Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

The coronavirus pandemic has put paid to another top-flight fixture, with Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Fulham now confirmed as being off.

Scott Parker’s side recorded a number of positive COVID-19 tests on Tuesday and reported that a further group of players were “showing symptoms” today, resulting in a request from the Cottagers to the Premier League to postpone their Wednesday night clash with Spurs.

It wasn’t until around three and a half hours before kick-off that word started to filter through of the game’s cancellation, with the official announcement not arriving until after 15:00 GMT.

This is the second Gameweek 16 fixture to fall by the wayside, with Everton’s meeting with a coronavirus-affected Manchester City called off on Monday.

The Gameweek 11 match between Aston Villa v Newcastle was a previous casualty, with Steve Bruce’s squad decimated by illness at the time.

The Magpies’ clash with Liverpool this evening will bring the curtain down on a curtailed Gameweek 16, with kick-off at St James Park at 20:00 GMT.

No announcement has yet been made on when the outstanding fixtures will be rescheduled for, nor has there been any clue as to what the impact will be in Gameweek 17.

Fulham are due to face Burnley on Sunday, the same day that Manchester City are at Chelsea.

The ramifications for Fantasy managers could extend beyond the current Gameweek, then, and the hope will be for clear-cut information before the next FPL deadline at 16:30 GMT on Friday.

The Premier League remain confident that the 2020/21 season can continue for the time being, saying in a statement today:

With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

Given what happened in March when similar noises made before a hasty retreat, we’ll have to take those words with a pinch of salt for the time being.

    Advance rough/smooth
Rough: have Kane (c), Son, Dier
Smooth: Salah (vc up to c); Alioski 12 and Soucek 3 from the bench.
Shows needs 15 active players and none of this Brewster nonsense on the bench

Yes it’s unfair. Last season when the season got cancelled in March, it was unfair on those who wildcarded that week.

There are two approaches managers could have taken. A stronger bench and not tripling and not doubling where at all possible. This would have somewhat mitigated against the worst case scenario. Perhaps this approach would reap less points, in which case if a has not taken that approach then they need to accept that they gambled on first X1 efficiency and they lost. It involves luck, but it's their own choice. It's russian roulette and a lot of managers were happy to leave themselves exposed. It's all gone a bit FFSALT.CO.UK

Saw someone moaning about games not just going ahead: the risk is that those who tested positive have already spread it to other players/staff or that false negatives have arrived, and that they may spread it to the other team's players/staff. That is exactly how you get the league shut down, especially with such a quick turnaround between games. They will wait until the last minute because they desperately don't want a shutdown or too fixtures to be pushed back, as the Euros is looming right after.

Regardless, everyone remember to wash your hands and social distance. Masks do not give you immunity, and when vaccinated you can still spread. We'll all get through this, and the less cases we have the less there will be an impetus to lockdown. Much love to all.

Yes I know. But what’s the point of a vaccine if you then are being told to still stay inside for months/years till everyone has had it.

Not only that, they’ll probably start making you have a covid passport, so you can’t travel unless you’ve had the vaccine, etc.

Deal with any injuries or none playing bench

I've gone Wilson to Vary and pretty happy. Even though we don't know whats going ahead it makes my full squad stronger

        Like MC Hammer once said,

"You got to Pray just to make it today!"

        Also the bible says,

"You reap what you so" (AKA "you get what put into it")

So pray and prepare and you will do alright in Life and FPL but prolly don't waste a prayer on FPL. Bad Form

No such thing as a wasted prayer. I pray for my team all the time.

I just don't pray for other teams downfall.

Remember: "ask, and it shall be given to you".

I was trying to build up for GW 18, but ended up this round without Son (c), Kane(vc), Dier, KdB, Stone, Dias and DCL. I hear people talk about strong bench, but no bench can cover that.

I think games cancelled after deadline should count in that GW. If not the game is just decided by pure luck. And im out of the cup, beaten by 3 million ghost teams, because i played the game planning for future GWs. So it’s the end on fpl for me this season.

I'm down to 8 players. Those of us building for BGW18 have been hit the hardest. City and Spurs were the last two teams we wanted to be postponed.

Don’t comment here much but regularly browsed FFS for about 10 years now as I’ve gradually improved my strategies.

So for the impending blank and dgw I’ve decided to play my wildcard before the next deadline to play for the DGW, not getting entirely dgw players as some tasty games or teams only playing once.

    So I’ve gone for:

    Guaita
    Holding, Lowton, Balbuena
    Fernandes, Zaha, Salah, Soucek
    Bamford, Firmino, Kane

    Martinez, Fornals, Dier, Dallas

Can field a decent team this week (assuming games go ahead)

Plan is to free hit for the blank and field 11, revert back to the above for DGW and lose Zaha for Saka or Zhaka or Torres

Currently 3rd in my mini leagues with 956 points at 166.6k

Question - should I triple captain someone or bench boost for the DGW?

Soz for long typical droning post

      Nah dog, that's not cool.

Last year, MCI vs Watford was 7-0 zip or so

C-Sterling got destroyed because he got PEPPED.

      But I VC-KDB and hauled 19 points

That was pre-COVID. But shows why you might want to target a game.

You still ran the risk of that game being cancelled and getting a zero point captaincy. Glad it worked out for you that time but I've never done it in 11 years playing and never will. Not with UK winters being as they are and especially not now with covid.

Amongst all this uncertainty, is gw18 still best bet to free hit if I only have a couple of players?

I'm planning to bb in dgw19 - buy that will be a last minute decision! Most of that team, and the bench is already on place! Thanks

I have zero playing in gw18 so easy decision for me.

Free hit gw18, bench boost gw19 with full 15 players, hopefully (baring any issues)
