Hasenhüttl welcomes Romeu and Bertrand back as Smith selects Sanson on Villa bench

Ralph Hasenhüttl welcomes back some key personnel to his Southampton team for their Gameweek 21 meeting with Aston Villa.

Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) missed the midweek defeat to Arsenal through suspension and makes an immediate return at left-back.

With Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m) out for an indeterminate amount of time, the right-back berth is tonight occupied by central midfielder Ibrahima Diallo (£4.5m) now that Hasenhüttl has more options in his preferred position.

Oriol Romeu (£4.5m) is the other key returnee tonight, starting next to James Ward-Prowse (£6.1m) for the first time since Gameweek 16 in Southampton’s 4-4-2 system.

Meanwhile, Nathan Redmond (£6.4m) features on the flanks of midfield with Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) as Theo Walcott (£5.8m) moves up the pitch to play up-front with Danny Ings (£8.4m). That sees Che Adams (£5.9m) drop to the Southampton bench.

As is to be expected, Aston Villa are unchanged with Jack Grealish (£7.7m) and Ollie Watkins (£6.2m) in the left-wing and centre-forward roles respectively.

However, all eyes will be on their bench as Morgan Sanson is named among the substitutes and is thought to be challenging John McGinn (£5.5m) and Douglas Luiz (£4.9m) for central midfield berth in the near future.

Southampton v Aston Villa Line-ups

Southampton XI: A McCarthy; Bertrand, Bednarek, J Stephens, Diallo; Redmond, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Armstrong; Walcott, Ings.

Aston Villa XI: Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Cash; McGinn, D Luiz; Grealish, Barkley, B Traoré; Watkins.

It's not. He was offside. And they apply that consistently. Just unlucky.

No they didn’t otherwise VAR would have overruled the linesman obviously.

It’s offside called by the linesman and VAR didn’t see any reason to overturn it.

Offside is offside regardless of how offside it is.

Their defence has been very lucky this season. It will end. Maybe not for 10 or so GWs, but it will end just as everyone (particularly next season) piles in on them big time.

They decided that the sleeve of your shirt being part of the body you could score a goal with....so they use that in var decisions

From the line I'm looking at, the sleeve is dead in line with the defenders backside therefore level and onside.

I’m convinced they drew the lines wrong - you could see them doing it live

Initially “Ings shoulder” line was slightly to left, and the “Villa defenders arse” line was slightly to the right leaving Ings onside

Then they inexplicably minutely shunted Ings line to the right. And Villa defenders line to the left (so much so that there was a bit of the Villa defender’s arse protruding past the line) making it microscopically offside

Disgusting behaviour from the Video Assisted Referee

When you combine it with THAT penalty decision in the first half - it was bordering on match fixing

            Villa were blessed

As much as when Sheffield somehow had that over the line goal disallowed vs them at the end of last season

Why can't they just set a precedent and agree it will only be given offside if it's clear. All other cases where it's so close, instead of analysing armpit hairs and pieces of cotton on players shirts, they should just call it level and onside. Its an utter nonsense. If that Ings goal was given onside, would anybody have argued with it? I highly doubt it.

Bloody hell man... do as much planning and thinking as you want, sometimes this game just takes the p doesn’t it...

Last week: Martinez 1pt v Burnley who somehow score 3, while Areola hauls against a better Brighton side with 10pt on my bench

This week: even more disparity in fixtures means I start Areola for the first time ever against WBA - 2GC, not even a damn save. Meanwhile Martinez gets 10pt v a decent Southampton side?

    Make it make sense

Luck. On another day, Southampton would be 1-0 after an Ings penalty and Villa would have conceded more on the counter trying to chase the game.
