Seven-time top 10k finisher Zøphar on Rashford, Leeds, Grealish and disappointment

The FPL manager with six top 5k overall ranks to his name, Zøphar, looks at some statistical trends from the last four Gameweeks.

Gameweek 16 is finally over and for many it didn’t even start, with the postponement of Everton v Manchester City shortly after the Fantasy Premier League deadline passed and then a similar fate befalling the Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham game.

Rather than lament about how these absences affected our squads, I thought I would rather look forward and discuss some trends I noticed over the last few Gameweeks.

Shot-Shy Grealish

Dealing with disappointment

Gameweek 16 was a nightmare for many managers, including myself. Many of us, especially those with a strategy not to Free Hit in Gameweek 18, suffered six-to-seven absences with the last-minute postponements, in addition to injuries and rotation.

It can be tough for us who take pleasure in planning and obsessing over the best strategy and picks, only to have a fixture called off a few hours before the game. All of those hours spent on listening to podcasts, poring over statistics and discussing on message boards can feel like a waste but we can only make decisions based on the information available and this is no ordinary season. Things are likely to get worse before they get better and it’s important that we don’t let this get us down. It’s the FPL process and community interaction I enjoy as much as the actual matches themselves and I don’t plan to change that anytime soon.

Adversity usually presents opportunity and these postponed games are likely to present more double and even triple Gameweeks in the future. Emotional investment in FPL needs to be low in difficult times like these. The game is meant to serve as a distraction from troubled times and if you are only letting it add to your grief, you’re doing it wrong. We must remember that the health and safety of players and staff is paramount and the Premier League would only call off fixtures if there was no other possible course of action.

As my fellow Pro Pundit and podcast co-host Lateriser said in his last piece: “It’s just a game”. There is no point worrying about things we cannot control or cannot foresee. Let’s enjoy watching sport while we can, if these postponements etc do not fall our way, we can just shrug our shoulders and move on.

Keep your chin up. Better times are coming. Take care of yourself and those around you, physically and mentally.

Wishing you all a happy new year.

    BB19 is target. Pick one:

    Taylor / Grealish / Son / Martial

    A) Son + Taylor --- Rashford + Coufal (-4)

    B) Taylor + Grealish + Martial --- Coufal + Rashford + Antonio (-8)

    C) Taylor + Grealish --- Coufal + Barnes

If you're confident of getting rid of KDB do it!
You seem to have some other big hitters so you should be fine with Neto.

    GW16 - 1 point

The frustration for fpl and indeed real clubs is that the premier league move at a snails pace to release information for rescheduled matches. You'd think it would be alot easier and quicker as they don't have to account for tens of thousands of fans attending games + police + transport considerations. However, it seems that it makes no difference.

      Rough
(Dias, Stones, DCL, Son, Kane, Dier)

      Smooth
Cresswell, Ayling, soucek for 15 bench points.

small ref arrow after 8 successive greens. Can't complain as it could have been so much worse

Smooth, but more jammy luck than anything else. I haven't owned Son, nor Man City players.

Sold Struijk and KDB for Robertson and Raphinha.

Blue - yellow - and whites triumvirate DBR got me 28 points. Fernandes got the assist, and got Chilwell autosub 5 points for Coufal.

Salah(C) blanked, Kane didn't play, but 64 points, 10th green arrow in a row, and just broke into the 100k, so I am thrilled.

I think the template this week is going to be:

Rough: City/Spurs captain and City/Spurs vice captain

Smooth: a bench that actually played.

For me it was smooth. Bench went three deep. Only 50 points, but still a green arrow.

ROUGH: 31 Points from 7. 5 postponed and 1 rested and 1 point from Taylor. In total, I had 4 from the city/everton game / Coufal / Son (C) / Taylor.
SMOOTH: Fortunate to have Bruno as Vice to get me 12 in the end.

Rough: Salah captain, Coufal benched for West Ham CS, Kyle Walker getting COVID-19 (get well soon, fella), and no Son or DCL.

Smooth: Andrew Robertson and Alex McCarthy. Bamford and Bruno keep delivering.

Rough - missing the deadline to adjust the team for the second GW in a row, #dopeycasual
Smooth - still had Fernandez(c), + Dallas,12 came off the bench for Son. Solid green arrow. #jammyb45tard

Though this season Ive actually noticed its a theme, red arrows when I watch the games, stidy the forums, & do early transfers ; big green when I do absolutely nothing.

Smooth: 62 points, bought Dallas, correctly predicted spurs and city would be off so had no players from them

Rough: Bruno (c) fail, rival got jammy alioski points from the bench

    13. Deulofail
      • 8 Years

      Smooth:

Third gameweek owning Saka. An assist and clean sheet to add to the goal, assist and 3 bonus last week. Looking like a good buy.

I missed the deadline, but the previous GW I'd bought TAA instead of Roberston, and as I'm writing this, I'm just finding out that Roberstson outscored TAA. I thought he didn't show up. Haha okay then, it's a rough.

I started McCarthy over Martinez for an extra 6 points and got 10 players out, albeit 1s and 2s from Mitchell, Lewis, Grealish, Brewster and Martial. Captained Son (-), but vice was Fernandes (6), which was a minor win in the end.

      Rough:

Buying Son and Stones last GW (-8 for all three transfers) hasn't worked out, with them both missing this GW.

But 49 pts this week takes me from 2.9m to 2.7m. Whoopteedoo

Rough: pretty much everything, including punting on Grealish to Lookman to fund Bruno.

Rough: Brought in Kane and Son for a hit

Smooth: Still got 65 points and now in the Top 100k for the first time this season (131k - > 75k)
Also brought in Raphinha as a part of the hit
Entire defense returned with Robbo + Chilwell + Creswell + Dallas

Rough - Maddison, Coufal and Spurs no show. Ridiculous decision to start Johnstone over Fabianski.

Smooth - Great start to wildcard. 60 points from 10 players. Highest GW rank of the season. Rank rise of around 450k. Lovely Leeds triple up including Alioski off the bench.

Smooth: 53pts, Dallas off the bench to replace Dier.

Rough: Salah (C) blank. Adams and risky recent WC for DGW19 punt Antonio 1 pointers. Coufal missed out on WHU CS

Up to 276k, five green arrows in a row. Hoping COVID-19 doesn’t scupper my GW18 Free Hit / DGW19 Bench Boost plans!!

      Rough
only 7 starters + 1 cameo, Cancelo, Dias, Kane Son, + Subs Lookman & Lamptey out, Lewis 3rd sub coming in clutch with 1pt (but missing out on unexpected clean sheet) also Salah(c) fail

      Smooth
my only transfer this week was Wellbeck (another no show) to Bamford, him along with Dallas helping me to 40pts and ensuring i qualified for the cup 🙂

All rough: Salah cap, KDB, DCL, Stones, Son, Zouma, Coufal not playing, Taylor injured 1 pointer - and took a hit, net 30 points and less than 100k away from the lowest cup qualifiers for this week 🙁

    21. Rover

After toying around with selling KdB and DCL, I ended up making a 3rd defensive transfer in a row (last week I sold Chilwell for Matip):

      Sold Matip. Bought Mee.
A +15 point swing and now a fixture in the BGW too.

Also the Raphinha + Bamford combo has now fetched 51 points in 5 GWs.

Only 8 starters including Taylor, and still a total of 55 points and a rank rise of 300k (from 1.66m to 1.35m)

Rough. My defenders were Dias, Stones, Dier, Coufal and Jamal Lewis (my bad) who gave the only def return, 1 pt. I also had Kane and KdB not starting with also Podence (1 pt) for gw 18. Total 28 pts and gw rank over 6 million.

So 8 players not even starting (and yes, I am to blame owning Lewis but had I not sold Targett for him to get cash, it wouldn't have made more than 1pt difference.) Strategy to manage gw 18 without FH has failed.

i have a rough with the smooth. Both are in my team!
Rough: I used my first WC and so captained kane and vice-catained Vardy plus brought in Stones
Smooth: I brought in Robertson, Dallas and Raphina for KWP, White and KDB (needs to fund the transfers).
Finished with 63 points this week and won my knockout cash cup by one point

      Smooth: 63pts

Brought in Johnstone for Forster and played him over Martinez. None of my bench of Coufal Lamptey and Look man played. Reece James Kane and DCL also non starters and Salah captain blank. Triple Leeds of Dallas Raphinha and Bamford plus Robertson saved my GW. 51 points from 8 players

Smooth; Solid 61 points, got a full XI out, moved back up to 348k, just ahead of where I was back in GW12. Wildcard recruit Alioski returning 12 points, Bruno(c), McCarthy, KWP, Bamford, and four three pointers from Salah, Mane, Soucek and Romeu.

Rough; Taylor subbing off denying me a full house at the back. Kane and DCL no shows.

      An OK 48

Smooth - Took Chilwell and James out a couple of weeks ago for Dallas and Robbo who returned 21 points between them. Bruno and Bamford keep doing bits. After a dreadful start 4 green arrows in a row and touching the dizzying heights of the top 1m, it might be time to start revising my top 10k ambitions. Gap in ML has closed over the last few weeks quite a bit.

Rough - Same as everyone with the cancellations plus Coufal being rested. Salah captain blank after missing some decent chances and picked the wrong keeper again.

Smooth, qualified for cup 4th time in 4 seasons (although only made it past round 1 once). Dallas returns again, he is proving to be a gem.

      Maybe too late!
      But here goes,
Smooth, my players getting an average of 6.4 each.
Rough, the fact I only had 5 players scoring points in my team.
Dropping out of my 11, dier, cancelo, zouma, son, kane, dcl.
Subs in, lampty, anguissa, burke for combined zero.
      32 all in from 5.
Salt in the wound, moved early to get taylor in before his price rise for lampty, and he does his hammy within 10 mins.

Gw 18 I'm planning on using FH.
If before using FH I use my free transfer in gw18 (shipping Grealish for Raphinha), does the free transfer happen or does the FH cancel it out and my gw19 team will still have Grealish?

    Hope that makes sense.

I have 2 FT too, but I’m not sure I want to FH in GW18.

With only 5 games, and not really very exciting ones at that, I might just bumble on with 8 or 9 players.

Might save my FH for later on as there’s surely going to be another DGW the way COVID-19 is going.

Antonio back in contention to start? Is it currently a fitness issue or has Haller nailed the spot?

Haller is just a place holder for Antonio until he can get fit but it’s a huge If, I would expect him to start the next game but get 60 mins max, if he makes it through that then he’ll be first choice but he was in this same situation a few weeks ago and broke down after 45 mins

Moyes doesn't rate Haller. He's playing him out of necessity as he needs a target man.

Antonio is their no.1 attacker, but his minutes may be managed as he can be injury prone.

    Reporting from last article...

I have Taylor and James and the rest of my defence is Robbo, Stones & Coufal - I have 1 free transfer and 0 ITB and plan to free hit in 18 and possibly bench boost in 19

    a) Taylor to a 4.5m (Alioski, Ayling, Holding)
    b) James to anyone up to 5.2m (Bednarek, Dallas, Bellerin, Justin)
    c) Both out for a hit aqnd bring in 2 of the above

I'd wait until tomorrow in case there are any announcements. It's pure guess work at this stage.

Yes, the spoon feeding has reached critical levels and its ruining FPL. They should post articles about general strategy, not spoon feed actual picks.

How about Kane as a 1 week punt? Plan to FH18 and get transfers for DGW19, possibly BB19

    Martinez
    Mitchell, Dallas, Cresswell
    Bruno, KdB, Salah, Son, Raphinia
    Bamford, DCL

    4.0, Watkins, Matip, Taylor
    2FT, 0.4 ITB

    A - KdB, Watkins -> Barnes, Kane
B - KdB, Watkins, Matip -> Barnes, Kane, Justin (-4)

I think getting rid of Matip is the greater need. Chance of Taylor returning in DGW19. Scuttlebutt of Utd and Spurs getting an extra game either 18 or 19 so as to remove backlog pressure. Utd keen, reportedly, to play Burnley because it - and no offence to the lads - would not be more than a routine game, able to play James, de Beek, Cavani and not worry about Rashers or Martial Law getting knackered.

Most likely need to sort out Taylor and Cancelo (rumours he has covid)

I'm currently thinking Stephens (SOU) for Taylor. He has DGW, covers SOU CS and Vestergaard should be out until after DGW.

Not sure of a DGW replacement for Cancelo - 5.6 budget

Any thoughts on the above. Thanks

    1FT 0.1itb

    Taylor* Robbo Cancelo*
    Son Bruno Salah Raphinha

If you can afford a FT to sell Stephens after Veste comes back then it's fine. Would just spend 0.2 more to get KWP or Bednarek.

        • 5 Years

I only have 4.6 to spend on a replacement. He will probably stay on the bench after DGW so no need to transfer him out until next WC or my def is struggling with injury/covid

Hi guys, currently planning towards a GW19 bench boost. Which option do you prefer?
A: TAA (Extra hit in GW19)
B: Justin (No hit in GW19)
C: Chilwell (No hit in GW19)
