How I try to balance FPL decisions with supporting a top-flight club

Fresh from an overall rank of 389 in 2019/20, Seb Wassell has finished in the top 5k three times in his FPL career with a total of five top 15k ranks since 2012/13. A Leeds fan and a disciple of Marcelo Bielsa at heart, Seb can be found on both the Scoutcast and Scoutcast Matchday on our YouTube channel, as well as writing two articles a month for the site.

‘Would you rather your team won the title or you won FPL?’ A classic question in the Fantasy Premier League sphere. Perhaps just a bit of fun, perhaps a test of your loyalties.

For me, the answer has always been simple: I’d rather my team won the title. This isn’t just because it is a nonsensical conundrum not based in reality – one doesn’t affect the other, I can have both, or more likely, neither – but because the two have always been completely separate for me. I support Leeds United.

The Premier League hasn’t had to cross the Leeds supporting side of my brain in a very long time. The closest to overlapping Leeds and FPL has gotten for me was trying to refresh the official app with frozen hands and no signal at a wintery Elland Road. That is, until this season.

As a long-time FPL player, I would like to think I have a decent grasp of the common pitfalls we can all fall into when chasing that elusive mini-league win. Possibly the most common of these is being unable to act dispassionately when considering our own sides and their FPL prospects.

 1

Going into a Sunday afternoon hoping for both your team’s star striker to score and the opposition goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet seems a contradiction. Many may justify decisions on this basis, from “Well, at least if we lose I’ll have done well in FPL” and “I watch him every week, he’s going to score, trust me” to “I can’t captain him against my own team!”.

Some may even see the ghosts of superstition in acting for or against your team by means of FPL decisions. My cousin, when his beloved Fulham are in the Premier League, insists on selecting three Fulham players in his side no matter what. He’s never won our mini league, by the way. For the first time in my FPL career, this was going to be my problem too. But I had a plan.

If I couldn’t trust myself to avoid a Leeds bias, I would simply avoid Leeds altogether. I understood our strengths, weaknesses and style of player ahead of the season, hopefully better than most, but I did not believe I would be able to act on this objectively.

Even if I thought Patrick Bamford (£6.6m) would defy his previously poor conversion rate (I didn’t), no problem, Che Adams (£5.9m) is here for me with his similarly frustrating relationship with expected goals (xG).

While everyone else was debating Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) vs Luke Ayling (£4.5m), I was comfortably settling into my James Justin (£5.1m) pick. What I didn’t account for is Leeds doing quite so well and our players being quite so popular amongst my fellow FPL managers. This was a mistake.

Bamford was, converse to all previous evidence, tearing it up and Dallas had found himself both in more favourable positions due to injuries and producing impressive, if sometimes fortunate, output from them. Eventually, I re-evaluated my thinking and on the Gameweek 5 Wildcard and brought in Ayling. But neither Bamford nor Dallas you ask? Correct. This was my second mistake.

Prior to Gameweek 5, Dallas and Ayling were relatively even in terms of potential. Ayling came out on top for me due to Dallas’ historic numbers at left-back, all else being equal the position he would play, being significantly weaker than at right-back.

Bamford had still not convinced me. This bit was the Leeds fan winning over the FPL manager: Bamford was performing well, but not unsustainably given the numbers. However, a fateful mix of my knowledge of Bamford’s previous chronic underperformance and my textbook Leeds pessimism that comes complimentary with 15 years of Elland Road season tickets, led me to denounce him a second time.

It took me until Gameweek 11 to succumb and bring Bamford in for the injured Michail Antonio (£6.5m). Bamford delivered for me, but this was a move that others without white, yellow and blue in their veins had profited from weeks ago.

Fast-forward to Gameweek 21 and I have since transferred out both Ayling and, in my most recent move, Bamford. Ayling for obvious reasons – playing centre back all but removing his attacking threat and, due to massive injury issues in defence and our unique man-marking system coming up against players of considerably higher quality than in the Championship, Leeds’ well-documented poor record at the back.

Bamford for less obvious reasons. Let’s have a look at why and see how a combination of my unintentional bias and an eagerness to grow my FPL rank have potentially backfired.

From Gameweeks 1 to 20, Leeds scored 32 goals from an xG of 29.24 (61.5 mins/xG), having created a chance every 6.5 minutes. A slight overperformance but not too significant. Bamford had 10 goals from an xG of 11.16 (144.2 mins/xG).

However, when we look at the two fixtures prior to Leicester in Gameweek 21, there is a stark drop off. Leeds scored two goals against Brighton (Gameweek 19) and Newcastle (Gameweek 20) from an xG of 1.01, with Bamford himself scoring zero goals from an xG of 0.05 That’s a single off target shot across two Gameweeks.

While this is far from an acceptable sample size and includes the match on an almost unplayable (but now re-laid) pitch against Brighton, it could indicate the start of a trend. At a rank of ~270k, identifying the start of a trend before others is something that interests me. So out he went for Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m).

Those of you reading this will know that Bamford scored once and assisted twice against Leicester (from an xGI of 1.02) in GW21. His goal was a brilliant, if low probability, strike. He also created one further chance (for a total of 3, all considered “big”) and hit the woodwork. Mistake number three.

Realistically, I do not believe my error was in interpreting the stats this way or that – plenty of people will have seen those and made their own, well-reasoned decisions – but rather in the fact that I am seemingly still looking for reasons to avoid Leeds, even now.

I acted hastily not only because there was a potential edge to be found, but because it gave me a chance to return to my no-Leeds happy state. Interestingly, in researching this piece, I discovered I have not captained a player against Leeds once this season. That has not been deliberate, but clearly suggests that I also have some sort of subconscious aversion to hoping against us.

The solution seems clear. Dispassionate objectivity. But this is football, one of the most passionate, subjective things out there. Can we successfully combine the two?

Going forwards, this is something I need to address. The advice I would give to others is to lean into and act on your club knowledge, it should be an advantage not a hindrance, but to give equal weighting to the research you do on other teams. The experience of others can be invaluable here. Most of us probably support a Premier League team, and so most of us probably face this issue. If we work together, I can balance my biased knowledge with your biased knowledge and together we can likely find the truth in the middle.

Should we stick or twist on Leeds assets for Gameweek 20 & beyond?

I am confident in my ability to assess other teams objectively and to the advantage of my FPL prospects, we need to treat our supported teams the same. Ask yourself what you would do if that overlapping fullback or goal-scoring striker was playing for another club? We also need to be aware of the availability heuristic here.

Simply, this is the fact that we are naturally biased towards information that we see or can recall easily over equally valid information that we are not regularly aware of. We all see much more of our own team than any other, and so will naturally be more exposed to the information that concerns them.

This can lead us to placing too much value in the actions of our team, positive or negative, over that of others. For example, if two players are taking an identical number of equal quality shots, we are likely to favour the one that plays for our team. This is because we are probably seeing every single one of their shots from the stands (or television these days) each week, meaning it is both fresh in our mind and constantly reinforced. Whereas as we only intermittently see the goals the other player scores on Match of the Day, meaning it is easier to discount. However, both players are equally valid as FPL options.

If I can make peace between these two sides of myself, the Leeds fan and the FPL manager, perhaps Bamford will forgive me and I can avoid a fourth mistake. After all, as revealed in his Sunday post-match interview, if Patrick has himself in his fantasy team who am I to argue?

Or maybe the very fact that I am thinking about this is the problem. I don’t give Man City nearly as much thought and yet I own three of their players. Maybe what I should really be asking is ‘would I rather my team got relegated or I never win FPL?

      really tough one.

I'd probably say DCL as he is least likely to hurt you. 2 double digit hauls all season. feels like he's a 6-8 point man at best.

Isn't Antonio also a 6-9 by that logic? He hasn't gotten more than 1 return at all.

Honestly no idea how I'd choose from those.

I suppose Bamford is yellow flagged, so at a push, maybe him. But his injury is minor, and I'd be uncomfortable benching him, especially after his performance at the weekend.

But I'm literally clutching at straws here. I'd be uncomfortable benching *any* of those.

Good luck, and sorry I can't be more helpful.

very tough, I have the same 7 plus Brewster (instead of Antonio) luckily. I would very reluctantly bench DCL I guess.

They're actually fourth worst for goals conceded over the last six gameweeks, second worst for xGC, third for SiB conceded and fifth for big chances conceded.

They're not all that solid at all lately, and West Ham have some of the best attacking stats, so I'd be very cautious benching Antonio.

Personally I'd lean towards Gundo there Corgzz, as risky as it might seem

The Liverpool game on Sunday would be his 4th start in 11 days if he starts Burnley - so Pep might give him a rest before Pool

      Tough decision though

The goalkeeper situation right now is really interesting. Has there been any stage this season where there have been so many attractive picks?

I don't own Martinez (having sold him back in November, very costly error) and he has seemed like quite an obvious selection for a few weeks. However, there are a number of keepers who are worthy of consideration and it may be time to pick a differential to climb up the rankings, since the hundreds of thousands with Martinez will surely be holding onto him (barring wildcards of course)

The ones I'm looking at are:

    Leno (5.0m): FPL form 5.8 (6,7,6,6,3,7); saves: 2,3,2,1,4,3

Arsenal have tightened up no end recently and a settled backline with a fit and firing Holding keeping things tight. The next 6 fixtures are an average light blue on the FFS defence ticker.

Expected goals prevented (over the last six)- high, which suggests that he is performing well but with a risk of regression to the mean.

    Guaita (4.8m): FPL form 5.4 (9,7,10,0,2,8); saves: 2,2,4,2,5,4

I'm not sure about Guaita. Palace always seem to be one poor half away from a major wobble, and their recent record against the top teams has been poor. That said, he's always got a big performance in him with a 9 and a 10 in the last 6. He also has save points in three of the last six. Strong next 6 fixtures averaging out at a mid-blue on the ticker.

xGC: low - suggests he is performing below average but may improve

Ederson (6.0): FPL form (in games actually played) 6.2 (6,6,6,7,6,6); saves: 2,1,0,4,1,1

A set and forget option from arguably the most in-form defence in recent premier league history. No goals in him of course, though you might get the odd assist (!) and he seems immune to rotation, putting him slightly ahead of some other defensive assets. Fixtures: light red average over next six. Won't get many save points.

xCG: High - performing well, but is there the risk of slippage with tougher fixtures coming up?

    Pope (5.4): FPL form 4.6 (6,4,2,11,3,3); saves: 2,6,2,6,8,7

A perennial over-achiever from a side who always allow a lot of shots but not many clear cut chances, and who rarely concede more than the odd goal. An FPL manager's dream. Hasn't kept many clean sheets recently but he's put in a phenomenal amount of saves, earning just a single set of (3) bonus points in the process however. Fixtures: grey/average

xGC medium-high and given his abilities and history, unlikely to regress

    Mendy (5.2): FPL form 4.4 (2,2,6,2,6,6); saves: 1,3,2,4,0,0

With Mendy it's not so much about the last six as the last two (and the next few). Since Tuchel took over, albeit against a largely toothless Wolves and Burnley) Chelsea have keep two clean sheets in two and Mendy has not had a single save to make across both fixtures combined. He is also (surely) immune to the rotation uncertainties currently plaguing the Chelsea backline. His fixtures even out at an average grey colour on the ticker, but arguably, Spurs without Kane are not much of a threat as their performance against Brighton last night demonstrated. Change this fixture to a light blue on the ticker and their next 6 look pretty good.

xGC slightly below average, which suggests he's underperforming slightly and could even improve. That said, for his stats to improve here, Chelsea need to start conceding shots on target!

So, what do you think. Have I missed anyone and do you disagree with any of this? For my money, Mendy and Leno seem to be the most interesting, though I'd be tempted by Ederson if I were on a wildcard. Pope is always a good option though he is a little costlier than some of the others.

      For comparison, Martinez (5.1m) is:

      FPL form: 5.0 (3,3,3,6,1,10); saves: 4,7,7,1,2,4

Average xGC, light blue fixtures in the next 6.

I think you're reading too much into xGC and not enough into Villa's defence and Martinez"s sense. Though not many could have predicted how good Villa are after nearly falling off last season's cliff. City's defence is very good, not just relying on keeping the ball to not concede, but proper defending too.

Yeah I don't normally look too much at xGC - does a high xGC mean a keeper is really good or really lucky, or both? But it adds a little extra to the selection criteria and I think it's something to consider as part of the whole.

I don't understand them X stats at all. xG I think is expected goals. I look at past games and if I'm lucky enough to see games or highlights. For attacking players buy the player. A bad team like last season's Villa could have an FPL diamond. Pereira could do good points for a relegated looking West Brom. But for a defender or keeper your buying a team' s defensive capabilities. Unfortunately a keeper or defender could have their CS bonus ruined by a teammates recklessness even though they've been great. Early Tuchel days but Rudiger looks a bargain. To make up points on your rivals I think the goalie hasn't much leeway fir good differentials. Hopefully you'll find some outfield picks, maybe even in this transfer window.

Start Holding or Dallas? Fancy Arsenal for a clean sheet against Wolves but also fancy Dallas getting attacking returns again.

    McCarthy | Forster
    Cancelo | Dias | Coufal | Alioski | 3.9m
    Salah | Sterling | Bruno | Son | Soucek
    DCL | Antonio | Brewster

    1FT 0.6 itb.

    Any Suggestions?

Was thinking to upgrade McCarthy to Martinez/Guaita but with chances of Saints having a DGW in 24, think I should ust wait to get more info. Other move was to upgrade Alioski to Dallas/Shaw/Targett. But I think I can wait a week as well. 2 FTs in GW23/24 might be handy.

    Mendy

    Cancelo - Dias - AWB

    Salah - Sterling - Fernandes - Saka

    DCL - Bamford - Antonio

    Areola - Soucek - Dier - Coufal

I'm capping Cancelo again unless we get some game-changing team news.

I was prepared to cap him against SHU but he was benched. I see no reason why the Burnley fixture is any worse for him. They are awful in attack, and City have an amazing record against Burnley. If Cancelo plays he's going to be in midfield playmaking. If Gundo is out he might as well be the City #8. One benching and nobody has any interest in him anymore. I'm still happy to try once more here.

I'm not convinced Salah is the best this week. I never like captaining against Brighton. It hasn't worked well in general for me. Their defensive numbers are very impressive and they concede very few chances. They're also coming into a bit of form. They played extremely well against Spurs and limited them to almost nothing. Salah also is coming off 3 straight games of 90 minutes. They might be short of options, but the Liverpool red zone is a thing and I'd be surprised if he plays more than 70 here and he could even get a cameo appearance.

Among the other contenders, Grealish vs WHU looks good too, as does Gundo. But Gundo is also a big rotation risk this week having played 90 last. Grealish vs WHU is very hard to call. Could be a low scoring affair or a high scoring one depending on defensive mistakes. I think Cancelo is the best pick. He got his rest, now he gets a perfect fixture and a pretty much locked-in clean sheet so a high floor and a high ceiling considering how much he contributes to City's attack.

    Anything wrong with my reasoning?

I think it makes sense. What do you think about Sterling & Fernandes as options ?

I like Sterling. Would consider capping him if I had him. Fernandes' stats are not great though and he doesn't pass the eye test of late -- looks tired and more peripheral. I also think Southampton are tough opposition. Not a huge fan of him as (c) this week.

Solid reasoning, I’ve been hurt so many times by salah I’ve lost all confidence in going without him or not captaining so think I will play safe and just cap him or Bruno

The only thing wrong with your reasoning is that it takes too damn long to read.

But yeah, Cancelo makes a good case with potential returns at both ends of the pitch against a terrible SHU team.

      I'm going Cancelo again.

Did you get word of his benching before the deadline? Your post reads as if you did. Luckily for me, whilst I put the armband on Cancelo, I had Barnes as my vice.

If Mane is out, would you reconsider your cap pick to Salah?

If Mane is out (or even just not confirmed fit) its probably very risky to try swerving Salah (c) this week - he has braced against Villa, Palace, Man Utd, and now West Ham in his last 4 appearances without Sadio

I'll personally just gladly take a haul from a sub 6.0 asset if it comes in for Cancelo

Burnley could be missing Chris Wood which limits them further in attack so hopefully a good chance of a cleansheet - Unless Pep decides to start Stones/Laporte centre back pairing (Dias due a rest) - in which case - all bets are off & Burnley will probably score 1 goal from a set piece

Yeah but those teams are not Brighton. I'm not surprised he scored against any of those teams.

The reverse fixture against Brighton was a 1-1 draw - Salah got 6 points for an assist. Brighton are better away than they are at home. Again, for me, I just don't like capping against Brighton couple that with the fact that Salah has played 3 games in a week for 90 minutes each plus with City next, it just doesn't scream a huge haul to me.

The last time Salah played Brighton without Mane (barely 6 months ago) he got 2G 1A...

But definitely if you’re not feeling it DO NOT let anyone change your mind, the worst thing in this game is making someone else’s mistake - much easier to make your own I find 🙂

I personally think you may be overestimating the attacking upside here. He still has the issue of people not converting chances, and his one goal was a bit of a freak and outside the box.

The numbers say otherwise and the eye test says otherwise too. His xGI is 4.35. He has just 1g and 2a so far.

I took a hit in GW20 to bring him in against all advice because I watched him in GW19 and pinched myself and made myself vow to bring him in asap considering how involved he is.

We'll see. I'm willing to throw the dice this week because I'm not as convinced of Salah. Last time out in GW20, I couldn't argue against Bruno so I just went with the masses.

Statistically he’s over performing vs his XG by nearly 40% though with one goal from 0.64 XG in 14 starts (that’s around 0.05 XG per game)

He’s more of an XA man, with 2 assists from 3.7 XA

I agree with you. Cancelo was my bus team captain when I set it at the start of the GW. Switched it to Salah after his brace mostly due to fear but I'm going to go with my gut here and put it back on Cancelo. Burnley looks like an ideal fixture for both defensive and attacking returns, much like the West Brom game.

Folks who’ve been watching Liverpool games: is TAA improving his form?

    thoughts on this for captain?

A - Salah if Mane is out again. Salah unlikely to be rested and tends to haul more when Mane out
B - Sterling if Mane fit!

I'd go Sterling regardless. Rested Sterling is one of my favorite players to cap. He has scored every single week after being rested the week before this season.

He saved my last season by getting a mega haul right after a benching and nobody wanted to touch him.
