Five-time top 1k finisher on Double Gameweek players, captaincy and chip strategy

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman, reveals his team plans for Double Gameweek 24 and beyond.

Gameweek 23 has drawn to a close and it went pretty well for me, as I ended on a total of 76 points.

However, with the fixtures coming thick and fast, focus has already turned to the forthcoming doubles. We’ll find out more once this week’s FA Cup fifth-round ties are complete, but for now, we at least know who will play twice in Gameweeks 24 and 25.

With all of my chips still intact, it’s going to be pretty exciting, but I’m also fully aware that it’s a pivotal stage of the season which I need to get right.

So, in this my latest column, I’m going to note down some thoughts on the teams involved in this week’s Double Gameweek and also outline my plans moving forward.

For context, here is how I’m currently set up, with two free transfers:

    1. BB this GW- Forster/ Brew -> Pope/ (Bamford/ Watkins, 6.9m) -4.
    WC in 25/26.
    2. Save FT or just Forster-> Pope.

    Martinez.
    Cresswell, Stones, Cancelo, Mee, Digne.
    Salah, Gundogan, Fernandes.
    Antonio, DCL.
    Forster, Son, Soucek, Brewster,
1ft, 3.9m ITB. WC, BB left from the chips.

Thinking it may be a good time to BB and focus more long term with WC in 25 or 26.

If Antonio is confirmed out before this week deadline, this can help my bench headache.

Where is the idea that he may miss out coming from?
He was 'touch and go' for midweek.

Surely just rested for the cup. They need him for the weekend!

The idea is he flagged and not in the yesterday lineup.

Yes, you can say he may be only rested but at least it doesn't mean he has 0% chance to be out in the coming PL game.

Quotes are "I hope [he is fit]. I do not think it is too bad. I will have to wait and see. Obviously he is a concern if he did not play tonight. We will see how he gets on in the next few days."

To me it sounds like a 50/50.

I agree with the flag % - think it’s more like 75/25 based on that quote

    My XI for this week

    Areola
    Cancelo Stones Cresswell Lowton Tete
    Sterling(c) Bruno Grealish Bowen
    Watkins

    Martinez Antonio Raphinha F.Silva

    8.3m ITB, 1 FT

Plan is to save, and do Antonio+Cresswell->Kane+ Dallas for free, and my XI for 25 will be

    Areola
    Cancelo Dallas (c) Lowton Tete
    Sterling Bruno Grealish Raphinha
    Kane Watkins

    Martinez Stones Bowen F.Silva

    4.3m ITB

For DGW 26, I'm willing to do up to -8 to get a decent XI. Bowen to Son the most likely nailed-in transfer.

I also keep an eye out for BGW 29. After DGW26, I should have 4 BGW29 players (Areola, Tete, Dallas, Raphinha). I'll probably get 3 more players between 26 and 29 and field 7 for the blank.

Unlikely, but we will likely know the blanks, which in turn can give us a decent estimate on who gets a double in 26.

  5. Alisson WondHaaland

I have Chilwell and 2FTs. So the 'obvious' plan is to get rid of him for a Burnley defender, but looking at my XI for this week Im not sure if I really need a Burnley defender.

    My XI:
    Sanchez/ Mccarthy
    Coufal Cancelo Stones
    Son Salah Bruno Gundo
    Watkins Antonio DCL

Theres no-one there I really want to bench this week. The issue is, sure it'd be nice to have a DGW Burnley asset, but between now and GW 30 (when I plan to WC) I wont be playing him for any week apart from GW 24 and maybe 25. Im thinking it would be more valuable to think ahead and target a GW 26 player who also has good fixtures before and afterwards.

    So, best move? Chilwell to...

    A) Shaw
    B) Justin
    C) Rudiger
    D) Konsa
    E) Lowton

    1. De Gea is GOAT

I was interested in him. He is a bit pricey considering how good Justin is, but if I plan things out and budget seems to be ok then I could go for him

Any money in the bank? I’d get Pope if you can afford. Or even Son -> Sterling(c), financed by Stones/Cancelo -> a BUR defender

      1. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

I think Pope is a stretch. Im happy with my keepers and Mccarthy should have 2 DGWs coming up so Im holding him. Im not too keen on the City switcheroo either since it costs too many transfers and there are quite a few moves I have in mind ahead of DGW 25 and 26

      2. Alisson WondHaaland
        • 8 Years

And also Chilwell is a far a bigger issue than the luxury of getting rid of my GK or a City defender

    Pieter Rudiger Cancelo (Justin, Lewis)
    Salah Fernandes Gundo SON (Soucek)
    Antonio Bamford Dcl
    (0 ft and 3.8mn itb)

Any option below worth a -4 hit? Any other suggestions welcome

    A) Forster to Pope (Play Pope DGW 24 and Mccarthy DGW 25)
    B) Son to Sterlin

Son to sterling. If you consider the point potential for each move, this one has by far the most upside. I would wait for the far cup match, if sterling plays 90 mins then I’d maybe release consider becuase he may not start both games in the double.

Best move here? Think it makes sense to WC next week so only 1 week to consider.

    A) Mitchell -> DIGNE (bench Bellerin)
    B) Mitchell -> MEE (bench Bellerin)
    C) Bellerin & Martinelli -> LOWTON & RODRÍGUEZ (-4) (bench Watkins)

    POPE
    CANCELO, Coufal, Bellerin
    STERLING(c), GUNDO, Salah, Bruno
    DCL, Bamford, Watkins

    Forster, Targett, Mitchell, Martinelli

B- I think with Tarkowski (sic?) instead of Mee.

Yeah I think so. WC next week with 3 LEE for their DGW, then lost 1 with a FT and 2 of them (AVL) to be my BB in 26, which I think probably works better than a BB this week of Forster, Mitchell, Targett & Martinelli (pre transfers)

Good idea. Will see how the rest of the fixtures go midweek.
Have 0 Leeds here and thinking BB this week and WC next week may be a good option.

BB this week would be Martinez, Son, Soucek + 6.9m for a striker (-4). Not sure if it's going to be worth it.

Hi all. Completely stuck here as have two free transfers and don't want to waste them. I only have 0.1 itb, so can't upgrade just a single player and no value in Forster, ESR or Mitchell. Have only triple captain left and would like to have Kane for Antonio by GW 26.
    Team is
    Martinez Forster
    Cancelo Stones Digne (Justin Mitchell)
    Salah Bruno Sterling Grealish (ESR)
    DCL Bamford Antonio
    Thanks

Thanks. Yes I can do that and then Antonio to Kane following week within budget. Prefer Sterling over Gundo, but probably Gundo more likely to play twice? I can also do Antonio to a punty Barnes pick with Wood out, and then Barnes to Kane next week! Tho assumes no other fires to be put out. I guess I should wait to see DGW in 26 to check using mote than 1 FT sensible.

What is everyone's plan on how to get KDB for DGW26?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

I plan not to. Gundog started this run of form before KDB got injured so he may well continue on fire alongside him. It would have to be a combination of Gundog drying up and Salah underwhelming for me to bring in KDB assuming he's firing, but that would take a couple of GW's observation to make that call.

Not for me. If I had my WC, I'd take Cancelo, Gundog and Sterling, but as it is I have Dias, Cancelo and Gundog. Changing things around would require 2FT or a hit, and I always have urgent business elsewhere. For now I'm content to carry on in the belief that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

        yeh fair enough
I do have 2ft but no leeds players either so need careful planning
Soucek vs SHU looks like a play so easily go without Gundogan BUT worried about the rank drop if he hauls
Would probably move Soucek out for Gundogan (ahead of Grealish) which means Stones out for Lowton or Dallas

You wouldn't want Lowton long term though. If I lost Cancelo or Dias, I'd fear I'd lose out in the long term as City will rotate defenders less than midfielders and their clean sheet record doesn't look like drying up. As I say, it might be different if I had my WC, but I have to think long term and there seems no reason not to see those 2 as in for the rest of the season.

What I'm thinking as well. Saka comes in for antonio in case he's injured.

Will have 2 fts for next gw. Hoping to save my wc if i can have a good team for gw25 and 26 with a couple of hits.

        Cheers bud.

    Martinez (Forster)
    Cancelo, Stones, Coufal (Dallas, Douglas)
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Gundogan, Grealish
    DCL, Bamford (Antonio)

With 2FT + 5.1 itb plan was to transfer:
    Forster + Douglas > Pope + Digne
    and BB this week

Now that Antonio is flagged what should I do? Stick to plan? Ignore DGW24 and use funds to get Kane ahead of time?

Have you actually watched the game. Those two goals could have easily been scored by Rodri. Would you buy him?

Not sure if its worth a hit tbh. Don't see sterling playing 2 full games. Salah and stones could outscore sterling and the def.

    Martinez (Johnstone)
Cancelo / Stones / Coufal (Rudiger / Dallas)
    Salah / Bruno / Son / Grealish / Soucek
    DCL / Antonio (Bamford)

    2FT £3.1m ITB

I have to get Gundogan in but who for lads? Logic says Soucek but I’m considering Son or Grealish too...

Maybe Coufal to a DGWer too.

I'm planning to get him in this week and BB if no injuries come up during FA cup. Can switch him to Kane in 26 or leave him in my team as fixtures going forward are good.

      Areola (Fabianski)
      Mee Lowton Stones Keane (Coufal)
      Rashford Fernandes Gundogan Sterling (Soucek)
