks expensive and with close to 0 ITB.

              If you really think Cancelo doesn't play, I'd remove him for someone like Zouma who has ars and then WHU as fixtures and then a nice DGW19.

                yeah my main concern is not wasting a transfer with a need to push in DGW19 players, and so downstream I'd be taking a -8 or -12.

                Feel TAA (or Robbo) is essential with DGW19, and if I'm going to bring them in then why not do so now with WBA (H) to max out?

                But you're right I've got 0.1itb only!

      I like the idea of bringing Raphinha. If it comes to Pool def, have you considered Robbo over TAA? Being different for the sake of being different is not the best route to take. Unless you have rationale behind. Why Robbo over TAA - TAA has Neco Willliams as a potential rotation, while Tsimikas and Milner are out. On top, Robbo takes more corners and seems more lively. Of course, TAA has direct FKs, but imo it doesn’t offset other arguments mentioned above.

      1. Davekitson
        • 9 Years

        really appreciate the input! I had just felt TAA seems to score big when he's fit but the points you make are valid, may well opt for robbo instead!

        Raphinha or Bowen was a toss up but to afford TAA/Robbo it'd have to be Grealish to Raphinha

        This. High risk, high reward. But I really can't see man city scoring without KDB having a hand in the goal as opposed to Sterling who can still register a blank after 3 goals. So, KDB for me.

      Higher risk over KdB but higher reward over him? I'm not so sure. But if you are chasing, it's a punt you can take given he's more or less assured of the start.

    Anyone else without their FH and 1st WC? My thought is to use FTs to get 8-9 players for the BGW, then target 7ish DGWers + TC Salah in the double.

    I'm going to fall behind somewhere without the FH, but I reckon that's decent in terms of damage control. Any thoughts?

    have 2ft and 0,4m itb. have used 1st WC..

    martinez (martin)
    james coufal kwp (taylor mitchell)
    salah bruno son grealish (bissouma)
    bamford kane dcl

    what moves do you lads think i could do here? rather lose kane or dcl or none? (i would lose more value - if kane out)
    a) dcl+mitchell -> adams+dallas
    b) kane+mitchell -> adams+robbo
    c) grealish+mitchell -> soucek/raphinha/bowen+dallas
    d) mitchell+grealish+dcl -> robbo+soucek/raphinha/bowen+adams
    later on: grealish*+bissouma+martin -> soucek/raphinha?+fabianski/mccarthy

    leaning a bit on D atm..

        I think he is a decent choice. Plus Arsenal do not concede loads in one game. In fact he will be my James' replacement this GW. I can see a few CS in the next 4.

      There aren't many good options i guess. I'm going Dias Holgate Dier in 18.

        Good options those. I am planning to go three cheap def for GW18 with Coufal and Dallas the other two. Save 2 FTs for 19 and convert those three into one 3.8, one 4.5 and one Chelsea.

    2.3 itb & 1 ft and considering:

    A) Konsa > TAA (have Robbo)
    B) hold and do Grealish > Son after GW15 (have Kane)

    Which is better?

      A for me seems like good next few weeks and Grealish is a good asset to hold imo

        AV fixtures tough fir the next few though and I don’t have any value of consequence locked up in Jack so I can easily bring him back when their fixtures improve

    Help appreciated!

    Was planning on holding FT but defence in tatters:

    Zouma *Chilwell *Vestergaard Dier Lewis

    A) Chilwell > Matip
    B) Chilwell + Grealish > Robbo + Raphina for a hit
    C) Hope that Vestergaard is fit to play and save

    Building into 18 and FH19 is so much easier for my team BUT

    - When do I BB then?
    - Someone suggested WC25, BB26 but if one wants to BB with 15 doublers in 26, how do they get a team out for bgw29 with only 3 FTs?
