Maddison makes a late case for Double Gameweek 19 as clean sheets elude Leicester

Newcastle United 1-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Andy Carroll (£5.2m) | James Maddison (£7.1m), Youri Tielemans (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Jamie Vardy (£10.2m), Marc Albrighton (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Carroll x3, Maddison x2, Tielemans x1

A late Andy Carroll (£5.2m) goal for Newcastle couldn’t deny Leicester a well-deserved win, but it did spoil the Sundays of Fantasy managers the world over.

The striker’s 81st-minute consolation denied FPL’s most-owned defender, James Justin (£5.0m and 25.4%), clean sheet points and potential maximum bonus.

In fact, Justin’s owners effectively lost eight points in 30 harrowing seconds as their man was also booked just before Carroll scored.

Leicester Fiesta

Not that it was all bad news for those with Foxes in their squads, with the 27.8%-owned Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) producing a third assist in as many starts when he set up James Maddison‘s (£7.1m) opener.

That makes it eight assists for the striker this season – his best-ever return was 12 in the 2014/15 campaign – which has helped to paper over some recent cracks as he’s scored just the one goal in five Gameweeks now.

Maddison, meanwhile, made it a second straight attacking return, and five from his last six starts.

His season has been compromised by injury and inconsistency, with an ongoing knee issue having to be managed game by game, as Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed:

James, I think you probably saw in the Manchester United game, he wasn’t quite 100 per cent but he was pushing himself through. Again, because of the timeline of the games, he couldn’t be involved (in Gameweek 16). He still had the soreness after the game.

Unless he features in the FA Cup, the England international will have a decent rest as Leicester don’t have a Gameweek 18 fixture, which should boost his chances of featuring heavily in the team’s Double Gameweek 19.

But as Youri Tielemans‘ (£6.4m) winning strike demonstrated, the goals have been shared out among the side’s midfielders this season.

That’s made it hard for Fantasy managers to rely on a specific player for consistent returns, although Maddison is starting to build up a strong case – and momentum.

Back Line Blues

Carroll’s strike meant a third straight match without a clean sheet for a team just one point off top spot, but decidedly mid-table when it comes to goals conceded (21).

The Foxes’ total of two clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks has also been trumped by 12 other clubs.

Justin’s relatively cheap price has kept his sizeable fan base onside thus far, but two of his three attacking returns came in the first two matches of the season and the last one was back in Gameweek 12.

Leicester’s immediate fixtures – Southampton, Chelsea and Leeds (all at home) and Everton away – aren’t exactly the stuff of nailed-on clean sheets, although the eight-game run that follows offers better defensive prospects.

And the return from injury of Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m), who played 11 minutes at St James’ Park, could also add to the side’s stability at the back.

Chips Anyone?

Stability and Newcastle rarely hit it off, even if a Gameweek 16 nil-niller with Liverpool showed a certain defensive resilience and confirmed the continued excellence of keeper Karl Darlow (£5.0m).

The Magpies do have a Gameweek 18 fixture, however, and it’s against Sheffield United.

That could attract interest from those managers employing their Free Hit chip, with Darlow or a defender a decent option for the trip to the league’s least potent attack.

The more adventurous might also consider Callum Wilson (£6.5m) as an option – the Blades, after all, are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Admittedly, the forward has scored just the once in his last five starts and had neither a shot, nor created a single chance, against Leicester.

But Steve Bruce has approached matches against the Premier League also-rans differently of late and we are likely to see a more attacking set-up at Bramall Lane, with a move away from a conservative back five a strong possibility based on the Newcastle head coach’s previous tactical tweaks in the more ‘winnable’ games.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Darlow; Yedlin (Carroll 79), Fernandez, Schar, Clark, Ritchie; S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Almiron (Murphy 64); Joelinton (Shelvey 65), Wilson.

Leicester City XI (4-3-2-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne; Ndidi, Tielemans, Albrighton; Maddison (Soyuncu 79), Barnes; Vardy.

I'm ranked at 1.2m and feel it is a little pointless for me to include son and kane on free hit....

Their ownership is so high that I may as well look for lower owned alternatives such as Rashford lacasette and maybe even pogba

Also considering syerling captain as differential

Is this the right approach for someone at my rank to take? Thanks

No you should get Son and Kane as they're more likely to get points.

I’d say it’s too early to do such “sacrifices” unless you are totally convinced that the players you are selecting are better choices. If you think Kane & Son are good for next GW then just get them I’d say.

This absolutely. People get too carried away by the chasing thing. I would only take risks in the final 6-8 GWs if I am still a longway adrift.

Or not even then. People are unpredictable, opponents in mini-leagues can do very odd things with no pressure on them at all. Trying to second guess others teams to get an edge can backfire beautifully.

Of course if you are a couple hundred points adrift with a few games left and want to win it all, maverick moves may be required.

At this point in the season the best way to chase is generally to play sensibly and just go for who you think scores most. The template tends to be template for a reason. Let others go for crazy punts and see them fall behind you.

You have to cover 200 points ? Try doing that 10 points a gameweek rather than hoping for a huge differential success in one week.

On FH sureely it would make more sense to have both and then take a punt on a captain that will be low owned (Sterling, Laca etc)

You are probably c150pt off top10k with 21 gws to go - no need to panic

I actually don’t understand the hate towards early wildcards. I did mine in GW17 with the “view” to save the FH in GW18 and BB in GW19 (2 FT will help) and don’t regret it a bit (moved from 68k to 13k but Salah can destroy that tonight).

It’s not like us early wildcarders will have to sit with our 15 players for the rest of the season - we can still navigate with our free transfers & plan properly.. We also keep our FH for the future blank.

There is no "right" way thin this game. I think it's best to do what suits your team. I am also looking to play my WC this GW with a view to set up my team with City players for their run in and avoid multiple hits while also saving the FH chip.

You are absolutely right. I got criticized on playing the wildcard last GW & I see a lot of people have “fear” of doing so just because the general thoughts are that wildcards have to be saved (don’t understand why)

Good luck with your decision, & hopefully you will hit a great WC team!

Have been playing 3-5-2 all season.

At first it hurt because I missed the DCL train but as it's slowly ground to a halt things are looking much better. For me it's the best formation this year.

Value in midfield in likes of Soucek, Saka and Smith Rowe makes it more complicated as no equivilant value in forwards, but does mean you don't necessarily need to decide between the two. You can have it all and have decent bench option if needed.

I don't have stats to back it up, but I think this happens every season - we see less clean sheets at the start of the season and then the number grows as the season goes on, especially around congested schedules. I think it's because of attackers getting more tired with more minutes in their legs, while tiredness affects the defensive players less. Also probably the way a team plays getting more predictable (with more data available after more games played) helps the coaches of the opposing team to nullify them.

    For DGW19 which is best?

    A. Kane > Vardy
    B. Son & Robertson > KDB & Stones (-4)
    C. Robertson, Son & Kane > Cancelo, KDB & Vardy(-8)

I know people say risky selling spurs but city have an extra fixture and two really good ones at that plus the fact spurs play Liverpool and Chelsea two of the next year GWs after this.

That's tricky, lots of money tied up in different places and I guess relatively low team value. Only easy route I see is losing Kane and a mid. I'd ideally lose Martial.

        KDB Bruno Son Grealish Saka

        Martial Bamford

Yes I think anything above 10 points is a decent return. Past 15 points its a great return.

10 points from 8 games is not a decent return mate, unless you're playing 4 Brewsters 🙂

30-ish points is fair return, 20 is the absolute minumum for me from 4 players with 2 games each

If they all start both games, you'd get 16 just from appearance points. Even one goal or CS should get you to at least 20.

following posts about this as considering salah to KDB -but surely KDB gets more points than salah over GW18 and 19 as has 3 games ? Or is the issue that KDB only play 2?!

It depends on how easy it is for you to get him back.
I sold him for 12.4 last GW but I have a plan to buy him back in 19 even if it was for 12.6 (he could possibly drop this week)

Could well see Salah drop and KDB rise would mitigate as will be a lot doing Salah to KDB. I think having KDB gw18 outweighs any value loss.

Who is more essential for DGW19, Salah or KDB?

    Only have 7 players in BGW18 A or B?

    A play FH

    B Salah > KDB & Zouma > city/United defender Gives me 9 BGW18 for -4

    Johnson,
    Coufal, Robbo, Stones18
    Bruno18 C,Son18, Grealish18, Salah
    Kane18, Bamford, Watkins18

Just to be clear, I'm not going to FH. This is my current team.

          Martinez (Nyland)
          Dias Mitchell (Robbo, Ayling, Balbuena)
          Bruno, Rashford, Martinelli (Salah, Soucek)
          Kane (Adams, Bamford)

Ayling/Balbuena & Salah out for Cancelo and KDB for a -4.

Salah and Martial in for Rashford & KDB for the double for a -4.

Wildcarded in GW16 and initial plan was to do FH18 and BB19 but with all this corona around not so sure now and also dont like so much this week and fixtures for FH.

Can I save FH with having only this six players?

    Cancelo Lowton
    KdB(C) Bruno
    Kane Adams

And then the team for BB19 will be:

    Meslier
    Cancelo Justin Coufal
    Salah Bruno KdB Soucek
    Kane Adams Bamford

    McCarthy Dallas Romeu Lowton

Yea looks good, what’s ur bench? Imagine free hitting and then 2/3 of your players are out. What a waste of a chip
My FH bench is Darlow, Benteke, Holgate and Mitchell.
Over-kill maybe, but happy with my Xi so can afford it

      1. JONALDINHO
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Surely a bench of Brewster, Mitchell and Kilman is fine. Chances of 4 of your players not playing is extremely unlikely. The chances of players like Benteke and Holgate returning is even more unlikely

        1. have you seen cyan
          • 4 Years

I think Holgate and Benteke might have pretty decent stats tbh, for their cost anyway. I think it’s wise to have a good bench.
There were many no shows recently, could happen again and as I said it’s a waste of a chip in that sense. Having Brewster it Kilman coming on is awful
