The case for Aubameyang as part of a Free Hit squad in FPL Blank Gameweek 18

In his latest column, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser argues that deploying a Free Hit chip is the perfect time to awaken your inner maverick.

“A ship is always safe at the shore but that is not what it’s built for.” – Albert Einstein

Gameweek 18 is upon us and inadvertently, for a lot of you (but not me), it means that the Free Hit chip is about to be deployed.

Even the name tells us that this is a once-in-a-season, no-strings-attached, no-holds-barred, inner-voice-enabling chip! If you’re not channelling that inner instinct most weeks because this is ‘template season’ and are way too fearful of losing to the crowd, then this is the week to awaken your inner maverick. Put on your multi-coloured jacket and listen to yourself. Do it this one Gameweek – if you’re using the Free Hit, obviously. I insist!

Going with the theme of this introduction, I’m going to throw in a few not-so-template names in the hat that might seem ridiculous or not smart at first go, but I’ll build a case for them and leave the decision to you.

Also, I am writing this article before the Manchester cup derby so do not have any relevant information from that game at my disposal.

So the stage is set: enter Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m). I know, I know. Bukayo Saka (£5.3m) is literally mirroring his stats in the last few Gameweeks and costs six million less.

But when you’re looking at one stand-alone week, value doesn’t matter. So what case do I have for Aubameyang? In the last two Gameweeks, when he’s started with the in-form, rejuvenated Arsenal attackers, he is matching the stats of Saka and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m).

He’s registered 1.42 expected goals (xG) in his last two games, which is the same he managed in five full matches previously. His total of two big chances in the last two Gameweeks is also the same he managed in five full games previously.

All it takes is one game to click, to come back into form. All it takes is one poorly time Joel Ward (£4.3m) tackle in the penalty box for Aubameyang to hammer a penalty in the top-right corner. I mean, with 22 goals and a 24% conversion rate in both of his previous seasons, we know the class and the finishing ability of the man.

Arsenal are playing much better football right now, so much so that they are joint-top of the league (tied with Aston Villa) for shots in the box in the last four Gameweeks. If he’s going to get the chances, you’d fancy him to convert.

It comes down to the age-old argument of judging the data set of this terrible season that Arsenal have had or that of his previous six seasons, where he’s been one of Europe’s most lethal finishers.

Now if this was a long-term commitment, there’s no way I’d encourage getting into a more serious relationship with him. But he seems exciting enough for a fling, in my opinion. If you don’t do it, fair enough; I know there are ‘more right’ things to do on a Free Hit.

The next name I am going to throw in the ring is Luke Shaw (£4.8m). Yes, I’m recommending a player that has one Fantasy Premier League assist to his name in the last two seasons.

I’ll give you five reasons:

  • a) He’s not injured at the moment
  • b) He’s playing some really good football right now
  • c) He’s on some free-kicks and corners
  • d) No defender has created more chances than him in the last four Gameweeks
  • e) Burnley are bottom five in the league for shots in the box conceded in the last six Gameweeks

The third and final name that I’d like to throw into this hat is Raheem Sterling (£11.4m). I’m presuming most Free Hitters will triple up on Manchester City and while a double-up on defence might seem the right play long term (Joao Cancelo (£5.7m) needs to be one of them), for one Gameweek alone, I do like a Sterling punt.

He’s been in pretty good nick of late, registering six returns in as many games and clocking 90 minutes in all of them. When I’m looking at one-week punts, Sterling is one of those players that screams ‘brace potential’ to me. He did more than that last time he played his Gameweek 18 opponents, having scored a hat-trick at the Amex Stadium in 2019/20.

He’s second only to Jack Grealish (£7.7m) for expected assists (xA) in the last four Gameweeks and has four shots in the box in the same timeframe. Why I do like Sterling (and a City attacking double-up) in a fixture against Brighton is because the Seagulls will want to play their own game, rather than sit back. Like the Chelsea match, this will suit the press-resistant Manchester City attackers and offer them more space than they are generally used to.

For those that are not on the Free Hit, it seems like a good time to target assets from the Manchester teams as they play three matches in the next two Gameweeks and the fixtures are pretty decent from Gameweek 20, as well.

If you are still on the edge in terms of whether to Free Hit or not, one other factor I’d like you to consider is this: if you are using the Free Hit in Gameweek 18 and then spending transfers to get the same players from the Manchester teams next week, it might be worth holding onto the chip and then taking a hit or two to just bring the players in ahead of next Tuesday.

Remember it’s about the quality of the players you have and not the quantity.

Spurs v Fulham postponed as second Gameweek 16 fixture falls by the wayside

On a personal note, I’ve been climbing steadily and am currently ranked at 1.8 million in the world but can’t help but feel miffed at being on the wrong side of coronavirus-influenced rescheduling in Gameweek 16, having spent my last four transfers on Spurs and City players. I mentioned that the City defence were the best in the league last time I wrote and nothing has changed my opinion since.

If you want to know more about other, not-so-maverick Free Hit picks, as well as an in-depth discussion on Arsenal and the Manchester teams, do have a listen to this week’s episode of The FPL Wire (linked below). We’ll be doing another special episode this Saturday where we’ll be interviewing Ragabolly, who is the creator or LiveFPL, VirtualFPL and a new Fantasy planning tool – so look out for that, as well.

Good luck this Gameweek!

Cutrone recalled to Wolves, wonder if he'll go straight into the first team, guessing they've had trouble trying to sign a forward this window so maybe it makes most sense

Didn't really adjust first time around before he was loaned out, maybe having a better crack at it now with Jiminez out for a while might help him but 4 goals in 12 months with Fiorentina isn't inspiring

    Dias Maguire Holding (Justin, Dallas)
    Son KDB Bruno Saka (Harrison)
    Watkins (Vardy, Bamford)

Have 8 players for BGW18 (used my 1FT already), should I:

    A) Free hit
    B) take a -4/-8 hit to get 9/10 players
    C) Hold

It's pretty decent. I definitely wouldn't FH that anyway.

But if you could get Stones in for another hit (should pay off over 18 & 19) then you'll be looking stronger.

Worth doing Bissouma to Saka for gw18 only? Would mean I then sell Saka for Salah in gw19 for a -4. So basically if Saka even gets an assist I should cover the hit.

My defence would be Robbo, Stones, Coufal, Dallas, Dias/Cancelo so it seems Cancelo would be worth it, even if in future he gets rotated.

I'd be very unlucky to have both Stones and Cancelo rotated in the same week but then this is Pep we're speaking about!

I'd just bench Bednarek, Mitchell and Saka and not use BB. Don't think it is worth here as Saka is the only player you'd maybe want in your starting 11.

Came back too fast last time, got almost immediately injured in his first game back. So I think Pep is being super cautious this time. Kun is in his 30's now after all and has a career littered with injuries so probably for the best.

It's effectively no chance. I think there's a higher chance of Villa having a TGW in GW19 than this purely because logistically there's no time to reschedule it for GW18.

Southampton v Shrewsbury in the FA Cup could be postponed due to Covid (Shrewsbury's team). If the match is postponed (which isn't confirmed yet), and the FA do not award the match to Southampton (which may or may not happen), they could (or could not) rearrange the game the same midweek as Leeds v Southampton, meaning that game would be postponed. They could then rearrange that game for GW18, but seems unlikely as they have not hurriedly rearranged any other PL game that has been postponed involving two teams who are not in Europe as there are plenty of free European midweeks for these games to be rearranged to.

Yep it's very strong and could be an excellent GW (over non-FHers) if Arsenal win handsomely especially, as so few own them.

But, as a non-FHer, it's not filling me with fear and kind of validates the decision to not play FH or WC for myself.

There will inevitably be more COVID cases, and more fixture postponements over the coming months.
Therefore, more DGWs and BGWs down the line.
Is there a case for holding all your chips until the smoke clears a little?

I don't see how anyone can let these two GW's pass without playing ANY chips at all.

This BGW-DGW is prime for attacking for sure. But, anyone playing more than 2 chips is probably over-egging the pudding for sure.

In my opinion 1 chip is fine - providing your team is set up well. I'm playing TC in 19 and saving WC, FH & BB for later. Because, as you said, it could be a crazy year and there's very likely more upheaval to come yet.

I'm in two minds now, I initially said I'd consider BB in 19 but with all the uncertainty and outbreaks, rotation and risk of injuries due to busy scheduling said I'd leave it. I have 9 (+ Brewster) for the BGW thanks to the MU v Burnley rescheduled fixture so I don't feel I need the FH so I figured I'd go without either.

But I used the new LiveFPL tool to see how I'd look if my plans go ahead without issue towards DGW19 and if everything went ahead as normal I'd have a pretty darn good BB team, and my decision to move Kane to Ings instead of Vardy (for a couple of weeks at least) means I can even upgrade Brewster too. I still feel like it might not be the right time but if I get to shortly before the DGW19 deadline and my team still looks good I can't say I won't heavily consider it.

Grealish better option than Rash for gw18/19 despite being on 4 yc?

Would allow me to have Ings instead of Rodrigo/Adams

Rashford hasn't blanked away from home yet this season, but Grealish is still always a good option especially if Barkley is back but the YC situation is a problem. But Ings over either of those other two is a nice upgrade

Freehitting in BGW18, undecided on which chip to play for DGW19. Was all set on Salah(TC), not so sure now. Having wildcarded mostly a DGW bench and switched KdB to Mane on wildcard as an edge on Salah triplers I find myself 0.1 short of a playing bench keeper for a potential full XV. The fixture switch has done me!

      McCarthy
      Konsa KWP Coufal
      Salah Mane Bruno Soucek
      KANE DCL Bamford

      Button Romeu Alisoki Pieters

      0.4m

      Essentially;

      Mane & non-playing keeper
      v
      KdB & two keepers (-4)

      Or

      TC someone?

Not trying to start any scaremongering on here, but given the amount of games KDB has played recently, wouldn't there be a risk of him missing out on any of the upcoming 3 PL games? I know he is their best player and as a professional athlete he should be able to play as much as he does. Do you think he may be rested either vs Brighton in 18 or in any of the 2 games in 19?

He'll get his rest at the weekend and then I'd expect him to start all PL games until they've at least caught up with 'pool

Makes sense. I also am not convinced that they will rest their best player in a PL game given that they are behind in the title race

Pep pretty much said they can't rest him a few weeks back. I can't see that has changed until they've got themselves right back in the mix

Think the follwoing are pretty nailed when fit now in Pep's eyes

              Ederson
Dias Stones Cancelo (LB or RB)
              KDB Rodrigo
              Sterling

I don't feel Cancelo is nailed if everyone is fit, though he gets healthy minutes and Stones is a few bad performances away from being dropped whereas the other nailed ones wouldn't be dropped for bad performances

I agree about Auba and Shaw. With Sterling, the problem this week is different. That last premium slot in the FH team would be either for Sterling or for Kane. Sterling a great differential, but there is the fear that if he blanks and Kane hauls some non-FH teams that naturally have Kane + Son would potentially score more points than your FH team.

I don’t think Liverpool will finish top 4 this season. They’re being stubborn and not signing a defender; their attack has fallen off a cliff since Salah’s interview with Marca.

I’m going with no LFC players going forward. I’m a fan of the club, but I can see only gloom.

I wouldn't go that far. Definitely would be a real struggle to keep the title but I think they will either finish top or second. Salah is still very much in my future plans

It's a sticky period for sure, will be interesting to see how they come through it. Salah hasn't looked anything like he did during the past 2 seasons despite his goal involvements, and even Mane has been pretty poor lately (I've always felt he could be pretty wasteful but he's just not looked great on the ball for a few weeks if you ignore the Palace game). But I can't see them dropping that far away.

Burnley conceded 3 goals in December (6 matches). Is Fernandes as captain a bad choice? Seems like KDB is a much better option with a poor Brighton defence, and City scoring 15 goals against them the past two PL seasons.

City tend to do very well against Brighton, they've scored 13 in total in their last 3 PL games against them. Add to that the fact that Brighton always try and attack everyone they play then I'd say has to be KDB
