When will the next FPL Double Gameweeks take place this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers should expect an abnormally high number of Double Gameweeks this season.

And keeping an eye on when these might crop up is important for those looking to make the most of their chips – especially the Triple Captain.

As a result of the unprecedented coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the 2020/21 campaign is the most compressed in modern memory.

Due to a later-than-usual start, there is more pressure on the clashes between league and cup commitments for top-flight teams. This has given schedulers less time to fit in the usual postponements and, of course, we have seen COVID-19 itself put paid to several additional fixtures too.

But when will these inevitable Double Gameweeks surface? And, more importantly, is there anything Fantasy managers can do to pre-empt them and take the rearrangements in their stride?

In this article, we will look at the three specific Premier League clubs involved in the EFL Cup semi-finals, considering the possible scheduling headaches in store for each of them.

Before dive in, it is worth pointing out that these scenarios are not predictions. In each case, they illustrate the fixture pile-up that would result from continued success for each team on all cup fronts in Europe, the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

This should help clarify where Double Gameweeks could feature, as things stand. Further opportunities may open up, depending on the configuration and timing of future Cup defeats though.

The most recent rearrangements involved Burnley v Manchester United and Manchester City v Aston Villa, which have gone into Blank Gameweek 18 and Double Gameweek 19 respectively.

There are currently a further four matches awaiting date reassignments, each of them postponed because of COVID-19 outbreaks.

  • Aston Villa v Newcastle (Gameweek 11)
  • Everton v Manchester City (Gameweek 16)
  • Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham (Gameweek 16)
  • Burnley v Fulham (Gameweek 17)

Barring coordinated early FA Cup exits or some scheduling wizardry, it is unlikely that any of these fixtures will be reassigned before Gameweek 23.

Manchester City

Matches to be rescheduled:

  • Gameweek 16: Everton (away)

Future possible Cup-related postponements:

  • Gameweek 29 (FA Cup quarter-finals): Wolves (home)
  • Gameweek 32 (FA Cup semi-finals): Aston Villa (away)
  • Gameweek 33 (EFL Cup final): Southampton (home)
  • Gameweek 37 (FA Cup final): Brighton (away)

On the assumption Manchester City continue to progress on all fronts this season, there are currently five available midweek slots to accommodate any rescheduled matches. These are Gameweeks 24, 26, 27, 32 and 37.

Gameweeks 32 and 37 look unlikely to become a Double for Pep Guardiola’s men as both the Aston Villa and Brighton matches can drop into the immediately subsequent midweek slots if rearrangements need to happen.

We will know whether or not Manchester City are competing in Gameweek 33’s EFL Cup final a few days after Gameweek 17.

The midweek following the final is set aside for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

Given the last-sixteen ties will only be completed during midweek of Gameweek 28, any postponement for Southampton’s league trip to the Etihad Stadium fixture would likely be arranged early to form either a Double Gameweek 24, 26 or 27.

Gameweek 29 is scheduled to coincide with the FA Cup quarter-finals and immediately proceeds the March international break.

As the quarter-final ties will be determined following the fifth-round matches during the midweek of Gameweek 23, any rescheduling of Manchester City’s home game against Wolves in Gameweek 29 could drop into Gameweek 26 or 27.

The postponed trip to Everton from Gameweek 16 should also feature in either Gameweek 24, 26 or 27.

As a result, continued progress on all Cup fronts could result in four Double Gameweeks for Manchester City between Gameweeks 19 and 27.

This possible scenario illustrates how little room for manoeuvre there is for schedulers. A further COVID-19 postponement for Guardiola’s men could foreseeably force a compressed midweek Double Gameweek toward the end of the campaign, or even delay the end of the season for some clubs.

Manchester United

Fernandes scores again as new Pogba role pushes Rashford to the right

Manchester United matches to be rescheduled:

  • None (at time of writing)

Future possible Cup-related postponements:

  • Gameweek 29 (FA Cup quarter-finals): Crystal Palace (away)
  • Gameweek 32 (FA Cup semi-finals): Burnley (home)
  • Gameweek 33 (EFL Cup final): Leeds (away)
  • Gameweek 37 (FA Cup final): Fulham (home)

On the assumption Manchester United continue to progress on all cup fronts, there are just three available midweek slots to accommodate any rescheduled matches.

This reduced number compared to their City rivals is due to the extra knockout round the Europa League features over the Champions League.

The available midweek slots in question are in Gameweeks 26, 32 and 37.

Therefore, progression on all fronts for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s in-form squad will likely lead to a compressed Double Gameweek toward the end of the season, perhaps in Gameweek 37.

Tottenham Hotspur

Kane and Son proving difficult to sell ahead of Double Gameweek 19

Spurs matches to be rescheduled:

  • Gameweek 16: Fulham (home)

Future possible Cup-related postponements:

  • Gameweek 29 (FA Cup quarter-finals): Southampton (home)
  • Gameweek 32 (FA Cup semi-finals): Everton (away)
  • Gameweek 33 (EFL Cup final): Fulham (away)
  • Gameweek 37 (FA Cup final): Aston Villa (home)

Like Manchester United, Spurs’ involvement in the Europa League could hamper their domestic scheduling.

And with their Gameweek 16 match also requiring rearranging, the result could rise to five rescheduled fixtures, with only three remaining midweek slots to accommodate them: Gameweeks 26, 32 and 37.

This is another scenario that could lead to a compressed midweek Double Gameweek toward the end of the season.

I hope these example scenarios have whetted your appetite for future Double Gameweeks.

It must be said that Premier League schedulers have their work cut out for them right now and will have even more on their hands in the coming weeks and months.

The question some Fantasy managers should be asking themselves in light of this information is: will you still be playing your Triple Captain chip in Double Gameweek 19?

It is clear that 2020/21 has the potential to feature more Double Gameweeks than any other previous season. The chances of the perfect moment to deploy the Triple Captain arising at some point between now and the end of the campaign are certainly high indeed.

Annoying. Was always on Salah to KDB for the dgw. Also allows a Johnstone upgrade... just need to pray McCarthy and Adams are fit. Others scared to BB in 19 incase of fixture postponements?

I was saving BB as didn't have enough TV to set up a decent BB side, all the COVID business only solidifying that decision.

I made up a deficit of 100 points in the last 2 gameweeks a number of years ago (5 or 6?)

Last week was a high scoring gameweek. I was focused on trying to win my manager of the month. Wasn’t even considering winning the ml.

Currently on 8 players (w/ Brewster) for GW18, wanting to save FH. Is it worth downgrading either Salah or Robbo (to either Rashford or Man U defender) in order to upgrade Brewster?

      Martinez
      Cancelo, Stones
      KDB, Fernandes, Son
      DCL, Brewster

(Bench: Steer, Salah, Robbo, Bamford, Dallas, Coufal, Soucek)

Can field 9 players and cover several big hitters already.
Putting more eggs into fewer baskets means if a fixture is called off you've lost a lot more players and essentially wasted a chip.

Because I have the core (KDB, Son, Bruno, double city Def), and there aren't that many other players I'm that afraid not to have. I am fine dropping 10-15 points this week to save the FH I think - there will be blank gameweeks in the future where I will be really glad I still have it I think.

If you feel like sh*t after your GW, read this:

There is no way that anyone here had a more unfortunate GW than I did.
First of all: I got 21 points on the bench with Mitchell, Cresswell and JWP.
Obviously I played TAA, Justin and Holding instead.

      - Justin lost nearly all of his points in a few seconds.
      - Cresswell got an assist but he actually didn't assist.

Then before the Liverpool game I had a small lead in the Cup and Salah on my side, while the opponent had JWP and Phillips. Phillips didn't even play.

I then dropped out of the Cup with a one point difference, 70-71 and as if that wasn't bad enough, I have been preparing my entire team for the DGW over the last few weeks. This means I have hardly any players for the BGW and with a free hit I will not only lose 0.2 or 0.3 on DCL, but also 0.2 or 0.3 on Salah and other underperforming players like TAA.

+ I'm a diehard Liverpool Supporter and obviously gutted af.

+ There was at least one clear pen for us tonight which pi*ses me of really strongly. Several other wrong decisions including a both footed tackle on Milner which could possibly have been "darkest shade of yellow" as we say here.

I'll have a huge amount of Single Malt now to come down and relax.
This is to build up everyone here who is annoyed. As you it could also be worse.

Ouch! I think JWP is a player to set and forget, never know when he will get points inconsistent - but on set pieces.

I fkn hate having more options than 11 nailed starters in my team. It never works out and I'll wildcard my team back to 11 starters to avoid overthinking. Never have 2 playing GKs in my team as well.

Honestly I actually dislike BB because of this. Prefer it didn't exist, but like you said, I hate having 2 gks, hate having rotating front 8, its just a nightmare and a waste of funds generally. Get your BB out the way, and ditch the chaff and move on

The referee was abysmal tonight, should be looked at. Aside from the penalties how he let two scything tackles on James Milner go unpunished is beyond the pale.

That's a rough one man. But don't worry too much about the cup - 70 points is a nice score this gwk and the odds of winning that cup are astronomical anyway

You still scored 70 though! Just a bit of bad luck. On paper you benched the right people.
If it makes you feel better..... A guy in my mini league scored 25 points for the week, captained DCL and his only return was Vardy's assist. Highest scoring player in his 15 was KWP - who he benched.

        Chin up.

Is this enough for gw18 or taka hit to get a City defender?

      Martinez
      Dier, Tierney
      Son, KDB, Bruno, Zaha, Grealish
      DCL, Brewster

Finally made my decision. Dumped Salah for Fernandes.
Let's me have 9 players plus Brewster gw18.

      Decided a BB on DGW19 is not worth a -8 for a full 15
      Likely TC DGW19.

I honestly don't think he will. Man United likely to beat Liverpool as they are on form. Plus Burnley will just sit back and make themselves awkward to break down.

Not because of a few blanks, but because of body language, fixtures, price, and more consistent better options - in my case Fernandes.

Salah has pretty much ruined my season (along with my own poor decisions!)
GW9 - remove Covid Mo, proceeds to return in the next 5 games that I dont own him.

GW15, i need him for WBA. Have Bruno and KDB, want to keep KDB for the 18 dbl, sell Bruno(as part of 4 point hit)
GW16, capt Mo, does nothing, Bruno hauls against Leicester. F-it, i need Bruno back, but still want to keep Mo for Newcastle, Kdb must go.
GW17, capt Mo, does nothing, kdb blank gw slightly softens the blow of moving him out instead of Mo.
GW18, Mo, does nothing, thankfully no Capt, and KDB decides to haul now. Need KDB back
GW19, Mo get out of my team. KDB back in, will be part of a -4 to get an extra player.

This makes me weep looking at this, he caused my rank to die in the 5 weeks i didnt have him, and he has continued to help my rank die since I brought him in.
      I hate him!

        I know how you feel.

        I'm on the same boat.

Worst is that I felt he looked poor before Palace but that brace and assist hooked me to captain him 3 gws. Lost 30 points easily.

I decided to perma captain him after the Palace game having had a few blanks before and during that week. I've been relying on lucky hauls from the likes of Dallas and Holding to maintain rank. Gonna stick with it in the double, but don't think I'll go near the triple captain just yet.

Similar story here, picked Mane over Salah on a gameweek 9 wildcard owing to the latter having covid at the time. Mane proceeds to transform into a donkey whilst Salah brings in double digit hauls the following GWs. Finally have enough and the swap them around for a -4 against WBA for Mane to score and Salah to transform into a donkey instead for the first three games of owning him. Consequently in most of my mini leagues I've gone from the title race to a lower mid-table scrap during this time.

Hi guys, thoughts on below FT team? Would you swap Dias/Rashford for Bailly/Sterling to go double Man City attack and add Utd def?

      Leno
      Dias Stones Holding
      KDB Bruno Rashford Son Saka
      Kane Wilson

      Thanks

29 could be an absolutely horrendous GW, can see an average of 10 points being recorded that week.

Naturally, that makes it the perfect FH week!

I dont. If I could get 8+ out, I wouldnt use it. I can get 6 so using it. Hopefully I can plan and manage something next BGW that minimises impact then, but for now, a BGW immediately before a DGW that I can BB and get up to 30 players scoring, why wouldnt I. 30 players DGW19 c/f maybe losing 3 or 4 i.e. 8 players out next BGW seems a no brainer to me.

Depends on your team. I only have 4 players in 18, as I've been building for DGW players in 19. I am definitely using FH in 18.

Well considering Man City and Spurs will have more doubles. I think there are better options in future. Plus I will have 9 players plus Brewster for gw18 so FH a waste for me.
Also bench boost not an option for me because it would cost me a -8 to try and get full value out of it.

So I am biding my time.
