Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

The coronavirus pandemic has put paid to another top-flight fixture, with Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Fulham now confirmed as being off.

Scott Parker’s side recorded a number of positive COVID-19 tests on Tuesday and reported that a further group of players were “showing symptoms” today, resulting in a request from the Cottagers to the Premier League to postpone their Wednesday night clash with Spurs.

It wasn’t until around three and a half hours before kick-off that word started to filter through of the game’s cancellation, with the official announcement not arriving until after 15:00 GMT.

This is the second Gameweek 16 fixture to fall by the wayside, with Everton’s meeting with a coronavirus-affected Manchester City called off on Monday.

The Gameweek 11 match between Aston Villa v Newcastle was a previous casualty, with Steve Bruce’s squad decimated by illness at the time.

The Magpies’ clash with Liverpool this evening will bring the curtain down on a curtailed Gameweek 16, with kick-off at St James Park at 20:00 GMT.

No announcement has yet been made on when the outstanding fixtures will be rescheduled for, nor has there been any clue as to what the impact will be in Gameweek 17.

Fulham are due to face Burnley on Sunday, the same day that Manchester City are at Chelsea.

The ramifications for Fantasy managers could extend beyond the current Gameweek, then, and the hope will be for clear-cut information before the next FPL deadline at 16:30 GMT on Friday.

The Premier League remain confident that the 2020/21 season can continue for the time being, saying in a statement today:

With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

Given what happened in March when similar noises made before a hasty retreat, we’ll have to take those words with a pinch of salt for the time being.

I sympathise with Fulham but a club like Man City not being able to field a team is a joke

I don't blame Pep. The FA should have told them to play.

It's not about that though, it's about stopping the spread of infection with positive results coming so soon before the game, there could've been more after the game went ahead putting the other team and even more games at risk.

City didn't really know whether they'd be able to field a team as there wasn't enough time to complete another round of testing. They just got their subsequent test results today, and their training ground just reopened today. And it's not about not being able to field a team as much as it's about minimising the spread; it's rumoured that the rule regarding 14 fit players has been amended or disapplied.

Its easy to see the game week is being a huge source of frustration for many. But it's actually working out great for some and it's really helping otgers cut through the field as they have a strong bench or the fixtures postponed aren't having a major impact on their team.

Have the turn of events helped many of you?

Not sure id say helped but i feel less worse off than some
Just wish id paid the 4 pts to do DCL to bamford (done it as soon as deadline passed)
But my other 2 transfers worked out okay. KDB to Bruno and Lewis to Dallas.
Think im on 45 with standard salah left
My main rivals in my league... one has him as captain. But ill have a better week unless salah gets more than 18pts

I can't say 'helped' but I went into the week with no City (don't trust form) and ended up with 55 from 8 before the news this morning. I'll go without Kane and Son, but then again so will everyone else in my MLs, so it's really not all that bad.

Anyone who has planned bb gw19 reconsidering till later in season when we should have vaccinated millions and potentially less likely for games to be called off? Cos I am. Be a travesty to use bench boost then have a couple games off and waste the chip

I WC'd for the BB GW19 so firstly I have to FH in 18 as I literally have no players from that week. I don't think I need to BB in 19 anymore, and I don't think it'd be a waste of my playing bench what with Covid decimating teams. Think it'll be wise to have 15 playing players.

I need to free hit 18 still as have hardly any players...I have 14 playing gw19 players, only need a 2nd keeper. Just don't think I want to use bb any more

Did WC with BB 19 in mind. But all going to depend on fixture rescheduling now.
Hard to believe that football covid won't mirror to some extent the growing levels of COVID cases in the country.
Also seems inevitable to be even further disruption caused by FA cup postponements particularly where lower League clubs are due to play PL teams

Oh that's a point. I had forgotten all those people who held of their WC to plan for chips.......nightmare.

39 points vs 30 with Salah (C) and Robbo to go, so I should do yes, even if Robbo doesnt play.

Should do but as I am not using the FH in gw18, I expect to exit early anyway

With an EO of 140%, will my rank drop if Salah scores points, or am I to consider having Salah(C) as 200%?

Salah C is 200% and TC would be 300%

What's the latest thoughts on replacements for Taylor - up to 4.6. Still going to BB19 at this stage and FH18 but that could all rapidly change of course.

still looking at the BB myself but own Taylor, lamp, James and mendy who all could miss the next game

looking at bringing holding in, great fixtures despite no double, Pretty nailed as well, obviously if you don't have dallas or any West Ham coverage I'd look their first but assuming you do

Thing is, if you're free hitting 18 you need to use a transfer this week...so if no other fires Taylor out seems reasonable
