Kane makes immediate impact on Spurs return as Son breaks goal drought

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-0 WEST BROMWICH ALBION

  • Goals: Harry Kane (£11.0m), Heung-min Son (£9.7m)
  • Assists: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Lucas Moura (£6.6m)
  • Bonus: Hojbjerg x3, Kane x2, Son x2

Kane and able

Harry Kane (£11.0m) made a swift return to Jose Mourinho’s starting XI in Gameweek 23.

Having injured both ankles in the Gameweek 20 defeat to Liverpool, Mourinho first reckoned Kane could return for the FA Cup fifth round or in Gameweek 24.

The Spurs boss then hinted at a comeback for West Brom’s visit, which duly occurred. Kane lasted the full game against the Baggies, despite an early challenge which saw him down and holding an ankle for a brief moment.

Kane also brought his shooting boots to the Gameweek 23 clash, managing more efforts (five) than any other player on show.

It was his fifth shot that beat Sam Johnstone (£4.5m), putting Spurs a goal ahead after 54 minutes. Kane also created the joint-most chances at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in Gameweek 23, while starting the move that saw Heung-min Son (£9.7m) double Spurs’ lead in the 59th minute.

Late rise for Son

Kane released Lucas Moura (£6.6m) on the counter-attack as West Brom sought a quick equaliser.

The Brazilian slalomed between panicked Baggies defenders before teeing up Son, whose shot had too much power for Johnstone to keep out – despite the keeper getting a slight touch before the ball sailed into the net.

Son was taken off well into injury time but not before he completed a late 30th pass. That, added to a pass completion percentage of 85%, saw him make a late rise up the Bonus Points System standings to earn two bonus points.

The FPL midfielder had failed to get on the scoresheet since Gameweek 17 and was delighted that his partner-in-crime Kane had returned to the fold. On his team-mate, Son regaled:

He’s so, so important for us. We know that Harry’s one of the best strikers in the world. It was only a couple of games but we missed him a lot. He came back and scored straight away, so I think this is what we need. When I play with him it’s really enjoyable – I miss him [when he’s not available].

Mou sleepless nights for Sam

Mourinho was effusive in praise of his players’ “compromise” after Spurs ended a run of three straight league defeats. He stated:

I loved the compromise of the players. I loved the effort, the determination. The clear show to everyone how together they are and how much they were suffering with the bad results. That, for me, was the fundamental thing.

In the first half we could kill the game, we had big dominancy and we had a couple of good chances. But the compromise of the players, for me, is the most important thing.

On failing to score in the opening 45 minutes, the Portuguese manager added:

Frustration, yes, but (also) a feeling of confidence. I spoke with the players at half time, maybe one minute. I didn’t need much more than one minute, there was not much to say apart from, ‘we are in the right direction and if we play the same way, for sure in the second half we have to win the game’.

Sam Allardyce, unsurprisingly, was less pleased with the outcome. The Baggies boss spoke before the game about his side’s defensive issues, which he felt came to the fore again over the 90 minutes.

I’m still facing the same problems ten games in and those lapses in concentration keep hurting us. Harry Kane being alone in our box amazes me but there you go. Son and Harry Kane have scored because of our weaknesses there.

Seeing Harry Kane in our box unmarked – that lapse at this level just can’t happen. We should be stopping that at source. Then we let them go from their box to our box without putting a mark on any one.

We scored, it got disallowed, we scored again and that was disallowed but at least we scored two ‘goals’ here. If we get the right service in the box we’ve got a man [Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m)] who can score.

Until we shut the back door better life is going to be difficult for us. This is it now, the window is shut, we’ve got what we’ve got. We’ve got to start winning games and we won’t do that by keeping on losing. We need an undefeated run with more wins than draws in it.

Every time I speak to you I’m sick about talking about conceding those kind of goals. It’s another night where I’m not going to sleep too well.

West Brom’s problems in defence bode well for Manchester United assets in FPL, with the Red Devils arriving at the Hawthorns in Gameweek 24.

Spurs’ next two games are tough-looking away trips to Manchester City and West Ham. Mourinho’s men will have Double Gameweeks in some fashion from Gameweek 26 onwards, though that schedule depends on FA Cup results among other things.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Davies, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Aurier (Doherty 67′); Ndombele, Hojbjerg; Son (Scarlett 90+3′), Lucas Moura, Lamela (Bergwijn 73′); Kane.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-5-1): Johnstone; Townsend, Bartley, Ajayi, Peltier; Grant (Phillips 68′), Maitland-Niles, Sawyers (Yokuslu 77′), Gallagher, Snodgrass (M Pereira 79′); Diagne.

Apologies guys, haven't been able to get on for a while...

What's the latest thinking for all chips guys?

        Could it be something like:

        WC 25
        BB 26
        FH 29
        TC whenever

That is a perfectly fine strategy. Alternatively (depending on your team of course), you could navigate the upcoming weeks with FTs, have a good squad in 26 for BB. Then dead-end 29 and WC out of it in 30. TC whenever

This is my plan as I've already used my FH.

Should be able to get 12-13 DGW players for a BB in 26, then build towards 7-8 starters in BGW29, before wildcarding in 30.

Quite impressive really the case of Gundo. Finished the gameweek on 13pts when he was on a -1 at HT. Just stands to show that when people comment "captain fail" at half-time of games when their captain has done nothing so far, isn't necessarily the end of it. A lot can change in the other 45 mins of a game

Honestly, a lot depends on your upcoming plans I think and whether you will WC in 25 in prep for 26. I personally am looking at Lowton as a cheaper alternative since I will try to navigate 26 with FTs and need the funds. Most likely, I will go for no Burnley defence this week and ride it out.

Not keen on that. You will want Son in the upcoming fixtures after City, especially with their likely double in 26. I also fancy City to keep a CS against Spurs this week

What people seem not to realise... if you´re taking a hit to bring in DGW players you have to add the cost of the hit to the opportunity cost of another transfer. What is the opportunity cost of another transfer? The points the player you´re transfering out or benching for will earn. From what I have seen there are loads of squads with loads of playable assets, with great fixtures. Transfering Antonio out for DCL when Antonio is playing SHU and DCL playing 2 really strong defenses? Bringing in Pope and benching De Gea or MArtinez both playing WBA and BHA? Grealish out for Foden, a clear rotation risk player? Bringing in Areola? Really? For me, 3 City players are more than enough. BUR has concede in the last 4 matches and has 2 clean sheets in the last 10 (one vs LIV) and EVE has really tough fixtures for their attacking assets. The only player I would consider is Digne, but only with the outlook going forward.

                  Excellent post.

The question is: Which 3 City assets?

I have Dias, Cancelo and Sterling, but can see them conceding at least once in this DGW.

I think Gundo & Sterling for sure. Sterling yesterday was City´s captain and Pep started the post match PC praising "his captain" for the incredible match and leadership. Fode for example might play as well but again, with an incredible performance from him Pep still has something to say about his game and improvement etc. And then another defensive asset. I think this is my route, but 2 def + Gundo/Sterling might be good as well.

Personally I got hit hard by not gambling on Antonio or Justin in the last double, and I'd like to rectify that. The chance of a move paying off in a double is much higher.

Yeah, but as you´ve just said its a gamble. One thing is taking a hit (or two) for taking out injured players or eventually ones on the verge of starting a really tough run of fixtures, but to replace players with form & a great fixture (Antonio for example) its just doesnt make sense. Can it pay up in the end? Yes, ofc but most of the times, wont.

To some degree, it more depends on what your plan with the WC is and how much of a long term transfer the one for a hit is. Yes, any of these players can outscore the dgw ones, won't be the first and certainly won't be the last time. But if in for example 5/6 gameweeks your dgw player outscore the sgw player you transfered out by more than four points, it's a good transfer.

People talking of doubles in GW 26. How will extra games be generated? Is it from yet to be rearranged games that were postponed earlier in the season? Or is there an extra source of fixtures from future game weeks?

Games that were cancelled earlier and if they go through in the fa cup then they'll miss gameweek 29 so those fixtures get put into 26

Right. So only if both of the teams playing in a Gw29 match get through to the 5th round, will there be a possibility of it being brought forward to GW26?

Even if one team from that 29 fixture goes through, because who else would they play? Unless we see massive upsets and all premier League teams get knocked out, not even possible in most cases as it's an all premier League tie so someone has to go through

Does this make sense with no FH?

GW25: Navigate 11 DGWers with FTs and TC Kane
                    GW29: Dead end with FTs
                    GW30: Use WC
GWx: Use BB for future DGW

I think 26 will likely be the last big DGW, so arguably the best time to use the BB. Having said that, BB a single gameweek with decent fixtures can work just as well in some cases

sure. guess it depends what gives more bonus in 26, BB or TC.

probably go with the TC myself as easier to hold WC.

                    A) Holding to Lowton (already have Mee)
                    B) Holding to Digne
                    C) Barnes to Rodriguez
                    D) McGoldrick to Richarlison (will have DCL)

I'm planning on WC in GW25 so I can afford to take a bit of a punt this week like double Burnley defence or 2 Everton attackers. Thanks

Arsenal, City, Leicester, Chelsea, Tottenham, United, all play european games between Gameweek 25 and 26 which makes me think activating your WC in 25 with the propect of Bench boosting in 26 is very very tricky. Rotation will be big and injury risks/fatigue quite present too.

City will be a problem here, the rest should be fine. No one will buy Arsenal players as they have no DGW. Chelsea's ones aren't worth buying too due to tough fixtures and nobody being nailed. Spurs will play 2nd team in UEL. Leicester and United I only have 1 player each.

Not intrested in Arsenal or Chelsea at all for the double.

Also I cant afford to BB City, United, Spurs & Leicester players as they cost so much they would anyways be a part of my starting 11.

BB is used for the cheaper players who wont have European games and will start both games.

It's so embarrassing that two supposedly top level officials can look at something 20+ times and give a red card that is immediately rescinded once reviewed.

                      What move is better?

                      A - Johnstone -> Pope

                      B - Grealish -> Sterling

                      C - Pereira -> Foden

                      Have:

                      Martinez/Johnstone
                      Cancelo/Justin/Targett/Dallas/Mee
                      Salah/Fernandes/Grealish/Gundo/Pereira
                      DCL/Bamford/Antonio

Morning! Which do you think is the best option? Whatever happens I'm trying to keep money free to fund Kane for double in 26. I currently have 4.2 ITB.

                      A.
                      24 - Chilwell to Lowton
                      25 - Antonio to Ings
                      26 - DCL to Kane

                      B.
                      24 - Chilwell to Cancelo
                      25 - Antonio to Adams
                      26 - DCL to Kane

I seem to be the only person in my ML that doesn't own Bamford. How many points does he get tonight? I'd take a goal and no BPs to be fair.
