Scoutcast Episode 368 – FPL managers set for biggest ever Double Gameweek

Joe is joined by David and Karam to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of Double Gameweek 26.

With 14 teams playing twice and six more having a single fixture, this looks to be the biggest Double Gameweek in FPL history.

There’s a lot for the Scoutcast crew to take in, with chips and captaincy among some of the issues to consider.

They also have to plan for future Double and Blank Gameweeks and still ensure they target the right players for the weekend.

Luckily, Karam is on hand to help frame the discussion as he unleashes his Wildcard.

Are Everton and Tottenham assets the best to target for the captaincy this time around, especially with such favourable fixtures? Or are more reliable premium assets such as Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) a shrewder pick?

And what of the cast of low-owned gems to consider, with Leicester’s Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) already being picked up by thousands of FPL managers ahead of the weekend.

Our trio take time to recap on their Gameweek 25 scores too, as well as frisk the fixtures over the next month and firm up their transfer and captaincy plans.

For Karam especially, he is hoping he can set up a team for a number of weeks, not just the impending set of fixtures. This is especially important as he prepares for his wedding next month – many congratulations from all at the Scoutcast ahead of his special day.

I can get to this with a -4
(transfers Ings to Kane; Maddison to Lookman & Mee to Konsa)

    Any thoughts?

    Martinez
    Cancelo, Konsa, Lowton,
    Sterling, Bruno, Gundogan, Salah, Lookman
    Kane, Watkins

    Button, Bamford, Dallas, Coufal

What is the word on Maddison? If fit, I wouldn't want to lose him this week.

I've been really reluctant to lose Maddison, but given the injury it makes it more palatable.

Othewrwise my only route to Kane is via Sterling (to Barnes probably) and then double City defence

Rodgers presser this afternoon, in the same boat and really don't want to lose him so we'll see, if it's vague then we should still hear again from him before the weekend

    Martinez, 3.9m
    Cancelo, Digne, Pereira, Dallas, Aina
    Sterling, Bruno, Barnes, Gundogan, Raph
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

    A) 3.9m keeper, Sterling

What you guys think of this plan. WC activated for this GW...

    Martinez (johnstone)
    Cancelo, Dias, Shaw, (Konsa, Coufal)
    Salah, Barnes, Bruno, Gundo (Soucek)
    DCL, Kane, Watkins

    Will play BB GW27
    Johnstone (NEW)
    Konsa (Wolves)
    Soucek (Leeds)
    Coufal (Leeds)

And then build a team for BGW29 should be able to get 9/10 players

I need to transfer Coufal out for a player that plays on a team that plays twice this game week. I will have 5.3 million to spend.

DGW26 decisions to be made - need some advice from the hive mind 😀
I have TC and WC left - planning on TC this week (Kane or Bruno) and WC in 30/31. Will use FTs to get a good enough team for GW29

    A) Ings, Son > Kane, Barnes (-4) - ditch Son, gain Barnes
    B) Ings, Pope > Kane, fodder (-4) - Kane + Son double up

    1FT 1.3itb
    Martinez
    Dias, Stones, Shaw
    Salah, Bruno, Gundo, Son, Raphinha
    DCL, Ings
    (Pope) (Bamford, Dallas, Coufal)

I know it may seem mad to take out Son but he has looked waaayyy off form and I prefer Kane anyway - the opportunity to get a LEI mid in their form streak is too good too.

I am leaning heavily towards going for option A.

    Cheers!

Prefer B by a lot. Since you have no BB it's totally fine to ditch Pope. Son has a game in 29 and also likely has stored value.

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years

B only appeals if we think the fixtures will translate to form for Spurs - I'm just not convinced under Mou's style - I don't see hauls and Kane looks better of the two.

Understand re. ditching Pope, but I would be doing that to fund transfers between 27-29 to prepare for that anyway.

Just interested why you are backing the Spurs double up and avoiding Barnes?

Because the fixtures are insane. Burnley, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

I'd back any team in the division to do well in those games except maybe SheffUtd and West Brom. They also have been scoring more lately actually. They netted a bunch in the Europa League, they scored four against Everton. They scored against West Ham and had lots of chances.

They will come good I'm pretty sure. Barnes is streaky. And the fixtures aren't as nice for the double and he doesn't have a GW in 29.

Describing those fixtures as Insane is... well... insane 🙂 (imo of course)

Remember there are 2x Burnley teams this year:

            Burnley1 (Where Pope/Mee/Tark don't start together) - 8 games, 1 cleansheet, 18 goals conceded...
            Burnely2 (Where Pope/Mee/Tark DO start together) - 17 games, 8 cleansheets, 12 goals conceded...

Burnley1 is an insane fixture - but Spurs are playing Burnley2

Fulham are even more of a nightmare - 1 goal conceded in last 4 games & fighting for their life with the smell of newcastle's blood in their heads

Kane can easily score in both - but calling those fixtures insane is mad - especially given the circus at Spurs - Mourinho looking like he;s edging closer to his traditional meltdown of blaming players/board/referrees/transfer market - everything but himself will be to blame for Spurs form

You may be right. But Spurs are also a different team with Kane and without Kane. They've been without Kane for the recent slump and have had tough games. It'll be interesting to see which of the two prevails.

Also, I do like Spurs defense a lot for this run. Form is poor but those games are so good for defense that Reguilon is a likely player I'm gonna buy this week especially since most people are going to avoid.

There's no doubt Spurs will be favourites for both games - but they are far from insane fixtures - on paper at least

They are actually quite tough (on paper)

The bright green boxes on the FPL site are just blinding a lot of people to just how hard Spurs should have to work & much they should have to fight to earn the right to score against both Burnley & Fulham - it's far from easy

(again - easy on paper - who knows, maybe Burnley have an off day/Mee goes off injured/Tark gets sent off/Kane scores a 0.01 XG screamer or Free Kick from 35 yards, they get a dodgy penalty etc etc - nothing guaranteed)

        • 6 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

What if you flip it and see it as a free swap of Son > Kane and a hit for Ings > Barnes?

Kane is looking much better than Son and the double up is relying on fixtures translating into form which I just don't buy on watching them and knowing Mou's style.

I'm genuinely torn as form has been king over fixtures recently in FPL terms....!

You seem very convinced. Not sure why you asked then but I think B is clearly better. Getting rid of Pope helps you long term in a way that flipping between Son and Barnes doesn't. Form is fickle to chase. Fixtures are more reliable and extra game in 29 is important for your plan as well.

Haha I'm not as convinced as I sound!

Although I just watched Lateriser's latest pod with Tom Freeman as guest and they looked at defensive form and both BUR and FUL are near the top for defensive stats in recent weeks, while Spurs are near the bottom for creation of chances etc - this has made me far more nervous over doubling up.

            That's the main reason!

They are both captaining Kane so they expect some Spurs returns! Also, they have FH in 29 so that informs their decisions.

That's definitely a factor, yes, but the stats recently re. BUR and FUL defence and Spurs stats and eye test have shown these match ups aren't as plain sailing as most think

Anyone else here not like using historical stats?

Like X players has done well against Y team in the past so therefor he'll do well against them in the future?

I know sometimes there are anomalies to this that do tend to do specifically well against specific teams for whatever reasons but in general I think these stats are not as useful as current form.

To be any useful guide so many variables need to be the same now as when the teams met each other previously; same manager / playing style, formation and personnel for both teams. Don't give it much weight.

Me. I don't like historical stats.

      Andy's argument was good.

Lukaku had scored like 8 goals in 8 games vs West Ham (not sure on the actual figures). He blanked in the next game vs West Ham. And the next time a fixture vs West Ham came around, people were saying he'd scored 8 goals in 9 games vs West Ham...

Depends how recent it is, I do think it has value but if you're stretching back much further than 2 seasons ago and ignoring changes on both team's personnel and style, form, etc. then there's little point

    What's your opinion?

    Pope, McCarthy
    Mee, Rudiger, Cancelo, Stones, Dallas
Salah, Bruno, Grealish , Barnes, Raphinha
    Watkins, Bamford, Adams

    A) use TC on Bruno/Salah
Grealish to Barnes and save 1FT

    B) Use BB
Grealish, McCarthy, Adams --- Barnes, Areola, Maja/Maupay

Currently starting Raphinha, benching Bamford and Dallas, not fully decided tho, I think I’m benching Bamford because of I don’t like the look of my team in a 4-3-3!! With Raph it will be 4-4-2!! Psychological I think might need to revisit that one!! Haha

    A) Dallas, JWP > Reguilon, Gundo (-4)
    B) Dallas, JWP > Castagne, Gundo (-4)
    C) JWP > Gundo (FT)

Only TC and BB left, will probably BB this week:

    Martinez, Sanchez
Dias, Cancelo, Shaw, _____, El Moh
    Salah, Bruno, Barnes, ______, Raph
    Kane, Bamford, Watkins

Yeah, that’s the downside to selling Dallas, though if I do A I am replacing with another player who plays in 29. If I don’t play BB now, I’m not sure when I would tbh, 30 looks okay for fixtures but will likely have a bunch of sub-optimal players that were needed for GW29.

I’ll also likely need a cheap replacement for El Mo by then since cash is due back, I could go with a cheap Leeds option if I sell Dallas now. I have no value tied up in him.

I love backing Salah when everyone has gone against him. Did it in GW21 against West Ham and very likely going to do it again this week. Most of the prediction algorithms still have him top (or thereabouts) Bruno is a very close 2nd for me.

Sorry Rupert i meant to raise this to F_Ivanovic 😀 as he gave am example where it went well for him! I would of assumed that this year as so many players have been template that going against the grain would lead to a bad overal rank!

164k. I rarely go too big against the template but the captaincy on such a big player is one such instance when I think is the perfect time to go differential.

I have a pretty template team but on this occasion i think i will just be going with Kane, my overal rank is pretty good this year and dont fancy this week to rock the boat!

Lookman is a prob your best option at that price range given the double and plays in 29, but being a former Lookman owner, having him in the longterm can be painful- don't expect many returns

Hello, hello. Need some help with final WC draft. Currently at 65k OR. No chips left so don't need to worry about BB but do need to consider blank in GW29. Torn between a 3-5-2 with Harvey Barnes, and 4-3-3 with Ollie Watkins - the latter would give me one extra player for GW29.

    Martinez-
    Cancelo - Dias - Shaw
    Bruno - Salah - Son - Gundo - X
    DCL - Kane

    Subs: Fabri, White, X, X

Option A: Barnes, Maja, Struijk. 0 ITB
Option B: Watkins, Lookman, Aina. 0.2 ITB

    Thoughts would be kindly received.

So in B you're starting White/Aina every week?

I wonder if you can afford B, but with Dallas as your (most weeks including 29) defender, by downgrading Lookman to Willock or similar budget? (Willock also plays 29)

Oh it'd be a 3-4-3 with Watkins, right. In that case I think I still like what I suggested if it's affordable, would leave you with 7 for 29 already.

Sorry scrap that I meant a 3-4-3 for option B. Watkins would play over White/Aina/Lookman. Happy to bench Fulham options until 29.

Forgot Fulham play 29! In that case, I think it's a real toss-up. Watkins somewhat dependent on Grealish fitness but the fixture pile-up alone may come good for him - it's a great double fixture. Given the Barnes bandwagon this week though, he seems the natural one to get if you're WCing.

Thanks for the suggestions btw. Hadn't really considered Willock as an option and Dallas has certainly been a rank-killer for me having now owned all season! Could also go ESR who is £4.3m.

Option A for the flair imo- Leicester the form team and Barnes the form player with a decent set of doubles vs Watkins who is Grealish-less and in worse team form

      Nice WC team btw

Thanks. Yeah I'm currently set on A as worried about the impact of Grealish being out. May change if Dean Smith gives any proper assurances that he'll be back for Villa - but I'm not holding out much hope.

Cheers. Yeah I'm weighing up risk/reward of A over B. Villa do have really nice fixtures for the double it's just the impact of Grealish being out that is tilting me towards A at the moment.
