Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 20?

The Gameweek 20 captaincy debate, if we can call it that, has only been about one Fantasy Premier League asset thus far: Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m).

His omission from Manchester United’s starting XI in an FA Cup win over Liverpool, which he still managed to get the winning goal in, has only made the clamour to captain him even stronger ahead of a plum fixture against Sheffield United.

Injuries and/or significant loss of goal-scoring form has hurt the usual challengers for the armband with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) unavailable while Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has blanked in five successive Premier League matches – all good news for Fernandes.

That said, does an injury to De Bruyne open up some differential options in the Manchester City side? Are there perhaps some outside picks up for grabs from the less popular teams? That’s what the Captain Sensible article is here for.

I plan to bring in both Son and Gundo over the next 2 weeks, which order would you do it?

      Gundogan first

Gundo first IMO, for the run of fixtures and penalties. I think they outweigh Son's potential against Liverpool and his high ownership %

1FT and 1.7 spare. Tempted to hold FT.

    Any ideas?
Could do Balbuena > Shaw? Even Bissouma > Gundogan.

    Martinez
    Robertson - Stones - Justin
    Bruno - Salah - Grealish - Bowen
    Bamford - Kane - Antonio

    Dallas - Balbuena - Bissouma

Like the gundogan switch but then you have a bit of a bench headache every week they're both good transfer choices

Could alternatively do Bowen to Gundogan I suppose, and keep Bissouma as bench fodder

Unless you plan to switch to a 352 sometime soon or something but I don't really know I think you could save or take the punt on Gundogan if you really favour him for these upcoming games

          1. Atwood
            • 13 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

I honestly haven't watched Gundogan play recently, so this whole hype seems strange to me.

Thats a good plan. I mean, I could always just save and see where Gundogan plays without KDB. Then I have 2FT's to bring him in with more flexibility etc.

            Thanks for your help.

I haven't watched much either but going by the numbers Az and Mark were discussing on Blackbox there is genuine reason to go for him.

I can never agree on the "you can't bench Robbo" thing. I had a week earlier on this season where I didn't fancy him for a game with their form and the opposition form and I had good options on my bench and was told here that benching him is crazy full stop, I went with it and regretted it and lo and behold Liverpool conceded and my preferred option kept a CS. So while I agree that benching that value might seem a waste, it's not black and white where if you spend over a certain amount on a player you can never bench them no matter what the circumstances.

I don't fancy Pool defence currently, they gave up a lot of shooting opportunities to a team that doesn't threaten going forwards very much last week, and going forwards themselves both wingbacks aren't creating many good opportunities lately. I think they'll have to attack Spurs and go for a win here even knowing it'll play into Spurs hands as they can't afford another poor performance in front of goal or another game without a win and that'll give Spurs a good chance to punish them. So I'm going to say play B especially as Palace are struggling a little with defenders missing currently

Not sure what being brave has to do with it. If it's about ownership, Coufal has the highest ownership of the four in the top 10k (or serious managers in general).

So a bit more on this as I see I'm not the only one struggling here..

      A) Targett - good form but already have Martinez so likely bench
      B) Wolves not in good form.. but ditto Chelsea.. new manager boost?
      C) Coufal - palace no great shakes... West Ham in form
      D) Robbo - hey it's Robbo..

So likely benching A.. torn on the other one

    2 questions please

    1. What impact will KDB out have on Gundo's overall positioning?

      1. We don't really know but folks think Bernardo will take up the KDB role but surely you'd think it may hinder Gundo's output a little

"Man City will have DGW in GW24, 26, and 27 if they beat Swansea in the FA Cup" - Ben Crellin on twitter.

          • 9 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

The thing with Ederson is that he's too expensive to own in a GK pairing.. or maybe at all when you got better options in their defense for less.
If you're definitely planning on keeping Martinez I'd go for it, unless you think it'll be possible to do it for free in the next few rounds.

    Johnsone Adams Dallas Anguissa

Already used my FT to do KDB to Gundo, but any of these moves worth a hit? 7.7 in the bank

    A) Dallas to Dias
    B) Soucek to Sterling
    C) Soucek to Son
    D) Adams to Kane

I'm most strongly considering doing A, and then one or both of C and D for GW21. What do you reckon?

Ta. Getting Kane/Son would be my priority next week, but I would also quite like to max out on Man City players earlier rather than later, with their great fixtures. Plus give more time to recoup points lost to a hit. On the other hand, maybe I'll wait and see how they do without KDB first.

Weird to see the wide range of opinions here on Robbo -- all the way from "definitely play" to "ship out for a hit". (Full disclosure: just sold earlier today, but not for a hit.)

Bamford more likely to play the full 90 - more threatening there than from the bench

Thoughts on these moves this week and next week?
GW 20: KDB + Alioski to Gundo + Cancelo -4
GW 21: Bowen + Watkins to Son + DCL -4

    Leaves me with:

    Mccarthy
    Robbo Chilwell Stones Cancelo
    Son Salah Bruno Gundo
    DCL Bamford

    Johnstone Antonio Coufal Bissouma

Im quite set on the GW 21 moves (barring injuries) but unsure whether the hit to bring in Cancelo this week is worth it.

How on earth have KDB and Vardy not dropped? I'll take it though... own both but wanted to wait until further pressers tomorrow before making moves.

As I have said before, there are things to do with price changes that make no sense. An algorithm cannot be used in all cases. It's impossible for anyone to believe so. One million transfers out for KDB and no drop? And he only has 18.5% ownership at this very time. Vardy has had 697k out owned by 21.1%. It might make more sense if they were owned by 50% or 60% but, even then one million transfers out should cause movement.

There should be one unchanged formula for all. The higher the ownership, the more transfers it should take to move up or down in price. The lower the ownership, then less transfers are needed to move up or down in price. I've emailed the tower for years. The response is always the same, "we cannot disclose blah, blah, blah, etc.....".

Seeing people commenting about price rises/falls and it being confusing.
This is nothing new. FPL Towers have always had a complex system that is fluid in change and does so (change) throughout the year.

Price predictor sites try their best to estimate the changes based on hard analytical work and historical data but it's not easy, and abnormal seasons such as these make it even more difficult!

Below i've pasted some (edited) data from the footnotes of FPL Statistics to help make people understand price changes a bit better:

"For a player to fall in price quickly two factors are important i) teams need to be selling the player and ii) at the same time he must be 100% available (i.e. not injured). For a player to rise in value quickly i) teams need to be buying the player and ii) the player must not be "locked".

When a player is injured (0% chance of playing), suspended or on loan his price can still change in value. However, once his status has changed again his price will be "locked".

When a player is "locked" i) his price will not change and ii) transfers in and out will not affect his price.
A players price will change when the total number of transfers in (or out) of that player reaches a threshold value. The rate at which this threshold is reached is dependent on twelve parameters. Unfortunately to complicate matters these individual factors vary throughout the season. This season a further complication has arisen whereby not all transfers are equally effective (e.g wild cards and other factors).

Any new players added to the fantasy league will not immediately increase (or decrease) in price. A player must have been in the league for over eight days before transfers count towards the threshold value. This locking period can be extended to the start of a new Gameweek if the completion of the eight days period falls within an international break."
