Tomas Soucek punishes doubters as West Ham move into top four

CRYSTAL PALACE 2-3 WEST HAM

  • Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m), Michy Batshuayi (£5.7m) | Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) x2, Craig Dawson (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Jordan Ayew (£5.6m), Christian Benteke (£5.5m) | Michail Antonio (£6.4m), Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m)
  • Bonus: Soucek x3 Dawson x2 Cresswell x1 Batshuayi x1

Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) scored twice as West Ham moved above Liverpool and into the top four with a sixth straight win in all competitions.

The 18.1% owned midfielder wasn’t exactly everyone’s prime candidate for returns at Selhurst Park.

Benched by 422,285 and sold by 213,909, he punished the faithless by making it seven league goals for the season with a first-half brace.

Soucek Him Out

The Czech Republic international brought in 15 points on the night – his third double-digit haul from the last six Gameweeks.

Small wonder that his manager, David Moyes, was quick to praise him post-match.

“I keep saying that Tomas has got a great goalscoring record and he’s a great boy and he’s a good footballer as well. When you think from a year ago when we bought him, the difference he has made to the team is fantastic.”

David Moyes

Soucek offers so much bang for his modest £5.3m buck that he’s now FPL’s best value player in terms of points per million (PPM), with 18.1.

That price tag might not stay so low for so long, however. He’s currently in the top three for Gameweek 21 transfers-in despite a nasty schedule involving Liverpool (home), Aston Villa (away), Spurs (home) and Manchester City (away) over the next six matches.

Then again, the Hammers flourished during a particularly spiteful early-season fixture list and even the naturally understated Moyes can’t curb his enthusiasm at present.

“We’re on it and the players are on it and I think they can even do much better. I think we are only scraping the surface and there is a lot more to come.”

David Moyes

The Bargain Boys

It’s not only Soucek rocking the value table either.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) leads the way for PPM among defenders, with 16.7, while team-mates Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m and 14.8) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m and 13.8) are also in the top 12.

Another defender offering a fine return on investment is Craig Dawson (£4.5m).

He scored at Palace and in the the five straight starts he’s made for West Ham since joining on loan from Watford he now has a goal and three clean sheets to his name.

Up front, the 8.3 PPM provided by Michail Antonio might seem like a major downgrade, but the striker’s season has been hugely disrupted by injury, and an assist last night meant he’s now produced returns in three straight starts.

And it could have been so much better – in the first half, Soucek hit two goals, Antonio two posts.

The Moyes The Merrier

Of the two managers, Moyes was understandably the happier, although Palace boss Roy Hodgson took some solace from losing by just the one goal.

“We tried hard, made substitutions and put attackers onto the field which led to a consolation goal at the end. But it also opened us up enormously to the counter-attack. There were a lot of situations in the game I was fearing West Ham would aggravate the score.”

Roy Hodgson

Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) scored early to break his personal three-Gameweek goal drought, courtesy of Christian Benteke’s (£5.5m) second assist in three matches.

But goals aren’t exactly pouring from Hodgson’s side – the 24 they’ve managed can be bettered by 12 teams and Zaha has nine of them.

And the manager’s more traditional reputation for defensive solidity has gone AWOL this term.

Only West Brom (48) have conceded more goals than the Eagles’ 36 and the three clean sheets they’ve kept is the league’s third-worst record.

Then again, two of those shut-outs have come in the last four Gameweeks and all three have involved Tyrick Mitchell (£3.9m).

The cheap-as-chips defender can now be found in 18.1% of FPL squads, making him Palace’s most popular asset.

The club’s short-term schedule involves Wolves, Burnley and Fulham at home and Newcastle, Leeds and Brighton away, which suggests more Mitchell returns incoming – if he continues to keep Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) out of the team, that is.

Hodgson will also have another attacking option to try out against Wolves – new signing Jean-Philippe Mateta (£6.0m).

“He now has his visa, which was a slight issue we had to sort out, but he now has that and he’ll train with us on Thursday and Friday. He’ll certainly be in the squad for Saturday and I’ll have to make a decision whether he starts the game or not.”

Roy Hodgson

Crystal Palace (4-4-2): Guaita; Ward, Kouyate, Cahill, Mitchell; Townsend (Batshuayi 66), Milivojevic (Riedewald 73), McArthur, Eze; Zaha, Benteke (J Ayew 73).

West Ham (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Fornals. Benrahma (Noble 87), Bowen (Fredericks 81); Antonio (Yarmolenko 83)

    What's everybody's thoughts on Salah?

I see him in a lot of people's teams but his stats recently have been shocking and I'm actually considering selling.

Are people expecting him to be back to his old ways soon? Feel like I'm struggling for reasons to keep hold right now.

Feel like his past seasons are the only reason to keep hold of him. Really not sure I could trust him with the armband on the next two unless he shows some attacking potential tomorrow.

Sold him 3 weeks ago, will get him back if his form turns but no point in holding a £12.5 million player that returns 2 or 3 points a week, when there are plenty of others at half the price returning far better for now
Was the same with KDB, very difficult to justify the price for the return

I'm almost certainly bringing him in this week for KDB. Otherwise I have no where else to spend the money. He may not be worth 13m atm, but he's going to hit some form again at some point and I want to have him when he does. Gundogan is great value rn at 5.5 and should be 9-10m asset but I'm not kidding myself that he's a better option than Salah if money is no issue (which it isn't)

Tha lack of premium options is whats keeping him in teams, if KDB, Auba, Aguero and chelsea mids were all firing he would have been cashed in more heavily I'm sure but with so many value picks performing well people arent looking to free up funds which is likely giving him a stay of execution

    McCarthy- Martinez
Mitchell- Dias - Stones - Coufal - Castange
    Gundo-Bruno-Saka-Son-Maddison

They picked up 1 CS in the first 11, and 3 in the last 6. So, the defense has certainly improved. 6 assists in 9 games so far this season as well. Price tag is a little steep but with people moving to Gundo from KdB, that shouldn't be a problem. Fixtures are a mixed bag though. He's a good punt if you are chasing. Newcastle, Leeds and Fulham in the next 4 after this GW.

    Best option out of these?

    A) Raphinha ➡️ Son (Keep Bamford)
    B) Bamford ➡️ Kane (Keep Raphinha)
    C) Raphinha & Bamford ➡️ Son & DCL -4
    D) Raphinha & Bamford ➡️ Kane & Madison/Barnes -4

Like the look of C the most as of now.

I wonder if he realised that you couldn't play a wildcard and then bench-boost in the same week. For someone doing so well, it's odd that he played Mendy in goal rather than Schmeichel, considering the fixtures. Think perhaps he didn't think it mattered, and only realised couldn't play bench-boost at last minute.

True. Goes to show he picked a good squad. However, Pereira 24 pointer was totally unexpected, but some would argue you could say the same about Soucek this GW. In hindsight though, I'm still unsure why I started Adams ahead of Soucek. Sigh.

One thing i'll say is that hat's off to Allardyce, he called Pereira out 2 weeks back and since then he has scored 3.

Foolish WCing in the double then BBing a week later. No sympathy.

2.7m captaining Bruno this GW is a FPL record. Surprising given that 3 times that many play the game these days.

Always 2/3 options though. But with Spurs facing Liverpool and Vardy & KdB out, he was the only big hitter people targetted for captaincy.

I was mid-way through the GW that City beat Fulham 2-0. 3k at that point. But I've just been loitering between 40k and 70k all season really. Not bad, but hoping all chips in hand propels me during the GW25-29 run.

It's just the FPL benchmark. I dunno. Hard enough to be worth bragging about and yet attainable enough that people can boast they have multiple consecutive finishes at it.

Yeah, there's almost twice as many players now than there were but the benchmark hasn't adjusted.

Fortunately, 3 of my 4 top 10ks have been inside the top 5k too.

Because back when FPL barely had a million players only a few took it very seriously - relatively easy for those who did to get top 10k and proclaim themselves as "FPL pros". Although i see the same people bragging about top 100k rankings now that there's 7 million players and top 10k is extremely hard

Anyone know enough about Ødegarrd to know where he might slot in at Arsenal, and who might be at risk for minutes? Primarily concerned about Saka....

Odegaard can play a number of positions and saka is so versatile/essential he won't have his minutes reduced

Kind of what I'm hoping/thinking as well. I can't see Arteta using him as just a straight sub off the bench, will be interesting to see what things look like

    Rough day last night.

I was between the options of either play Dallas, Soucek or Gundogan for a hit. Went with Dallas massive 2-pointer i the end.

I was also not brave enough to choose Cancelo as my captain so Bruno is my man. Cancelo is still my VC.

If Bruno doesn't play i will get in Soucek and Cancelo will get the captain points. Thats freakin 32 points.

Will be confirmed in an hour but hearing some interesting #CFC team news for Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge: back three, all three Germans involved and expect Callum Hudson-Odoi to play as a right wing back. Mason Mount has been left out of the XI. - tweet

      Apparently yes.
If CHO is right wingback in a back 3, does that mean James out and Zouma in, or more likely Azpi?

        Yeah James miss out.
Rumour is Mount is on bench and the 3 Germans starts.
        Think Ziyech will miss out

    Guys, your advice please.
Would you do Bamford and Brewster out for DCL and Kane.
The problem would leave me with a benching headache of a front 8.

    Gundo, Grealish, Son, Salah, Bruno.
    Antonio, DCL, Kane.

Im considering it, or is it a bad idea ?? got a strong defence too with Maguire and double City, Dallas, Coufal.

I am considering that move also for -4. Leaves Soucek to be benched. In your case maybe not worth a hit, who are you going to bench?

Before it goes crazy on here as usual. It’s so nice having multiple games on at once.

Less focussing on one player at a time who often lets you down. More enjoying the football while getting a semi regular return from one of several players

3 out of 4 nice fixtures for Chelsea. If they play well tonight I’m very tempted to punt on 1-2 players.

Especially if they have a wingback system
