Top 10k eye Salah and Son as Man City assets falter in wide-open captaincy battle

Fantasy Premier League managers ranked inside the top 10,000 are eyeing Sunday’s matches after a score of captaincy blanks on Saturday.

At this high level, Manchester City duo Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) and Ilkay Gündogan (£5.8m) were the most popular candidates for the armband ahead of an appealing home meeting with Sheffield United.

However, the two players scored just three points between them on Saturday afternoon, all of those coming from Gündogan while Sterling remained an unused substitute.

As you can see, 26.2% of the top 10k selected Sterling as their Gameweek 21 captain, more than any other option.

It is worth saying that his majority was about as slim as it gets with Gündogan running him close with the support of 25.3%.

Their failure to deliver points at the Etihad Stadium has set the top 10k for a seismic Sunday afternoon.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) will be the key player, having soaked up 17.3% of the armbands in the upper echelon, the owners of which are sure to feel at ease at Gameweek 21’s half-way stage.

If the Egyptian produces a sizeable haul at West Ham United then we could see a big shift inside the top 10k. 17.3% backing is arguably small enough to result in large green arrows for his faithful followers.

And if Salah does blank for a sixth successive Premier League match, the poor displays by Sterling and Gündogan, as well as a lack of a clear captaincy leader, certainly take the pressure off.

The same goes for the 9.5% of top 10k managers who captained Son Heung-min (£9.8m) for a trip to Brighton.

The South Korean’s last away goal came in the Gameweek 13 win over Liverpool but if he does register a big score at the Amex Stadium then the same factors mentioned for Salah captainers could do wonders for his backers too.

An examination of the top 10k vice-captains also heaps the hype on Salah and Son.

The Egyptian is waiting in line to claim 24.5% of top 10k armbands in the even of a no-show, which we saw with Sterling on Saturday.

Son completes the top-two among top 10k vice-captains with a 15.0% share.

The potential for a top-10k reshaping in Gameweek 21 is best shown by the breakdown of effective ownership.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.4m) was the only player at that level to achieve over 100% in this department for the weekend’s fixtures with Salah (87.7%), Gündogan (84.4%) and Son (67.2%) all falling short.

And it is telling that João Cancelo (£6.0m), John Stones (£5.2m) and Sterling completed the top seven for top 10k effective ownership for Gameweek 21 but combined for a total of zero points against Sheffield United.

Furthermore, Stones and Cancelo are now the most-owned defenders in the top 10k after the Gameweek 21 deadline.

The centre-back was already a fixture at this level, his 62.% ownership actually dropping from 63.2% between the two most recent deadlines.

But this was the first week that Cancelo launched himself into the top-five most-popular top 10k defenders again. He was owned by less than 37.6% of these top-level managers for Gameweek 20, rising to 58.9% ownership for Gameweek 21 only to score zero points.

The top 10k appear to be losing their patience with Stuart Dallas (£4.8m), who has dropped out of the top-five popular defenders ahead of a trip to Leicester.

Dugout discussion - souars + wbamci

In midfield, Gündogan’s first blank since Gameweek 18 occurred just as his top 10k ownership spiked. He was only in 36.2% of their teams for the 14-point haul at West Bromwich Albion but became the third-most-popular top 10k midfielder (59.2%) for a three-point score against Sheffield United.

Unsurprisingly, the only other sizeable shifts are in the forward line that, due to injuries, has largely been in flux over recent Gameweeks.

Patrick Bamford (£6.6m) remains the most fashionable forward in the top 10k although his ownership has dropped from 83.5% to 72.3% between the two most recent deadlines.

Michail Antonio (£6.5m) has earned a top 10 ownership increase of five percentage points after his impressive display at Crystal Palace even though he faces Liverpool on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m) looks to have been the most popular replacement for Harry Kane (£11.2m) who, of course, was turned to as a replacement for Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) the week before.

The Spurs man was the third-most fashionable forward in the top 10k in Gameweek 20 with 53.7% ownership at that level.

Calvert-Lewin occupies that slot for Gameweek 21 and is now in 51.5% of top 10k squads.

Chip usage was relatively minimal for Gameweek 21.

As you can see, barely anyone touched the Triple Captain, Free Hit and Bench Boost buttons while just 1.9% of the top 10k played their second Wildcard.

That brings the total top-10k usage for the latter up to 35.2% for the season so far.

Thus far, 55.1% of the top 10k have used two chips in the second half of the campaign.

24.0% have used only one while 14.3% of managers at this level are one chip away from exhausting their supply.

It is worth considering the Wildcard squads among the top 10k for Gameweek 21 to get an idea of any emerging trends.

There is already some consideration for Chelsea players with 33.2% of the top 10k Wildcards selecting Ben Chilwell (£6.1m) for Gameweek 21 – someone who is yet to trouble the overall template at this level.

These Wildcarders are less fussed by Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) it seems. The West Ham right-back is owned by 49% of the top 10k for Gameweek 21 but is not among the top-five most-popular Wildcard defenders.

Son (73.2%) was chosen by more Wildcarding managers than Salah (64.2%) while Sterling (46.8%) looks a differential for those who pulled the trigger on a new squad considering just 34% of the top 10k managers own him for Gameweek 21.

More horrible luck...Sterling and Cancelo owner, brought in Digne and Richarlison who did nothing!
Three clean sheets saving the day from disaster!
Now come on Son(c), rip it up later!

    Bench:

    A) Shaw
    B) Stones
    C) Bamford

I have Cancelo if it helps. Benching Shaw at the mo but he seemed to create so much in the Arsenal game (livid he missed out on a bonus), and might be better to spread the risk.

Getting rid of Martinez for that blank earlier in the season has been a disaster. Stubbornly refusing to bring him back in after all the price rises isn't going too well either!

Me too, luckily I brought him back this week for McCarthy as my FT, something I wouldn’t usually do with it being a keeper transfer, but couldn’t take being punished anymore

I forgot how horrible it was reading throough the starting line-ups during these busy periods .... looking at Pep using no subs today (bar Rodri in 90min) I think he plans on playing a completely different 11 on Wed and then palying todays team next wknd .....

But either way I think we'll be lucky to get 11 Starting players in the next 2 GW's .... which makes all these planned transfers and selection dilemmas a bit redundant

Make your own GW1 team, don't change it too much in response to the crowd. Then if you didn't get it right, don't be stubborn -- fix it.

The tricky thing is, these two are in conflict. If you have a team that's yours, and you have a strong sense of ownership of it, you'll usually be reluctant to change it, even when you should.

Chelsea got some good fixtures but picking the team is tricky. Who do you think will hauling over the next three weeks. I’m nervous about going to Werner, Havertz , Ziyech, Giroud but brave people could make big points under the new system

Azpi seems to be back in first the team. This coach is very defensive. Play it safe and go Chilwell and Mendy.
Or take a punt on Azpi and Werner.

Lamptey is one I've been watching, he seems immune to dropping for some reason. One of the most frustrating parts of the game if you ask me. They should just make the rules known or tell people based on transfers out x player will rise or fall tonight at 11pm and let people make up their minds up whether to move early or not. It might actual slow down transfers and make the game more enjoyable/less frantic for players that like to play a tactical game

Yep the manipulation of price changes has always been a joke. Seems to be getting worse.

You'll find many defend it though, the "wildcards" defense is the funniest example of this. As if this shouldn't be factored in.

Players should ONLY change price right at the end of the gameweek and the game should stay locked until Gameweek ends. Once next gameweek opens the new prices are revealed and you have x amount of time to do transfers until next gameweek locks.

I'd love if they went that way. It would allow lads that don't have as much time to be checking on price progression daily a chance to stay in the game and get rid of most of the frustration of getting a player in early only to see them get injured.

Honestly... I know we are all bored of this but - can anyone explain why:
      - a red flagged KDB took a week to drop once?
      - whilst a red flagged Kane dropped twice in two days?

And yes - I did sell KDB straight away. And yes - I am still holding Kane through these drops!
But despite all my salt - I still don’t get how the logic is applied here!

      1. Majestic Chanka
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

It’s just usual BS from FPL Towers, guy in charge owned KDB and want time whereas he didn’t own Kane so is just hitting the price drop button like crazy.

        1. Brimble82
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

          It really feels like that.
Last week I questioned the numbers on why Vardy had dropped and KDB still hadn’t (I know he did subsequently), and someone commented that a red flagged player needed treble the number of sales to create a drop (so essentially 30%). But that turns to sh*t when Kane (red flagged) drops twice in two days.

I really do think it’s a joke that the FAQs simply state ‘Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players.’

It’s a notable part of the game, why does it have to be so clandestine?

        2. Brimble82
          • 5 Years

And the other thing that doesn’t make sense is...
FPL is mostly driven by traffic to their site (and thus generated revenue from sponsors/advertising etc), so surely including - or being transparent - About price changes would increase traffic to the site.
So in turn, would benefit their model.
I don’t understand what they gain by not disclosing it!

Whilst I agree there’s some weird price changes going on, I think it’s better that FPL doesn’t reveal the algorithm otherwise transfers for some people would become more mechanical and it would remove part of the mystery / fun of the game (even though it often fries our brains!)

            1. Brimble82
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 2 months ago

I’m not sure I agree (which is fine - we don’t need to!)

Mechanical price led transfers won’t necessarily equal points.
Quite often making tfrs that are price change driven aren’t the tfrs that will gain you points - but at least we would have the information to be able to make an informed decision, rather than having to guess what may/may not happen dependant upon the whim (or mysterious FPL Towers algorithm) of those in control.

There's.plenty of examples like this all season. Random 4m players with no owners suddenly drop to 3.9. Etc etc

A players has NT of 100K, goes up to 0.1, then the next week same player has NT -100K. Doesn't drop.

        It's so obvious.

        1. Brimble82
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah... and the other way too.
I’ve owned Mitchell all season and have been watching to see if he’ll return to £4.0m
Since his drop to £3.9m (where he had 1.13m owners) he has increased ownership 300k (to 1.43m) an increase of +25% - yet still remains at £3.9m

I obviously have a vested interest here, because a single rise means a direct rise for me, but it still doesn’t fit the ‘mould’.

Oh well, with all my KDB (& soon to be Kane) money in the bank. These £0.1s don’t really matter.
Just annoying. It could be done so much better.

KDB started the season with 2.0m owners at 11.5

By GW4 he had 3.1m owners and was 11.7

He now has 0.9m owners and is 11.8

      Ridiculous

Yup, good point. If we understood that, we’d probably have a better idea of how the new algorithm works.

I still believe there has to be some logic to it, rather than someone at FPL towers making it up as he goes along.

To be honest I wish prices were more elastic up and down with the least owned players drifting lower during the season so an overpriced 6m player can suddenly become an option to disrupt the template. The explanations for Kane double drop makes no sense compared to KDB holding which suggests there is somebody with their own motives that takes a last look at the algo’s results before approving them
