Scoutcast Episode 368 – FPL managers set for biggest ever Double Gameweek

Joe is joined by David and Karam to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of Double Gameweek 26.

With 14 teams playing twice and six more having a single fixture, this looks to be the biggest Double Gameweek in FPL history.

There’s a lot for the Scoutcast crew to take in, with chips and captaincy among some of the issues to consider.

They also have to plan for future Double and Blank Gameweeks and still ensure they target the right players for the weekend.

Luckily, Karam is on hand to help frame the discussion as he unleashes his Wildcard.

Are Everton and Tottenham assets the best to target for the captaincy this time around, especially with such favourable fixtures? Or are more reliable premium assets such as Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) a shrewder pick?

And what of the cast of low-owned gems to consider, with Leicester’s Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) already being picked up by thousands of FPL managers ahead of the weekend.

Our trio take time to recap on their Gameweek 25 scores too, as well as frisk the fixtures over the next month and firm up their transfer and captaincy plans.

For Karam especially, he is hoping he can set up a team for a number of weeks, not just the impending set of fixtures. This is especially important as he prepares for his wedding next month – many congratulations from all at the Scoutcast ahead of his special day.

Team is set to go for the DGW, playing my TC chip this week, am I set or would you put the arm-band on someone else?

    Martinez
    Stones - Dias - Shaw
    Salah - Bruno - Gundo - Raphina
Kane (tc) - DCL - Bamford

Bench: Pope - Dier - Soucek - Coufal

Yep... Can't decide if I'm honest, the 'obvious' option this week in my opinion is Kane, great fixtures, his history against those teams is good, but then again.. Salah, Bruno, and even DCL are screaming at me.

  5. Ranking the DGW Captains

I think captaincy will be a huge factor this week. There will be plenty of TC chips in play with lots of good DGW options. I'm looking primarily at 3 things: fixtures, form and stats. Stats taken primarily from FPL website, trying not to share members area stats.

    Fixtures:
Looking at shots/chances conceded, xGc and teams faced over the last 6 weeks, with a small bit of subjectivity/eye test, I ranked each team in terms of defensive solidity into 4 tiers. (you might disagree with my rankings of course)

Tier 1 (best defensively) - Man City and Chelsea.
Tier 2 (generally pretty solid defensively) - Man Utd, Fulham, Brighton, West Ham, Wolves, Leicester, Burnley, Arsenal.
Tier 3 (suspect defensively) - Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, Leeds, Villa.
Tier 4 (worst defensively) - Southampton, Newcastle, Palace, West Brom and Sheffield Utd.

    DCL - T4, T4
    Salah - T4, T1
    Bruno - T1, T4
    Kane - T2, T2
    Gundogan - T2,T2.

    Notes on fixtures:
    - DCL's opponents Southampton are winless in 8 matches and have conceded 3 or more goals in 4 of their last 8 matches. They will likely also be without Romeu. WBA have slightly improved lately in some defensive metrics but have still conceded 12 more goals than any other team this season. Both teams could be awarded 'whipping boy' status.
    - Kane's fixtures are not as easy as they appear on paper. Fulham have only conceded more than 2 goals once in a game this season - GW9 vs Everton. And only Chelsea, City, Brighton and Wolves have conceded less than Fulham in the last 6 GWs. Burnley have only conceded more than one goal in a game on 5 occasions - vs City twice, vs Chelsea twice and vs Villa once (discounting the first few GWs when they were without Mee and Tark). They haven't conceded more than 2 goals in a game since the 5-0 drubbing by City in GW10. They have conceded a respectable total of 12 goals in their 16 matches since GW10.

Conclusion: DCL has the best fixtures vs two leaky teams. Kane's fixtures may be tougher than originally thought. Salah and Bruno both have 1 easy 1 tough match so although historically they can haul against anyone, it's almost a 'GW and a half' for them. City have two relatively tough fixtures but are the side most fixture proof in the league and can score well vs anyone. So I'm not sure how relevant fixtures are for Gundogan.

    Form.
xGI and minutes per xGI for last 6 matches ranks:
    1. Gundogan
    2. Bruno
    3. Salah
    4. DCL
    5. Kane

Form: average points per game last 6 matches vs average ppg whole season (in brackets)
    Gundogan - 10.0 (6.6)
    Bruno - 8.3 (7.6)
    Salah - 5.8 (6.8)
    DCL - 5.2 (5.9)
    Kane - 5.0 (7.0)

Double digit hauls vs total blanks (in brackets) over the season:
Bruno - 10 (9) - Including two double digit hauls in last 4 gws.
    Gundogan - 6 (10) - Only blanked 4 times in last 13 matches.
    Salah - 5 (10) - 8 of these blanks have come in Salah's last 11 matches.
Kane - 5 (8) - 3 of Kane's 5 hauls came in the first 5 GWs aided by 8 of his 11 assists coming within the first 6 GWs.
    DCL - 3 (6) Run of 4 blanks between GW15 and 21 but has 2G 2A in his last 3 appearances.

Haul potential: Times when their team has scored 3+ goals in a game and total goals scored by their team this season (in brackets)
    Bruno - 10 (53)
    Gundogan - 8 (50)
    Salah - 7 (45)
    Kane - 5 (37)
    DCL - 4 (37)

    Team form:
Man City are in fantastic form.
Man Utd are in decent form.
Everton had a good win last time out but are perhaps the toughest team to predict, their form can be very inconsistent.
Liverpool are in poor form, especially at home.
Spurs are in poor form, losing 5 of their last 6 games, albeit having some tough fixtures in that period.

    Summary of form:
Bruno and Gundogan are the most in form players. Bruno has had the most double digit hauls this season and his team have had scored the most goals. He has achieved double digits in 40% of GWs and he hasn't blanked in the last 4 GWs. He excels away from home and without Pogba in the team. Gundogan is averaging the most points per match in the last 6 and plays for the best team. Kane and Salah (and their teams) are relatively out of form. DCL is the least explosive but interestingly has the least amount of blanks over the season, indicating he is a low risk but low ceiling pick. Spurs and Everton tend to score less goals than City, Man Utd and Liverpool although DCL and Kane have high involvement in their teams goals.

    General notes and observations:
    - Bruno, Salah and Kane are on pens. There is an outside chance of Gundogan taking a pen but he's probably off them. DCL not on pens. Bruno and Gundogan are on set pieces.
    - Kane's points potential from assists has regressed to the norm after a period of big over-achievement early in the season. DCL and Kane both have 13 goals this season and an almost identical xGI. Kane gets chances and pen box touches at a faster rate. Gundogan is in the form of his life and while he has perhaps slightly overachieved lately, his stats are amongst the best in the division. Gundogan's early season form is essentially irrelevant since he is now playing in a much more attacking role.
    - I don't tend to put huge emphasis on home and away form, but it is worth noting here. Both Bruno's matches are away, which might actually be an advantage since him and United have excelled away from home this season. Gundogan has 2 home fixtures. City have a very good home record and have conceded just 7 goals at the Ethiad this season - but 5 of those were against Leicester in GW3!
    - As a TC'er of Kane (3pts) Sane (1pt) and Mane (1pt) in DGWs over the last 3 seasons, I am acutely aware of the devastating impact injury or illness can have on a TC chip in a DGW! Saying that, injury or illness is virtually impossible to predict. Here are some thoughts that are surely overthinking but may have some relevance. Kane historically has struggled with ankle injuries and has sometimes needed time to get back to full match sharpness. Bruno plays his tough match first so in the unlikely but possible event that he picks up a knock vs Chelsea, he may miss his plum fixture. Salah plays his easy fixture first which is a slight advantage.
    - Rotation is difficult to predict. In my own opinion, all five options are first choice and quite nailed. Gundogan, Kane and DCL have recently recovered from injuries so there is a small chance of recurrence, or of managers (i.e. Pep) managing their minutes. It goes without saying that keeping a close eye on European minutes is very important. Gundogan has played every PL game he has been available for since he adopted his new role so I think there is less of a chance of him being victim to Pep roulette than some might think. Pep's recent comments mention that if Gundogan is fit, he plays.

    Alternatives:
Sterling and Barnes are two players I haven't looked at (mainly because they aren't in my team) but are worth a mention in terms of captaincy this week. Barnes has the form and fixtures and should be nailed. Leicester are a team in form. Historically though he has been erratic and inconsistent. Sterling has improved recently stats wise and plays for the best team but there is more of a chance of rotation with him. Sterling is a high-risk high-reward player type player who could be a consideration for those who are chasing or feeling slightly punty, however there isn't much to suggest he should outscore the likes of Gundogan.

    Final thoughts
All 5 of the above are worthy of consideration and could score well this upcoming DGW. Salah is probably the least appealing based on form and fixtures. Kane's form and fixtures are mixed imo - could be better, could be worse. DCL has probably the lowest ceiling but certainly has the best fixtures and consistently brings in a steady stream of points. Gundogan and Bruno have the form and play for the most potent attacking teams. Historically this season they have more double digit hauls than the others.

I am undecided yet who I will captain and whether or not I will use TC. It's a close call but at the moment my preference, for what it's worth, is:
    1 = Bruno and Gundogan.
    3 = Kane and DCL.
    5. Salah.

I'm leaning similar. Bruno or Gundo for captain. If Gundo doesn't start tonight or gets reduced minutes he rockets up to the top of my captaincy thoughts maybe even ahead of Bruno.

I would guess so. Rodri took the last pen (I think?) but Pep didn't seem very happy about it. It's anyone's guess who takes the next pen for City imo.

last paragraph was plenty lol, Bruno for me, not over thinking this one off the back of a Dallas captsincy punt. DCL is a decent alternative (but slight concern with fitness).
City assets have high ceiling but major rotation risks. Spurs and Liverpool not for me on current form.

Kane has been directly involved in eight goals in his last four PL appearances against Burnley, with six strikes and two assists. He also has six goals in six v Fulham.

I don't like historical stats. They are not as predictive as current form, shots, xG etc.

Burnley and Fulham are in decent nick especially defensively going into these games while Spurs' attack has fallen off a cliff. Not saying Kane won't do well, I fully expect him to score in at least one of these games but I think there are better and bigger scores this week out there.

You could also argue that current form is not against next opponents. It's quite likely that someone else will outscore him, but finding that person in advance is the tricky bit.

I would also say that you shouldn't underestimate the psychological effect on a striker who knows he has a great record against a given team.

Excellent post, definitely given me a lot of food for thought. At the moment have the captaincy on DCL but my plan initially was Kane, but Spurs are in really poor form right now. That being said, he looked far more likely than Son to do anything against West Ham, and Bale looked much more like the player a lot expected to be coming to Spurs this season so he could have an impact at improving their fortunes and thus naturally make Kane a better prospect. Will be very interested to see if he plays tomorrow night, if not then he might get a start in this DGW. But Bruno is hard to ignore despite the tougher fixture with 2 away games. I'm also not really convinced by Chelsea's defence, I think they've been blessed a bit by the teams they've faced since Tuchel took over and will face a run of games now against teams that should be much more threatening going forward so I'm not looking at that game as I would if it were City or... well I'm struggling to think of other reliably sound defences this season in that vein but you get the point. I think Allan being back is what is drawing me to DCL currently but it will be a long few days deciding this.

Excellent write-up! Risk of getting absolutely stupefied in a severe case of analysis paralysis here. But still not sure on Gündo, if he should lose pens, I think it's still between Bruno or Kane (who I currently don't own) for me

      • Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Nice post Collie. I'm deciding between Kane and Gundo right now, though leaning towards Kane. I think Spurs have the quality to attack these games without too much risk, and they should take some confidence (and regret) from the way they ended their last game against West Ham. Obviously, Jose could just as easily park the bus like a loon, but he's pragmatic and needs to get the most out of Kane and Son (and Bale!), and these fixtures are a perfect opportunity to return to form.

This may sound like wishful thinking, but the norm is Kane and Son scoring goals and points, and the only reason we won't see that again is if Jose's lost the dressing room. With an unstable lineup, there are also (relatively) fresh legs fighting for places, which could help give them impetus.

On the other hand, Gundo is almost the obvious choice. If he were on pens, I'd likely TC him without thinking twice about it. Fernandes is a great option too, but I just can't bring myself to captain him against Chelsea given the other fixtures available. And I'd happily captain DCL if Gundo and Kane had worse fixtures.

Enjoyed the analysis but disagree with your assessment of Villa defensively.....12 clean sheets ( including 3 in the last 5 games) is more than any of the teams in your tier 2 and Chelsea in tier one. They could well be on the decline going forward but there's no denying their current stats are more akin to your tier 1 than tier 3.

This is an interesting case as to why stats can be so misleading based on what people value in them. Yes Villa have had a great amount of CS this season. They have also conceded 8 goals to City and Chelsea's 2 over the last 6 GWs and have conceded more shots in that time than any other team in the league. They are also expected to concede 3 goals in the amount of time it takes City or Chelsea to concede one. Personally I think Martinez has saved their bacon on more than one occasion. Not trying to disregard your opinion, because I can certainly see the point to put Villa higher on the list defensively. It's just interesting that stats should be viewed with a pinch of salt and that it's often possible to be selective in picking stats to suit a certain narrative - like I have just done!

With the recent rise in high scoring defenders, I'm going Digne as captain.

Great fixtures, DCl back and just got a hunch that he will do well.

I've got all the big guns, as most have, so thought a punt now might pay dividends...

Interesting. Digne is possibly the best defender to have for this week, but the Everton defense is very suspect don't bank on CS's despite favourable fixtures.

Really good piece - and it is more like an article due to its length. I wonder if the mods might be able to turn posts like these into community articles?

KDB hasn't been mentioned, but I think the matches tonight/tomorrow will be our best audition for captaincy

DCL/Salah are out of the convo.

DCL is a solid pick for those who put emphasis to target the fixtures. I can see the rationale in picking him and I imagine plenty of proponents of 'fixtures breed form' theory will do so.

I want my caps and triple caps to have a higher ceiling than DCL, who, like Bamford, is not exactly explosive, but good. Kane, Gundo and Bruno all have high ceilings AND floors...DCL is high floor, low ceiling for points.

I'm between Bruno and Kane. Both will surely start both games as their EL ties are effectively over so should be rested. Gundo starting vs Monchengladbach makes him a risk for getting benched in iether of the games as they play United the next weekend, where you'd expect him to start.
Don't have DCL. Salah not in thoughts. He is in decent form but Liverpool are in terrible form right now.

Sterling same risk as Gundo. Barnes is a good pick. I plan to get him in. Captaincy? Probably not.
I see there is no KdB mention He's on the bench in the CL. I expect him to start both games. If you have him or plan to get him, he is a decent shout.

I think in the end I'm going to TC Bruno. Gundogan playing 90mins in CL midweek put me off him as an option. Very tempted by Kane but going to stick to my original instincts and remember the stats that made me prefer Bruno in the first place. Good luck all!

      (Apologies repost from last article)

Is AWB to Pereira for a hit silly? I don't love MU's fixtures defensively especially since they've been leaky so I'll be likely losing him soon anyway and I like Leicester's fixtures really up until the last 3 of the season, I could see Leicester keeping 2 clean sheets this week and there's still the possibility of Ricardo playing more forward than usual again

WC team (No FH for GW29)

      Martinez, 3.9m
      Cancelo, Digne, Pereira, Dallas, Aina
      Sterling, Bruno, Barnes, Gundogan, Raph
      Kane, DCL, Bamford

      A) 3.9m keeper, Sterling
      or

B leaves me with 1.8m for upgrades elsewhere.

Which of the options below look best for this coming week.

      Bench Boost.
      Martinez.
      Shaw, Cancelo, Stones.
      Salah, Bruno, Son, Gundo, Raphinha.
      Ings, Watkins.
      Areola, Bamford, Dallas, Burn.
2.8m ITB. Just BB left from the chips.

      1. Ings + Bamford -> Vardy + DCL (-4).
      2. Ings -> Kane 0.1m ITB. (Need to act quick on this one).
      3. Just Bamford/ Ings-> DCL.

      Still torn between these options
      A) Son and Ings to Barnes and Kane (-4)
      B) Ings, Bamford, Cancelo to Kane, Maja, White (-8)
      C) save ft
      D) wc (basically to get Kane in)

      Martinez Areola
      Cancelo Stones Mee Dallas Coufal
      Salah Bruno Son Gundo Raphinha
      DCL Bamford Ings

Is KDB over Kane silly and trying to be too clever?

Feel over 4 games/ 2 doubles (assuming he plays a part in all 4), KDB could outscore Kane. Also, Spurs form is horrible and fixtures aren't actually what you'd consider easy.

I would rather be one week too late with KDB than 4/5 too early.

If you think Kane isn't worth it then go for it. I set up my team to get Kane in and captain him this week yet I'm stalling over it now with their poor form and the fixtures not being as easy as many think. Getting KDB in this week could be a great differential, just keep an eye on his minutes tonight first maybe and how City do in general. If he plays the full game or it ends up being a tight result he might be rested at the weekend or taken off early for the next CL game so maybe see how that goes and go from there

      1)play Dallas or Antonio
2)antonio-->Watkins for -4 and keep him till gw29.

        Maddison or Rodriguez?
Not sure the former has been declared fit
The latter plays 60-70 so less chance for a haul
