Burnley ride luck to latest clean sheet as Fulham’s defence impress again

Burnley 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Bonus: James Tarkowski (£5.3m) x3, Nick Pope (£5.6m) x2, Matt Lowton (£4.5m) x1, Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) x1

Burnley and West Brom played out a goalless draw of some drama and considerably less quality.

Fantasy interest revolved around the Burnley defence.

Keeper Nick Pope (£5.6m) was far and away the most popular player on duty, with his 15.7% ownership handed an eight-pointer from the Clarets’ second clean sheet in three matches.

Some 6.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses earned shut-out points from Ben Mee (£5.1m), back after missing the midweek draw with Fulham following a suspected concussion last weekend.

It was a measure of just how poor the match was that much of the Fantasy talk involved whether Pope would be awarded a save, and therefore a save point, when he only partly blocked a goal-bound effort (he wasn’t), while the 3.7% of managers with Matt Lowton (£4.5m) in their teams were left to bemoan a late booking which clipped his bonus point potential.

But in truth, all those bosses were lucky to bank clean sheet returns at all, let alone moan about a missed point here or there.

Despite being reduced to ten men when VAR rightly persuaded Mike Dean to send off Semi Ajayi (£4.8m) for handball, the Baggies grew into the contest and missed excellent late chances to take all three points from the contest.

That confirmed a key issue point regarding West Brom. Even with Semi detached, manager Sam Allardyce bet the house on a win – surely the shape of things to come if he is to retain his relegation-dodging crown.

Matheus Pereira (£5.4m) was the stand-out attacking threat on the day, with his six attempts and three penalty area touches both match-leading figures.

He played (nominally) just behind lone striker Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m), although frequently ran past him on the break or during their occasional periods in possession – the Baggies had just 30% of that across the entire match.

But both were guilty of missing big chances.

That’s a luxury Allardyce’s men can simply not afford as they head into a decent mini-run involving Brighton and Everton at home during Double Gameweek 26, followed by a visit from Newcastle and a trip to Crystal Palace.

A first clean sheet under Allardyce was reward for the loyalty of the 2.2% of managers who have been living off save points from keeper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m), but his boss was left to rue a missed opportunity:

We are getting better and looking more dangerous and all we have to do at the top end of the pitch is be more clinical with our finishing. But if those performances carry on, then I’m convinced they will turn into wins rather than draws.

Then again, Burnley were unlucky that VAR didn’t intervene regarding a second hand ball incident, this time involving Kyle Bartley (£4.4m) in his own area.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche went for the ‘I’ve seen them given’ line on the incident, before delivering his verdict on a poor performance:

We gave the ball away so many times today. That is mental fatigue. Pitch was poor. The players were off, but we came away with a point and a clean sheet. We know these players can play better than that.

‘Mental fatigue’ is not the best preparation for Double Gameweek 26’s trip to Spurs and a home match with Leicester.

That’s a schedule inspiring indifference, with no Burnley players in the top 30 for transfers-in, and Mee currently the only Claret in the corresponding transfers-out table.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; C Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Cork, Brownhill; Rodriguez (Mumbongo 81), Vydra.

West Brom XI (4-2-3-1): Johnstone; C Townsend, Bartley, Ajayi, Furlong; Yokuslu, Gallagher; M Phillips (O’Shea 32), M Pereira, Maitland-Niles; Diagne.

Fulham 1-0 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Ademola Lookman (£5.0m)
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Lookman x3, Ola Aina (£4.5m) x2, Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) x1

Fulham’s quest to escape relegation – and find some Fantasy relevance – continued to gather momentum with a dour win over fellow strugglers Sheffield United.

The Cottagers are now unbeaten in four matches, and three of those have come with the added bonus of a clean sheet.

That has sparked some belated Fantasy interest in their back line, with keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.5m and 4.0%) the most popular starter across both teams.

But, arguably, it is two of Fulham’s back four who deserve the attention.

Both Ola Aina (£4.5m) and Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) brought in bonus against the Blades, with the former having produced scores of 11, nine and eight over his last three starts, and skipper Andersen’s 9,239 owners enjoying four straight returns, courtesy of those three clean sheets and an assist.

The centre-half was perhaps unlucky not to be handed the assist on Saturday as it was his pass to Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) that led to the winning goal, but the winger’s subsequent engagement with Ethan Ampadu (£4.3m) was deemed another passage of play.

That disappointment aside, both defenders are offering an attacking threat to go with their new-found defensive solidity, which bodes well for a Double Gameweek 26 involving a trip to Crystal Palace and a visit from Spurs – neither of whom are .

It’s persuaded a modest (circa 7,000) amount of managers to invest in Aina thus far, although Fulham’s schedule following that double (Liverpool away, Manchester City at home) is unlikely to lead to a rush on their key assets.

Lookman’s goal was his first attacking return in seven starts. He’s been a lively presence this season – his 52 attempts has been eclipsed by only five other midfielders, but his goal conversion rate of 7.7% is bettered by more than 80.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, continue to plough a consistently awful furrow, not helped by a terrible run of injuries, with Chris Basham (£4.6m) the latest victim.

One of the mainstays of last year’s superb defence, he started in midfield at Craven Cottage before manager Chris Wilder moved him into a back five after 30 minutes to help counter Fulham’s press.

That worked for a while, only for Basham to succumb to a hamstring issue after the break, leading Wilder to deliver this post-match verdict:

Basham has done his hamstring. He’s the fittest professional in club by a country mile. The record that we have had is ridiculous, only two or three players who have not had injuries this season, which is incredible. We’ll wait ’til we get home to Sheffield and see what the state is.

The state of the Blades’ league campaign is woeful indeed – they’re 14 points adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle.

And their lack of Fantasy appeal is perfectly summed up by their most popular player Rhian Brewster (£4.4m). His 6.4% ownership is entirely down to his cut-price as he’s played just four minutes of the last four Gameweeks.

A Double Gameweek 26 involving visits from Liverpool and Aston Villa isn’t likely to tempt Fantasy managers into buying him or his team-mates.

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Reed, Anguissa; Lookman (De Cordova-Reid 90′), Loftus-Cheek, Cavaleiro (Tete 78); Maja.

Sheffield Utd XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; K Bryan, Ampadu, Jagielka (Bogle 80); Basham (Norwood 51), Stevens, Fleck, Lundstram (McGoldrick 74), Baldock; McBurnie, Sharp.

Need to remove Grealish first and sterling to Kane would be -8

Fascinating note on FPL leaks this morning - it's got the attention of PL clubs:

'Clubs worried about players and staff leaks via fantasy football teams

Jack Grealish’s absence against Leicester City flagged up a growing problem for top-flight clubs in an unlikely location — Fantasy Premier League.
The Aston Villa midfielder pulled up with an injury in training towards the end of last week and it slowly became clear he would miss Sunday’s game. That much was obvious to his team-mates, too.
Matt Targett, Conor Hourihane and Neil Taylor all transferred him out of their Fantasy Premier League sides. So did Scott Adey-Linforth, Villa’s first-team performance analyst, and physio Rob Marshall.

Manager Dean Smith said after yesterday’s game: “I’ve been made aware that on social media there were some rumours that he wasn’t going to play. If it’s coming out of our training ground, then I find out where it is coming from and reprimand where it’s coming from.”
The issue is that this information is all public — if users of the game know where to look. Clubs are increasingly recognising that it is an issue.
There are no suggestions from teams in the Premier League that they will stop players from using the game but clubs are considering asking players and staff members not to pick their own players as it potentially gives away crucial information to opponents.

There have also been discussions over the matter between rival clubs at board level.

It is not just Villa where team selection clues popped up this weekend. Leeds captain Liam Cooper transferred Gjanni Alioski out of his side ahead of Friday’s game against Wolves. Alioski had started the previous 17 games in all competitions for Leeds, a run stretching back to November 7 last year, but he was absent from the start at Molineux.
Leeds’ player and staff league was discovered by users of website Reddit earlier in February, making this information easily accessible. Changes have also been made by staff members at Manchester United and Fulham and highlighted by “insider” social media accounts.'

Interesting. But how do you find out which transfers people have made before the gw starts? You can tell I'm an amateur!

So the issue isn't the FPL impact - there's no way of knowing this before the GW starts.

It's that in the gap between the deadline and the game, the opposition have an advantage. So Leicester learn Grealish is out earlier than they otherwise would, for example.

Don’t rule out FPL impact for other past or future incidents.....footballers have done crazier things in search of stimulation & controlling outcomes. See gambling, where they no longer care about the monetary prize, they only care for the rush.

The point is...........Villa players and training room staff transferring out Grealish in their FPL teams is a sign of a serious injury (rather than just missing one match)......

Have been saying for a number of seasons that PL players have a conflict of interest with FPL, no matter how minor (or large) it is, there is a conflict of interest. This is now extended to coaching staff.

Can see them being banned from playing in future seasons. And of course they’ll just go by pseudonym’s.

Otherwise one day a player (GK doesn’t try to save a penalty, for example) complete’s an action in favour of FPL rather than the benefit of the team. Might seem trivial and people will say ‘no chance’, but if they continue to play FPL, there will be an incident which calls in to question a player’s involvement in FPL. Just a matter of time.

And think we’re getting close to that said incident. I predict in the next two seasons.

I don't think it's like gambling on the result though. I don't see Bamford shooting from a tight angle rather than pass for a tap-in just 'cos he captained himself, for example.
The problem is info getting into the public domain, is all. If players are banned but play it using pseudonyms, that would be harmless so long as their identities are kept secret.

I do see a player shooting from a tight angle because he’s picked himself in FPL. Maybe not Bamford (or maybe him, don’t know) but someone.

Imagine Balotelli in his own FPL team. I rest my case.

Or doing any other action to influence FPL points. Really is just a matter of time. Footballers are just like others and could easily conduct an action for no other reason than something as random as FPL. Especially if they’re pizzed off with the club or manager etc

Yep this will surely lead to some sort of restriction - was saying same yesterday:

Regardless of other player's tweets or social media posts etc - Bamford openly talking about how FPL influenced his on-pitch decision making in the Leicester game - regardless of how tongue-in-cheek or whether it turned a goal into an assist or vice-versa - in a post-match interview was probably the high water mark - the Grealish thing will just add fuel to the fire now

Could you imagine if Bamford had said, even jokingly that "yeah i had to square it as i had us to win by 2 or more goals with Bet 365" - there would have been World War 3

That's my point - if a player joshes about a decision affected by betting that would be serious. But FPL is just banter - there's no money in it, just bragging rights in the locker room. Let them have their fun.

We don't know there's no money in it... they could have paid mini leagues!

The fact that it's not only an outside influence on on-pitch decision making, but also a potential source of information for rival clubs will go down like an absolute lead balloon I'd imagine

That Antonio price drop is really annoying.

    I should've done Antonio > Watkins early.

I think I'm leaning towards no Kane for my BB.
Ings, Antonio, Coufal > DCL, Watkins, Reguilon

With a bonus -4 of Grealish > Barnes if he's ruled out.

Yes. He's nailed on for minutes if nothing else and he has a double in 26, a potential double in 28 and a game in 29.

        This

Given Smith reaction to “leak” the answer has to be no surely. Also the “I’m an optimist” schtick is hardly promising.

Barnes a better choice in any event IMO

        Yes actually.

After doing some digging I suspect the injury is shin splints. That does not have a definite recovery time and is dependent on when/if the swelling and pain goes away.

It also could be a stress fracture if it's bad, but until he does a scan they can't know.

That would explain why Smith can't say what the injury is or how long it'll take to recover from.

If it's just shin splints and the pain/swelling goes away, he could conceivably be fit for Leeds. If he has a stress fracture then he's out for a while.

I'm in a similar transfer dilemma to you. I was intending Antonio to Watkins and BB. The price drop I can cover; my dilemma is whether Ollie will perform without Jack.
Plan B is a 4-point hit to lose Salah and Antonio for Kane and Barnes, and BB. But my faith in the Spuds is low.
Plan C is getting KDB and Barnes for Salah and Gundog, but that would leave me with Antonio and 3 SGW players.

It comes down to this for me. Escaping from triple Burnley was the plan. Pope and Tark out.

A Ederson and Aina/Konsa (extra player in 29 and guaranteed double DGW)
    B Areola and Cancelo

    Martinez Pope*
    Stones Shaw Tark* (Lowton Dallas)
    Mo Bruno Gundo Son Raph
    Vardy Watkins (Bamford)

Plan to BB playing keeper double Leeds and Lowton

    Pickford Degea

    Shaw Trent cancelo stones tarkowski

    Salah Bruno gunda jorginho lookman

    Vardy Richarlison bamford

14 dgw players on bench boost doesn’t look to bad

Better than not bad, looks great. A pity our own NFL isn't starting next weekend though. The DGW will soften the blow.

Got cold feet in believing the DGW 26 and didn’t do my wildcard. Now regretting it as I wouwant to bench boost but have a few players I wanted to bring in for it (mainly Kane & Ric Perrira).

How many hits do you think is justifiable to take to get the best bench boost team? -8? -12?

Anything higher than -8 defeats the purpose, even that is a stretch imo

It would be pointless ('scuse the pun). You'd spend 12 points to gain 12 points off your bench.

Well if you have 4 double game week players and they all blank, that is at-least 16 points.

Not sure rearranging and hitting for a bench boost when you'll have 11 doublers starting is a good plan. With European games, injuries, COVID, suspensions etc there will be plenty of players not getting 2 full games.

BB in 26 is looking so hard for me to do now with all the injury doubts in my team and the hit I would have to take to field a good BB team. Is anyone with BB and TC left considering TC over BB in 26 too?

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Have both, might TC. 11 DGWers do far, not bench boosting in 26, just looking to take a few hits for 27,28, 29 to get 11 for BGW and WC after that.

I don't know. Still getting BB therapy! I think it's a trap, rarely worked well for me. Probably a GW when it's tricky to bench cos fixtures look good for all the team. It'll be single games but from hopefully starters. Difficult to pick 15 players with 2 starts each and harder to pick them to get good points.

Current issues with my team, kind of in a shambles atm:

    - have two pricy keepers (Pope & Martinez) with no plan to play BB gw26 currently because bench is too weak. Also have Tarkowski and don't want Burnley defence going forward.

    - Son (need I say more)

    - Coufal & Antonio, I know they are doing alright today and have a match (albeit vs Arsenal) in gw29 but at least one would probably make way on a WC.

    - Cavani, no sign of him yesterday. Will he even start two DGW games and even if he does, do I even want him? Would definitely go on a WC.

    - Grealish (out for up to a month?)

    - Triple Leeds, I know this could be grand for gw29 but doesn't look good for the next 3 gws.

Based on this current information, would you WC? The only thing holding me back is no FH left for gw29.

I'm contemplating a wildcard myself (as opposed to taking a -8 to field 10 DGW players). As long as you can get to 7-8 BGW29 players it should be worth it.

what would be your plan to get 8 bgw players?

You'd need to have 5-6 on your wildcard, hypothetically:

          Martinez
          Watkins
          Kane
          Son
          Raphinha
          Burnley defender

I’m in the same boat ill have at least four single gw players in my squad so technically I don’t think it makes any difference playing the bb it in gw 26,27,28.

I’m going to be watch the Leeds game and if they look on form I’ll pull the trigger

    Pope, McCarthy
    Digne, Cancelo, Dias, Mee, Dallas
    Bruno, Rashford, Barnes, Gundo, Raphinha
    Kane, Richarlison, Watkins

No player is due. Even if he scores the likes of Gundogan, Fernandez, Salah look to have a higher ceiling cos Spurs don't score big. Bale climbing the form hill looks a bit interesting though.

Already done Cavani & Antonio to Kane & Maja for -4, to avoid being priced out, intention is to TC Kane this week, but could still WC as I have no Everton or Leicester coverage which worries me.

    Thoughts?

    Will Leave me with

    Martinez
    Cancelo - Dias - Lowton
    Gundo - Fernandes - Salah - Son - Raphinha
    Maja - Kane

    Pope - Bamford - Dallas - Holding
