Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for dozens of Premier League players.

Any Fantasy asset who collects five cautions in the English top flight before their team has completed 19 fixtures will serve a one-match ban in the same competition.

Beyond that cut-off point, the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a little way to go before they are in the clear, then.

After a frenetic festive period, the respite provided by the FA Cup third round seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There are a grand total of 19 Premier League players teetering on the brink of a one-match ban.

Among them is Jack Grealish (£7.7m), who has been sat on four bookings since Gameweek 15.

Featuring in more than one in three Fantasy Premier League squads, Grealish is by far the most-owned player who has four yellow cards to his name.

A booking in Gameweek 18 would mean that Grealish would miss the first of Aston Villa’s two Gameweek 19 fixtures.

And even if the Villa talisman avoids that fate, a caution in the match against Everton would see him suspended for the second instalment of that Gameweek 19 double-header.

Teammates Matt Targett (£4.6m) and John McGinn (£5.5m) are, of course, in exactly the same situation.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m), Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m) are among the other players who boast an FPL ownership in excess of 4% who also sit on four bookings.

That trio of assets also enjoy two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19.

THE FULL LIST

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

Of less concern, at least at this stage, are the players sitting on three bookings.

James Justin (£5.0m), Wilfried Zaha (£7.4m), Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.4m), whose teams have already fulfilled 17 league fixtures, would have to pick up two bookings in their next two games in order to be handed a one-match ban.

Popular FPL buys Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m), Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) and Joao Cancelo (£5.7m) are also among the 33-strong group of players who are a couple of cautions away from a suspension.

For Fernandes and Cancelo, a booking in Gameweek 18 would leave them precariously on four yellow cards heading into the Gameweek 19 double-header.

THE FULL LIST

CURRENTLY SUSPENDED/ALREADY SERVED A BAN

The four players who picked up their fifth bookings of the season at the weekend included Yves Bissouma (£4.5m), who will miss Brighton and Hove Albion’s trip to Manchester City in Blank Gameweek 18.

The other three, N’Golo Kante (£4.9m), Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) and Conor Gallagher (£5.5m), will miss the first fixture in their respective teams’ Gameweek 19 double-header.

Another five FPL assets have already served one-match bans for yellow card accumulation.

Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) is among them and is already well on his way to ten bookings – more on which below.

THE FULL LIST

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Fulham are two games behind where they would usually be at this stage, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Newcastle United one match in arrears.

Barring any further postponements and rearrangements, the ’19th fixture’ cut-off points for all 20 Premier League clubs are as follows:

ClubPlayers are no longer at risk of a one-match ban for yellow card accumulation after the completion of…
ArsenalGW19
Aston VillaGW20
BrightonGW19
BurnleyGW20
ChelseaGW19
Crystal PalaceGW19
EvertonGW20
FulhamGW21
LeedsGW19
LeicesterGW19
LiverpoolGW19
Man CityGW20
Man UtdGW19
NewcastleGW20
Sheff UtdGW19
SouthamptonGW19
SpursGW20
West BromGW19
West HamGW19
WolvesGW19

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

Do you think Danny Ings is fixture-proof assuming he's fit?

Nobody is 'fixture proof' but he's nailed on when fit which it definitely looks like he is.

Ings and Vardy are kinda fixture proof. They both can score out of nothing.

        Agree,
The thing about him is every goal is usually worth 7 points as he usually hogs the baps, meanwhile DCL rarely gets bonus...
So that switch is really tempting with the DGW, even for a hit...

Cancelo a better pick than Stones. Both as much as a rotation risk as each other, but Cancelo was getting ridiculously far forward against Chelsea. Was on for BAP too had they kept a clean sheet.

Torn between just playing this team or a FH next week. Thoughts?

    Martinez
    Dias Cancelo
    KDB Bruno Son
    Watkins Brewster

Going with 8 seems thin especially given one is Brewster, but not sure a FH is worth it as only really missing Grealish, Kane and Arsenal.

Have 7 active players in BGW18, took a - 4 hit for Salah > KDB. Only one single playing defender in Saiss.

Done Salah to KDB last night as I was always going to make the move regardless if I'm FH.

Worth doing Balbuena to Stones (-4) having 8 players for BGW18 and saving FH? Also will have core players from Spurs, City and Utd.

Really sorry this is so long and confusing.
I wasn’t going to use my FH chip and am now having second thoughts. I am confused and really need some help if possible:
    My team was as follows:
    Martinez Forster
    Taylor Stones Coufal Kilman Dier
    Salah Bruno Son Grealish Burke
    Kane DCL Bamford
I transferred DCL, Son, Burke, Taylor out and brought Brewster, KDB, Saka, Dias in for a -8 hit.

    This gives me:
    Martinez Forster
    Dias Stones Coufal Kilman Dier
    Salah Bruno KDB Grealish Saka
    Kane Bamford Brewster

Can I make further transfers for hits to basically create my GW19 team, for example change Saka to Soucek creating:
    Martinez Forster
    Dias Stones Coufal Kilman Dier
    Salah Bruno KDB Grealish Soucek
    Kane Bamford Brewster

Then play the FH chip for GW18 and the team would go back to my last saved team above (including Soucek) that I made with hits? Plus all the hits would disappear?

Thanks so much for reading this and I hope it makes some sense!!!

Why does nobody know that you cannot make a transfer and then FH... It's so annoying honestly. Can't wait for this week to be over so we can stop answering FH questions.

You've taken a huge -8 already, just stick with it.

OP is suggesting the possibility of taking hits to build a GW19 team, with "further transfers for hits" on top of his existing 8 point hit, and once he reaches a team he's happy with for GW19, to THEN play the FH so that he can then get a FH for GW18, whilst also reverting to this "last saved team" for GW19, PLUS "all the hits would disappear".

What this essentially boils down to is that a FH not only gives you full freedom in GW18, but also gives you a wildcard for GW19 thrown in for free.

This is an amazing deal, where can I sign up?

          • 13 Years

In all seriousness though OP you get DCL Son Burke and Taylor back for GW19 if you FH in 18. All transfers are undone

Last season I did make a save of 2 free trades, then a free hit, which caused those two trades to be effective the following week. It does work - I don't know why people are saying it doesn't. You just have to save the trades before going back to do the free hit.

I really can't decide on this one.

You have sumed it up really in the first sentence.

Cancelo is a rotation risk and will be so long as other full backs remain fit. With the hectic schedule the attacking full backs are first to suffer.

        Dias is thr safer option.

If want peace of mind Dias but want a bit more excitement then Cancelo eith occasionall benching

This would give me 8 players GW18 so no FH and a strong team for DGW19.

Is it worth -8 and Salah hokey cokey though?

For this GW only, which is better?

      A- Grealish + Rashford
      B- Saka + Sterling

      Already have Bruno and KDB

        Best City Dfers -

        1) Cancelo

A huge gaping chasm bigger than the Grand Canyon

        2) Dias
        3) Stones

I'd have Stones in 2nd. Cheaper.

Cancelo has the biggest upside. Come the doubles, will Walker be challenging for his spot again?

Good thing with Cancelo is he can play both LB and RB.

Which combo for the last two slots on FH?

      A) Stones, Saiss/ Fernandez/ Shaw
      B) Cancelo, Yedlin

Also would you go Rashford or Son?

      Darlow
      XXXX, XXXX, Tierney
KDB, Sterling, Bruno, Son/ Rashford, Saka
      Kane, Wilson
      (Steer) (Mitchell, Davis, 3.9)

      Cheers 🙂

        Yes to Rashford over Son.

Probably A. I like Shaw this week. MUN very likely to keep it clean vs Burnley.

          Thanks Camzy!

I have had Son for a while and will still have in GW19 but Rashford is looking good recently and should hopefully be keeping his place.

          Are you playing FH also?

Yes. But I'm looking to change the team up. I'd like to take some risks. Rashford over Son being one of the key ones.

I'm unsure if risks is the way to go for me or if the FH is enough of an advantage.
I've done fine recently and got myself to just outside the top 100k, which feels like an achievement considering how this season's gone!

It's less 'risks' and more: who do I think will actually score more points?

I'm sick of picking Son and Grealish to protect rank. I don't think they will score better than other options, so I'm not gonna pick them.

Ownership should not impact on your FPL decisions.

Agree with you. You just never know when Son will explode again and he has been more recently in form than some other 'rank protection' options.

I may go Rashford too. I am pretty sure I'll go KDB + Sterling rather than double def though.

Grealish on 4YC's is worrying I won't lie.

He looks like he's good for a yellow most games I've watched him to be honest. He tackles like Paul Scholes 🙂

Only a dive away from a yellow too.

      Darlow
      Cancelo Tierney Shaw
      KDB Bruno Son Foden Saka
      Kane Martial

      Any thoughts here please?

Salah and James to KDB and Dallas(-4), gives me 8(9) depending on Taylor who likely wont play, if news that hes out longer would maybe move him over James this week to get Maguire/AWB

      GW 18
      Martinez
      Dias Holding *Taylor
      Bruno KDB Son Riedwald
      Kane
