Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

The coronavirus pandemic has put paid to another top-flight fixture, with Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Fulham now confirmed as being off.

Scott Parker’s side recorded a number of positive COVID-19 tests on Tuesday and reported that a further group of players were “showing symptoms” today, resulting in a request from the Cottagers to the Premier League to postpone their Wednesday night clash with Spurs.

It wasn’t until around three and a half hours before kick-off that word started to filter through of the game’s cancellation, with the official announcement not arriving until after 15:00 GMT.

This is the second Gameweek 16 fixture to fall by the wayside, with Everton’s meeting with a coronavirus-affected Manchester City called off on Monday.

The Gameweek 11 match between Aston Villa v Newcastle was a previous casualty, with Steve Bruce’s squad decimated by illness at the time.

The Magpies’ clash with Liverpool this evening will bring the curtain down on a curtailed Gameweek 16, with kick-off at St James Park at 20:00 GMT.

No announcement has yet been made on when the outstanding fixtures will be rescheduled for, nor has there been any clue as to what the impact will be in Gameweek 17.

Fulham are due to face Burnley on Sunday, the same day that Manchester City are at Chelsea.

The ramifications for Fantasy managers could extend beyond the current Gameweek, then, and the hope will be for clear-cut information before the next FPL deadline at 16:30 GMT on Friday.

The Premier League remain confident that the 2020/21 season can continue for the time being, saying in a statement today:

With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

Given what happened in March when similar noises made before a hasty retreat, we’ll have to take those words with a pinch of salt for the time being.

Wow, those cancellations hit my team pretty bad. Lamptey injured, Dias, Stones, Kane, Son and Reguilon - so I've finished up with 8 starters.

Still, 35 with Salah (c) to go doesn't look too sloppy this week.

Expect 3/4 more cancelled games over the next few weeks, might be a good idea to shift away from owning 2/3 players from the same team.

Made 30pts on my direct rival with those cancellations - simply cos he could only field 7 players with all this chaos.

This is through luck rather than skill so I shouldn’t celebrate.

But I want to - does that make me a bad person?

Not at all, was it skill when someone got zaha penalty points because Ayew scuffed the first one and zaha re took it? Most of the game involves luck

This game is about judgment and luck, with judgment the more important. Ultimately, if your judgment is sound you'll do well and if it's not, you won't. Luck is to be celebrated when you happen upon it.

People here demanding more subs for struggling to field 11 players due to bench foddering, while some players took precautions and strengthened their bench reading into the circumstances. Get over it guys and adapt. Imagine how unfair that would be for people that sacrificed 1 or 2 big hitters due to this strange season.

I had Dias and Zouma on my bench. Not exactly fodder. Not calling for more subs because that is just the way the cookie crumbles. But saying good judgment could have seen which players would not play due to Covid is really not accurate. It could just as easily ravaged Southampton or West Ham.

Easier doing that with no fires to put out in your team (which I presume was your case given you were able to strengthen bench) This is the first week I’ve needed a bench so not that big an issue

Does anyone else get an itch to make an early transfer despite the fact you can wait?
So I know what transfer I want to make this week, but with the Covid turmoil, ofc I should wait until the last minute. I wont be priced out either.
Buty damn almost like OCD, I feel I need to do the transfer now and get it done lol

Anyone else like this? I probably wont even rest easy until I do it...

I think it is OCD tbh, I didnt know much about OCD a while back and just assumed it was essentially hyper active children. But OCD is present in adults in different ways you dont expect, such as the inability to wait, to the point you feel compelled to do something even if you didnt think about the long term or disregarded it to get immediate gratification.

I have will power so I can resist the urge, I just need to ignore fantasy for a few days until closer to the deadline and forget about it, or it will drive me nuts.

Okay then. 42 + Lewis, Wilson, Salah (C). That's 11/12 playing. Always thought your bench keeper should play in the event a 4th sub is needed, as has happened in real life.

Looking at the overall rankings, one can see that having a playing bench is advantageous, no. 1 has 7 points coming on and no. 2 has 17 points coming on. Muggins here will have to make do with Mitchells 2 points and a valuable lesson learned.
