Vardy and van Aanholt suffer from festive rotation as Palace host Leicester

Festive rotation has struck Fantasy Premier League managers as early as the first match of Gameweek 16 as Crystal Palace host Leicester City.

Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) is the biggest name to fall foul of the busy schedule, named on the bench with Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.6m) handed his usual centre-forward role.

The striker, who sits behind only Harry Kane (£11.0m) for most points among forwards this season (106), is joined among the Leicester substitutes by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) and Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.3m) returning from injury.

However, Vardy is not the only Foxes asset to miss out on Gameweek 16, James Maddison (£7.2m), Wesley Fofana (£5.0m) and Timothy Castagne (£5.7m) all missing out on the matchday squad entirely.

The central midfielder is managing an ongoing knee issue so sits out for precautionary reasons, while Fofana is in a similar position for a knock.

As a result, Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) is the most dangerous Fantasy asset to earn a start at Selhurst Park, involved in five goals this season.

James Justin‘s (£5.0m) impressive powers of recovery earn him yet another start, having already played every minute this season.

Crystal Palace have also undergone necessary Christmas rotation with Tyrick Mitchell (£3.9m) coming in for his first start since Gameweek 6, pushing Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) back to the bench.

The left-back is joined there by Eberechi Eze (£5.8m) while Jairo Riedewald (£4.4m) comes in for his first start since Gameweek 9.

Line-ups

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita; Mitchell, Tomkins, Kouyaté, Clyne; Schlupp, Riedewald, Milivojevic, A Townsend; Zaha, Benteke.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel; Thomas, Evans, Amartey, Justin; N Mendy, Choudhury; H Barnes, Praet, Pérez; Iheanacho.

Because Newcastle played Man City last GW (2 days ago) so Newcastle players may have Covid and spread it to Liverpool players.

For those hoping for a City DGW 19, it's not likely.

PL set up GW 18/19 to give each team a mini winter break. They'll want to protect that for every team if possible.

City have midweeks free during the Champions' League round of 16 (which are spread over 4 midweeks). Historically, they tend to reschedule their postponed games during these midweeks, hence the rumor of DGW 24 and 27.

Ben Crellin has pointed out that if United make it to the finals of all their cups, they will have more postponements than midweeks available (since the Europa League does not have the same spread the Champions' League does). If the PL hasn't rescheduled BUR-MUN during the winter break, they aren't likely to reschedule MCI-AVL there.

24 and 27 would be excellent.

But City are likely to rack up additional postponements due to the Cups

FA Cup QF can be rescheduled to GW26.

FA Cup SF has a free midweek afterward, so would likely just fall there.

I think there is one additional midweek free (need to check Ben Crellin's spreadsheet to confirm) if they make the Carabao Cup final.

GW26 is earmarked for FA Cup QF rescheduling. City have every chance of reaching the semifinals and final, so that would take up the slots in GW32 and 37. City will clock up another blank in GW33 if they reach the EFL Cup Final, and they still have their GW1 fixture to fit in. They need to catch up wherever they can.

Didn’t people say that about city vs west ham last season?

They eventually played it during the winter break

Fair point-I had forgotten about that. I think the difference is that the break was 2 weeks (between games) but only 1 week this year.

That said, they could still put United's and (one of) City's postponed fixtures in GW18/19. My guess is they either do both or neither one, possibly depending on postponement of the City-Chelsea fixture Jan 3.

You can still be unlucky, but if your planning didn’t allow for the likelihood of rotation and Covid you only have yourself to blame.
