Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for dozens of Premier League players.

Any Fantasy asset who collects five cautions in the English top flight before their team has completed 19 fixtures will serve a one-match ban in the same competition.

Beyond that cut-off point, the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a little way to go before they are in the clear, then.

After a frenetic festive period, the respite provided by the FA Cup third round seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There are a grand total of 19 Premier League players teetering on the brink of a one-match ban.

Among them is Jack Grealish (£7.7m), who has been sat on four bookings since Gameweek 15.

Featuring in more than one in three Fantasy Premier League squads, Grealish is by far the most-owned player who has four yellow cards to his name.

A booking in Gameweek 18 would mean that Grealish would miss the first of Aston Villa’s two Gameweek 19 fixtures.

And even if the Villa talisman avoids that fate, a caution in the match against Everton would see him suspended for the second instalment of that Gameweek 19 double-header.

Teammates Matt Targett (£4.6m) and John McGinn (£5.5m) are, of course, in exactly the same situation.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m), Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m) are among the other players who boast an FPL ownership in excess of 4% who also sit on four bookings.

That trio of assets also enjoy two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19.

THE FULL LIST

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

Of less concern, at least at this stage, are the players sitting on three bookings.

James Justin (£5.0m), Wilfried Zaha (£7.4m), Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.4m), whose teams have already fulfilled 17 league fixtures, would have to pick up two bookings in their next two games in order to be handed a one-match ban.

Popular FPL buys Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m), Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) and Joao Cancelo (£5.7m) are also among the 33-strong group of players who are a couple of cautions away from a suspension.

For Fernandes and Cancelo, a booking in Gameweek 18 would leave them precariously on four yellow cards heading into the Gameweek 19 double-header.

THE FULL LIST

CURRENTLY SUSPENDED/ALREADY SERVED A BAN

The four players who picked up their fifth bookings of the season at the weekend included Yves Bissouma (£4.5m), who will miss Brighton and Hove Albion’s trip to Manchester City in Blank Gameweek 18.

The other three, N’Golo Kante (£4.9m), Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) and Conor Gallagher (£5.5m), will miss the first fixture in their respective teams’ Gameweek 19 double-header.

Another five FPL assets have already served one-match bans for yellow card accumulation.

Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) is among them and is already well on his way to ten bookings – more on which below.

THE FULL LIST

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Fulham are two games behind where they would usually be at this stage, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Newcastle United one match in arrears.

Barring any further postponements and rearrangements, the ’19th fixture’ cut-off points for all 20 Premier League clubs are as follows:

ClubPlayers are no longer at risk of a one-match ban for yellow card accumulation after the completion of…
ArsenalGW19
Aston VillaGW20
BrightonGW19
BurnleyGW20
ChelseaGW19
Crystal PalaceGW19
EvertonGW20
FulhamGW21
LeedsGW19
LeicesterGW19
LiverpoolGW19
Man CityGW20
Man UtdGW19
NewcastleGW20
Sheff UtdGW19
SouthamptonGW19
SpursGW20
West BromGW19
West HamGW19
WolvesGW19

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

No Free Hit available, been building with FT towards the blank. How does this look, only 10 starters:

    Martinez
    Stones | Holding | Ampadu
    Fernandes | Son | Grealish | Saka
    DCL | Watkins

    Button | Salah | Robertson | Bamford | Dallas

      Lacklustre.

You have players but they aren't great ones. Consider Salah > KdB.

Yeah with lack of Free Hit been trying to manage getting players with games over the past few weeks.

Had Holding for 3 weeks which has obviosuly worked, Ampadu for 2 which obviously hasn't.

Stones and Saka in for this coming week.

Very risky, every chance Balbuena comes back in and Dawson drops out, would rather try find the money to get Coufal in or just stick with Balbuena.

      Could get stung with Dawson

Ivegot Coufal already and bougt in balbeuna for the double on my wc gw16. Since then hes been dropped. Ive got 4.5 & 1 transfer for gw19

It wouldn't be a transfer I'd be making. I'd either find a more nailed player or stick and gamble on Balbuena coming back in.

Haha, I was so excited too! Then I took a long, hard look at my side yesterday, tinkered a bit, and realized I already had the core components for a WC18 in place (Triple City, double Villa, single Utd), so there wasn't much point and I could end up compromising 18 in the process. Chips safely in store unless I wish to FH19.

Not against a low block. Vardy has Southampton and an extremely poor Chelsea. Rashford has Liverpool and Fulham. I can see more points for Vardy + Rashford in those games.

Something that even they don't know. But with the situation they are in and the way Mourinho plays, I see a goal by Spurs followed by them sitting back and protecting that 1 goal lead. SHU won't have enough to equalize and force Spurs to push for more than 1 goal. I see that game to finsih either 1-0 or 2-0 for Spurs.

Leeds just love to leave gaps everywhere. Have concede 4 more goals than SHU. And should have conceded more if they were not lucky in few of the games.

Perhaps...but if there's ever an attack they can safely continue to push on against, it's Sheffield. I'd say 3-0 would be about par. Also ideal game for Kane to run up his numbers.

Probably. But who do you think scores more in the DGW?

Son + Kane with a combined 1 game?
Rashford + Vardy with combined 4 games?

Rashford + Vardy but Son and Kane should have combined 2 games not 1 game with that logic unless you think they play 45 minutes each.

Get your point. Plus the fact that they have much better fixtures post the DGW make them more favorable options than the Spurs' assets as per me.

Not playing a FH, is this a good hit?

Mitchel and Salah out for KDB and Stones? I prefer Stones due to money reasons compared to Dias. If must I can go Dias but need the money for the double GW.

Salah can be back for Son next GW or I might go without him until the City fixtures turn or so

My free hit team. Anything I'm missing?

    De Gea
    Dias, Bellerin, Stones
De Bruyne, Fernandes, Son, Rashford, Neto
    Kane, Wilson

    Steer, Fernandez, Davis, Douglas

Wouldn't pick Bellerin personally. Either Tierney or Holding.
And maybe consider Cancelo over either Dias or Stones?

      Otherwise looks lovely!

I suppose the real question, for anyone considering Che Adams, is whether they themselves have suffered concussion recently.

People react differently to concussions though, some people are fine after a couple of days, for others the effects can linger for weeks.

He works well with Ings though. Ings dropping low, always followed by a defender, opens up space for Adams.

Here’s the current FH18 draft. 0.1 ITB. Thoughts appreciated 🙂
    1) Lloris v Darlow
    2) Wilson Gundo (Saka benched) v Zaha Davis (bench fodder)

    Lloris
    Cancelo Tierney Saiss
    KDB(c) Bruno Son Gundo (Saka)
    Kane Lacazette Wilson

Cheers - just loathe to have to bench Saka or Gundo tbh... if I go the Zaha option then I ditch one of gundo/Saka to Zaha, wilson to Davis and the bench is just non playing

Might be a good idea to have 1 good sub with so many games getting postponed Might play Saka ahead of Gundo though. Not keen on Saiss

needs more united, Ditch Saka for a 4.3, Swap Lloris to Leno, Saiss to Shaw and see if you can fit in Rashford in the midfield for Gundo?

Thoughts on the 9 man FH side?

Will weigh up Vardy -> Watkins & James -> Maguire for hits, the first move frees up cash for Son -> Salah next GW alongside Burke -> Soucek for BB.

    Martinez
    Stones Cancelo
    KdB Bruno Son Grealish Burke
    Wood

Right.... have been planning on BB19 - thoughts? Would require shifting Mitchell Davis, and I have 1.7 ITB... tricky to do - would you sell Robbo for funds even?

    Martinez Areola
    Robbo Coufal Dallas Pieters Mitchell
    Salah Bruno KDB Son Soucek
    Bamford Watkins Davis

Cheers 🙂 or also... would you not use BB in casa games get called off somehow in the DGW and it’s left looking wasted by minimized fixtures when I could’ve just had a bench? Hmm

Cheers for reply Camzy - as above, just loathe to lose Son for reasons listed, I know I’ll want him back and will have to pay like 0.3 or more extra then ya know? You wouldn’t sooner sel Robbo?

Wasn’t able to watch the game’s second half today - how were Liverpool? Salah / Robbo unlucky not to return anything? Or were they all as largely bad as the first half? Would you sell Robbo to help fund bench upgrades, if playing BB is even still a good idea (above)?

Also whatta bout Saints, dammit I wish I could fit Ings in my DGW team... would have to downgrade son though and have made so much dish on the guy from 9.0 it seems criminal to sell with how reliable he is....

It. was a bit of a rope-a-dope. Liverpool dominated possession and territory without creating much, but by the end it was Southampton who looked likeliest to score.

Have 3 players for gw 18, so freehit is the obvius choise.
After reading some comments on here i guess i should wait and see what happens, even if Price fall/rise can make that i cant afford all the players i want.
