Rodgers offers Vardy fitness update as well-owned Justin hits century of FPL points

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Leicester City

Bonus Points: James Justin (£5.2m) x3, Max Kilman (£4.0m) x2. Rui Patricio (£5.3m) x1 Nelson Semedo (£5.2) x1 Jonny Evans (£5.5m) x1

James Justin‘s (£5.2m) ever-growing army of owners emerged the happiest from a drab encounter between Wolves and Leicester.

Just to prove how turgid the match was, it involved fewer shots on target (four) than players who received bonus points (five).

Four of those who received extra points were defenders. The other was home keeper Rui Patricio (£5.3m).

News Justin

Leicester full-back Justin has had a fine time of it over the last six matches, with four clean sheets, a goal and eight bonus points.

He backed up Gameweek 22’s season-best 15-point haul with a nine-pointer at Molineux – a pleasant welcome present for the 192,532 new managers who had pushed his ownership levels up to 29.7% before kick-off.

That consolidated his status as Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) most popular defender, and only West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell (£5.7m) now has more points (106 v 101).

Justin contributed nothing going forward at Wolves – not a single shot taken, chance created or cross delivered as he spent his day reining in Adama Traore’s (£6.0m) forays down the Foxes’ left flank.

No Shot, Sherlock

Wolves worked Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) just the once, albeit with the best chance of the game, when Fabio Silva (£5.2m) forced him into a fine save from close in.

That prompted manager Nuno Espirito Santo to indulge in a touch of criticism of his striker:

Fabio has to do better. He (Schmeichel) did a great save, it was a fantastic save, but he has to do better.

But there’s a reason why only four teams have a worse goalscoring record than Wolves (23), and it’s more to with the manager’s defensive instincts than Silva’s profligacy.

His intentions were there for all to see on Sunday, with Espirito Santo utilising a five-man defence that sat deep and wide to negate Leicester’s attacking threat.

It worked. All three of the visitors’ shots on target came from range and from James Maddison (£7.4m), but none went beyond glorified back pass status, handing Patricio one of the easiest save points of his FPL career.

Welcome Back Boys

Two players made returns at Molineux.

Jamie Vardy (£10.0m), who had lost more than a million managers since undergoing a hernia operation following a Gameweek 19 victory over Chelsea, was handed 29 minutes from the bench and very nearly won it late on.

He flashed a header narrowly wide – an opportunity not officially designated as a big chance, although it was certainly large enough.

But Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers was more concerned with the minutes than the miss:

I’d love Jamie Vardy to play every minute of every game, but we can’t do that. Giving him half-hour was about right because he brings that movement. We can look to see if we can get some more game-time into him on Wednesday.

That would mean midweek FA Cup action at home to Brighton. Should he come through that unscathed, a visit from Liverpool in Saturday’s early kick-off could well mark his first start in five Gameweeks.

The striker is currently one of three Leicester players in the top 20 for transfers-in, although it should be mentioned that Vardy has not scored in the league since Gameweek 14’s win at Spurs just before Christmas.

Espirito Santo, meanwhile, gave wing-back Jonny (£5.4m) the first 45 minutes on his return from a serious knee injury:

It was decided by him, by us, by the medical staff, by the doctor that operated on him. With him returning, we have to be very careful. The decision was made before the game started. It was a decision based on our future, how we have to preserve a player like Jonny.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Kilman, Coady, Dendoncker; Jonny (Hoever 45), Neves, Moutinho, Semedo; Neto (Gibbs-White 88), A Traoré; Willian José (Fábio Silva 61).

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Soyuncu, Evans, R Pereira; Tielemans, Choudhury; Barnes, Maddison, Perez (Albrighton 61); Iheanacho (Vardy 61).

Hello chaps, help appreciated - which approach seems best? WC, TC and BB left.

    A) BB for DGW24 with Martinez (bri), Bamford (ars), Son (mci), TAA (lei). WC in DGW25 with 3 Leeds and 2 Southampton. TC in DGW26 (bench the Leeds/Southampton players who will play in BGW29).

    B) Bench the above players for DGW24. WC in DGW25 with 1-2 Leeds/Southampton. BB in DGW26, try and scrape together players for BGW29 afterwards, use TC at a later date.

I'm thinking A? Should maximise points for both DGW24 and DGW25 (presumably those going for BB26 will not want many Leeds/Southampton players in on WC25), TC for DGW26 which will help vs. BBers, and leaves me with a much stronger squad going into BGW29?

    Cheers

Those that have used your BB and retained your FH, whats your plan for navigating the doubles?

Im looking at using free transfers with the odd hit to optimise my 11 for 26 and the DGWs in between and then wildcarding out of any dross in 27.

I’ve had benching nightmares since using BB in 19 missing out on points on bench so want to focus on my starting 11 with a solid playing sub.

    Thoughts?

Navigating with FTs and couple of hits if required.

I’ve used WC and BB. Got FH and TC left. Seeing how the FA cup results effect the future fixtures then take it from there. Not a fixed plan of when to use FH yet, TC will be used in 26 very likely.

    Meslier

    Gündogan - Son - Fernandes - Salah
    Bamford - Antonio - Adams

The old chestnut - is anyone planning on captaining Salah more than once in the next 7 gameweeks?

    24 lei
    25 EVE
    26 shu + CHE
    27 FUL
    28 wol
29 blank (Currently CHE but will be pulled into 26 if Chelsea beat barnsley)
    30 ars

GW27 looks nice (although SHU, BUR, WBA, BHA all looked similarly nice & he managed a whopping 0G 0A between them)

And whilst he (probably) has that double in 26... so do many others - including (probably) Kane, Bruno, Sterling, Gundo etc

GW31-38 looks a bit more dangerous to go without when he has 7x "nice" fixtures in 8 gameweeks (AVL, lee, NEW, SOU, wba, bur, CPL)

    Time for Salahxit again?

Thing with Salah is he needs 1/2 games to find his form and then he'll be a good captain candidate vs almost everyone. I even thought about captaining him vs City had he done well vs Brighton.
25, 27 and 28 are good fixtures. Only DGWers make him less appealing tbh. Unless I really need the funds to fit both KdB (when he's back) and Kane, I'd keep him.

      • 7 Years

These are the exact reasons why I sold him before the City game. I don't see him as a captain option. Ofc, he can haul against anyone, but so can other premium options. He is far away from his recognisible form and with selling him I can make important upgrades in the rest of my squad. And there is absolutely no way I would bench a 12.5m player, like some other people here. He'll get back into my team after my WC in 31.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

Going without until GW31 certainly does look to have merits...

Even if he's hitting the hallowed 7 PPG from GW24-30 that's still just touching ~50 points - surely plenty of options out there that could get 35-45 points without too much bother in those same gameweeks

(He's on 7 PPG season to date, and was at about 6.5 PPG last season)

        1. aleksaa2
          • 7 Years

I am a person who values fixtures more than form and the name of the player.

Therefore with not really liking their schedule until gw31, I don't see him rotting in my team, just so I can say I own Salah. To me that is more worrying about player's EO and making excuses "oh but he is Salah, he is essential" than being open to other in form players and getting/"chasing" points from less expensive players, who can bring you more than him.

The last sentence is also the reason why I don't get other players who don't captain cheaper options like Grealish, Gundo, Bamford etc. just because they are 6/7m. Hypothetically speaking if Bamford was priced as Kane or Vardy, he'd probably be the most captained player in the game.

I agree with the view on PPG, money wise Salah + Bissouma= Son + Barnes + 0.5 and this is what I consider as a major upgrade in your team.

And by just looking at the fixtures until gw30/31, you can find very good replacements for him from Villa, Leicester, Spurs and Everton.

The time was last week, really.

At this point, I think I'm just gonna keep. Honestly, the best midfielder to buy looks like Raphinha at the moment (other than the usual suspects - Fernandes, Gundo, Grealish).

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

Not sure I'd agree time was last week... he was a massive risk not to own going into Brighton with that captaincy inflated ownership - he blanked - but even if he HAD taken one (or both) of his two big chances in that game i think the question would still have needed to be asked about the next 7x gameweeks

Bruno, Sterling, Son, Gundo, Grealish, Soucek, Raphina... plenty of options out there with a better next 7 gameweeks & much better form

It's never for the fainthearted getting rid of Salah though, hugely uncomfortable position to put oneself into - GW27 would be proper behind the sofa time

Ah I meant this week (City game). However, I recall having that captaincy discussion with you on Salah vs Brighton and I had my doubts already... (c) Cancelo wasn't a huge win but it was the difference between a red and a green arrow last week.

But yeah, Salah is definitely the weakest link in my midfield currently. Considering Salah > Raphinha next week seriously in order to fund Antonio > Kane for GW26 (if that gets confirmed).

Ya - think at the minute I'm leaning towards gambling that he doesn't score more than 50-ish points GW24 - GW30

Then look to get him back for GW31 as probably perma cap for that last 8 game stretch

So he'll probably brace vs. Leciester on Saturday morning lol

Sigh yeah bloody Salah. He always manages to remind you that he can score a hatful at any point.

Keeping for now ; Liverpool have a full week with the new boys, it's quite possible they'll be back to trying to play with defenders from this GW which should free up system wise the midfield and TAA. Liverpool will either hit form again or the new boys will flounder and they'll revert to Hendo/Fab.

Vardy might enjoy testing a debutant centreback - they’ll know they’ve been in a game

Want to sell him for Rashford with WBA (A) this week. He's just not on it at the moment.

Thoughts on Triple Captaining Bamford for GW 25?

    Leeds playing Wolves and Southampton

Wolves don't tend to concede many and surely Southampton will get back close to their defensive form of pre-Xmas at some stage now Vestegaard back?

Got him and will probably default to him anyway. But wouldn't be surprised if Bruno outscores him.

Thinkng abaout it. But with City's form, highly unlikely I'd not captain Sterling, especially if he's benched vs Swansea.

No chance. Alladyce will park a 10 man bus, Bruno has looked out of form for weeks.

Not too worried about a WBA bus to be honest. They're useless. Bruno scored well last couple of games and Pogba is now injured too.

    which one for first sub;

    Antonio - SHU
    Soucek - SHU
    Grealish -bha
    Watkins -bha

Currently a toss up between Soucek and Watkins but would rather not either - prefered Soucek being suspended

      Probably Watkins. Brighton decent defensively

    Martinez Forster
    Maguire Dias Stones Cresswell Mee
    Raphinha Salah Bruno Grealish Grundo
    Watkins Antonio DCL

    Best option here?

A Forster to Pope and play ahead of Martinez(-4)
    B Maguire to Digne(-4)
C no hit and go with 5 dgw players

Any help would be much appreciated:

    Pope
    Dias, Stones, Digne, Cresswell
    Salah, Bruno, Grealish, Gündogan
    DCL, Antonio

    Martinez, Watkins, Dallas / Soucek

Can I afford to hold my ft? Maybe Watkins to Bamford? Stones to Cancelo? (I'm willing to keep Soucek, I guess)

    Should I.... thanks for advice

    a) get another DGW player (Dias - have Canc and Gund)
    b) save the transfer to have 2FTs to do Pope+Antonio> 4.0 + Kane next week

Hey guys, I have WC and TC left. Was planning to do Robbo > Dias this week but should I roll my transfer or play my WC in GW25?

    Pope
    Stones - Robbo - Coufal
    Salah - Bruno - Soucek - Gundo
    Antonio - Bamford - DCL

    Martinez - Justin - Raphinha - Dallas
