Maddison makes a late case for Double Gameweek 19 as clean sheets elude Leicester

Newcastle United 1-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Andy Carroll (£5.2m) | James Maddison (£7.1m), Youri Tielemans (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Jamie Vardy (£10.2m), Marc Albrighton (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Carroll x3, Maddison x2, Tielemans x1

A late Andy Carroll (£5.2m) goal for Newcastle couldn’t deny Leicester a well-deserved win, but it did spoil the Sundays of Fantasy managers the world over.

The striker’s 81st-minute consolation denied FPL’s most-owned defender, James Justin (£5.0m and 25.4%), clean sheet points and potential maximum bonus.

In fact, Justin’s owners effectively lost eight points in 30 harrowing seconds as their man was also booked just before Carroll scored.

Leicester Fiesta

Not that it was all bad news for those with Foxes in their squads, with the 27.8%-owned Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) producing a third assist in as many starts when he set up James Maddison‘s (£7.1m) opener.

That makes it eight assists for the striker this season – his best-ever return was 12 in the 2014/15 campaign – which has helped to paper over some recent cracks as he’s scored just the one goal in five Gameweeks now.

Maddison, meanwhile, made it a second straight attacking return, and five from his last six starts.

His season has been compromised by injury and inconsistency, with an ongoing knee issue having to be managed game by game, as Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed:

James, I think you probably saw in the Manchester United game, he wasn’t quite 100 per cent but he was pushing himself through. Again, because of the timeline of the games, he couldn’t be involved (in Gameweek 16). He still had the soreness after the game.

Unless he features in the FA Cup, the England international will have a decent rest as Leicester don’t have a Gameweek 18 fixture, which should boost his chances of featuring heavily in the team’s Double Gameweek 19.

But as Youri Tielemans‘ (£6.4m) winning strike demonstrated, the goals have been shared out among the side’s midfielders this season.

That’s made it hard for Fantasy managers to rely on a specific player for consistent returns, although Maddison is starting to build up a strong case – and momentum.

Back Line Blues

Carroll’s strike meant a third straight match without a clean sheet for a team just one point off top spot, but decidedly mid-table when it comes to goals conceded (21).

The Foxes’ total of two clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks has also been trumped by 12 other clubs.

Justin’s relatively cheap price has kept his sizeable fan base onside thus far, but two of his three attacking returns came in the first two matches of the season and the last one was back in Gameweek 12.

Leicester’s immediate fixtures – Southampton, Chelsea and Leeds (all at home) and Everton away – aren’t exactly the stuff of nailed-on clean sheets, although the eight-game run that follows offers better defensive prospects.

And the return from injury of Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m), who played 11 minutes at St James’ Park, could also add to the side’s stability at the back.

Chips Anyone?

Stability and Newcastle rarely hit it off, even if a Gameweek 16 nil-niller with Liverpool showed a certain defensive resilience and confirmed the continued excellence of keeper Karl Darlow (£5.0m).

The Magpies do have a Gameweek 18 fixture, however, and it’s against Sheffield United.

That could attract interest from those managers employing their Free Hit chip, with Darlow or a defender a decent option for the trip to the league’s least potent attack.

The more adventurous might also consider Callum Wilson (£6.5m) as an option – the Blades, after all, are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Admittedly, the forward has scored just the once in his last five starts and had neither a shot, nor created a single chance, against Leicester.

But Steve Bruce has approached matches against the Premier League also-rans differently of late and we are likely to see a more attacking set-up at Bramall Lane, with a move away from a conservative back five a strong possibility based on the Newcastle head coach’s previous tactical tweaks in the more ‘winnable’ games.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Darlow; Yedlin (Carroll 79), Fernandez, Schar, Clark, Ritchie; S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Almiron (Murphy 64); Joelinton (Shelvey 65), Wilson.

Leicester City XI (4-3-2-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne; Ndidi, Tielemans, Albrighton; Maddison (Soyuncu 79), Barnes; Vardy.

Sterling must be at risk based on performance.

Wait on the cup games to see. I have a feeling Foden is the differential to have on FH though. Pep persists with players that play well.

Mahrez started in the game following his hat-trick. He only got dropped once he played that dismal game vs United.

I'm not sure I agree with all of this. I don't know whether I believe managers drop players after one bad performance.

I might be wrong, but I think they look at performances over a longer period, plus fitness, attitude in training, tactical adjustments in specific games etc.

This is perhaps why it's so difficult to predict rotation (especially at City). Many of these factors are hidden from view for almost all fans.

I never said that they drop players after one bad performance.

I'm saying that "Pep persists with players that play well." Therefore I feel that Foden is a pretty safe pick on current form.

Lads, would you please help me out here?

    McCarthy / Steer
    Robertson / Dias / Cresswell / Saïss / Dallas
    Salah / Bruno / Son / Grealish / Soucek
    DCL / Watkins / Bamford

DCL to Wilson, Steer to Martinez for a hit? This would give me 8 playing players for GW18, and good options for a bench boost on GW19. Sounds reasonable?

Even if i have 8 blanks with a good core wildcard feels so tempting.

    Blank GW18

    De Gea (Martinez)

    Dias, Cancelo, Bissaka, (Dallas, Coufal)

    KDB, Son, Bruno, Grealish, Saka

    Watkins, Lacazette (Bamford)

    1,3 itb

19 DGW i will transfer Son and Lacazette to Salah and Antonio/Adams.
Then i will have 14 DGW players and hit the BB.

    Looks quite tasty?

If not, then no. Basically depends how you use FH in future. Given all the potential of mass fixture cancellations etc, I think it could be very handy to hold on to.

Last week I only fielded 6 and had a little drop but still did ok. Happy to still have chips just in case.

I think he will play up top with Martial on the wing or rested.

Cavani would of been rested already, he's proved he gives utd something different up top. Ole recently said Cavani is more than a bench player and will be used more.

I think he's a good differential, as will always get a goal or two.

My only concern is if he picks up an injury.

Buying Lacazette is risky. Coming from someone who's owned Gabriel, Bellerin, Holding, Auba and Saka twice this season. I wouldn't be buying him, and would also avoid on a FH, especially with so many other good options from available teams this GW, and other cheap, cheap players at Arsenal. He could score big if/when he starts, and he probably will this gameweek, but it's far from certain, and he's certainly not nailed in general either.

What other good FW options do you see - Wilson is Meh, Martial is just as iffy, Aguero has played 7 minutes...

You'd almost go for a 4-5-1 with only Kane up top.

Exactly what I was thinking, I cant see past Lacazzete upside for FH

Yeah, it's either Laca or Martial - both upside chasing.

I'm also considering Mahrez - again, a punt.

The rest need to be solid, nailed.

Nothing wrong with a 4-5-1. Personally would be happy with Martial. Aguero's scored more than 7 mins, and he wasn't needed in the game. I'd be tempted to run with him longer-term, but yeah, probably avoid on the FH. There's also Kane.

Is it not worth mentioning where you are in overall/ML league when assessing a team?

eg "should I bring in Sterling" should be caveated with your overall/ML position.

I do find it weird that this often goes without mention. Differentials to catch up, template to stay in the mixer.

Anyway, (for real) should I bring in Antonio*

    *I am having a nightmare

Why? There would be way too many posts for me to reply saying 'it's irrelevant if you're looking to get the most points as possible' to.

ok, fair enough, you just see amazing teams saying rate my team and it has all the mega haulers and you check and they are in 4 millionth, they have been reactive rather than proactive and just followed the obvious choices (based often on advice on here) a week too late

I'd still give that person the same advice as someone in top 10k. Though it would likely be the wrong advice for both.

Proactivity has absolutely nothing to do with your current rank. You can proactively look for ways to up your score in upcoming weeks, rather than react to who's scoring each week or who's being bought. Seems you're looking for irrelevant info to bias your advice rather than treating the team in isolation, which I believe would be the best method. Up until, maybe, arguably, the last GW or two or three, depending on the circumstances and goals of the individual. But then you'll still be less likely to score more if your goal isn't simply to score as many points as possible. In theory.... because variability means you are subject to the whims of the FPL Gods.

I dont think so at this stage, only halfway through season. No one in your mini leagues will have an identical team, you will just have to rely on your combination of players to be the 'differential' that allows you to climb up ranks. Focussing on bringing in differential players to make great leaps up the ranks could well lead to ignoring the best picks who are rightly more popular.

Just keep picking the players who you think are best given form, fixtures underlying stats and eye test. Ignore what other people are doing in your leagues.

As the others said, it doesn't matter at all.

In my worst FPL season, I had a bad start and then thought it was necessary to pick a host of differentials to 'catch up'. Safe to say, the season went downhill from there 🙁

Pick the best players you think will score well and don't give a fudge about other teams at this stage

    A) Robbo, Grealish, DCL
    B) Dallas, KDB, Bamford (-8)

have Forster as sub keeper and was planning a hit to move to a playing keeper for BB in 19 - McCarthy got COVID a week too soon.

Would be horribly jammy to get use of him for the DGW BB

With just Salah this week I hope it's a 1-1 draw with Thiago and Ings goal. Give me a reason to bring you in, Ings!

Why not a Salah goal then?

Won't make much of a difference to your rank, but will look nicer having more points in the side 🙂

I think as Salah owners but none captainers we should still be hoping for him to score an own goal, miss a pen and get two yellows. Will then see a tiny little green arrow.

      I'd wait.

Any price changes won't stay with you once the GW is over anyway, and I can't see how people can't make an excellent FH side as you can have at least 2 x 3.9 on the bench, so can really put some cash into the starting XI anyway.

The signs around the country are not good at all. Feel lockdown could be hours or days away (and could easily include elite sports)

Quick question; just thinking if I do play my FH now and the GW18 gets cancelled, is it lIkely that it will restart at GW18 again and I’ll still be on FH?

Unlikely, if there's another cancellation season will be restarted with GW 18+ just like last year, so any chips played in GW18 will be wasted.
