Kane makes immediate impact on Spurs return as Son breaks goal drought

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-0 WEST BROMWICH ALBION

  • Goals: Harry Kane (£11.0m), Heung-min Son (£9.7m)
  • Assists: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Lucas Moura (£6.6m)
  • Bonus: Hojbjerg x3, Kane x2, Son x2

Kane and able

Harry Kane (£11.0m) made a swift return to Jose Mourinho’s starting XI in Gameweek 23.

Having injured both ankles in the Gameweek 20 defeat to Liverpool, Mourinho first reckoned Kane could return for the FA Cup fifth round or in Gameweek 24.

The Spurs boss then hinted at a comeback for West Brom’s visit, which duly occurred. Kane lasted the full game against the Baggies, despite an early challenge which saw him down and holding an ankle for a brief moment.

Kane also brought his shooting boots to the Gameweek 23 clash, managing more efforts (five) than any other player on show.

It was his fifth shot that beat Sam Johnstone (£4.5m), putting Spurs a goal ahead after 54 minutes. Kane also created the joint-most chances at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in Gameweek 23, while starting the move that saw Heung-min Son (£9.7m) double Spurs’ lead in the 59th minute.

Late rise for Son

Kane released Lucas Moura (£6.6m) on the counter-attack as West Brom sought a quick equaliser.

The Brazilian slalomed between panicked Baggies defenders before teeing up Son, whose shot had too much power for Johnstone to keep out – despite the keeper getting a slight touch before the ball sailed into the net.

Son was taken off well into injury time but not before he completed a late 30th pass. That, added to a pass completion percentage of 85%, saw him make a late rise up the Bonus Points System standings to earn two bonus points.

The FPL midfielder had failed to get on the scoresheet since Gameweek 17 and was delighted that his partner-in-crime Kane had returned to the fold. On his team-mate, Son regaled:

He’s so, so important for us. We know that Harry’s one of the best strikers in the world. It was only a couple of games but we missed him a lot. He came back and scored straight away, so I think this is what we need. When I play with him it’s really enjoyable – I miss him [when he’s not available].

Mou sleepless nights for Sam

Mourinho was effusive in praise of his players’ “compromise” after Spurs ended a run of three straight league defeats. He stated:

I loved the compromise of the players. I loved the effort, the determination. The clear show to everyone how together they are and how much they were suffering with the bad results. That, for me, was the fundamental thing.

In the first half we could kill the game, we had big dominancy and we had a couple of good chances. But the compromise of the players, for me, is the most important thing.

On failing to score in the opening 45 minutes, the Portuguese manager added:

Frustration, yes, but (also) a feeling of confidence. I spoke with the players at half time, maybe one minute. I didn’t need much more than one minute, there was not much to say apart from, ‘we are in the right direction and if we play the same way, for sure in the second half we have to win the game’.

Sam Allardyce, unsurprisingly, was less pleased with the outcome. The Baggies boss spoke before the game about his side’s defensive issues, which he felt came to the fore again over the 90 minutes.

I’m still facing the same problems ten games in and those lapses in concentration keep hurting us. Harry Kane being alone in our box amazes me but there you go. Son and Harry Kane have scored because of our weaknesses there.

Seeing Harry Kane in our box unmarked – that lapse at this level just can’t happen. We should be stopping that at source. Then we let them go from their box to our box without putting a mark on any one.

We scored, it got disallowed, we scored again and that was disallowed but at least we scored two ‘goals’ here. If we get the right service in the box we’ve got a man [Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m)] who can score.

Until we shut the back door better life is going to be difficult for us. This is it now, the window is shut, we’ve got what we’ve got. We’ve got to start winning games and we won’t do that by keeping on losing. We need an undefeated run with more wins than draws in it.

Every time I speak to you I’m sick about talking about conceding those kind of goals. It’s another night where I’m not going to sleep too well.

West Brom’s problems in defence bode well for Manchester United assets in FPL, with the Red Devils arriving at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 24.

Spurs’ next two games are tough-looking away trips to Manchester City and West Ham. Mourinho’s men will have Double Gameweeks in some fashion from Gameweek 26 onwards, though that schedule depends on FA Cup results among other things.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Davies, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Aurier (Doherty 67′); Ndombele, Hojbjerg; Son (Scarlett 90+3′), Lucas Moura, Lamela (Bergwijn 73′); Kane.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-5-1): Johnstone; Townsend, Bartley, Ajayi, Peltier; Grant (Phillips 68′), Maitland-Niles, Sawyers (Yokuslu 77′), Gallagher, Snodgrass (M Pereira 79′); Diagne.

    Martinez
    Cancelo Stones Digne
    Son Salah Bruno Gundogan
    Bamford DCL Antonio

    Steer Coufal Bissouma Mitchell

    2 ft 5.0 itb

Steer to Pope and save another transfer to accomodate Kane next week is the plan. Gives me 6 DGW players.

    Any other obvious transfer needed?
    Thanks in advance.

Thinking of doing Steer> Pope myself. Mitchell> Digne also an option

Can't do much about Bissouma and Mitchell. Thinking having some of bench fodders doesn't hurt. Saves me some benching headache as well.

Mitchell to Digne on your side is a great move. Go for it.

Hi guys, hope you don't mind a question for the ones that have consistently done well in the game over the years and/or are doing well this season.

How much information do you consume every week in the form of podcasts and articles before making a decision on your transfers at the end of the week before the deadline? Does you opinion often change because of what you've listened to or read?

I ask because recently in the past 2 gameweeks I allowed myself to be deterred from my original plan and gut feeling by podcasts and that has cost me. Over the past 2 gameweeks I missed out on a 23pts and 19pts hauls respectively due to change of perspective due to podcasts. The week or so before that, I listened to my gut and was rewarded with 31pts haul thanks to my transfers.

So I am just curious how much you allow yourselves to be influenced by content created by others? Maybe just looking at the stats on the membership page on here should arguably be enough to make a decision that is entirely your own and hatch a plan.

      1. Dont listen to any podcasts. (They know just as little as me tbh)
      2. Just read injury tweets on here, no articles.

Benched DCL myself over Antonio (C). Owning Sterling brought me back in the game this week and am currently on 55 for this week with Bam and Dallas to go.

Appreciate the input Christina, good luck!

I always make my own plans. I do take in a ton of fantasy info for the week usually before I make a choice but the decision is always my own and it's in fitting with a larger strategic plan.

So far this season, whenever I have stuck to my own plan I have done well. Not sure why over the past 2 weeks I allowed myself to be distracted by podcasts. Do you write down your plans ahead of the gameweek and all the podcasts and articles you read to make sure that they are not overly-influenced by that content at the end?

No. But I usually do the bulk of my strategic planning the night after the last game of the week and before I listen to any podcasts.

So that by the time I'm listening, I already have an idea of what I want to do. Going into a podcast intending to absorb that data with no idea of what you're going to do is asking for trouble. Because a podcaster's advice is always highly tailored to their team and not yours. You have different priorities, you have different money ITB.

The stuff I'm looking for from a podcast is:
          - Differentials I didn't consider for the future (not this week)
          - Fixtures/injury news and the ramifications
          - Stats and analysis that could be decisive for captain (the only decision I tend to leave open until the last minute and probably why I'm so bad at it...)

Thanks Camzy. I always do go into the next gameweek with a plan in my head already and never go into in blindly. I find myself thinking about FPL whenever I have free time so there is always some plan hatching going on in my head!

The information I look to get from podcasts is similar to the stuff you've mentioned. I guess the problem comes when a differential pick is very much over-hyped on the podcasts/articles and makes me reconsider my own plan in an effort to make that risky move for a higher pay-out. I have chosen captains poorly now for 5 gwks in a row, regardless of whether I've gone for differential or template.

Appreciate your thoughts on all of this. Good luck in the coming weeks and the doubles! It will be fun navigating those 🙂

I never get swayed by podcasts/Twitter - I make my own captain decision way ahead of the GW in question and stick to it no matter what, my gut instinct is usually the right one.

I do read them / listen to them in case I've missed any vital information re: injuries, DGWs, etc... but I will only really allow myself to be influenced with team decisions if I'm genuinely 50-50 on Player A vs Player B and the content indicates a really good reason to go for one over the other.

You need to remember, FPL content makers get decisions wrong all the time too... e.g. even some of the most successful FPL managers of all time benched DCL this week.

Thanks RoC! Good song that one 🙂

I know ultimately we are all speculating and no-one knows the future with certainty (or uncertainty for that matter!) That is good advice to seek further opinions, etc when you are truly torn 50/50 between 2 players. Appreciate the input and good luck!

After years of playing FPL my plan now is to try and leave my decisions until the end of the week, as close to deadline as possible.

The other key thing with this is I like to look and think about my own decisions(s) BEFORE I listen to any podcast. Others people’s opinion will then either sure up your original thinking or make you consider an alternative. I have found that if you listen to others first you can just get an idea put in your head that is hard to shift.

I'm not a great player but I've noticed I score better when I shut out the noise and stop listening to others. I think it also depends who you listen to e.g. the guys on the FPL Wire pod have the finishes to call themselves experts, likewise some of the pro pundits on here with multiple top 10k finishes. There are a lot of chancers though so I think it's just a case of listening to those with proven pedigree.

Funny you should mention FPL Wire. It is their podcast that swayed me away from my original plans. I am not blaming them for anything in any way of course, they just do their job and speculate like we all do. I do enjoy their podcasts a lot but I feel like I may need to take a break for a while and see if my season improves.

Thank you all for thoughts. Interesting (and unsurprising really) to see that most of you that do well don't allow yourselves to be influenced too much by content created by others. I think I may reduce the amount of podcasts I listen to and follow my instinct a bit more. It has served me well in the past.

Appreciate the input and good luck to you all!

Not doing well but going to answer anyway 😛

I dont really listen to any podcast or read many articles. Watching couple of guys talking about any topic for 1hr or more is not my cup of tea, no matter how interesting or informative it is. (10-20mins max)

Injury or some tactical related article is what I would read at best. FFS tweets does the job in this case.

I do fall for some stuffs every now and then, I guess thats how we are designed. But majority of the weeks, I try to reduce the incoming noise until my decision is made.

Watching games and playing for fixtures is what I'm doing this year. Haven't followed numbers either.

Hi Stormibringer,i don't think someone must doing well or be a pro player to have a discussion with you.So i think that podcasts/fpl shows/and this forum are a really good thing in the community.I listen/watch 5-6 podcasts per week.I think the pleasure on podcasts/live fpl shows is mainly to have fun and enjoy your time and gather fpl informations that you will use when you sit down on piece of paper to decide by your own your decisions and your fpl strategy. The influence part is always in the game. All of us have some players that like/admire and follow them(i always follow some managers from Wigan2me league, some of them are usual posters here) and sometimes it's normal to not follow your instict or your study but go with someone else's opinion. This is normal and i find it beautiful.

Hi Wulfranian! Of course, I agree that this discussion can be for anyone who shows interest or feels like they have some good insight. Appreciate your input, it does offer a different viewpoint as someone who listens to even more podcasts than I do! Influence by others can be useful at times, especially when planning to make risky moves. As long as ultimately you feel like the decision you make is yours, then I suppose it is okay. Good luck!

Started consuming much more info on this site/comments this season as I am sat at home all day on my laptop working.

It's been a help for the DGW's but I'd say it's sometimes more of a hindrance as you're exposing yourself to lots more conflicting views.

One thing I am enjoying though is Andy @ Let's Talk FPL on YouTube. He's very insightful and his content is very good if you're not sure what path to go down.

I agree. There are some people that log on during the match to complain that they didn't bring the player they wanted to bring (and who just scored) because someone told them not to. Grinds my gears that mentality. Ultimately, you decide what to do and you need to own it

Make my own plans then will listen to the odd podcast to see if there's anything obvious I've missed.
Sure there's probably more than a few out there who have just religiously copied Andy's team but don't see that as being much fun.
Don't deep dive the stats as much as some of the "pundits" seem to as it often seems to be overkill.
Context I do play more aggressively than most (taken 32 pts hits so far) but works for me, Currently around 3k. My only top 100 finish saw me take 76 pts in hits. Something I don't think many podcasts/pundits etc would recommend.
Still a game so whole point is to enjoy playing it in the way you want to - not how others like to

Interesting discussion. I had my worst season last year (by a long way!) for a number of reasons, but I think the main one was I used twitter loads for FPL. Twitter is a bit of a bubble and you need to remember it's only a tiny number of players on there. I ended up getting caught up in the discussion on Twitter and making poor decisions and gambling on captains for example - something I would never normally do. I also listened to a lot of podcasts and I think I had information overload.

This season I ignore twitter and barely listen to any podcasts (mainly due to being too busy but sometimes listen in to Mark and AZ). I've been on here a lot more and used the stats in members area quite a bit. There's some really knowledgeable posters on here but also a lot of trolls so you also need to filter a lot of the information you get on here as well. Overall there is so much info on FPL now that I think limiting the amount of information you take in will actually help you, it's worked for me as having a better season this year and enjoying it a lot more.

Watching football and basing your decision's on that along with checking the odd stat is imo, the biggest reliant for picking your team. Watching someone play the game and seeing how he performs far out ways any stat you can find. Blackbox is the only podcast I listen to. Play your own game.

      1. Don't listen / read content in order to be influenced. Listen / read content in order to get ideas for further investigation or to get stats content to use (e.g. often there are people posting stats tables for free that use xG, xA, xGC data etc)

The above is why I like 'The Review' that BigManBakar posts. He puts the stats up and I can use them to make my own decisions. He does include his own views, but that is easy to ignore.

Two words, cry babies. Grow up and stop blaming others for your decisions. I've been in a similar position where I listened to BigMakBakar and made a costly mistake. But I blame myself not BigMan for his advice which was based on sound stats.

Podcasts are useful in your first couple of seasons to master the basics.
Once you are comfortable with the game mechanics of price market/ using transfers/ effective ownership/ chip strategies ....

then stay away from poscasts and stay away from FPL Twitter at all costs. Don't do RMTs on here as most respond with their own team in mind. Group-think is the worst thing about the FPL 'community'.

Both our Community Members and Open to All mini-leagues are currently in the top five in the world, and both have been number one recently.
But that is based on the top five managers in each mini-league, not on the other fifty thousand.
Most of the responses to RMT questions will not come from those top five managers, and they don't have as much time to work out the best moves for other people's teams as they do for their own.

It still suggests the quality of advice is higher then other forums if the top 5 have made it to number 1.

The general advice from our best players is worth listening to, but it is best to make your own plans first before considering this advice.
Other members of our community are never going to put the same time and effort into looking into the possibilities for your specific team as they do for their own.
The top five managers in our mini-leagues are all in the top 30 in the world, but the median positions of managers in these mini-leagues are only 750k - 800k. The chances that the responses to your RMT requests are from any of our top five managers are vanishingly small.

I have always been thinkin of my transfer for next week, from the deadline. Sometimes even one week after the first one too. Usually listene to some podcasts, but not this season and i have done not that good so maybe i should listen to then again? I try to function on instinct and reasoning and often with short, medium term. When i do well my gut is stronger and when im doing bad then my gut be comes weaker and i waver and do strange things.

Something all 3 of us were quite clear on before starting the FPL wire, we won't be spoonfeeding. We merely present the information available and encourage you to make the best decision. There is no right or wrong way in this game

What's important is to acknowledge that Twitter representes just a minor part of the players and players have the tendancy to brag and whine out loud but remain silent when things go wrong. So you get that feeling that the whle world is bitting you hard although it's just a minority.

On the other hand I think it's a bit unfair to blame the outcome of your decisions on too much podcast listening. I mean, we are all responsible for our own decision in the end.

What makes a podcast very valuable (bar all the info on fixtures, re-arrangements, data etc), is the DEBATE. You get different aproaches and insights from different players with different style of play. There's not a single great way to play the game, they are many.

Also, don't be too result-oriented. You need to acknowledge that good decisions sometimes result in a bad outcome but always look back at what made you take that decision, not the outcome. This is particularly true with captain choices.

I see so many posts from people basically implying they would have got more points this week had they not listened to other's advice in some form or another.

With all due respect, this post feels like a very sophisticated way of saying exactly the same thing.

I imagine that you probably listen to podcasts, read comments on here, look at twitter ordinarily. I bet that on previous weeks where you "went with your gut", you did actually read comments/stats/advice and heard podcast comments that reinforced your gut feeling, and were therefore somewhat influenced by these inputs, but are now choosing reflect on those decisions as purely your own "gut feeling".

These last two weeks, however, the points haven't gone your way and this may have coincided with times where podcasts opinions conflicted with your original plans. It was still your call whether or not to change your plans based on advice/opinion.

I feel more comfortable playing this game if I "own" the decision. Yes I take on board loads of advice, but at the end of the day I MAKE THE DECISION.

Finally, the luck factor means that even "correct" decisions/advice don't pay off. Always bear that in mind

With 2FT and locked on three City (Stones, Cancelo, Gundo), it feels like a good time to move to Sterling by losing Stones... not least because my ML rivals have Sterling and I'm 50pts ahead of them and I they will almost certainly captain him this week expecting me to be locked on the other three.

    How's this looking for DGW24?

    Areola(2)
    Cancelo(2) Tarkowski(2) AWB Maguire Coufal
    Bruno Sterling(2) Gundogan(2) Son
    Antonio

More bench problems but AWB/Maguire at WBA looks like a clean sheet and possible attacking returns

Bench: Bamford (ars), Soucek (WHU), Watkins (bha)

    Advice needed please.

I was halfway into building a bench to BB this week (did 2 transfers last week) that I am now thinking of backing out of.

I brought in Pope and Rudiger (good single fixture) last week for DGW24. I was going to do 2 further transfers (Mitchell to Lowton, Dale Stephens to Lookman) and then BB all 4 this week (i.e. Pope, Lowton, Rudiger, Lookman). Have triple City in the team itself.

But now having doubts about Burnley and not sure its even worth a BB? I could just use my single TF this week to simply swap Antonio for DCL, play him and Pope and forget about the BB altogether.

Sorry for long post. Appreciate any advice given.

Once you commit to a BB strategy, you have to follow through imo

BB is worth around 15 points, you look good to get that with that bench

      Go for it

    2. End of King Wilson

Lookman, when you bb ideally you want 15 players of dgw or some with great single fixtures, with preferably no teams against each other (ie lookman vs burnley def or dcl against city) because they would cancel out each other.

Just to clarify, don't you have other single game week players in 24 to bench and play these on the bench instead?

I've heard gw 26 still has a lot of unconfirmed fixtures so I'd wait for midweek to pass and decide again.

A little anecdote regarding the vagaries of Fantasy Football. A guy in my work's league absolutely bombed in GW21. His weekly rank was well into the 7m's, he fell from 80k to 230k overall and he also blew the decent monthly prize we play for (for which he had a seemingly unsurpassable lead). He was distraught 😀 The following week his one sub was Firmino (2 points), his weekly rank was 100k and he got 100k of those ranking places back 🙁

I shall remember this in gloomy times.

I would wait until all FA cup games are out of the way so you have a better idea of who plays twice in 26. That may bring up new options for you, etc. If Burnley get a double in 26 as well, then C looks okay.

I have burned so many points this season by poor captain and bench choices. Antonio (captain) and Gundo on the bench has killed what would otherwise have been a reasonably good gw. Goes to show that however good our fpl squads are a lot of points are won and lost by our captain and bench choices

Not criticising you but interested to know your thought process in benching Gundogan.

Its a valid question, and the simple answer is that with a wealth of options in my team he looked to be the fall guy. Antonio was an obvious pick and owners were just unlucky I feel. Playing Gundo ahead of Grealish might have been wise in hindset I guess, but a tough call.

There's no point in planning so much right now when FA Cup can change the whole strategy for the next few weeks.

Just for example - if United lose tomorrow Bruno becomes an easy sell after GW25.

      I agree.

Seems lots of people enjoy planning all out for double game weeks.

Didn't realise Kane was price locked, that really is ideal!

How likely are Everton to have a DGW25? Or is that not even an option?
