Arsenal and Man United’s FPL assets performing well in Football Index

Sponsored by Football Index

It’s been a mad season, results-wise, thus far, and the upcoming Premier League fixtures are not likely to calm anything down.

But as with any (relatively) chaotic event, a bit of preparation can lead to some major dividends. And in the case of Football Index, we mean that literally.

Football Index is a kind of stock market where people use real money to bet on football.

You buy shares in individual players whose value can rise or fall depending on their performance both on and off the field.

GET STARTED WITH FOOTBALL INDEX TODAY

I’m actively using Football Index this season with more than a nod to FPL, seeing which aspects of each game marry up, and which don’t.

FI Traders, just like FPL managers, will be planning feverishly for the next two rounds of matches.

The first, FPL Gameweek 18, is a reduced set of fixtures involving just 12 teams, which will be followed by a bumper Double Gameweek 19 during which another 12 sides will play twice.

Back To The Future

To help us navigate all of that, a look back at how certain players performed during the festive period is instructive.

First up, FI’s Star Player from the January 2nd fixtures – Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

The defender racked up 18 points in FPL – the highest total of Gameweek 17 – and he was suitably lauded in FI as well, with his Match Day Dividends from the 4-0 win at West Brom boosted by a Media Dividend win the next day.

Tierney has really blossomed on FI through the Christmas period, with his price up from £0.54 per share on December 20th to a peak of £1.11 on January 4th.

Arsenal are one of those sides with a Gameweek 17 fixture, home to a Crystal Palace side that’s struggled for goals on the road this season. If we consider their 5-1 win at West Brom as an outlier, Roy Hodgson’s men have just six goals from their seven other away games.

They’ve also blanked in four of them, raising the prospects of defensive returns to add to Tierney’s recent improved attacking threat.

Double Delights

What Arsenal don’t have are two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19.

Some great prospects do, however.

Chief among them, as ever, is this season’s stand-out Premier League performer in FI, Bruno Fernandes.

We’ve written plenty about the Man United midfielder’s stellar FI work recently, but his consistency needs restating.

He’s averaged more Match Day points than any other player in the league over both the last four weeks and the last three months.

And for those hesitant to buy shares in a player with a hefty share price of around £8.00, his upcoming schedule suggests more price rises are on the way.

United play three times over the next two rounds of fixtures, all of them away. That suits both the player and the side down to the ground – Fernandes has blanked in just one away game since his move to England a year ago.

Which FPL players have performed well in Football Index over the last year?

Burnley, Fulham and Liverpool await, with the latter the obviously tricky encounter.

Across town, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is turning heads.

Playing in a more advanced role of late, the Germany international has three goals from his last four starts, bringing in a Star Player award on Boxing Day and a Match Day score average second only to Fernandes among Premier League players over the last month.

Down to £0.49 a share on Christmas Eve, he’s now available for about £0.70. That’s a price that could keep on moving up if he continues to shine across City’s next three fixtures – Brighton, Palace and Aston Villa, all at home.

It’s also worth a glance at Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, who has more top five Match Day ranks than any other  Premier League player over the last month.

Priced at £1.38 in late November, the left-back will now set you back around £2.60 a share, with a Double Gameweek 19 involving that United match-up and Burnley, both at Anfield, to come.

For anyone on a WC (yes I gambled on setting up for 18/19 early) I am interested on the way to tackle it. In my opinion (I know people love that phrase):

3 City - try to cover both weeks and long term
3 United - try to cover both weeks and long term
Least 2 West Ham as they have a good fixture run for a bit
Least 2 Leeds - decent double, ok fixtures
Least 2 Arsenal - best next 2 fixtures, good form

It then becomes a question of how many is enough for GW18 to allow an attack on the doubles. This question was answered by Villa players but sadly not anymore. Getting a rearranged Leeds or Spurs fixture into 18 is now looking remote...

...Wilson is also a decent shout as he can play then be FT'd out to another fit 6.x doubler.

So personally I will try to field 11 for 18. I don't think it makes sense to field 10 in 18 in order to have an extra double in 19 - you end up with the same number of fixtures.

I have also thought about the Wilson transfer idea, but I am not sure planning transfers is a good idea right now - plus he has Leeds in 20. It's easier if you plan not to BB in 19, which seems high risk given the current circumstances, though it was my original plan.

City and United have to be the spine, and agree Arsenal in the next 2 could outscore most with doubles.

All of this said, I have paused my planning until Mon/Tues when we have more fixture clarity.

On wc myself and have taken a break from the planning, I think when I come back to it if villa miss a game it might be a case of finding a way to get Grealish to Rashford, if the villa game is off it’s tough for us

It's tough because you'd want them back given how many fixtures to come - could even be worth just benching Grealish, and I'm not selling Martinez having had him since week 2. But at the same time anywhere I'd love to be able to punt on Rash.

I would scrap the GW19 BB idea if you're on WC in 18. I'm already starting to wean off that idea due to how many random cancellations have popped up lately. BB26 seems like it would be better and the league will have either been canceled by then due to rampant cases or completely stabilized which would make for a better BB opportunity.

This is what I’m looking at right now, have to accept that activating the wc may not have been the best decision but use this chance to set up strongly across the board for the foreseeable

Personally didn’t have any city and only 1 United player so could still work out to be a good move

Same. Using FH still leaves no City if you had none going ibn and the way they look now swayed me to early WC

Agree with this. The biggest threat we have as FPL managers at the moment is non appearances. In a normal gameweek we have a bench to come in, on a bench boost non appearances have no contingency unfortunately. We could well see teams go from having a double to having no games at all.

Yep...BB is off the menu but still want to get a fair amount of doublers in. Key question will be how many points we think those decent sgwers from Arsenal/Spurs/Wolves can get in 19. Only issue with BB26 is Europe possible rotation but so be it.

As a very very rough draft:
          Leno - Messier
          AWB Dias Cancelo Coufal Tierney
          Rashford Bruno KDB Soucek Neto
          Wilson Bamford Antonio

...gets 9 starters in gw18 and 11 dgwers in 19. The Arsenal and Wolves outfielders have 2 decent home fixtures so they may stay for 19. Wilson maybe to Adams but not an ideal move.

That looks rather bench-boosty. It's too heavy on bench imo for a WC without the intention to BB in 19.

Stuck in :Laca for Antonio and that is actually 11 starters for gw18.

    Dias Cancelo Kilman Mitchel

My dilemma too. I've 12 players if they play, otherwise 8 :-

      Ederson
      Maguire, Saiss, Stones, Lowton
      KDB, Bruno, Saka

I think I'll save my FH unless we hear of more cancellations

My initial thoughts are that I'm just going to try and get through 18 without chips, even if Spurs v Villa is off. Whatever happens, it's only one week of the season and many others will have left their team as is... so hopefully won't be too big a red arrow.

      I'll have...

      Cancelo - Mitchell - Holding
      KDB - Bruno - Sterling
      .....Brewster

Awful (especially the lone striker 🙁 )

The state of our teams is pretty similar for this gameweek.
Its the Free Hitters we have to worry about mainly. They will will own the differentials like Sterling, Rashford, Laca/Auba.
Otherwise im also tempted to save it for later as I can see more blanks and doubles causing chaos.

Obviously safety is paramount, but the fixture pile up Spurs are going to face later on in the season is also unfair if they continue to progress in the cups.

I guarantee there won't be any sympathy to their situation when the time comes when they have to play something like 8 games in 17 days.

I'm gunna TC KDB, and perhaps a City game will get postponed, hell, maybe both will. But Covid isn't going anywhere for a while (until well after the season is done and dusted), so it's just an occupational hazard now.

Madness that Villa did not play Burnley in week one. Gave them both an extra fixture pile-up for no reason.

Man City v Villa and Man U v Burnley were the postponed games due to European games from last season and the Manchester clubs needing a minimum 3 week break.

Yeah. Baines is saying they could've just made Villa and Burnley play each other at that point (as they had no reason for a further break) just to get the fixture out the way. Would leave just a Man derby to rearrange, rather than 2 games.

Why can Villa play Liverpool but Spurs game is in doubt?
There is a feeling among Premier League clubs that there would be an issue with the integrity of the competition if Villa were forced to field a side of youth-team players against Spurs on Wednesday.

In the PL it isn’t allowed to even field a weaker team. Managers get in big trouble over it. Whereas with cups you can just stick out whatever side you want, alluding to it be by definition less important.

To be honest, in the Cup, a lot of the Prem sides play their U23'S anyway. So, if the U23's are Covid free then it makes a lot of sense to just get the game out of the way.

If they were then forced to do that in the Prem (where maybe one or two of the U23's might just get a place on the bench), then it would be massively unfair - especially considering Newcastle, City & Fulham have all been given a postponement due to Covid.

Is Gundogan a waste of Man City asset?
Has his role in team changed in recent weeks as seems to be getting into the box a lot more? (seem to remember him getting goals when first at City).
I still think better assets but he's very cheap and as nailed as most others.

Seems to have more of a license to get forward at moment. He also seems to know what he's doing when playing more offensively, he takes up good positions and good finisher. With Fernandinho knocking on I think he's pretty nailed(prob still more than Foden).

Assuming Tot vs Villa is off and Tot vs Ful is scheduled instead, would you FH this or save the chip for later? Will have 8 starters but that includes Taylor/Burke so effectively only 6. have 2FTs and 0m itb

Taylor, Stones, Cancelo -- Dallas Coufal
KDB, Bruno, Son, Burke -- Salah
    DCL --- Bamford Watkins

    A: FH18 and get 11 out in 19 with 1 hit
B: Salah + Watkins >> Rashford + Lacazette. but would mean taking 2 hits in gw19 to get 11 doublers

I think the Covid situation will improve with the weather. As it gets hotter, we go out more and out vitamin D levels increase, we get fresh air and generally people's immune system picks up.

On the grand scheme of things - your season will NOT be crucially affected by Arsenal picks.

Your GW18 will be crucially affected, for sure. But Arsenal will probably win 1-0 / 2-1 and the Arsenal players you have will score a handful of points. Nice if you have them, not the end of the world if you don't. No biggie!

My season was probably more affected by Son to Bruno in GW2. Would of kept Son after his 4 goals and the rest is history (bad rank history).

Yeah... It's the decisions you make early on that have a big butterfly effect on future ones.

Picking Rashford over Bruno in GW6 cost me 50+ points I worked out. And for one week gaffes, Son > Mahrez in GW4 with the non-existent hamstring injury cost me a further 30 or so once you add up the knock-on effect of the extra hits I had to take to get Son back and the players I couldn't get due to further hits.

                  Painful.

I was on the right track with the bulk of my preseason homework but didn't follow-through correctly. Frustrating. Next season, I'm gonna wildcard early again, but not make as many early transfers and stick to my preseason homework.

Similar here. Talked up Jose second season effect in preseason but ditched Son hours before GW1. 50-70 points lost there, also led to me WCing GW3 and removing Vardy before his 17 pointer away at City. Brutal!

He did well under Moyes last time and not sure they can rely on Antonio's fitness

If(!) Spurs v Villa gets replaced by Spurs v Fulham is 7 players enough for gw18 after 2ft? Really would not want to use FH

                    It's not gunna happen.

And you know how I know it won't happen?

Because that would be too good to be true, and life is just not like that 😉

If it won't happen I'll only have 5 players for gw18 after 2ft. Hoping for the best that I won't get cancelled!

Oh don’t worry! Loads of us screwed if that game is off. My team in 18 will be a shambles

I keep reading this piece of wishful thinking. It only gives Fulham 2 days rest before their Friday fixture with Chelsea. It won't happen.
