Tuchel explains decision to bench Mendy as Chelsea rotation continues

Chelsea face Newcastle United in the second of two Premier League matches to take place on Monday evening.

Kick-off in west London is at 20:00 GMT.

Having rotated frequently since his appointment, Thomas Tuchel has sprung another surprise with his teamsheet tonight.

Edouard Mendy (£5.1m) is the latest high-profile name to face bench duty, with Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m) given another chance to impress his new manager.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Tuchel explained his decision:

Four of the five most-owned Chelsea players in Fantasy Premier League are among the substitutes this evening, with Timo Werner (£9.2m) the only one to start.

In related news, none of the back five – including goalkeeper Mendy – that Frank Lampard favoured for much of 2020/21 makes Tuchel’s starting XI this evening.

Thiago Silva (£5.6m) is still missing because of injury, with Ben Chilwell (£5.9m), Reece James (£5.0m) and Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) among the replacements.

Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) starts ahead of Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) up front, meanwhile.

Steve Bruce makes four changes to the Newcastle side that beat Southampton in Gameweek 23.

All four are enforced, with Javier Manquillo (£4.2m), Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Fabian Schar (£4.9m) injured and Jeff Hendrick (£4.5m) suspended.

In come Ciaran Clark (£4.5m), Jamaal Lascelles (£4.2m), Dwight Gayle (£5.9m) and Emil Krafth (£4.2m)into Bruce’s starting XI.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Alonso, Abraham, Werner.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Krafth, Lascelles, Clark, Lewis, Hayden, Shelvey, Willock, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Gayle.

might go Kane, Bamford, DCL and sack off Ingsy, then Bam -> Watkins...

Ings could have a lot of doubles but also not have the legs to play in them all.

I've been taking an active interest in people's patterns and second season high seems to be quite a thing.

He's smashed it off the bat from gw2!

I can't tell if he's lucky or not, he's making very good decisions each week. I think he's a natural.

Yes indeed I have. I'm not good enough for a top 1k finish unfortunately due to how slow I always start and I'll look to fix that next season.

How's this looking for a WC team?

    Martinez, Guaita
    Lowton, Target, Dier, Stones, Cancelo
    Bruno, Son, Grealish, Gundo, Raphinha
    Bamford, Ings, Kane

    ITB: 1.5m
GW 26 Transfer out Raphinha for DGW-ers and then BB.

Should I get Dallas and target this DGW too?

Those of you with both WC and BB to use - are you using WC before GW26 and then BB in GW26?

    If not, what's your plan?

I have both and seems so silly not to BB in 26, but I'm tempted to hold my WC and just play 11.

If using WC to mainly set up BB i think this can be a blind alleyway that people are intent on doing for a DGW.

Those chips don't have to be played out in combo just to maximise a double. Can mess up the following 5 weeks or so.

Is this a regular strategy or more prominent this season?

      BB in dgw26
No WC as been working towards a team with mostly dgw players
Will cost me a -8 tho
Think Dallas or bam will be the only exception

I'm thinking of taking a couple of hits to get 14 players in for GW 26 and BB this saving my wild card. I think?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I was trying to do this but it would cost me a -4 then -8 just to field all 15, some without even great fixtures. So went off that.

        I'm either on
        A) WC this week, BB 26
        B) Nothing at all, play 11 in 26 (could maybe us TC)

        1. estheblessed
          • 9 Years

I think I'll end up with 14 and Bamford. That's with a minus 4 hit. I think it makes sense in my case otherwise I would probably WC and BB.

I would certainly be the same in your case. There's just no way I can BB without WC before.

I want to save, but also what's the point in saving if BB 26 is so clearly the way to go...

Team isn’t bad enough to wc so holding

Bench pretty strong though, may even play 25 as fixtures for my bench are better then 26, could easily BB in any of 27-28 too

    8. mrelpea
      • 7 Years

I’m saving WC for gw30, will probably TC in GW26 and will save BB for shortly after WC. Will spend GW27-29 FT’s to get players in for the blank, should have 7-8. As world carding in GW39 dont mind taking a hit for GW29 eg if Auba is firing

    9. Casual Player
      • 3 Years

Might BB GW25 instead of DGW26. Depends on what's happening with DGWs - mainly if Soton gets it or not - as well as Gundo injury news. Unlikely to WC at this stage, but again depends on what's happening with fixtures, injuries etc.

Your team setup is likely different anyway - you can't just go with the crowd on this one IMO

    Had planned to do:
DCL & Soucek -> Ings & Raphinha (-4) this week, but got zero bank for any price rises. Both Ings & Raphina are on 97% on FPL statistics but I’d really rather not have to do anything tonight. (I can afford a DCL drop)

    A) Wait, risk being priced out of getting Ings.

    B) Make the moves now to be safe

    Plan to TC26, WC30/31, FH33

    2FT 5.7itb
    Pope
    Cancelo Stones Digne
    Salah Bruno Gundo Raphinha
    Bamford Antonio DCL

          Only on Leeds attack.

There's maybe a case for Dallas in the home game.

Your call, he could pop up and assist at Wolves on Friday but i think that will be tight for Leeds for a change!

WC, the - 12 totally negates the BB advantage

For me -8 is the maximum spend on a BB in isolation. Although if you're bringing in players like Targett & Ings who will have other doubles soon, you might be able to sweet-talk yourself into playing a -12 ( because it does seem a waste to WC and only make four changes).

Maybe could save WC and just go without BB in 26?

Robo to Dallas this week, followed by Antonio Stephens to Kane Barnes -4 before 26 ?

    Martinez/Martin
    Robo/Cancelo/Stones/Tarko/Coufal
    Salah/Bruno/Grealish/Gundo/Stephens
    DCL/Antonio/Bamford

I am thinking of saving my WC also in 26. Reason being my squad is really strong and will have most of the key players. So why waste it?

I can't remember why I chose him now, got him around GW17 when he started playing. Think it was because I was 0.1 or 0.2 of Coufal and got lucky!

What do you reckon is the chance for AVL and EVE to have a dgw in either 27 or 28?

1-25% unlikely according to Ben Crellin

It did sound like if Villa vs Everton didn't go into 26, it was fairly likely to wind up in 27 or 28. Not sure why Villa vs Everton would go into 26 when those two can take care of two of the postponements then (i.e. SHU-Villa and WBA-Eve), though.

What does it boil down to for Southampton to have a double in 26? A CL fixture outcome this week for their opponents or just based on their fixture congestion?

Thought I was definitely out of the cup after my 4th -8 in a row but the deciding factor was Mee getting injured for him and Antonio not playing for us both. I had Jorginho coming off the bench and him Bamford. I scape by with 1 point more.

I was planning on ditching Dier or even Cresswell for Dallas, but now we all got cold feet. However I took a look and discovered Brighton's great run of clean sheets and decent upcoming fixtures. Good defensive fixtures are hard to come by on paper in the coming weeks. Why aren't Brighton defenders mentioned more often?

Of course but it depends on your team. Brighton could be a good cheap option for BB if you don't want to carry an expensive bench but lose the upside of a DGW player
