Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

The coronavirus pandemic has put paid to another top-flight fixture, with Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Fulham now confirmed as being off.

Scott Parker’s side recorded a number of positive COVID-19 tests on Tuesday and reported that a further group of players were “showing symptoms” today, resulting in a request from the Cottagers to the Premier League to postpone their Wednesday night clash with Spurs.

It wasn’t until around three and a half hours before kick-off that word started to filter through of the game’s cancellation, with the official announcement not arriving until after 15:00 GMT.

This is the second Gameweek 16 fixture to fall by the wayside, with Everton’s meeting with a coronavirus-affected Manchester City called off on Monday.

The Gameweek 11 match between Aston Villa v Newcastle was a previous casualty, with Steve Bruce’s squad decimated by illness at the time.

The Magpies’ clash with Liverpool this evening will bring the curtain down on a curtailed Gameweek 16, with kick-off at St James Park at 20:00 GMT.

No announcement has yet been made on when the outstanding fixtures will be rescheduled for, nor has there been any clue as to what the impact will be in Gameweek 17.

Fulham are due to face Burnley on Sunday, the same day that Manchester City are at Chelsea.

The ramifications for Fantasy managers could extend beyond the current Gameweek, then, and the hope will be for clear-cut information before the next FPL deadline at 16:30 GMT on Friday.

The Premier League remain confident that the 2020/21 season can continue for the time being, saying in a statement today:

With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

Given what happened in March when similar noises made before a hasty retreat, we’ll have to take those words with a pinch of salt for the time being.

What exactly is the reasoning behind Robbo bench tonight? Liverpool have had wayyy more rest than the other top teams, don't play again til Monday, and need to bounce back from dropping points at home to WBA?

Think it's a bit silly to set this precedent of postponing games because a club demands it.

Either the PL needs to be called off for a few weeks or all games go ahead as planned. Teams can't get away with cancelling games to their benefit.

Open to abuse how? Teams are making false covid claims? Decisions of this magnitude can’t be made without evidence - How can you abuse it, by forcing your players to get covid?

No, by having players declare symptoms at a point in time where it's too late to re-test. If you were minded to have the game postponed it's an easy thing to do and almost impossible to prove.

        Exactly this.

    3. Hect.OR 98th

I agree. I suspect some of this is tactical. Better to level the playing field. Either use all players and put out any teams possible, or postpone the season. Otherwise, we have a situation where a club can pretty much force a postponement when the 'wrong' personnel in their team are unavailable.

      1. BenDavies
        • 11 Years

Exactly. It's getting out of hand and there needs to be a one-size-fits-all approach or it will continue to spiral out of control. Postpone all games or go ahead with all games. No in between.

Agreed, won’t be long before teams who don’t fancy it or need a rest will just say they have tons of players with symptoms and need to miss the Game.

To an extent, they have to. They can't be rushing around checking on the status of every player with some symptoms to see if they're being honest.

Well as someone probably more affected than most this week (22 from 6 with just Salah(c) to play), I'm looking at the positive side of things. As an experienced manager with a reasonably decent record, I really ought to be able to exploit the resulting blanks and doubles better than the others ahead of me in the rankings. I've made some bad decisions in the first half of this season, this gives me a chance to claw some ground back.

Exactly. I'm 150 points behind several players in my ML but they have spent chips at odd times and only look at the coming week's fixtures when making transfers. It's worked for them so far, it won't when things get chaotic.

So only 2 players in Fulham squad have Covid 19 and they postponed the game. FA is a joke of organisation. So when this match will be played, when Tottenham will have obligations in the Europa League... Clowns

just 2 ? that can't be right, if it is then its a complete joke that they postponed it

I heard that only 2 players were infected, but maybe they found more players who were infected so they postponed the match. I wrote this because i'm so pissed because this is only happening in PL. La Liga is okay,Serie A is ok,Ligue 1 is okay,Bundesliga also. Only this league have problems. And at the end i have Kane as captain and Son and DCL :/

Apperantly enough they say some others have symptoms just in time so that they don't have time to do the retest...

I don't understand one thing. How are Southampton players not infected(they played vs Fulham 4 days ago). I think its a only part of a game to get some rest. And PL doesnt learn from last season. if they continue to postpone matches, then the season will not end as planned, but will be prolonged and the organization of the European Championship will get into trouble, many players, mostly in England, will be severely tired. PL must correct this as soon as possible and make plans, otherwise there will be huge problems

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the FA although coincidentally they are a joke organisation

Lads, if Milner starts in place of either Trent or Robbo would he be on pens ahead of Salah?

Salah has taken with Milner on the field before? But I guess if its a penalty in the 90th minute and the score 0-0 that Milner will take it

Remember Milner being my most hated FPL player for this reaaon back when not everyone owned Salah. Can see him rekindling that old antipathy tonight.

Looking at it positively, I'll have a well rested counter expert Son captain vs a tired and naively attacking Leeds side...

Never thought I'd be so glad to get Bissouma's 2pts off the bench.
