Assessing Salah’s blank as Robertson moves top of the FPL defenders’ points table

Newcastle United 0-0 Liverpool

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), Federico Fernandez (£4.7m) x3, Karl Darlow (£5.0m) x1

The final fixture of an eight-match Gameweek that refused to stick to the script ended in suitably underwhelming fashion at St James Park on Wednesday.

Liverpool failed to score for the first time in the Premier League this season as poor finishing and a dogged defensive effort from Newcastle United left the Reds, and those Fantasy managers who backed their attacking assets, frustrated.

EGYPT ME OUT OF POINTS

A second successive blank for Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) capped off a below-par week for many Fantasy Premier League bosses, with the Egyptian backed with the armband by huge swathes of the FPL community for the clash with Newcastle.

Both he and Sadio Mane (£11.9m) never really got going on Tyneside but even taking into account their listless displays, this was one of those games when the margins between double-digit haul and a three-pointer were slim.

But for the merest brush on the fingertips of Karl Darlow‘s (£5.0m) gloves, Salah would have opened the scoring and potentially the floodgates in the 33rd minute.

His second wasted big chance arrived midway through the second half, the Egyptian failing to even hit the target with this effort, but Salah has historically had a profligate side to his game and occasional frustrating afternoons come with the territory.

Mane was also denied a tap-in by a goalmouth clearance from Fabian Schar (£4.9m), while Firmino spurned three very presentable headed opportunities and ought to have continued his good festive form.

INJURY LATEST

In terms of positive news, Liverpool appeared to emerge from their Gameweek 16 clash on Tyneside relatively unscathed.

An early injury to Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), in which the left-back needed treatment, seemingly amounted to nothing, with the Scot going on to last the full 90 minutes – the 16th time in a row he has done that in the Premier League in 2020/21.

Jurgen Klopp said after the game:

As far as I know, in the moment, nobody got injured tonight, which is a very important thing. So that means we probably can go with the same squad to Southampton.

The return of Thiago Alcantara (£5.7m) as a second-half substitute was a boost to the Reds but from a Fantasy perspective, the most pertinent injury news of the evening concerned Joel Matip (£5.5m).

Any notion that the Cameroon international could offer FPL managers a reliable, cut-price route into the Liverpool backline over the coming weeks and months were dashed yet again when the injury-prone stopper succumbed to yet another fitness issue in Gameweek 15.

Klopp said after full-time on Wednesday:

The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, around about three weeks.

That would put Matip on a collision course with Double Gameweek 19, so any punt on Nathaniel Phillips (£4.0m) and Rhys Williams (£4.0m) for the home fixtures against Manchester United and Burnley is a risky one at this stage.

Even if Matip was ruled out for that double-header, the fact that the two bargain-bin defenders continue to share game-time is off-putting; it was Williams who got the nod to deputise for Matip in Gameweeks 13 and 15, and Phillips at St James Park.

GREAT SCOT

On the subject of Liverpool’s backline, Robertson produced another fine performance from left-back en route to a tidy haul.

With much focus on Ben Chilwell (£6.1m) et al this season, the Scotland international has quietly gone about his business and this latest nine-point return moved him into first place in the FPL defenders’ points standings.

But for Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.3m) poor miss from Robertson’s 67th-minute corner, the in-form full-back would have been looking at another double-digit score.

One slight concern on the clean sheet front might be the absence of Matip, with neither Williams nor Phillips looking particularly solid.

This was the first match that Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in this season when either one of those budget assets has played and it took a last-ditch block from Fabinho (£5.4m) to stop Callum Wilson (£6.5m) from extending that drought, with the Newcastle striker having brushed off Phillips all too easily to carve out an early opening.

DARLOW V DUBRAVKA

Included in the Newcastle United squad for the first time this season was goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (£4.8m), who had been sidelined for four months with a heel problem.

The Slovak will have to be content with a place among the substitutes for now, however, with Darlow producing a well-timed masterclass between the posts and earning his manager’s backing after full-time:

Karl has waited patiently for his chance because of the form of Dubravka but he’s number one at the moment because of the performances that he’s putting in.

FIVE GO DEFENDING

A solid defensive showing from Newcastle at the Etihad on Boxing Day was followed up by an even better display against Liverpool, with centre-backs Schar and Federico Fernandez (£4.7m) particularly impressing.

Fernandez proved to be a bonus point magnet whenever the Magpies kept clean sheets last season and it so proved again on Wednesday, with the stopper collecting maximum bonus along with Robertson.

The problem with targeting Newcastle’s defence in FPL is Bruce’s determination to roll out a more attacking formation in the so-called ‘easier’ games – good news for the talismanic Wilson, who continues to thrive despite the limited service and who went close to scoring against Liverpool, but less so elsewhere.

The Magpies resemble a solid outfit in a backs-to-the-wall 5-4-1 but look less so in a 4-4-2/4-2-3-1, conceding goals against the likes of Burnley, Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Brighton and Hove Albion – all at home – this season when playing without a third centre-half.

Jamaal Lascelles (£4.2m), incidentally, looks likely to miss Gameweek 17 on his long road back from a positive COVID-19 test, but he’s one for the watchlist at that ever-dwindling price.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Murphy (Almiron 67), Yedlin, Ritchie (Lewis 86), Clark, Fernandez, Schar, Hayden, M.Longstaff, Wilson, Joelinton.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Fabinho, Robertson, Jones (Wijnaldum 68), Henderson, Milner (Thiago 73), Salah (Shaqiri 90), Firmino, Mane.

My plan was to freehit in gw 18 and BB gw 19 and get rid of Steer Kdb and watkins for 3 dgw players for -4.
Should i continue with My plan?

    Martinez Steer
    Dallas Taa Coufal Bednarek Justin
    Son Kdb Salah Fernandes Soucek
    Bamford Watkins Adams

I have the same strategy but different players involved.

I'm making 1 FT for a DGW19 player I want long term this week and FH in GW18.

I will decide on whether to BB and make the other 2 transfers closer to the GW19 deadline when there is more news. It may be risky using BB in 19 if games are being cancelled. May be safer to hold the BB for GW26.

After playing the Free Hit in GW18 you will only have 1 free transfer for GW19

I'm starting to lean away from FH in 18, there just isn't enough upside and with the 2 cancellations this week and maybe more to come, there might be better weeks to use it.

Although I recognise you will have no MC so that might make it more worth it.

I'm quite happy to play G!8 with max 7 players, banking on it being a low scoring week anyway and should make up more points with a better FH later in the season

I'll leave it as late as I can, again the BB may well be better used later in the season when things are clearer.
TC is a dilema. Don't think I've ever scored well with it, Salah is the obvious choice here but he's dropping off in his points at the moment!
Again, that will be a spur of the moment thing I think lol

Don’t get why people are arguing for saving FH in GW18 cause they ‘don’t see a big haul’ Surely if the average is 30 and you get 50 with a FH that’s a good score...

True, but if you have 7 or 8 playing with Spurs, City and Everton well covered I don't see an additional 20 points coming from 3 to 4 players from the other teams.

Yeah I see. Are you suggesting people on FH are going to load up with Brighton, Sheff Utd and Newcastle players?

The use of the chip is completely team dependent, taking into consideration the few gws before and afterwards, plus the dgw strategy. His point stands as fact. If YOUR team looks as if it could benefit by 20 odd points on that week, the chip is obviously worthwhile.

Especially if your team is primed for DGW19 etc.

I am not suggesting people load up their teams with Brighton, Sheffield and Newcastle players. All I am saying is that if you have 3 to 5 heavy hitters from the top teams you have covered most of the points. How many times three players from the same team haul? KDB, Dias, DCL, Son, Kane should contribute majority of your points that GW. If you play your transfers well and get an Arsenal/ Sheffield/ Newcastle mid/ def you have covered the odd clean sheet too. 7 or 8 players with this combination are enough not to use FH for those additional 6 to 8 points you might get from the rest.

Only if the player you bring in covers that -4 and still produces in the positive. Don't get them to make up the numbers. For example Dias for a -4 might work. Saiss for a -4 might not.

That’s a perfectly reasonable strategy. But it doesn’t change what he said lol. It’s not a one size fits all approach.

So you ‘cover’ BGW18, and score 5 points less than the average FH side, with just 7/8 players.

What are you going to do with DGW19? Because the FH sides are fully loaded up with dgw assets. Are you going to FH? Do you really want the BGW18 assets post-GW19? So many more factors to consider. There’s no optimal approach for everyone.

"It’s not a one size fits all approach" is exactly what I am hinting at.

"What are you going to do with DGW19": With my 2 FTs I will have 8 for DGW with Kane, Son and Martinez being my SGW players (that might change too is Spurs DGW is announced).

I did. But if you expect Saka, Wilson or Neto to contribute to the haul then FH makes sense. If you already have all the big hitters in your team then I believe you save FH for future usage.

Very few will have ‘all’ the big hitters in their team imo. I understand what you’re saying, I’m at a crossroads myself with what to do. But no doubt FH teams could do very well in gw18/19.

My major concern right now is injuries/ postponements. Do not want a situation where I use my FH in an already curtailed GW and two of the games get postponed. i rather use it in a DGW to get 15 possible starters spread across at least 10 to 11 teams.

You have to look at GW18 and 19 togheter. The FH gives you extra fixtures in both gameweeks. That said I’m not saying saving the FH isn’t a viable strategy too

Anyone else still fuming about yesterday? As someone with Dias, Son, Kane and Dier m, I was absolutely destroyed this week.

Understand there is not much FPL can do as it’s the chaos created by the PL but it no longer feels like an even playing field. Dealt with postponements before but never seen two key matches drop out the way they did. The gloating I saw from people without Son and Kane was shameless and they can just go get them for the doubles, too. Argh.

I felt similar injustice (Stones, Ederson, KDB, Son and Dier here).

Sitting 3rd in my main ML, those players playing would almost certainly put me top for New Year.

Hard to know what transfers to do now or what strategy to take, as things can change just a few hours before kick off it seems.

Will have to plan on a slightly stronger bench than normal on FH.

Good point, if I were to save the FH in 18 I’d have a lot less double fixtures in 19 (or on a -12)

Before this latest gameweek happened - it was not just the FH week itself. It was having to lose KDB/Son/Kane etc.. to load up on DGWers when Spurs/City had great fixtures coming up in the meantime.

Then they all ended up blanking and us who were building for 18 ended up with Brewster/ Mitchell/nobody playing instead.

I feel your strategy has already won, no matter what you do now.

I still have kdb and son and off my bench we’re Brewster and Mitchell!! Planning on losing kdb and Brewster to soucek and Vardy this week and then upgrade Mitchell before 19. Only problem is if fixtures change and reluctant to BB if there’s a chance of more late call offs

But isn’t there usually a double followed quickly by a blank followed by a double at the end of the season? Every other season it’s the consensus to use the FH in that blank to attack two double gameweeks rather than one.

They won’t be as perfectly in sync though (ie all who blank in 18 have a double in 19) so should make it easier to plan for with wildcard

    6. Boywiththesoupdragontattoo

A lot depends on the shape of your team. I’d currently have one player in BGW18 (yes I was very lucky this week as a result) so no matter what future blanks look like, I doubt I’ll have a better opportunity to use it.

If you had 7/8 playing in GW18 already then I get the dilemma and would be tempted to cover it just on transfers.

Personally I don’t like using the FH for doubles, but that might just be because I did it last year and ended up scoring less than my non FH team.

    Can’t decide on FH 18 or 19...
Currently have 6 players in 18, so could have 8 for free
For 19 I have 8, but missing the better DGW ers
Was going to TC Salah, but not sure now as well

Sounds like you should go for no chip in 18 if you already have 6 players. Not great fixtures that week & only half the teams to pick from... you'll do fine with 8 players I think. Then you'll have an extra chip for later in the season where there's gunna be lots of DGW's by the looks of things

I think that's where I'm going, especally if Burnley v Fulham is off, I just do Lowton to Holding and go with 7 maybe 8 in week 18.

    Son or Kane cpt?

This gw I captained Kane vs Fulham, felt like a better option, but this time i think it might be Son. Leeds an attacking team etc.
But Kane has them pens on him... tough call.

Is anyone still using FH and then TC for GWs 18/19?

    1. Sif
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

This is what I'm now thinking given the Covid situation and other teams fixtures to be moved got KDB for example who's now looking at a DGW.
Don't want to dramatically alter my team, would require getting a second keeper for example.
So thinking get out 11 DGW players plus the TC.

That leaves 2nd wild card to properly arrange a DGW team later in the season. Wildcard into BB is the best way as it effects your team less in the weeks leading up.

      1. boombaba
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah I agree with WC later in season with BB.
I am a still keen to FH gw18 and TC salah
Not sure how good TC options will be later in season and potentially with more fixture congestion with the season playing catch-up and champs league returning to latter stages where best players will be needed
Meaning a DGW for salah or someone else may result in 1 game anyway

You should use your transfer before using the free hit, right? That way you don’t lose your transfer to plan for the double?

And another question: can you use free transfers on the gw18 when also doing the BB (for gw19?)

Only the usual free transfers. If you use the FH chip you will go back to the GW17 team when you enter GW19.

FH in GW 18 would be 3 x MC which I have already, then a combo of Arsenal, Newcastle, Tottenham and Villa, of which I only have Grealish.

That doesn't seem like enough like enough upside when I could get 7 or 8 out anyway and we're getting more DGWs in the future including Tottenham v Fulham and Man U at Burnley and who knows, maybe more.

        Currently have

        Martinez
        Grealish
        KDB
        Kane
        (Brewster)
        (Mitchell)

For GW18 and 3FT to use before then. Thinking of just getting a City defender or two and riding it out with that.

Just watched the scoutcast. Really interesting point raised about making your VC someone in an early game (for example DCL this week) to avoid being caught out if your captain is due to play in a game that is later postponed. I think that’s a sensible suggestion.
