Salah blanks against bottom-half club again as Fulham’s defence continues to impress

Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool

  • Goals: Curtis Jones (£4.4m), Kean Bryan (£3.9m) own goal
  • Assists: Roberto Firmino (£9.2m)
  • Bonus: Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) x3 Adrian (£4.2m) x2 Andy Robertson (£7.2m) x1

Liverpool dodged a fifth straight league loss with a victory over Sheffield United that produced little more than scraps for the owners of the team’s front three.

It was a sign of how far the Reds’ star has fallen recently that nearly all of their players suffered sales going into Double Gameweek 26, even though it started with this match against the league’s bottom side.

Chief among them was Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), who was moved on by a net 144,540 FPL managers.

Three Become None

The Egyptian blanked for the second match running, although he did miss a big chance late on from an Andy Robertson (£7.2m) cross.

This was his sixth successive match without an attacking return against a side currently in the bottom half – although the fact that he has spurned seven big chances in those half-dozen games suggests it’s just a matter of time before the drought ends.

Sadio Mane (£11.8m), meanwhile, didn’t have a single attempt all night, and to add insult to apathy, his (dwindling) 5.2% ownership were also denied an assist for Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.2m) strike after 65 minutes when it was subsequently downgraded to a Kean Bryan (£3.9m) own-goal.

Even second-string keeper Adrian (£4.2m), in for Alisson (£5.9m) on compassionate grounds, experienced sales, with 32 especially disloyal managers missing out on a nine-pointer for their treachery.

One of the very few Liverpool players who did enjoy purchases for the double fixtures was bargain-basement midfielder Curtis Jones (£4.4m), and a prescient 3,257 managers reaped the rewards from his first goal of the season.

(Full) Back In The Points

These have been tough times for owners of Liverpool full-backs Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m).

The former had blanked for seven straight starts, while the latter’s 14-point haul at Spurs had been his only major return since the first match of Double Gameweek 19 against Manchester United.

But a first clean sheet since that United clash, plus bonus points for both of them, meant the defenders served their still significantly large ownerships well.

Alexander-Arnold bagged the maximum bonus available with a well-rounded performance which had him leading the way for chances created (four) and recoveries (14) and second for attempts (three).

The pair also provided a big chance each.

All of this good stuff needs to come with the rider that it was ‘only Sheffield United’, however.

A far bigger test will come on Thursday at home to Chelsea, and manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that fixture might involve the return of some key players:

Alisson and Fabinho, I’m pretty sure (will be available). Diogo (Jota) was with us in the hotel, but overnight he got sick. He was in the squad today. I would think he is ready for Thursday, but I don’t know. Fabinho trained twice with the team, should be at least close for the squad, I’m pretty sure.

As for the Blades, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) made some outstanding saves (and seven in all), while Ollie McBurnie‘s (£5.6m) miss from a free header at 0-0 looked all the more glaring as the game went on.

Manager Chris Wilder summed up the night neatly when he said:

We had a right go but lacked quality and strength in depth.

Unless something amazing happens, their relegation looks inevitable and their Fantasy appeal remains negligible.

Sheffield Utd XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Ampadu, Jagielka (Osborn 56), Bryan; Baldock, Norwood, Lundstram, Fleck (Sharp 80), Stevens; McBurnie, McGoldrick (Burke 56).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Kabak, Phillips, Robertson; Jones (Keita 80), Wijnaldum, Thiago (Milner 76); Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Fulham

.

Bonus: Vicente Guaita (£4.8m) x3, Gary Cahill (£4.5m) x2, Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) x2

Fulham made it four clean sheets from their last five games as they shut down a Crystal Palace side that even drying paint would have struggled to find entertaining.

Of the three shots Roy Hodgson’s team had, none were on target, but while the Cottagers were considerably more progressive, a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping ensured a stalemate.

Neither team has sparked a Fantasy frenzy this season.

The most popular player, Tyrick Mitchell (£3.9m and 14.7%), has a cut-price value to thank for his bulky ownership, although he was an unused substitute here.

As for Fulham, the entire squad’s ownership adds up to 21.6%, or exactly half a Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as it’s known in FPL circles.

Just under 100,000 managers did take a punt on left-back Ola Aina (£4.5m), however, which made him the only player from either side to figure in the top 30 transfers-in for Gameweek 26.

There was plenty of logic behind the move, with Aina having scored 28 points from his previous three starts.

But the reward for that logic was a return of one whole point as Fulham boss Scott Parker replaced their man with Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) at the interval.

Parker explained the move post-match:

I just thought we needed a little bit more down that right side and I thought it worked. It was nothing to do with Ola, but Antonee just gave us that little bit more going forward.

That should provide Aina’s new owners with a small crumb of comfort – the fact he might well return for the Gameweek’s second fixture, at home to Spurs, on Thursday.

Fulham had chances after the break, but Palace keeper Vicente Guaita (£4.8m) was in no mood to be beaten, making four saves and earning maximum bonus for his third 10-pointer of a season in which he’s kept just five clean sheets.

Hodgson blamed his side’s lack of threat firmly on… Fulham:

Our ambition was to attack and create lots of goals chances, but unfortunately, there were two teams on the field, weren’t there? I’ve got to say, they were very, very good at closing us down, restricting our time and space, making certain the attacking moves and options we were hoping to launch weren’t available.

That doesn’t bode well for the second game of their double – a visit from a Manchester United that’s shown a taste for good away performances this campaign.

As for Fulham, their defensive improvement has been there for all to see.

But an immediate schedule involving Liverpool and Manchester City doesn’t look like the right time for Fantasy managers to tap into it.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Van Aanholt, Cahill, Kouyaté, Ward; Eze (McCarthy 79), Riedewald, Milivojevic, Townsend; Ayew, Benteke.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Aina (Robinson 45), Andersen, Adarabioyo, Tete; Reed, Anguissa (Mitrovic 73); Lookman, Loftus-Cheek, De Cordova-Reid (Cavaleiro 66); Maja.

Last time Barkley was out, El Ghazi came in and couldn't stop scoring. He was dropped as soon as Barkley came back. I expect the same this time when Grealish is back.

don't know what to make of salah, hung out on the wing last night and was never really involved (other than going through once, and missing an open goal another time). his form is horrific.

You should draft a WC and see how many changes when compared to your current team. You can WC to cover 29 and FH33.

True. Could bring in WHU, Spurs, Rapinha, BRI defender. I've done draft and would swap over 10players atm. Keeping Martinez if fit and maybe Mount, Bamford.

            Maguire -> Shaw
            Cancelo -> Stones
            Pereira -> Rudiger
            Robertson -> Cresswell

            Salah - KdB
            Foden -> Soucek
            Gundo - ?

            Diagne -> Antonio
DCL - > Kane or even Aguero

Ederson could also be good way to get City defender.

Forgot to post the link. Of course it is team dependent. You can survive 29 with 7-8 players as long as you cover the high owned players.

      FH33 surely.
Only 4 fixtures in 29 and all difficult to call.
Fulham have improved defensively and Leeds are hit and miss
Brighton vs Naewcastle will be cagey. Both will want to win but not want to lose. Can be 0-0/1-1.
West Ham are a good 2 way side and Arsenal have improved. Will be a close game.
Villa vs Spurs istough to call. 2 equally matched teams could cancel each other out.

I guess if you have 7-8 template players, that should be enough to just save it.
Martinez, Dallas, Son, Grealish, Watkins, Bamford and Kane will be the highly owned players. If you can get most of these palyers, you should be good.

You can attack in GW33 with good fixtures for United, Leicester, Liverpool and Villa.

The ceiling is quite low in 29. There are no obvious wins for big teams to target. 33 looks good as you can take a punt on the likes of Rashforf, Cavani, Vardy, Mane, etc. who you probably won't get in your team right now.

For me personally it’s going to be 29, without hits could only get max 7 out. Much easier to shape the team for 30 onwards and lose 2 of my 3 city/2 spurs for week 33...

    Hi Guys

Thinking of transferring Bruno for KDB, I would need to lose one of my Man City defenders as I would have too many City players.

So my question is which of the two below would you remove?

    A. Stones
    B. Cancelo

Also a replacement for Barnes, was thinking of the below:

    A. Soucek
    B. Mount.
    C. Jota

    Thanks

SOU do have a double but one of them is vs. MCI (read: 2x blanks) & whilst the other is SHU, you can't really guarantee SOU keep a CS which is what you're betting on.

I don't think that's really the point. If VAR recommended a penalty be given (which Shaw may have misheard, but may be right) & the referee overruled it - that is not about getting the decision right/wrong - it's about not causing a stir.

Anyway this'll probably just go to die now, which I don't really care if it does. Just an interesting one. You'd think if they have the audio they & Shaw was telling porkies they could just share that.

The referee made an on pitch decision (correctly) - no penalty. VAR's job is to say "we think it could be, take a look" ; referee took a look - and there wasn't evidence to sway his decision. Again, correctly. That Ole hasn't been fined is an outrage, he's clearly trying to influence future decisions.

    Afternoon all,

I have the 2nd WC and FH chips left. Any suggestions on the optimum strategy to play them - i.e. best weeks?

    Current squad:

    Martinez; Sanchez
    Dias, Stones, Castagne, Rudiger, Coufal
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Gundo, Rafinha
    Kane, DCL, Watkins

Of those, both keepers and only 5 outfield players have fixtures in GW29.

For context, I'm top of both of my main mini-leagues. And around 100K overall atm. Played the TC on Kane this week and the BB back in GW19.

    Cheers!

Probably free hit in 29 and WC after, but you are in a fantastic decision with both chips to do pretty much whatever you'd like with no consequences.

I think you need to make a decision on whether you're playing FH29 or FH in a later DGW/BGW or not first.

It's quite hard to give advice without knowing that since the recommended players would be different in some cases.

Do you want to bring in players for 29, selling some of your current crop, or do you want to keep then?

        3 years, 28 days ago

Ummm... dunno. I have a combined 5 city and spurs players so FH in 33 (when both blank) could be useful. Problem with the WC is that I'm pretty happy with my squad and don't see the need to radically overhaul anything right now. But the later I leave it the less benefit I get right? Tricky. I've played this season with short-term planning horizons given all the uncertainty. Finding it hard to decide on a good strategy for the remaining 12 weeks.

Your team looks in decent shape for BGW29. You can get the Leeds boys in in the next 2/3 weeks and that should be enough to navigate 29 without FH. You can use it in GW33 when Spurs and City blank.

WC post GW29. In GW30/GW31 depending on fixtures, form and players you want to get in. If there's no need, just hold. If there are postponements post IB, you can use it then.
Or maybe play in the last 2/3 GWs. Defend your lead in MLs or take a punt if you're chasing Top10k.

Where better to spend the money? I already have 3 city players, Kane & Son, Bruno.... I could get rid but I'd have sh*t loads of cash left itb. And Salah, although badly out of form, can explode anytime. Guess many are in the same boat?

This is definitely worth considering. Esp if Jota is back fit. Then could reasonably go Salah -> Bale and Rafinha -> Jota for Liverpool coverage (assuming Jota picks up where he left off).

Only concern is Bale's fitness. How many games will he start and how long on the pitch will he manage when he does?

Trouble with that is Jota is going to be caught in rotation, more often with Firmino than Salah I suspect.

True but if his form is good when he plays then it's the same situation as with e.g. Gundo. Never 100% sure he starts but for that price and with those returns he's a good option. Liverpool attack has been really poor for weeks so he may well be the catalyst to spark things into life again.

Definite option and I hope ; but Liverpool's attack is being largely blunted by their defense and midfield injuries as much as anything. Gundo is pretty close to a guaranteed starter as you'll get a City I think.

In an ideal world would go to Salah to KDB but with double City defence and GW29 with no FH coming up, priories lie elsewhere, may go on WC31 to Jota TBH, we shall see

I don't see anyone justifying his price tag. It's just that most have triple City, Bruno and Kane/Son already. There are no obvious replacements. People are making moves for players playing in GW29. But apart from Son and Kane (Grealish is injured. So no point moving for him right now), all are cheap options.
Auba is worth a punt and maybe Bale. If you have a WC left, it's easier to take a punt on them and switch on WC if it doesn't work. If you don't have a WC, it's worth holding till GW29 at least.

Worth holding Barnes on the bench until Jota/Grealish returns? I don't see better alternatives at that price.

I would say parts of some seasons were great... I dont think the money they spent (and still do) on him had the return they expected at all. €100M+ in transfer fees + the gigantic wage bill does not make for his career there... I bet you if they could they would happily give 1 Copa del Rey + 1 Champions League back in return for their money..
