The case for Aubameyang as part of a Free Hit squad in FPL Blank Gameweek 18

In his latest column, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser argues that deploying a Free Hit chip is the perfect time to awaken your inner maverick.

“A ship is always safe at the shore but that is not what it’s built for.” – Albert Einstein

Gameweek 18 is upon us and inadvertently, for a lot of you (but not me), it means that the Free Hit chip is about to be deployed.

Even the name tells us that this is a once-in-a-season, no-strings-attached, no-holds-barred, inner-voice-enabling chip! If you’re not channelling that inner instinct most weeks because this is ‘template season’ and are way too fearful of losing to the crowd, then this is the week to awaken your inner maverick. Put on your multi-coloured jacket and listen to yourself. Do it this one Gameweek – if you’re using the Free Hit, obviously. I insist!

Going with the theme of this introduction, I’m going to throw in a few not-so-template names in the hat that might seem ridiculous or not smart at first go, but I’ll build a case for them and leave the decision to you.

Also, I am writing this article before the Manchester cup derby so do not have any relevant information from that game at my disposal.

So the stage is set: enter Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m). I know, I know. Bukayo Saka (£5.3m) is literally mirroring his stats in the last few Gameweeks and costs six million less.

But when you’re looking at one stand-alone week, value doesn’t matter. So what case do I have for Aubameyang? In the last two Gameweeks, when he’s started with the in-form, rejuvenated Arsenal attackers, he is matching the stats of Saka and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m).

He’s registered 1.42 expected goals (xG) in his last two games, which is the same he managed in five full matches previously. His total of two big chances in the last two Gameweeks is also the same he managed in five full games previously.

All it takes is one game to click, to come back into form. All it takes is one poorly time Joel Ward (£4.3m) tackle in the penalty box for Aubameyang to hammer a penalty in the top-right corner. I mean, with 22 goals and a 24% conversion rate in both of his previous seasons, we know the class and the finishing ability of the man.

Arsenal are playing much better football right now, so much so that they are joint-top of the league (tied with Aston Villa) for shots in the box in the last four Gameweeks. If he’s going to get the chances, you’d fancy him to convert.

It comes down to the age-old argument of judging the data set of this terrible season that Arsenal have had or that of his previous six seasons, where he’s been one of Europe’s most lethal finishers.

Now if this was a long-term commitment, there’s no way I’d encourage getting into a more serious relationship with him. But he seems exciting enough for a fling, in my opinion. If you don’t do it, fair enough; I know there are ‘more right’ things to do on a Free Hit.

The next name I am going to throw in the ring is Luke Shaw (£4.8m). Yes, I’m recommending a player that has one Fantasy Premier League assist to his name in the last two seasons.

I’ll give you five reasons:

  • a) He’s not injured at the moment
  • b) He’s playing some really good football right now
  • c) He’s on some free-kicks and corners
  • d) No defender has created more chances than him in the last four Gameweeks
  • e) Burnley are bottom five in the league for shots in the box conceded in the last six Gameweeks

The third and final name that I’d like to throw into this hat is Raheem Sterling (£11.4m). I’m presuming most Free Hitters will triple up on Manchester City and while a double-up on defence might seem the right play long term (Joao Cancelo (£5.7m) needs to be one of them), for one Gameweek alone, I do like a Sterling punt.

He’s been in pretty good nick of late, registering six returns in as many games and clocking 90 minutes in all of them. When I’m looking at one-week punts, Sterling is one of those players that screams ‘brace potential’ to me. He did more than that last time he played his Gameweek 18 opponents, having scored a hat-trick at the Amex Stadium in 2019/20.

He’s second only to Jack Grealish (£7.7m) for expected assists (xA) in the last four Gameweeks and has four shots in the box in the same timeframe. Why I do like Sterling (and a City attacking double-up) in a fixture against Brighton is because the Seagulls will want to play their own game, rather than sit back. Like the Chelsea match, this will suit the press-resistant Manchester City attackers and offer them more space than they are generally used to.

For those that are not on the Free Hit, it seems like a good time to target assets from the Manchester teams as they play three matches in the next two Gameweeks and the fixtures are pretty decent from Gameweek 20, as well.

If you are still on the edge in terms of whether to Free Hit or not, one other factor I’d like you to consider is this: if you are using the Free Hit in Gameweek 18 and then spending transfers to get the same players from the Manchester teams next week, it might be worth holding onto the chip and then taking a hit or two to just bring the players in ahead of next Tuesday.

Remember it’s about the quality of the players you have and not the quantity.

Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

On a personal note, I’ve been climbing steadily and am currently ranked at 1.8 million in the world but can’t help but feel miffed at being on the wrong side of coronavirus-influenced rescheduling in Gameweek 16, having spent my last four transfers on Spurs and City players. I mentioned that the City defence were the best in the league last time I wrote and nothing has changed my opinion since.

If you want to know more about other, not-so-maverick Free Hit picks, as well as an in-depth discussion on Arsenal and the Manchester teams, do have a listen to this week’s episode of The FPL Wire (linked below). We’ll be doing another special episode this Saturday where we’ll be interviewing Ragabolly, who is the creator or LiveFPL, VirtualFPL and a new Fantasy planning tool – so look out for that, as well.

Good luck this Gameweek!

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

Then Coufal is an alternative but he recently missed minutes to Fredericks who helped keep a clean sheet vs Saints so is clearly an able deputy

I did this and had the same value built up in him but felt happy doing it, I had already gone through a few weeks where I wasn't so confident picking him with Chelsea's form and Cresswell's attacking form and fixtures were too hard to ignore. Zouma will likely decrease in price maybe even twice by the time the DGW will come around so if you wanted him back after you won't lose out on much imo

I'm losing both too, like said above Son is still well capable of delivering in any game but their fixtures are a bit hit and miss but more worrying for me is their form before the Leeds game (which I can't help but look at as an outlier)

Same dilema, currently have Watkins and was always going to bring in Antonio, but I am still uncertain. I hope Antonio plays in the FA cup to see if he is back and what minutes he gets but will wait till GW19 before making that move ( if I make that move )

Is 7 players enough to navigate the GW18 ? Think I am going to save my chips and role with 7 players for GW18? If talk of Leeds v Southampton is true then I will have 10 players but kind of messes with my bench boost plans for GW19 as was going to swap Button and Struijk for Meslier and 4.5m defender.

    Martinez,
    Dias, Stones,
    KDB(c), Grealish, Fernandes
    Watkins

Button, Robertson, Salah, Antonio, Bamford, Raphinha, Coufal, Struijk - 1.2M ITB

I have the same dilemma for GW19. I only have 1FT and need to sort out Balbuena so if I transfer out Kane it'll be a -8 to bring in Salah and not sure if it is worth it when BB.

    Martinez — Forster
Cancelo Stones Taylor — Dallas Coufal
Kdb Bruno Salah Son — Burke
    DCL Watkins Bamford

A: Taylor >> Holding and ship out one of DCL or Son next gw to get 11 dgw players
B: Salah >> Grealish with the view to upgrade Son >> Salah next gw.
C: Salah >> Rashford but need to raise 0.5m (how?) to upgrade Son >> Salah next gw. Possibly Taylor > Mitchell next gw
D: Take a 8 point hit in gw19 to upgrade forster and burke so i can BB19

Value does matter on a FH.

Picking Saka or Martinelli over Auba means your entire team gets 6m in upgrades. That is a significant amount. That could mean the difference between Wilson or Kane. Or more broadly whole upgrades in defense + Son.

I don't mind Sterling as much because the equivalents at City are much less consistent, but Auba is a straight up bad pick imo.

If you want differentials try these instead:

    Cavani
    Neto
    Foden
    Martinelli
    Richarlison
    Gundogan

This is some total partisan bullcrap.

If Rashford, Martial, Maguire & Pogba are 'bad', then 90% of the players in the PL may as well hang their boots up and go and sign on.
Secondly, if Utd are 'absolute pants' then it's quite incredible that they have only been bettered for points in the whole of the calander year 2020, and are of course set to be top of the league if they win their game in hand.

I would suggest your opinion on football is the actual thing that is 'absolute pants'

League table since Bruno joined... can you imagine how muchthe gap would be if they didn't have crap players like Rashford & Martial!

Team - Played - Points (Goal Difference)
      1. Mun - 30 - 65 (32)
      2. Liv - 31 - 62 (27)
      3. Mci - 29 - 59 (40)
      4. Tot - 30 - 54 (22)
      5. Che - 31 - 52 (17)

(Southampton, Arsenal, Everton, Wolves, Leicester complete the top 10 - in that order)

Liverpool would've struggled in 2014 without Suarez. That is what we're dealing with here.

There's a middle ground her lads

Rashford and martial are good but often poor, hit and miss and without Bruno weren't utd 14th or something?

Yep exactly, any comparison is relative

Rashford, Martial etc can be poor, ok, good, excellent - all at the same time depending on who they're being compared with

They can also be poor, ok, good, excellent from game to game etc

Unfortunately blanket statements that they are poor players without any comparator just look a little ridiculous - and blanket statements that they are "crap"... well, I don't think we need to go into detail about the problems there 🙂

It wasn't that long ago (2 seasons back?) that they finished 2nd in the league with most of these "crap" players, and without Bruno - so there was always the possibility of them reverting to that level, which they seem to have done over the last 30-ish games

Maybe a few more tweaks but this is pretty much my 18/19 plan.

      Any adjustments needed?

      GW18 Wildcard

      Martinez
      Cancelo - Maguire - Holding - Taylor
Rashford - De Bruyne - Sterling - Fernandes
      Wilson - Watkins

      GW19 Benchboost (Wilson + Taylor ---> Antonio + Dier/Bednarek)

      Martinez - Meslier
      Cancelo - Maguire - Holding - Bednarek - Dallas
Rashford - De Bruyne - Sterling - Fernandes - Soucek
      Antonio - Watkins - Bamford

Morning all, looking for some thoughts on my team....

      Meslier
      Cancelo Holding Mitchel
      Salah KDB Bruno Son
      DCL Bamford Adams

      Forster Chilwell Coufal Anguissa

      2ft 0.4itb

Planning to get 9/10 out in 18 and then possibly use TC in 19.

      Chilwell Adams to Dias Watkins?

Chilwell to Dias for sure. I personally wouldn't go for Watkins because I don't think he'll do anything against Tot, Eve and Mci.

Oh man, Lateriser recommending Aubameyang. I laughed out loud. Not in a rude way or anything, just found it funny.

Unfortunately even on a FH value DOES matter and Auba at 11.3m comes at the cost of NOT owning someone else within the premium pool, i.e. KDB, Sterling, Bruno, Son, Kane, Rashford, and arguably also Lacazette as he's quite expensive too. He is imo the worst pick of that lot and I probably wouldn't go near him even if we had the Fantasy Champions League limitless chip, which is an unlimited value free hit.

Auba isn’t someone to touch unless you’re ranked in the millions and are extremely desperate to make up ground

He's not for me I'd rather have KDB at that price tbh, even on a FH...

Easy to recommend these players as you come over as a genius if they come off but its all forgotten if they don’t.

Id suggest removing the achievements link in the twitter handle and being a bit more humble this season. Maybe a leaf out of Tom/Marks book would not go amiss.

This is even worse. His very play style is Maverick which is similar to go big or go bust. It is so evident from his articles and tips and more importantly past rank. He has been doing it for 7-8 seasons now and has only missed the top 10k by some distance once (and he absolutely smashes it when he gets his picks right consistently for a season as evident by the 3 top 200 finishes).
And literally who doesn't showcase what they have achieved if it has been consistent. Stop judging based on one season (which is not even HALF over, and very different from a normal season)

        2. Vlekz
            3 years, 3 months ago

You guys totally missing the point he is trying to make, auba is not a pick for someone in the the top 10k or probably the top 100k, it's for people looking to make some ground up. If 1 popular mid fails (probably sterling or kane, who people go for instead of auba) and auba fires a double digit, that's a lot of ground made up. If it doesn't work out you stay stuck like before. It's just 1 player for 1 week. How bad can it get?

I will likely go into 19 with Bamford Watkins Antonio. If the latter gets injured again I will likely go back to a 352 with Brewster fodder or a 442.
