Maddison makes a late case for Double Gameweek 19 as clean sheets elude Leicester

Newcastle United 1-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Andy Carroll (£5.2m) | James Maddison (£7.1m), Youri Tielemans (£6.4m)
  • Assists: Jamie Vardy (£10.2m), Marc Albrighton (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Carroll x3, Maddison x2, Tielemans x1

A late Andy Carroll (£5.2m) goal for Newcastle couldn’t deny Leicester a well-deserved win, but it did spoil the Sundays of Fantasy managers the world over.

The striker’s 81st-minute consolation denied FPL’s most-owned defender, James Justin (£5.0m and 25.4%), clean sheet points and potential maximum bonus.

In fact, Justin’s owners effectively lost eight points in 30 harrowing seconds as their man was also booked just before Carroll scored.

Leicester Fiesta

Not that it was all bad news for those with Foxes in their squads, with the 27.8%-owned Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) producing a third assist in as many starts when he set up James Maddison‘s (£7.1m) opener.

That makes it eight assists for the striker this season – his best-ever return was 12 in the 2014/15 campaign – which has helped to paper over some recent cracks as he’s scored just the one goal in five Gameweeks now.

Maddison, meanwhile, made it a second straight attacking return, and five from his last six starts.

His season has been compromised by injury and inconsistency, with an ongoing knee issue having to be managed game by game, as Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed:

James, I think you probably saw in the Manchester United game, he wasn’t quite 100 per cent but he was pushing himself through. Again, because of the timeline of the games, he couldn’t be involved (in Gameweek 16). He still had the soreness after the game.

Unless he features in the FA Cup, the England international will have a decent rest as Leicester don’t have a Gameweek 18 fixture, which should boost his chances of featuring heavily in the team’s Double Gameweek 19.

But as Youri Tielemans‘ (£6.4m) winning strike demonstrated, the goals have been shared out among the side’s midfielders this season.

That’s made it hard for Fantasy managers to rely on a specific player for consistent returns, although Maddison is starting to build up a strong case – and momentum.

Back Line Blues

Carroll’s strike meant a third straight match without a clean sheet for a team just one point off top spot, but decidedly mid-table when it comes to goals conceded (21).

The Foxes’ total of two clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks has also been trumped by 12 other clubs.

Justin’s relatively cheap price has kept his sizeable fan base onside thus far, but two of his three attacking returns came in the first two matches of the season and the last one was back in Gameweek 12.

Leicester’s immediate fixtures – Southampton, Chelsea and Leeds (all at home) and Everton away – aren’t exactly the stuff of nailed-on clean sheets, although the eight-game run that follows offers better defensive prospects.

And the return from injury of Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m), who played 11 minutes at St James’ Park, could also add to the side’s stability at the back.

Chips Anyone?

Stability and Newcastle rarely hit it off, even if a Gameweek 16 nil-niller with Liverpool showed a certain defensive resilience and confirmed the continued excellence of keeper Karl Darlow (£5.0m).

The Magpies do have a Gameweek 18 fixture, however, and it’s against Sheffield United.

That could attract interest from those managers employing their Free Hit chip, with Darlow or a defender a decent option for the trip to the league’s least potent attack.

The more adventurous might also consider Callum Wilson (£6.5m) as an option – the Blades, after all, are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Admittedly, the forward has scored just the once in his last five starts and had neither a shot, nor created a single chance, against Leicester.

But Steve Bruce has approached matches against the Premier League also-rans differently of late and we are likely to see a more attacking set-up at Bramall Lane, with a move away from a conservative back five a strong possibility based on the Newcastle head coach’s previous tactical tweaks in the more ‘winnable’ games.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Darlow; Yedlin (Carroll 79), Fernandez, Schar, Clark, Ritchie; S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Almiron (Murphy 64); Joelinton (Shelvey 65), Wilson.

Leicester City XI (4-3-2-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne; Ndidi, Tielemans, Albrighton; Maddison (Soyuncu 79), Barnes; Vardy.

I think this team is too weak to not play FH, current playing players are:

    Martinez
    Mitchell / Dias / Lowton
    KDB / Bruno
    DCL / Kane

surely got to FH? I do have 2 FT's though...

Ideally another decent mid i.e. Son or someone very likely to return, then another defender i.e. Stones or Holding, but then I may need to take a hit to get those players even with 2 FT

    So...Does luck really exist?!

Recently there has been a good amount of discussion on here regarding this question.

This ranges from the game being "all luck" to "you get the rewards you deserve" to somewhere in between.

In my view, unless you believe in some unseen power (which of course is your right) then luck does not in fact exist.

Even if you don't believe in some higher force at play, then it also needs to be accepted that bad luck also is counter balanced by good fortune.

So, if your opponent is jammy enough to get Soucek off the bench then that could be viewed as bad luck for you, but of course their experience is the opposite.

As humans, we are naturally inclined to notice what affects us adversely more quickly than what goes well for us. So while we might quickly rue points on the bench, we can easily forget how our keeper with clean sheet points stood and watched the ball crash on his crossbar twice in a match.

Of course, you could argue that people can get an unusual streak of good/bad fortune over time, and that is of course true.

So is that not truly lucky or unlucky? Not really, because over time this will normally balance out.

For example, the average score for rolling a dice is 3.5 - it is possible to score higher or lower than that (say with 10 rolls) but the longer you keep rolling the dice the closer you will get to the average score of 3.5

The same applies to FPL - you may have bad weeks but will also have good weeks. Over a longer period, you may have a run of climbing the ranks but may also have periods when you sink like a stone.

The same applies when playing for a number of seasons, with ranks that are up and down but on average end up where you deserve to be, based on how you play the game.

However, FPL of course is very different to simply rolling a dice, as our decisions have a huge effect on how we do.

For those of you like me ancient and unfortunate enough to have studied Latin, then it is worth noting the quote from Seneca who said "Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity"

For example, at a high level for example, if you consider 2 groups of players:

    (1) A group of players that are in form, with good fixtures, good value, less likely to be booked, less likely to be rotated, more likely to keep clean sheets, less prone to injury, BAP magnets etc

    (2) A group of players that are the opposite of that.

It stands to reason that if you concentrate more on building a squad from the first group then the likelihood of getting "lucky" will be higher.

Similarly, if you build a team with high reward/high risk players (a valid strategy) then things may go really well (or badly) or even somewhere in between.

The same applies to putting all your eggs in one basket if you select a lot of players from a small number of clubs.

As we saw with covid cancellations, that can bite quickly if a few of your clubs have cancelled fixtures. And let's be honest, we all knew at the beginning of the season that was a possibility...

The reality is obviously far more nuanced and harder to predict - for example you can have a player like Mahrez that was highly prone to rotation but still was one of the better value and higher scoring mids last season, or you could have a keeper playing for a poor side but racks up save points and bonus.

If you still believe that its all luck, then believe what you see not what people say. How else can certain FPL players regularly finish inside the top 1k? Maybe there is a God.

    Good "luck" to all regardless.

Wow. Unless you know the future in advance there's luck in everything. We call unpredictable as luck or any other eloquent word you choose. Also luck balances out is a myth. It may or may not. People at the top are one extreme of the variance so using them to compare the average is not correct. Anyway people will use luck to explain events whether it applies or not.

Also if losing a double CS is a bad luck (I also lost double CS with that Chelsea goal), then a CS where a player misses a big chance in another game is a good luck, isn't it?

Doesnt have to be a higher power involved to still be a game of chance.......which it is
You can attempt to improve those chances by studying the form books and stats, being alert to team news, injuries and tweets, but could still end up frustratingly with nothing whilst poor players inexplicably do well.
Most on this site tend to take the game seriously and want to do well, yet despite trying to 'make our own luck' we all have mixed experiences because of chance.
Theres a tendancy on here to think its bad luck if a decision goes wrong but if it goes right its down to our clever decision making, whereas in fact both are down to chance.
there are genuince cases where every decision seems to go wrong and also sometimes when you go on a run where everything goes right.
In my mind captains are a complete lottery, but picking a team is an art where a strategy should pay off in the long term vs someone who picks at random or leaves their team......but chance as ever will have a say

"Luck" doesn't exist but it's a handy & succinct byword that encapsulates the coming together of probabilities.

It's easier to say "bad luck" than "unfortunate result that had a probability to happen".

People use the two interchangeably. Some know what they mean, some don't. One of those things that people love to rib its syntax for, yet the user often knows the intention.

If you ask if something exist it will at least exist as a written "thing". But nonetheless, what you perhaps are trying to elaborate here is the word Coincidence? That two unrelated things occur or not occurring, from whatever position (different angles) that deems something that happens from their pov. For instance, there is a lot of factors contributing to soucek goal last friday, and there is a lot of factors and decisions that have made or not made him in your starting eleven, or bench or not in squad at all. And then you might had him playing the week before and so on. Someone made decision that West ham played Everton in gw16 and not 15 some where around May.

    Martinez Soucek Konsa Mitchell.

no. Konsa 1cs at best, Mitchell plays City

If AVL keep a CS, that's about 18 points from Martinez and Konsa across the two games.
Soucek in two plum home games could potentially get anywhere between 4-12 points.

I have went with Rodrigo due to budget. Prefer Adams since Ings is back and is nailed to play 90 mins.

    Cancelo = Lamptey
only difference is that Lamptey dont get CS

always up for attacking returns but hardly ever get one

Yes my FH would look like something along the lines of:

        Darlow
        Cancelo Dias AWB
        Son KDB Saka Bruno
        Kane Wilson Martial

I think not using FH I will hit around low 40s. With FH I reckon I hit low 60s...

Is Bailly a valid player to consider for a defensive spot ?

Already own Cancelo and think i would prefer to reduce the rotation risk longer term buy not buying Stones.

But only if Bailly is not seen as a rotation risk. Which many may think he is.

      I’m definitely TC.

KDB probably as relatively low ownership.

Tempted by Fernandes though, 2 away games. Pretty much 25 points nailed...

KDB vs Palace especially who lost 7-0 to Liverpool. Can be huge

Thoughts on this for gw 18:
    Martinez (steer)
    Taylor* dier Mitchell (coufal dallas)
    Son salah* Bruno (bissouma madison)
    Kane adams* bam
    1 FT

    I'm free hitting gw 19.
Planning to do Taylor to city defender for sure. Also salah to kdb/sterling is likely.

Now is it worth doing adams to wilson for another -4? Feel wilson has better overall fixtures and gw 18 worst case scenario would be -2 pts. Thoughts?

    Thoughts on this FH?

    Darlow
    Stones Tierney Holding
    Son Bruno KDB Foden
    Laca Kane Martial
    (4.0, Saka, Mitchell, Kilman)

    1. Rinseboy
      • 12 Years

      I like it.

Not sure on double Ars defence can see Palace nicking a goal. Think City double defence might be better. Foden and Tierney to Saka and Dias/Cancello?

Also Rash is better option than Martial imo due to Cavani

Seeing alot of FH teams with Arsenal defenders and even a couple of double ups at the back, I'm personally not confident cpl don't score, Zaha is always up for playing the 'bigger' teams.

The game will end 0-1 to Palace and people will be giving out about them being terribly unlucky when we’re talking about Arsenal. People tripling up is laughable

    3. Long ago I drew a walrus
      • 13 Years

Absolutely, my most recent draft included Zaha and double Arsenal defence. The thing is with the exception of City it's hard to call any of the CSs and you can't triple up on City defence because they don't have 3 nailed options (even Ederson, not sure if he'll be back from COVID by then). The only other options, realistically, are Man Utd and Newcastle Utd neither of which are significantly better options than Arsenal def

After considering options, will remove Salah (KDB) & a defender for a hit to give 9 BGW18 players?

    Martínez
    Stones, ???
    Grealish, Bruno, Son, KDB
    Kane, Watkins

Which defender to sell, already for dgw19 ?

Zouma, Dallas, Coufal, to get City defender Zouma needs to go, Tierney, Maguire, AWB?
