What effect will Ross Barkley’s return have on Villa’s attacking assets?

Aston Villa’s first Premier League match back since their first-team squad was forced to isolate due to a COVID outbreak saw Ross Barkley (£5.9m) return to their midfield.

Barkley took the place of Anwar El Ghazi (£5.8m), with Jack Grealish (£7.7m) moving out into a wide position.

After a strong showing against Manchester City in Gameweek 19, the former Chelsea player looks to have slotted back into the side with ease.

But with so many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers owning Villa assets like Grealish and Ollie Watkins (£6.1m), how will this affect their points potential?

Yup. Soucek's remarkable dip swings him to first sub for me (out of your options, that is). Mitchell isn't enough to hold the entire West Ham, so he's second sub... Leaving Holding's CS in the hope/expectation of a 0:0 game between two good defences and stoppable attacks

          Coufal will be unanimous

Great points. Especially about the stubborn defenses of both the teams. The call is between Soucek and Holding actually. I have always favoured the attacker in situations like this but Soucek looked ineffective in the DGW.

The Southampton squad looks like it came from a random name generator:

Ings, Long, Ramsay, Watts, Vokins, Smallbone, Walker-Peters, Chauke, Tella, Ferry, Valery, Diallo, N'Lundulu, Vestergaard, Tchaptchet

      Regression to the mean maybe.

They were outperforming their stats by quite a margin past 2 seasons.

and now they are underperforming their stats by quite a margin past 4-5 games..

Forwards are out of form, that is the only issue, a few better finishes, sometimes a few better ref calls, results would've been different, and the discussion would've been totally different, no one would see any issues.

However, the forwards are completely misfiring atm, and instead of having defensive crisis, it's total the opposite..

I dunno about that. Their chance creation has also plummeted. They aren't creating good chances. Robbo and Trent have seriously dropped their creativity levels as well.

I put this down to our mids being at the back but I’m not so sure it’s that simple.

I can agree a bit, but finishing has been worse than chance creating in my opinion, if you have the ball 70% of the time and manage 20+ shots with 6-7 on target, it means you are not clinical enough, Pope was great last night as well...

All I'm saying, in the end, it's the result that dictates the talks, and with a bit element of luck, it could have easily been a different talk for the last few weeks..

The fun facts that everyone easily foget are: 4 games without scoring, still top scoring team, Salah is still a top scorer with 5 blanks in a row, can't see this slump lasting for too long, knowing the mentality of Klopp and the players, especially now when the rotation options are increasing, someone will step up sooner rather then later.

4-5 games is a very small sample size.
If you look at the past 10 games they are on par with their stats.

Think they’re just a bit exhausted, such sustained high levels for nearly three seasons now. The key CBs being out meaning the midfielders are playing further back can’t help. Probably not quite enough squad additions to really take pressure off the key players. Losing Jota was another blow.

Yes the man da bring at the back is a real pain. But I feel opponents have realised exactly what we do. So they sit back and pack the defence, knowing that we are such a small side so us crossing the ball is pointless.

Nah. They just look knackered and confidence is draining. A sharper Pool would have won 4 or 5 níl last night and Firmino, Mane or Salah would have nailed Origi chance.

    6. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

Certainly regarding their dependency on attacks down the flanks by fullbacks, I think a lot of teams have figured out how to deal with the multitude of crosses (helps that Pool don't have much height at the top of the pitch) and have learned how to block more of them down or close off the crossing space. But I also think Klopp trying to move Salah into a more central position with Firmino in behind hasn't really worked too well

    7. thegaffer82
      • 12 Years

They don't have a particularly deep squad in the forward areas.

When Mane, Salah & Bobby are all firing, it matters not a jot. But, right now, and with Jota injured, they are struggling to change it up

    8. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Atletico gave them a jolly good bumming home & away last February & they've never really been the same since then

I was shocked at Klopp's sensitivity to Keane calling them Sloppy in the win vs. Arsenal back in GW3 though - for me that was clear evidence all was not well behind the scenes, never seen Klopp rattled like that until then - and low & behold they go & concede 7 to Villa the next week

They'll likely snap out of this run they're in as they have too much quality not to, but at the same time they'd want to do it sooner rather than later

There’s a multitude of reasons, fatigue with the high press game, mids who are needed there plying at the back, CBs out also meaning dead ball threat gone meaning assists for Robbo/TTA. Does Thiago slow the game down. Were Liverpool outperforming last season or teams underperforming? No CBS is a huge issue I feel. The transfer of the ball from the back quickly to the mids and then on is a hug miss and as last night shows just end up gloating balls into the box against taller bigger players. The money men should get their cheque book out.

One of La Liga’s best players last year playing on loan for Real Sociedad. Was called back to Real Madrid because of that, and noone seems to understand why Zidane suddenly quit playing him. It’s the Norwegian Haaland in midfield

He's been in the league for years and never been an asset in FPL, feels he has spiked some points of late but they are yesterdays points and we are trying to find tomorrows. His stats are good for his value, but no better than Saka, Pereirra, El Ghazi and Lookman over the same 6 week period. (I am not saying to get any of those tho)

I can just see him reverting to the mean and then trying to get him out

I am also coming from the mind frame that his is similar price to a city def, that to me seems a better place to spend a city spot and your money

An incredible amount of people on here predicted his points would jump once Pep changed his position. Exactly that has happened. It’s so glaringly obvious. Anyway, don’t want to try and convince anyone.

I'd say he just meant he's fine as in it's not a really serious injury, but that being said I've seen people giving different time estimates between 2 and 4 weeks. If it looks like 2 weeks as opposed to 4 is a possible estimate I might just take my chances and hold. I'm moving Salah out currently anyway which let's me upgrade my fodder FWD spot so I'm not really missing out for now

        Help please. Tempted to WC...

        Martinez
        Cancelo / Dias / Dallas / Cresswell
        Grealish / Salah / Bruno / Soucek
        Vardy / Bamford

        Steer / KDB* / Mitchell / Brewster

Could do nothing, or KDB out for a -4, or KDB & Brewster to Gundo & Kane for a -8 (which gets me into WC territory imo).

          I'd shift Wilson out.

Think they'll struggle at Villa and home to Leeds and away to Everton from memory.

Palace at home may be their chance for returns.

Of course they could rock up and beat Villa but it doesn't look likely.
