Guardiola hints at Double Gameweek 26 and 27 for City and offers Gundogan update

Double Gameweek 24 came to a conclusion on Wednesday evening as Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to ten points with a win over Everton.

Elsewhere on a generally underwhelming night for those with Fantasy interest, Burnley and Fulham played out a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

SEEING DOUBLE

How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Double Gameweek 24

A throwaway line from Pep Guardiola in his pre-match interview on Wednesday evening set tongues wagging in the Fantasy Premier League world.

The City manager lamented a busy month ahead for his side before the clash with Everton, in doing so mentioning that games against Wolves and Southampton – City’s two outstanding fixtures following cup-related postponements – had been added to the calendar in March.

Those two matches could realistically only be added to Gameweeks 26 and 27 if we’re looking at City’s schedule before the March international break:

ARE YOU ILKAY?

Missing his first Premier League game since Gameweek 12, Ilkay Gundogan (£6.1m) sat out City’s win at Goodison Park.

Guardiola had forewarned us that the German would miss out on the trip to Merseyside and he had more to say on the in-form midfielder ahead of kick-off, suggesting that a return to action in Double Gameweek 25 wasn’t yet assured:

Elsewhere on the fitness front, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) marked his return from injury as a late substitute.

We await news on Joao Cancelo‘s (£6.1m) condition, with the Portuguese defender taking a heavy kick to his knee in second-half injury time and limping through to the game’s conclusion.

As for Everton, the Toffees could have Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m) back for the Merseyside derby this weekend:

SILVA LINING

Guardiola hints at Double Gameweek 26 and 27 for City and offers Gundogan update 1

De Bruyne’s return gives Guardiola another option in the centre of midfield, where Gundogan and Bernardo Silva (£7.4m) have started every Premier League match that they have been available for from Gameweek 14 onwards.

It was Phil Foden (£6.1m) who ostensibly filled in for Gundogan as the left-sided ‘number eight’ on Merseyside, with the youngster opening the scoring with a deflected 31st-minute effort and generally posing more of a threat than the shot-less Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) further up the flank.

Bernardo meanwhile made it six attacking returns in his last seven starts, first claiming the assist for Riyad Mahrez’s (£8.1m) superb strike and then taking advantage of some suspect goalkeeping from Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) to round off the scoring himself.

Bernardo has started 12 league matches in a row now and his and Gundogan’s run in the team pre-dated De Bruyne’s injury by some time.

It’ll be interesting to see how Guardiola incorporates the Belgian back into his side, then. Given the form of Bernardo and Gundogan in their respective central midfield positions and Gabriel Jesus‘ (£9.2m) lack of it up front, it’ll be the Brazilian who will be watching more nervously over his shoulder – both Bernardo and De Bruyne have operated as the spearhead of the City attack over the last few months.

Rotation will beckon for most City players during the upcoming period of fixture congestion, it has to be said, with Guardiola telling reporters:

If you see the schedule that we have… we have a game every three or four days, everybody is going to play. Against Arsenal, we are going to play new ones.

ALL ABOUT MEE

It’s now just one clean sheet in seven matches for Burnley without their skipper Ben Mee (£5.1m), who missed Wednesday’s draw with Fulham due to the concussion protocol.

The Clarets’ shut-out record stands at seven in 17 when Mee is fit and the good news for Sean Dyche’s side is that the first-choice stopper will be available for selection for the weekend’s clash with West Bromwich Albion, a fixture that offers Burnley a very good opportunity to add to their clean sheet tally.

Not that stand-in centre-back Kevin Long (£4.3m) was culpable for this clean sheet loss, with first-half substitute Robbie Brady (£5.0m) – on as a replacement for the crocked Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.4m) before having to leave the field himself – making a hash of a goalline clearance for Fulham’s opener.

On a disappointing evening for owners of Nick Pope (£5.6m) et al, the four Fantasy assets who emerged from the draw at Turf Moor with any sort of FPL return were all owned by 1.5% of Fantasy managers or fewer.

Ola Aina (£4.5m), the fortuitous scorer of the Cottagers’ goal and assister of one of Josh Maja‘s (£5.5m) strikes in the win over Everton, finished as Gameweek 24’s joint-top scorer on 20 points alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) – two players owned by a combined 10 managers inside the top 10k.

Fulham were worthy of their point and their undefeated run against sides outside of the top four now stretches to ten games.

Was originally going to try to BB25 and WC26, but looks like Cancelo has a knock or could be rotated this weekend.

BB25 still looks good here? No Raphinha, Cancelo and Coufal the main concern here

    Martinez - Pope
    Alioski - Dias - Cancelo - Coufal - Lowton
    Gundo - Salah - Bruno - Rashford - Barnes
    Ings - Antonio - Bamford

Have you seen anything further on Cancelo? Looked to me as though he got studs scrape the top of his knee, would have been painful but shouldn't linger.

Not sure it's worth it regardless of Cancelo but then I'm struggling myself with when to use it and have been considering a less than ideal bench this week.

he played past 4 games in 2 weeks, got a rest in the FA cup, got a slight knock, have a game in 4 days, and then Champs League 3 days later.

Not sure what to do here so any ideas would be helpful.

    Mesiler (Martinez)
    Stones Cancelo Maguire (Silva, 4.0)
    Salah Bruno Son Maddison Gundogan*
    Bamford Cavani* (Antonio*)

So I have 1 FT/0 ITB and Cavani, Gundogan and Antonio are looking like potential problems. Thinking of Antonio to Watkins and considering getting Raphina for a hit. What do you think?

Not worth a WC. But it is somewhat risky goign without a player who will most likely be most captained and highly TCed as well. If you C/TC Son, I suppose that would soften the blow if Kane hauls as Son should be involved in the goals as well.

Any idea who the three safest City assets are?

    A) KDB - Don't trust him straight back from an injury at all. Been there too many times for him to go right back to the medics.
    B) Gundogan - If he's passed fit we would assume he's nailed but with KDB back he could miss games and/or be back in a deep role.
    C) Cancelo - Probably best defender to own and most nailed of the fullback options.
    D) Dias - Probably most nailed defender (Ederson not an option with Pope and Martinez about).
    E) Sterling - Probably the most nailed of the front three.
    F) Foden - Been playing quite a bit recently but will always get a bench here and there, more so with Jesus and KDB fit.
    G) Stones/Laporte - Expect them to share time now.

The thing with Cancelo is he's basically first choice for right and left back. You may be right with the centre backs but we'll have to wait and see. Laporte was second best defender in the league not so long ago.

They can’t risk him is the issue, he’s too fragile. He will come in to give the starting two a rest like tonight or play in a three. Zinchenko and Walker will rotate Cancelo out more I suspect.

There is genuinely a zero percent chance he ever takes a penalty outside of a shootout. The real problem though is that Martinez and Pope are by far the best defensive assets from their teams.

Pretty certain I've watched every City game this season. You're calling him useless after 2 games and completely ignoring 3 entire seasons of historical data, you do realize that right? You care about recent form? 6 returns in his last 7 games.

He played very wide left both games and fluttered inside every now and then. Jesus getting injured or Aguero playing helps Sterling.

Sane used to look like a sub warming up on the side he played so wide, so it's not necessarily a write off, but yes Sterling has generally been a penalty box poacher so that's where we want him.

I've watched the 2 games and he's been far from useless. Don't get me wrong, he killed me this GW. But he should've had a goal vs Spurs and looked decent otherwise in both games. The only reason I've sold him on WC is to get Kane.
Now to support your point, even though he has played well this season, he doesn't justify the price tag. At 11.5m, you expect him to have a haul every now and then along with steady returns. His steady returns have been fine. But his hauls have been almost non-existent. Only twice has he got more than 1 return in a game so far. One of the reasons why I feel Gundo/Foden are better choices right now.

    4. WE GO FOR IT
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Cancelo for sure. Most of us will have a decent bench now. So we can take the odd benching.
Dias if you fancy City to not score more than 2 goals a game a lot. Of course while keeping CSs
Gundo is surely the best mid to own in terms of form and value. Maybe more rotated now ith CL but then everyone can be and he's the best bet long with KdB and Sterling to start most games. The myth of him not being attackign with KdB is absolutely wrong. He had 5 goals in 7 games from GW13 to GW19 (when KdB got injured)
If you want an explosive (differential) asset, Sterling/KdB. Foden, if you are low on cash.

Any combination is good. All depends on where you and who allows you to get a better rest of the squad.

The doubles add an extra layer of annoyance in these decisions. Normally with a strong bench we like assets like Foden who usually start or get 0 minutes. In the doubles you want them to start or at least come on for appearance points.

True. I would be happy with one game. The way City ar eplaying right now, one game from their assets is much better than 2 of most. If they do have 2 doubles in GW26 and GW27, I'd say just pick 3 which you believe will do well and stick. Everyone will be rotated with so many games. So, just pick any and hope they return in the games they do start.

            This is the reasonable view.

But people see points... and get vexed and frustrated if their players are benched.

With Man City it's inevitable for most with their squad and largesse competing in all competitions, every 4 days including travel.

Yeah, and that's why I never beat myself up about City rotations. Yuo know that you're player is going to be benched for the odd game and maybe come on for a one pointer. Just have to take it on the chin as they are then probably likely to start and do well next game.

Cancelo - hang on. With KDB's return, there's been plenty of discussion about his impact on Gundogan, but not Cancelo. Won't it send him out of midfield and back to fullback, where he'll be rotated more heavily especially with CL off and running again? I'd say with all that 4 competitions and DGWs, all City assets other than Ederson will be heavily rotated.

They will. Cancelo was quite attacking even with KdB. It's just fun owning him. Might go Dias if I want a more nailed option. Let's see. If I am going 2 City defender, I'll get Cancelo for sure. If one, I might prefer Dias for his nailedness.

Sterling to Raphinha and Antonio to Ings. Actually you could shift your 4.3 to Ings and keep Antonio.

Yeah except Rashford likely has a double in 26?

Trying to squeeze Raphina in and probably Ings for Antonio this week for a hit (if I don't WC). Have 2m ITB.

Ings and Raph for a hit good moves this week then I reckon.

            • 14 Years

Probably between Gundogan or Rashford/Salah. Was hoping to nab Kane in 26 so would need to downgrade either Bruno/Salah/Rashford. Obviously, Rashford is the weak link there but it's tough ditching players that have a potential double!

            1. Boberella
              • 7 Years

I know what you mean, but I do think rashford is the obvious one. The cash saved would give you great options for 26. Would you be able to afford Antonio to Kane if you do that?

yeah Rashford > Raph gives me around 6m ITB.

Could go Antonio to Ings and then Ings to Kane for 26. Is that what you mean?

Dallas, Raphinha and Bamford in for Creswell, Son and Antonio -8? I've no Wildcard or Free Hit so it would set me up for 29 and let me get Kane in 26.

    Martinez
    Dias, Cancelo, Mee
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Gundogan, Soucek
    Kane, Bamford

    Bench: Cresswell

1.7 itb and 2FTs. Considering Button to Steers this week to save 0.1. Then Mee and Davis to BHA defender and Watkins next week with 2FTs. Dont want to drop WHM assets as of now.

Righto, this is my WC locked in thus far:

    Martinez
    Cancelo Shaw Vestergaard
    Son Bruno Grealish Gundo Raphinha
    Ings Vardy

    Sanchez Maja Struijk Tete

Please rip it to shreds and bag me for not having Salah in it.

6.5 ITB exact funds for Raph to KDB in 26. (Although may go Ings/Vardy to Kane instead depending on what happens in 25)
Might also swap Sanchez out for Areola before deadline as FUL could Double in 26 and I might BB.
