How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Double Gameweek 24

The top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers invested rather modestly in the transfer market during the build-up to Double Gameweek 24.

With Manchester City, Everton, Burnley and Fulham all facing two fixtures, it appears that Double fever did not hit particularly strong either in terms of squad set-up or chip usage.

From the template of most-owned players at this level, just six from a possible 15 were from those four Double Gameweek clubs.

As you can see from the matrix above, the defence was where most of the Double Gameweek investment occurred.

João Cancelo (£6.1m) remains the most-popular defender among top 10,000 managers, owned by 56.9% as of Saturday’s deadline.

John Stones (£5.2m) and Ruben Dias (£6.1m) complete a trio of Manchester City stoppers among the top-five in this position.

The former remains the second-most fashionable defender in the top 10k but Dias’ stock is falling slightly at this level.

He was owned by 42.1% of the top 10k in Gameweek 23; a figure that fell to 38.2% for his first benching of the campaign against Spurs.

Unsurprisingly, James Justin (£5.1m) has dropped out of the top-five drastically following his midweek knee injury.

The Leicester man was in 54.6% of top 10k teams when the previous deadline passed.

Ahead of two fixtures in Double Gameweek 25, Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) appears to have been a popular replacement, firing himself back into the top-five most popular top 10k defenders with 51.9% ownership.

Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) has seen his stock fall once again, helped this time by Burnley’s Double Gameweek.

Nick Pope (£5.5m) replaces the Southampton goalkeeper in the matrix of most-owned players among the top 10k, although Emiliano Martínez (£5.2m) has tightened his control at this level.

58.5% of the top 10k owned him for Gameweek 23 and he earned a rise of 2.9 percentage points between the two most recent deadlines.

Ilkay Gündogan (£6.0m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m) are the only template assets among midfielders and forwards to represent one of Manchester City, Everton, Burnley or Fulham.

And what particularly interests is how the top 10k have responded to Calvert-Lewin’s FA Cup hamstring injury.

Latest FPL injury news on Calvert-Lewin, Pope, Dias, Antonio and other key assets

Carlo Ancelotti ruled the forward out of the meeting with Fulham on Sunday, meaning Calvert-Lewin effectively faces just one fixture in Double Gameweek 24.

That the Toffees are likely to enjoy another Double Gameweek soon seems to have influenced the widely-taken decision to hold Calvert-Lewin.

He was in 47.9% of top 10k squads for Gameweek 23, his ownership at this level falling only as far as 45.9% for Double Gameweek 24.

The captaincy statistics show us how much of a differential Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) can be this week.

Despite not featuring among the top-five most-popular midfielders in the top 10k, he was behind only Gündogan for total armbands in Double Gameweek 24.

The German was overwhelmingly popular skipper, rewarding his 50.4% backing with 19 points in a 3-0 win over Spurs.

But Sterling managed to get himself at least an assist at the Etihad Stadium, which could help him rival Gündogan by the end of the round.

As things stand, the budget midfielder is awaiting an assessment for a groin problem and could be a doubt to face Everton on Wednesday evening.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) managed to convince 9.7% of the top 10k to captain him despite facing just one match in Double Gameweek 24.

That is hardly a surprise, considering West Bromwich Albion have conceded at least twice in each of their last eight Premier League matches.

Meanwhile, the clamour for a Pope captaincy did not amount to too much among the top 10k.

1.9% backing is certainly more than we would normally expect for a goalkeeper, even one playing two favourable opponents, but it was only good enough for fourth-place among the top 10k’s favourite captains.

CHIP USAGE OVERALL

FPL managers gave the chips some consideration for Double Gameweek 24, although less so in the top 10k.

As you can see from the charts above, 3.2% of worldwide Wildcards were deployed this weekend.

2.5% deployed their Triple Captain while a similar number put their Bench Boost into action.

By comparison, the top 10k were less enthusiastic.

Just 2% went for a new squad, 1.6% went for an enhanced armband and only 1.5% had enough faith in their substitutes to pull the trigger on a Bench Boost.

Interesting then that not one of the top 6 in the world at the start of this week's games captained Gundogan and two picked Sterling instead of him even though they had both players in their teams. Evidently you are not in the world top 6!

That's easy to say in hindsight. We've all been burned dozens of times by the 'obvious' choice. There is no objectively correct way of playing FPL, and this season is a great example of not taking any player's potential for granted.

You better get your crash helmet on; I got slated for basically saying the same (in much nicer terms) on the last page.

Basically people captained Sterling for 3 reasons imo...
      1) His price compared to Gundo blinded people.
      2) In previous seasons Sterling has been a goal scoring machine
      3) Sterling captain was a bit of ‘a thing’ on here last week.

People cap potential and its half time.

I agree backing form is crucial. But Sterling is in some form and could have scored late on and assisted Gundogan with another one.

People will TC Kane in gw26 on fixtures and pedigree.

    7. Vlekz
        3 years, 1 month ago

That is lame on so many levels.
        1) not everyone has the same rank, some are chasing and some are defending. Everyone has to play differently.
2)pope(high floor, no rotation)/sterling(finally in form, a track record of being explosive)/probably Fernandes (west Brom) are very good options too. Just was gundos day(nobody can predict 19 points for anyone on any day)
        3) play your own game instead of making crap remarks targetting a certain group of people when they are already low. If you captained him and gained rank, good for you. Don't gloat in such a pathetic way.
        4) I captained gundo, so I am not replying because I am salty or something

          +1
Point #1 Sounds like gambling to make back a loss. In this game you can wait for your opponent to make a mistake rather than force one on yourself

          1. Vlekz
              3 years, 1 month ago

Not really. Sterling wasn't a major gamble. And captaincy choices look right or wrong in hindsight depending on the end outcome.
If last night's game was played 1000 times, gundo wouldn't have outscored sterling in every single one of them.
If the opposite happened many would gain rank, instead of being stuck at the ranks they are right now. That's how chasing works(it's very rare for most to not have the obvious captaincy choice every week and "make a mistake")

I agree with your points, but still maintain that Gundo was the obvious choice based on City form. Sure, Sterling is a great player, but not firing to form, underperforming at this point. Will he perform to form again, absolutely! We just don't know when. That makes him a gamble. Gundo performing now is the obvious choice. Just my simple opinion.

I feel you're mixing up obvious with safe.

Multiple players were acceptable captains, so could be regarded as "obvious" to choose as an option.

Gundo was the definition of a 'safe' captain and was the obvious choice if you simply wanted to maintain rank.

For someone chasing, it wasn't out of the question to choose one of the other "obvious" captains like Sterling.

          1. thegaffer82
            • 12 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

It’s a fair point about chasing.
But Gundy’s form was (is) just so brilliant, I’m not sure backing against him is such a good strategy to gain rank.

            1. fusen
              • 12 Years
              3 years, 1 month ago

His form is brilliant but as someone above mentioned, 19 points isn't a normal score even for Gundo. Sterling could have scored more and with 1 game left and a possibly Gundo injury, sterling could still match or beat him.

With your thoughts on not gaining rank by ignoring Gundo, basically everyone owns him and most will captain him, so it leaves very little elsewhere to try and really gain ranks. You end up most of your other players to have a very good week, or you can try and hope Gundo scores say 5 points and your alt captain hauls which instantly boosts your rank.

                I get what you’re saying.

But my side is 71% template apparently and yet I’ve climbed into top 100k from 3million in GW10.

Just playing it safe with captain and not really paying any attention to ownership at all really and it’s possible to climb rank significantly.

          Pep on Gundog

Guardiola said that the player will be checked over, but dismissed the idea of resting him at Everton in midweek if he is fit enough.

"We will see tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. He told me it was tight and he is intelligent to see it but we are going to see," said the manager.

"If he is fit, he's going to play. I said many times he could play as a false nine and people laughed at me and I understood that but he has a sense to arrive at goal. It was a clear penalty and after he had two goals, he had the right tempo to arrive there.

Has anyone else been benching based on form and fixtures and not price recently?

I benched Son and he got 2 points, benched Salah who scored 7 against City but I played DCL instead of him so got 12 and then benched Son and Grealish this week and both got 2 points each.

I feel a bit hard done by with Salah's 7 points as he was pretty anonymous in that city game and he essentially dived for the penalty.

I feel this season in particular is one where value really doesn't mean much when there is pretty solid form in a lot of players/teams that make things fairly predictable.

Obviously saying that, players like Salah and Son can definitely do something exceptional or just get jammy points, so it's always a gamble.

Equally, Salah looked very threatening in the Leicester game and could’ve had more in the first 20 mins

unless they are fixture proof or you have dross replacement then it's always like that, surely?
i benched Kane and Son this week btw

Yeah, I think what I'm trying to say is that there are very few fixture proof players this season compared to normal and maybe not everyone is appreciating that

I've seen lots of people say that you can never bench Son.

RP - Just need confirmation with my thinking. I currently have 3xWHU, 2xLeeds and 1xARS with potentially only 1 game in 26. I will have 3FTs from now to 26.

Villa mid and attack was dire. Hardly relieved any pressure on defence - giving the ball away endlessly. He didn't have much service. JackG had one of this worse games

Defence and Martinez were great. A lesser performance and they could have lost 3-0

Gundo - 6 double figure hauls in 12gws
            FPL top scorer in 2021
            11 goals in 12 games
We even thought he may still be on pens...

But it’s only hindsight to say he would do well this week? C’mon, get real!

Isn't captaining Gundogan precisely a proof that, before deadline, one had thought he was the best player in their team this week?

          Best option?

          A. Take an 8 point hit to get set for dgw26
          B. WC get set for dgw26/27/28?

          Will be FH in 29

If your FH 29 what are you saving your WC for? Best thing is to attack the doubles instead of saving it for a ‘rainy day’ which will most likely never come

Hope Bednarek scores a goal, for his side this time.

Ralph wants a differential for the DGW.

Didn't Ralph said in the presser after the FA Cup tie against Wolves that McCarthy did nothing wrong to be dropped out of the first XI and that he'll start?

Yeah but Froster has been better imo. Agreed McC doesn't deserve to be dropped but if his poor form continues then...this is like the DDG situation

I am not disputing that at all. Just wrote what Ralph said. I'd start Forster too, but I guess with the way they want to play from the back, Forster isn't a good option for Ralph.

Yeah I thought about why he's not starting.. They're aiming to win FA cup and Froster being the better one plays in that competition.

What's happening with Aguero - any further news? I reckon in my humble opinion that City will win the league with both KDB & Kun on grass.

One thing I struggle to understand. I have scored 58pts so far this gameweek, which is bang on the top 10K average, yet I have somehow ended with a green arrow of 70K places?

Granted, my rank is kak (500K mark) but still. Don't have any Burnley defence and didn't captain Gundo. Weird

I'll pretend I know about statistics.

Firstly there's a hell alot of saturation where 10,000s teams are on same points, or give or take just one. Obvious some rank tiers more saturated than others. So every point is precious. Recently I played Martinez (4) over De Gea (6), those 2 points seem small but make ALOT of difference.

Then it comes down to player combinations. Believe it or not although we all seem to have what looks like just 30 players in the pool to pick from how that combination is in the first XI (cos bench points are useless) makes a big difference in any given GW.

Thanks mate, makes sense. I think having Martinez's 12 pointer helped cover the lack of Burnely defence. Kicking myself for not bringing Lowton in, but couldn't have predicted that he would score!
