Value midfielder Pereira improving in new central role for West Brom

West Ham 2-1 West Brom

  • Goals: Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m), Michail Antonio (£6.3m) | Matheus Pereira (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.5m) | Kamil Grosicki (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Antonio x3, M Pereira x2, Coufal x1

THE BAGGIES BAG

Matheus Pereira (£5.6m) is quietly building Fantasy Premier League appeal again as he scored in West Bromwich Albion’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Tuesday evening.

It was the midfielder’s third strike in two matches and a fourth attacking return since Sam Allardyce arrived at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 14 – more than any colleague.

Crucially, it has made for excellent value for money too. Costing just £5.6m, Pereira’s score during the new manager’s reign working out at 5.5 points per million spent.

Pereira’s new central role has played a pivotal part in that upturn in fortunes, which has helped West Brom score four goals in their last two.

The Brazilian was deployed on the flanks for much of Slaven Bilic’s time in charge of West Brom this season but Allardyce has allowed him to play number 10 in each of the last three matches – which has yielded three goals for the midfielder.

Despite the 24-point score recorded in Double Gameweek 19, Pereira may have to be someone Fantasy managers keep only on their radar for now.

West Brom face Manchester City (home), Spurs (away) and Manchester United (home) between now and Gameweek 24.

Still, Gameweek 21 and 22 meetings with Fulham (home) and Sheffield United (away) offer some short-term appeal.

CELEBRATION

Michail Antonio (£6.3m) looks set to offer similar consistent form Fantasy managers witnessed during Project Restart.

On Tuesday night, he started back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time since Gameweek 6 and, despite still only working his way back to full fitness, already has two goals in two.

As we mentioned in our match report for the win over Burnley, Antonio’s knack of getting on the end of balls in and around the six-yard box is the true key to his appeal.

And it was exactly the story against West Brom, as he hooked a flying leg on the end of an Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.5m) knock-down in the second half.

Perhaps mildly ominous for owners and non-owners alike, is the fact that David Moyes insisted post-match that Antonio is still not back to his best.

The fact that the West Ham manager replaced him with Mark Noble (£4.6m) in the 84th minute suggests there is still game-time management required following his long lay-off.

That said, Sebastien Haller‘s (£6.1m) sale to Ajax is a continuing reminder that, at the very least, he is ready to start games consistently, if not finish them.

Meanwhile, anyone not in possession of Antonio might be somewhat concerned to see him score 18 points in Double Gameweek 19 only for his manager to imply there are remaining gears for him to cycle up through.

“He was excellent, his goal was great, but he is still not at full tilt. We are asking a lot from him and he is turning into a ruthless striker.” – David Moyes

VLAD THE IMPALER

West Ham’s run of defensive form was brought to an end by West Brom on Tuesday night.

Pereira’s second-half strike was the first Premier League goal the Hammers had conceded with Craig Dawson (£4.5m) in the side.

With Crystal Palace (away), Fulham (away) and Sheffield United (home) three of the next five opponents, there is certainly very little to worry owners of West Ham’s defensive assets from Double Gameweek 19.

The former Watford man looks closer and closer to squeezing his way into Fantasy consideration not least just because of his price but because he finally started offering threat against West Brom.

Dawson managed to find space on the back post to nod an Aaron Cresswell (£5.4m) corner towards Sam Johnstone‘s (£4.5m) goal in the first half, nodding just wide when he should have scored.

While Cresswell managed just two points on Tuesday night, his owners can still look forward to a period of strong potential for the left-back.

Of his six assists this season, five of them have come away from home and West Ham face road trips, to Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Fulham, in three of the next four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) continues to be the more useful of West Ham’s full-backs at the London Stadium.

His assist for Jarrod Bowen‘s (£6.3m) opening goal was his third at home this season, the most of any West Ham defender in 2020/21.

The right-back even went close to his first Premier League goal in the first half, popping up in the box and watching his shot deflected wide for a corner.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Dawson, Coufal; Rice, Soucek; Benrahma (Yarmolenko 62′), Lanzini (Fornals 62′), Bowen; Antonio (Noble 84′).

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-4-1-1): Johnstone; Gibbs, Bartley, Ajayi, O’Shea; Grosicki (Furlong 70′), Sawyers, Livermore (Robson-Kanu 80′), Gallagher; M Pereira; C Robinson.

    Martinez
    Cancelo RJames Coufal
    Salah Bruno Grealish Son
    Vardy Antonio Bamford

    Dallas Mitchell Bissouma

    1 FT 0.6 ITB.

Got a lot of ground to make up now so differentials could be the way forward.. However Dallas to Stones is boring but tempting.

Any suggestions are much appreciated after a depressing DGW for me so far

I would consider a hit to bring in a city defender and attacker, if you really want a differential then could go sterling

Don’t really think you can go into these next 3 without any city players

I like the idea of bringing Stones and ESR in. Double city defence could reap the rewards for the next few weeks. ESR could be the best value buy for the second half of the season.

I’m bringing him in next week probably but rolling my FT in case we hear of any doubles. I think you could do the same with that team.

See how Bruno gets on tonight but that could be a good move.

He’s been so consistent this season but does look tired and Pogba may be affecting his output.

I haven’t had him all season and I’m doing OK.

Can't figure out what way of trying to get Maddison in is best. Unless it seems like he's unfit I'm thinking of doing Vardy to Ings but then I need to decide who out of El Ghazi or Gundogan to move to fit in Maddison and honestly I don't fancy losing either with their fixtures and form (El Ghazi would make more sense of the two as he's probably the more likely to be dropped but if he plays both games this week it'll make me suspect that won't happen much). Then there's the option of Salah, I'll have to see how Pool look tomorrow night but it's not like their fixture list looks great anyway and I'd just be leaving the spare money itb to allow me to move him back in whenever they begin to pick up form again if it doesn't happen against Burnley.

Stones & Justin are 35 points.

Subtract 1-2 of those and people will be on a more even playing field.

There will still be players like Antonio, Maddison etc who have done well but are lower owned.

Worth considering. Soucek does seem to sit deeper with Antonio in the team. He could have had a few extra points in last night's games, but tricky to tell if he's going to offer as consistent a threat as ESR.

Imo it’s not tricky, positionally I mean. ESR is playing as a free roaming attacking midfielder, and alternatively, Soucek is tasked with defensive duties.

I got in on ESR this week to bring in KdB (c). 4 assist in 5 matches (all starts). Plus he is consistently subbed before full time indicating his continuance of starts.

        I think he’s worth a shot

This, even though son, kane often score/assist once for me they don’t seem essential, only based off when I’ve seen them play on tv, where they get one and then don’t attack much beyond that.

Don’t think they are that bad no, and I held Son + Kane through their last “bad run”. That being said personally I dropped Son to afford KdB for the double and feel spreading the value to more teams is the way forward, as much as I’d love to keep Son I prefer Kane with penalty duty.

It was for me BB and a - 8
or just roll with my team (dallas, bamford, martinez in first 11).

So I did BB, but only got dallas, bamford, adams + martinez to go.
You can say its bad, but my - 8 transfers in were
Smeichel, antonio and Stones for forster, dcl and mitchell.

So safe to say it was a huge succes!

            Hows yours?

Wow the three players you got in went huge!

I had two FTs myself & did a -8 too replacing Son, Kane, Tierney, and Neto with Salah, Antonio, Chilwell, and Maddison.

Sitting on 101 points & 10 games left so happy days 😀

Much to look forward too then! Nice call with Maddison as well.
And great ranking. Congrats and good luck for the rest of the gw!

Stones Coufal Dallas based off fixtures but seems stupid to leave two of the most expensive defenders in the game on the bench

Yeah thats the issue. Based on value and ownership, robbo and chilwell almost need to play.

This is the main reason I didnt use BB so early in the season. When you use it in one of the last GWs its much easier to plan who you will play and bech the following GWs after BB.

I agree at the end is better.
But my team was set up ideally and no more FH so was the best time.
Just afraid I will leave more points on the bench next gw than this!

    Bruno KDB Son Rashford Raphinha
    Vardy Bamford Brewster

Worth planning to get Salah back in for gw21? Or better premium options given their form?

Very frustrating to see 6 Leicester defenders and midfielders as top scorers so far this week and Vardy only getting 4 points. What were the chances of tie lemons, Barnes and Maddison ALL massively out scoring him. At least I had Justin. 99 points with 5 left to play including TC KDB again tonight. Still big opportunities for my rank increase this week to drop back with no villa players and only Salah and Bruno from pool and Utd.

Another example of random variance ruining the game. If you pick an attacker from a team that scores 4 goals you should be given 6 points or so to even it out because you made a good pick on paper

99 with a TC KDB still to play is no situation to be complaining from. Could easily be smashing past 150 points later today. Best of luck.

Sick of Vardy, getting rid! there's better Leicester assets anyway - he's taking all my money!

But 3 of next 4 are away where he tends to do better and the other game is vs Leeds who have done terribly vs the bigger sides

Antonio handing me a red arrow as it stands...Assisted by Justin..
I would have done Wood to Antonio for a hit if not for Martin blocking the 3rd WHU slot!!

Hoping for a KDB cap haul!!

This is another lesson learnt this season. Don't buy two goalies from the same team and make your fodder keeper be someone from a dud team like Palace or Burnley.

Lots of team ruined by having Steer or in your case Martine preventing them from getting the likes of Grealish or Antonio.

absolutely in hindsight, but don't think many would have ever thought about owning 3 Villa especially not for prolonged periods

In order to get kane i need to make the following changes over next 3 weeks....
      out: davis (bench), son, robbo
in: kane, smith-rowe (bench), mitchell (bench)
      is it worth it?

No, I think Son is better value than Kane so getting rid of him to get Kane in is a backward move IMO!

No, just hold Son instead I think

I'd say those transfers are one big downgrade, one small upgrade and Son to Kane which i think is just sideways.

      Mendy - Button
      Robertson - Cancelo - Stones - Coufal - Mitchell
      Mane - KDB - Fernandes - Soucek - 4.3M
      Vardy - Antonio - Davis

One more week will also give you more chance to evaluate Barnes vs Maddi and i don't think either will get too much vs EVE.

Also looking at Soucek one more week before a Lei mid. But I’m also finding it hard not to include ESR as a feasible 4th mid option
