Mahrez and Jesus emerging as Man City’s key form assets

Man City 4-1 Wolves

  • Goals: Riyad Mahrez (£8.1m), Gabriel Jesus x2 (£9.2m) | Conor Coady (£4.8m)
  • Own goals: Leander Dendoncker (£4.6m)
  • Assists: Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan (£6.2m) | Joao Moutinho (£5.2m)
  • Bonus points: Jesus x3, Mahrez x2, Coady x1, Moutinho x1

MAHVELLOUS

Riyad Mahrez (£8.1m) is quietly emerging as a form Manchester City asset after his involvement in their Double Gameweek 26 meeting with Wolves.

In a game that Pep Guardiola rotated several key players once again, it was the Algerian who extended his recent run of scoring Fantasy Premier League points.

He provided the assist for a first-half Leander Dendoncker (£4.6m) own goal, adding his fourth attacking return in as many matches.

And in the closing stages, he pounced on a Nelson Semedo (£5.2m) tackle to fire beyond Rui Patrício (£5.3m) into the bottom corner – his fifth attacking return during the aforementioned timeframe.

Unsurprisingly, that is more than any other Manchester City asset over the same period, which has seen Mahrez put together four successive starts.

GIFT OF THE GAB

Gabriel Jesus‘ (£9.2m) late show ensured Fantasy managers could not afford to overlook him ahead of Double Gameweek 27.

After snatching at most of his chances against Wolves, the Brazilian added two goals after the 80th minute to cement his status as another key form asset for Manchester City.

Ilkay Gundogan (£6.2m) is now the only member of Guardiola’s squad to register more attacking returns than the Brazilian since Gameweek 21.

Jesus has contributed four goals and two assists during that time.

Crucially, the forward was rested in both the Arsenal game in Gameweek 25 and the West Ham trip in Double Gameweek 26, his two substitute appearances in those matches suggesting he could be in line for two starts and significant pitch-time during Double Gameweek 27.

STERLING EFFORT

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) was an unfortunate man in Double Gameweek 26.

After missing the first of Manchester City’s two matches in the round, he was agonisingly close to a big haul in the second.

Guardiola’s formation helped the England international get in some dangerous areas with João Cancelo‘s (£6.2m) left-back role allowing him to peel away from his left-hand station in the front-three and drift into central areas.

In the 73rd minute, Sterling got on the end of a Mahrez cross and backheeled a decent effort just wide of the left-hand post.

And three minutes later, he cut inside from the left and curled a shot just around the right-hand post, shaving it on the way past.

And late-on, he was tackled by Semedo before Mahrez thundered City’s third goal past Patrício.

Sterling owners may also have experienced some frustration with Jesus, who had several opportunities to square to him during the match, often opting to shoot from wide angles instead.

CRACKING THE COAD

While there will be plenty of focus on Manchester City’s defensive assets for Double Gameweek 27, it is worth noting they failed to keep a clean sheet in either Double Gameweek 26 outing.

Conceding to West Ham and Wolves, it was the first time Guardiola’s men had been breached in back-to-back games since November.

There was, of course, a random element to Wolves’ Tuesday-night strike, Conor Coady (£4.8m) finding the net for the first time since April 2018.

Meanwhile, Manchester City restricted Nuno Espirito Santo’s men to one shot on target the entire game.

Those looking to invest at this end of the pitch in Double Gameweek 27 can also take some comfort in Guardiola’s team selection on Tuesday.

John Stones (£5.2m) earned a second benching in his last four matches, perhaps suggesting he stands a good chance of featuring from the beginning against Manchester United and Southampton.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m) has started each of the last four while Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) has now played 90 minutes in three of the last five.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; B Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez.

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Hoever; Jonny (F Silva 55′), Neves (Otasowie 90′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Semedo; Neto, A Traoré.

Sterling is playing too wide to be involved in goals or assist...
as KDB is now an option we could see Gundo & Sterling link play diminish, so are fpl returns.

I saw the game this morning and Sterling could easily have walked off with 2 goals and an assist.

The second Jesus’s goal was only touched barely by a Wolves player....

Would XGI even register him being behind Dendoncker for a tap in for he first goal? Or nearly touching Jesus’ goal for the second? It’s limited in hat sense - same with Stones for Dias goal the other day... or Dias at multiple set pieces throughout the season etc

      Wow 25 amazing
What’s the points gap to crack the top10?
Still plenty of time to improve so wouldn’t do it for the sake of it.
I think some of the bigger names could sit for saints game so Foden could be a great shout but do you expect him to start vs United...risky imo

      Kane looks the captain choice

Tough one - Think KDB gets a rest at some stage but I like KDB's next 3 compared with Bruno's.

If you're chasing I'd go for it.
If you've got a WC left I'd go for it incase you want to get Bruno back.

But if you're doing well I'd look for a differential elsewhere.

Don’t understand why Pep is so obsessed with resting players, but then don’t bother taking advantage of substitutions every game.

    1. Bushwhacker
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 26 days ago

Surely resting players is more advantageous than simple subs ; although he did sub tonight. You generally leave one sub for potential injury.

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 26 days ago

Pep leaves 3 subs for injury most weeks, and has the audacity to complain about wanting 5 subs a game

        1. Bushwhacker
          • 4 Years
          3 years, 26 days ago

There should be 5 subs ; Pep has it easy with a first team of 16 players

If you think long term than short term. He would rather completely rest some players than make everyone play some bits of every game. Doesn't make sense to me personally...

      1. Bushwhacker
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 26 days ago

When you have 16 first team players who you can rotate through why not give them total rest? They’re 13 pts clear because they can completely rest players unlike any other team.

        1. Pukki Blinders
          • 4 Years

You think running around the pitch for 15-20 minutes is going to kill the players? Oh please

          1. WE GO FOR IT
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 26 days ago

It's not going to kill players. But they are winning most games comfortably. So, he doesn't need to give the players on the bnech the 10-15 minutes. As msot them will start the next game anyway.

If there were a set first team, resting them when result is sealed, for 15-20 minutes makes sense. But when he is rotation majority of his team on a weekly basis. There's no need to make substitutions. He can make it if someonw gets injured/looks knackered or they need a goal, like today with Gundo (They scored jjust before he was about to come on).

To het full 90 for many players. That is actually the best way, if you have the quality on bench to do so. That means whenever injuries occur the players coming in are match fit and in rythm.

I was about 140 behind mine a few weeks ago, we're down to 110, and hopefully by the end of the GW less than a hundred. Fighting! (as they say here in Korea).

You need captaincy pick differentials like Bale was this week. Get in a differential player from a team with good fixture(s) and captain them.

Hi guys, I'd appreciate some advice here. I've currently got 6 GW29 players (martinez, coufal, lookman, raphinia, kane & antonio). The original plan was to FH but now I'm wondering if it's better to save it for GW33 and either field 9 players in 29 or take a couple of hits to field 11. I've got the WC in hand as well so can WC out of my 29 team in GW30 or 31. Thoughts?

    A) FH 29
    B) field 9 in 29
    C) take a -4 or -8 to get 10 or 11 players out

I guess but it would mean benching all your city / spurs assets that week. May be able to use that cash to get a lot of upside on FH

This is probably the most sensible approach. I just know I'll get tempted with, it's only a -2 though

If you have 4/5 city + spurs assets then I would FH33. It allows you to be a bit different that week and still keep those players

Currently i only have 4 players for 29, will play with 8 players (-4). I think FH in 33 is more suitable for my team.

    Good morning DZ.

Obviously there's a fear of missing out on Cancelo points. But he's just not delivering apart from that one 17 point GW.

    Bruno+Cancelo >> KDB+Dunk(4)?

Keeping Stones since there's less chance of a cameo.

    Thanks.

Exactly what I came on here for to talk about...Cancelo! At his price point I’m not getting anything special and his “inevitable” haul may take a while to come with so many fish in the pond in the city squad in regards to attacking returns so if I’m just accepting to settle for the clean sheets then maybe I should go back to Stones coz it’s not like Cancelo is more nailed anyway. Then I can use them funds elsewhere. But you know what happens!? They haul just when you get rid lol

GW33. Spurs and City blank. You might have 4/5 fo their players.

Ceiling in 29 is very low. Son, Kane, Grealish (if fit), Bamford, Martinez, Cresswell -> If you own most them with a some of the differentials like Raph, Antonio, Soucek, Coufal, Watkins , you should be fine. 8/9 players is more than good enough that GW.
Games are tough to call anyway. So, you'd be taking risks. Fixtures look good for United, Leicester, Liverpool, Villa in GW33. You can get strong differentials from these teams like Rashford, Cavani, Vardy, Madders (if fit), etc and gain more.

What would be a decent BB score?
Bench was: Areola, Neto, Raph, Taylor

Currently on 14 with Areola (TOT) and Taylor (LEI) left. Realistically, I'd get 3-4 points from them, bringing it up to around 17-18 points. Is that decent?

If one of them keeps a CS, I'd get there. Highly unlikely. Maybe Areola save points can help. Neto YC didn't help today. I was really excited when the game was at 1-1. Felt Neto could get something on the break, but all he did was get booked! Luckily he got an assist vs Newcaste, so not all bad.

City are broken as FPL assets

Dias has either conceded or not played in 5 of last 6 GWs & is relying on infrequent attacking returns to prop up his score

Stones is being rotated with Laporte

Cancelo is being rotated & flatters to deceive with his “imminent” 20 point hauls

KDB is a 12.0 who isn’t prolific enough & has injury previous

Gundo losing his regular place and/or attacking role & has injury previous

Kun, Jesus, Foden, Bilva, Mahrez all competing for limited slots

City 15 points clear & still in late stages of 3 cups

                Time to GTFO city assets

And Sterling - barely even springs to mind - which says it all:

                  Last 4 seasons...

                  - Attacking returns: 35 > 32 > 26 > 16
                  - Returns per appearance: 1.06 > 0.94 > 0.78 > 0.66
                  - XGi: 22.0 > 22.0 > 25.3 > 13.5
                  - XGI Per appearance: 0.66 > 0.64 > 0.84 > 0.61

Ederson is the most expensive GK in the game who has also conceded with increasing regularity & doesn’t get save points

                      one game week 😉

it’s 2 doubles on the bounce for City, players get rotated in doubles and you just need to box clever. Stones has missed 4 out of the last 19 games, I have a bench and can live with that

If you want to avoid a free scoring team that are tight at the bank, great by me 🙂

Still being in 3 cups isn’t going to help Pep Roulette - it will 100% worsen - with Laporte back Stones has missed 3 of the last 8, keeping 2 cleansheets in that 8-gameweek run... the goal has helped mask this tremendously - same with Dias

Serious thought needs to be given to divesting from 1 or 2 of them post-GW27 imo - being a great team doesn’t automatically make them great FPL assets for the last 10 gameweeks - where they will have no doubles, 2 blanks & increasing (not decreasing) rotation

                        Caveat Emptor!

                  I'm losing Cancelo/Gundo for a BGW29 player in GW 28/29.
The fact that thhey don't play in 33 and I don't have FH, means I can only have a limited players from Spurs and City, and since I plan to double/triple up on Spurs, at least one City player will go soon. I'm liking Cancelo to Reguilon. Not as attacking, but still offers some threat. Has more goal involvements than Cancelo as well.

Stones a 100% hold imo. He's one of the top PPG players and is benchable at 5.2m. Pretty much agree with everything else though (Gundog to a lesser extent once again because of his price).

                5. bench boost for every gamew…

I think you are right, but one is not a problem to own, having several would lead to despair.

If you've got a Salah or a Sterling it might be worth holding him for a week and using the funds to better your team with a double transfer.
