Value midfielder Pereira improving in new central role for West Brom

West Ham 2-1 West Brom

  • Goals: Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m), Michail Antonio (£6.3m) | Matheus Pereira (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m), Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.5m) | Kamil Grosicki (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Antonio x3, M Pereira x2, Coufal x1

THE BAGGIES BAG

Matheus Pereira (£5.6m) is quietly building Fantasy Premier League appeal again as he scored in West Bromwich Albion’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Tuesday evening.

It was the midfielder’s third strike in two matches and a fourth attacking return since Sam Allardyce arrived at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 14 – more than any colleague.

Crucially, it has made for excellent value for money too. Costing just £5.6m, Pereira’s score during the new manager’s reign working out at 5.5 points per million spent.

Pereira’s new central role has played a pivotal part in that upturn in fortunes, which has helped West Brom score four goals in their last two.

The Brazilian was deployed on the flanks for much of Slaven Bilic’s time in charge of West Brom this season but Allardyce has allowed him to play number 10 in each of the last three matches – which has yielded three goals for the midfielder.

Despite the 24-point score recorded in Double Gameweek 19, Pereira may have to be someone Fantasy managers keep only on their radar for now.

West Brom face Manchester City (home), Spurs (away) and Manchester United (home) between now and Gameweek 24.

Still, Gameweek 21 and 22 meetings with Fulham (home) and Sheffield United (away) offer some short-term appeal.

CELEBRATION

Michail Antonio (£6.3m) looks set to offer similar consistent form Fantasy managers witnessed during Project Restart.

On Tuesday night, he started back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time since Gameweek 6 and, despite still only working his way back to full fitness, already has two goals in two.

As we mentioned in our match report for the win over Burnley, Antonio’s knack of getting on the end of balls in and around the six-yard box is the true key to his appeal.

And it was exactly the story against West Brom, as he hooked a flying leg on the end of an Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.5m) knock-down in the second half.

Perhaps mildly ominous for owners and non-owners alike, is the fact that David Moyes insisted post-match that Antonio is still not back to his best.

The fact that the West Ham manager replaced him with Mark Noble (£4.6m) in the 84th minute suggests there is still game-time management required following his long lay-off.

That said, Sebastien Haller‘s (£6.1m) sale to Ajax is a continuing reminder that, at the very least, he is ready to start games consistently, if not finish them.

Meanwhile, anyone not in possession of Antonio might be somewhat concerned to see him score 18 points in Double Gameweek 19 only for his manager to imply there are remaining gears for him to cycle up through.

“He was excellent, his goal was great, but he is still not at full tilt. We are asking a lot from him and he is turning into a ruthless striker.” – David Moyes

VLAD THE IMPALER

West Ham’s run of defensive form was brought to an end by West Brom on Tuesday night.

Pereira’s second-half strike was the first Premier League goal the Hammers had conceded with Craig Dawson (£4.5m) in the side.

With Crystal Palace (away), Fulham (away) and Sheffield United (home) three of the next five opponents, there is certainly very little to worry owners of West Ham’s defensive assets from Double Gameweek 19.

The former Watford man looks closer and closer to squeezing his way into Fantasy consideration not least just because of his price but because he finally started offering threat against West Brom.

Dawson managed to find space on the back post to nod an Aaron Cresswell (£5.4m) corner towards Sam Johnstone‘s (£4.5m) goal in the first half, nodding just wide when he should have scored.

While Cresswell managed just two points on Tuesday night, his owners can still look forward to a period of strong potential for the left-back.

Of his six assists this season, five of them have come away from home and West Ham face road trips, to Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Fulham, in three of the next four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) continues to be the more useful of West Ham’s full-backs at the London Stadium.

His assist for Jarrod Bowen‘s (£6.3m) opening goal was his third at home this season, the most of any West Ham defender in 2020/21.

The right-back even went close to his first Premier League goal in the first half, popping up in the box and watching his shot deflected wide for a corner.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Dawson, Coufal; Rice, Soucek; Benrahma (Yarmolenko 62′), Lanzini (Fornals 62′), Bowen; Antonio (Noble 84′).

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-4-1-1): Johnstone; Gibbs, Bartley, Ajayi, O’Shea; Grosicki (Furlong 70′), Sawyers, Livermore (Robson-Kanu 80′), Gallagher; M Pereira; C Robinson.

think this stemmed from him taking a kick in the game? early sub looks to just have been preservation for tonight as they were cruising.

probably only worth subbing him if you find yourself with 2ft and nothing pressing. Keep until 2nd WC as he often gets best scores in worst lookin fixtures

Unfortunately, I haven’t managed to watch the last few W Ham games...

I’m interested to know... how has Soucek been playing? (Didn’t have a shot in 1st game of DGW!).

Has his role in the team changed? Is the way that WHam play with Antonio not suited to Soucek’s game? (I.e Keep the ball on the ground now with more through balls, less crosses into the box)

    1. JBG
      • 5 Years

He is still getting in the box, but since Antonio is back and he's a more natural goalscorer, the ball is more than often aimed at him, it seems. From what I saw the last 2 matches(small sample I know, but all we have for now.)

Soucek seems to be one of those players you cant target fixtures as will be from set piece or ariving late.

May move him to ESR to help fund Kane shortly, othwise plenty of cheap attacking punts to look at sub £6m (Saka, El Ghazi, Gundo)

You target teams with weak set piece defences. After seeing Palace last week I'm definitely playing him.

    4. Trane84
      • 11 Years

He's not getting involved in many attacks from what I've seen, Rice and Soucek have been sitting deep with Bowen, Benrahma and Lanzini/Fornals ahead of them (and obviously Antonio up top).

He seemed to be more productive when Noble was playing instead of one of the attacking mids.

      1. ZimZalabim
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

It wasn't Noble that was playing it was 3 at the back system with Cresswell as the third CB and Masuaku at Lwb.

That has been one big change as a third attacking mid in front of Rice and Soucek and less security at the back.
Also a couple of his goals have been very late in games when west ham have been pumping balls into the box and he's scored with his feet rather than his head at the back post.

His threat hasn't changed that much tbh at set pieces and late in games when they need a goal he will be in the box but otherwise if they are protecting a lead he will sit back obviously.

Thats the biggest change with Antonio, he will score far more than Haller and they wont need to throw Soucek as an auxiliary striker for the final ten mins.

    5. FPLHaggis
      • 9 Years

He was still getting into the box as much as play allowed, ball just didn't fall for him this time.

I think with him, you either need to lock him into your XI, or get off completely if you're tempted elsewhere. He will still score at his rate, 3 goals per 13 games.

Just did a Gundogan vs Sterling comparison over the past 6 weeks and it's pretty insane.

Basically Gundogan >>> Sterling. He's beating him across the board even on xG and goal attempts. Gundo is quite likely the 2nd best City attacker to buy atm. Cheap too.

Could be a nice differential/enabler if you want to go for something like: Salah, Fernandes, Kane, Son and then you pick up Gundo as City cover.

I really like the look of him, but for me I'd want him alongside KDB not instead of.
      Toss up between:
      Dallas to Stones
Raphina to Gundogan - that just seems the more exciting move!

Yeah you're probably right to have Gundo + KdB rather than instead of.

But he's a really good prospect if he keeps playing in the position he has done for the last few weeks. The price is deceptive and he could even be the biggest bargain in the game.

Exactly what I have been thinking and will most probably do. Have the exact funds for Soucek to Gondogan for a Salah, KDB, Bruno, Son, Gundo midfield.

Agree on Gundo. The key one is whether he covers KDB though I think, as having 2x City defenders looks the way to go still (and City defence EO is creeping towards 100%+).

    4. Karan14

Good option but not better than 2 x City def & KDB for the time being.

Yeah the City defense is just that good. But I will start to think about KdB > Gundo if all the other premiums prove indispensable. I need to drop one of Salah, Bruno, KdB in order to get double Spurs by GW23.

        1. Karan14
          • 7 Years

Yeah thats my plan too and currently the fall guy will be Salah looking at the fixtures.
Also have to consider that City are more than likely to have DGWs in 24/26/ so not sure id want to sell KDB before that.

      Defintely Stones over Gundo IMO.

City DF is just insanely good right now (obviously I don't think to get him for his 'goalscoring prowess') and I think in the medium term he's more nailed on than Gundo

I already have Stones and KdB. I'm just tossing up now whether that 3rd slot should be Gundo or Cancelo.

I've had Dias, KDB and Gundo for a couple of weeks now and it has worked a treat. Will probably have to lose him when their fixtures turn (plus I'm looking at getting in Zaha ahead of their games against Newcastle and Leeds) but he's looked excellent since he's started playing this more advanced role

Yes seems like the answer is KDB, defender and then its either second def or Gundo

If Cancelo looks like he will have more rotation coming his way then something like Soucek/Cancelo > Reguilon/Gundo looks good in a couple of weeks

I just did a Stones vs Salah comparison in the goalscoring department in the last 4 games. Apparently Stones is a much better attacking asset with 3 goals (including the cup game) against 0.

Unlike you I'm looking at actual attacking stats... Not just outcomes.

xG and goal attempts is different to goals scored.

And Gundo has better xG, goal attempts and xA than Sterling even per 90. That's the key detail which indicates Gundo isn't just a flash in the pan.

Unlike say Maddison who has 3 goals from 0.50xG or something similar which is unsustainable.

I only have Dias (doubled up in MF instead) but am planning on keeping him probably for the season unless City somehow begin defending as bad as they did for a lot of last season, but are any of you with doubles keeping both or getting rid of both?

Although I have just one city defender but I see at least three potential clean sheets there.

I'll consider a downgrade, but most likely just keep.

City have already kept out Man Utd recently and I think their new found solidity will see them get plenty of cleanies through that run of games

They are very like to have 2 double gameweeks in GW24 & 26 too so im not too bothered.

got Stones for £5m as second City def and happy to bench him for a few of the games, always a chance of a CS and he's now prime Drogba in the opposition box

        Very much this.

If he's injured, he's injured. No good resting him for the FA cup and playing him with a dicky ankle v's Villa

Worth buying Justin? I always keep thinking he'll be replaced with pereira but never seems to happen!

I honestly have no idea. He's playing really well and you'd think he can't be dropped in this form and when Leic are doing so well.

But, there's 3 very good full backs at Leic now - so there's always a chance he plays 2 out of every 3 games or something like that.

      I think he's a clear 'don't buy, don't sell' right now.

He has the advantage of being able to play either side or in a back 3 with Pereira, but probably not a buy right now.

Very impressed with him this season, a defence of Fofana, Soy & Justin with Castagne/Pereira Wing backs would be phenomenal

      1. thegaffer82

He won't be as attractive if he's part of a back 3 though that's for sure.

He's really attacking when he plays WB, which is half the appeal of him really

        1. El Presidente

Also, Ricardo Pereira always played as a winger during his years in the youth development teams at Porto. Actually, in detail he started as a right forward in a 4-4-2 system when he was 12/13 yo and than moved wider as a winger in 4-3-3 system. When he became a first team starter was a winger and it was Paulo Fonseca (current Roma´s manager) that transformed him into a very attacking right back.

The point is, I wouldnt be very surprised if Brendan pushes him up further ont he pitch as right winger in 4-3-3 system with Barnes and Vardy. Everyone thinks that hes coming in for Justin (which can happen ofc) but I think he can come in for Albrighton instead.

Salah won't score. I say this as a capper and a Liverpool fan who has watched every minute of their games this season.

The system at Liverpool is broken right now and it's broken the front 3.

Tonight is going to be 1-1 with Liverpool's goal coming from midfield, maybe Ox.

Good move for gw21? Or better off looking at other alternatives?

The first half of the season I played very defensive and tried and hoped I don't lose rank and somewhat managed an okayish rank(~500k). With all the chips intact (including wc) how would you guys approach the second half of the season? Get 3/4 differentials if I am looking to wc around 25? Or just play the same game and hope that my chips make a difference?

I'm also holding all my chips (and looks like it will be green arrows throughout the BGW-DGW and even in the lead up those.

I'm gunna attack the doubles as much as possible and try to BB in the week that has the most doubles. TC on a week when there's the best fixtures for City or Spurs DGW (Kane or KDB I'd think)

        Martinez
        Coufal Dias Stones Justin
        Salah Son Bruno
        Bamford Vardy Antonio
        (Johnstone, Raph, Dallas, Soucek)

I'm really struggling on who is the best keeper to bring in

I was thinking De Gea, then got overwhelmingly shot down 🙂
Then i was thinking Mendy, then i realised Chelsea are currently a bit of a calamity at the back
That moves me onto Martinez but i have a feeling Villa are going to run out of juice in the second half of the season.

I'm currently thinking Guaita - or even just leave it on my incumbent McCarthy & Johnstone

        any opinions? 🙂

I'm really disappointed I didn't just go Bamford > Antonio (-4)for DGW. I asked others' opinions on here and it was roundly rejected - not one person saying to go for it.

when scores are calculated after 1st score recalculation of the GW. eg Friday night game is 1st game of GW then hits calculated in that updated score. This GW hits were factored in after Saturday's fixture scores were calculated
