Scoutcast Episode 369 – Tackling Manchester City’s underwhelming double

Joe is joined by Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy and FPL Family’s Lee to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of Double Gameweek 27.

Last Gameweek was the biggest in FPL history, with 14 teams playing twice. This time around it’s a different matter. Only Manchester City and Southampton enjoy two fixtures, while the regulation single match awaits the other teams.

Joe, Lee and Andy consider the best strategies of approaching this underwhelming Double Gameweek.

There’s a particular focus on Pep Guardiola’s troops, who host big-six low-scoring draw specialists Manchester United on Sunday, ahead of Southampton’s visit.

Are Fantasy Premier League managers’ current trio of City assets among the best armband shouts, or is the relatively low-owned Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) worth bringing in?

To acquire the Belgian chance-creator-in-chief, a premium sacrifice needs to be made in midfield. For Andy, the 60%-owned Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) could very well make way.

Elsewhere, the Liverpool half of FPL Family, Lee, is forced to introduce a section in praise of Tottenham Hotspur and the strong form of Gareth Bale (£9.3m). This will no doubt be eagerly watched by his Spurs-supporting wife, Sam.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s kind run of games continues. But with their main creators injured, who is left to assist Foxes’ marksman Jamie Vardy (£10.2m)?

Our trio look at their Gameweek 26 so far during the show, which took place via our  YouTube channel on Tuesday night as City prepared to kick off against Wolverhampton Wanderers. They also reveal their captaincy and transfer plans for the week ahead.

There are fixtures to frisk, a differential to choose and the crew pay tribute to their podcast colleague Luke and his audacious assault on Gameweek 26.

Tough season to manage. Seems straying from the template too much punishes. Then in the same vein the template slows any progress leading to frustration and straying from the template only to be punished again. WC in 26 has left me with a team I now don’t like, even though I have had a slightly above average gw so far.

also, taking Martinez out for Johnstone when villa got that blank (for a hit).

Son to Barnes when Mourinho said he was injured as a specific transfer.

Planning a wildcard after gameweek 2 to bring in Wolves and City players. Barely scraped 30 points for the next 2 weeks.

Holding Foden for 10 weeks after said wildcard.

Not playing aggressively enough on the double gameweeks (this one included).

That's about the only thing I've got right. Bad moves:

      - starting without Salah
      - starting with Ali
      - WC out double SOU defence in GW3
      - WC in triple city, wolves and spurs in GW3
      - just about every transfer I made between GW 3 and GW10

      😀

5 million OR at GW10, hoping to break 1m this week so things have gradually turned

Not trusting Spurs at the start of the season has to be my worst decision.

Buying Rashford over Bruno in GW6. Cost me 50+ points I calculated. For a single gameweek, it was selling Son in GW4 for Mahrez. That also had a huge knock-on effect because it meant I didn't have 2 FTs the week that KdB got injured (which would've allowed me to get Kane).

Two really critical early mistakes that hurt. If I get both of those correct I'm probably up 100 points total because my transfers then have different priority.

Not having Salah in GW1. Also having Pepe, Havertz, etc (weird team I had)

Although not having Salah in GW1 made me wildcard in GW2 and bring in Martinez, Grealish, Bruno, DCL, who all did really well. Sometimes bad FPL decisions can secretly be good things.

I've had 5 transfers in which have immediately got injured and had to take hits to remedy- but more bad luck than bad decisions.

Worst decision was probably breaking one of my golden rules in picking players for GW1 that had no PL history. Went for Werner & Havertz and held them about 4-5 weeks too long.

Callum Wilson in in GW12 for his worst run of form of the season.

Eric Dier in in GW14 to GW21, one clean sheet in that period and even dropped just when I needed him to come off the bench, leaving me with 9 men in GW21.

Antonio in for GW23, blanks as captain v Fulham and then injured for Sheffield U. Sell, then 2 goals in 2 games v Spurs and City. Troll.

GW19 The decision to keep Pulisic over Grealish for the DGW.

The logic was sound. Villa were coming off a Covid break, couldn't be sure who was affected or who was even available to play. Chelsea had a nice run off fixtures. Pulisic hardly played for those few weeks and Grealish ticked over nicely points wise.

Would almost certainly be in the top 100 OR if I'd gone the other way.

This whole thread it a train wreck of hindsight masters.

“I was going to sell Salah to I could triple captain DCL for his inevitable hat trick blah blah blah”.

That’s not a mistake, that’s a realisation that you could have done something better, a mistake is when you’ve actively done something stupid!

        WC in GW3
Abandoning Martinez after covid-outbreak in November
Didn't get Kane before last GW apart from on FH
Too much patience with TAA to begin with
Going with Watkins over Grealish for too long

Despite that it looks like this might be my best season overall, guess the good decisions, less hits compared to previous seasons and some luck compensated for the bad decisions.

using FH in gw 11, i somehow managed to have my worst gw rank of the season in a very high scoring gw despite have the pick of any player i wanted

a whole bunch of my players were expected to be out or rested so using the FH by itself wasn't a terrible decision, but in hindsight the team i picked was awful and only scored half the points of my original team if i had done nothing, it took weeks to get my season back on track afterwards 🙁

Trying to be too clever with Son.
Instead of setting and forgetting I played the Hokey Cokey and missed 66 points out of his 123 double digit point haul.
I even took him out in GW26 for Barnes and we all know how that ended.

        Main two:
        - Selling Son/Kane after GW1 in frustration, missing their mega haul and then immediately bringing them back in for a hit
        - Selling Salah when Jota was matching him for performance only for Salah to smash it the following weeks and Jota to get injured

        Extras:
        - Selling Justin after a few weeks thinking he'd dip and he didn't
        - Choosing McArthy over Martinez
        - Going Double Chelsea defense just as they started conceding every week

I sold Hamez before he scored 18 points against Brighton in week 2, in order to fund City players because I was convinced they were going to have a goal fest with Leeds.

Transferring out Martinez TWICE and being burned both times.

        Gw5 bring him in
GW 11 swap him out for McCarthy = lose points
        GW19 bring him in
GW 23 swap him out for Pope = lose points

For this double gameweek I was fully intending to swap out Pope for Martinez as I knew even though they both had doubles, Marti was definitely going to outscore pope.

Instead of doing that for a -4, I got in Targett and a Fulham defender (Aina -4) so I could play my benchboost to offset the hits I was taking.

Aina is subbed after 45 minutes, Targett gets 7 points to Martinez's 12...

Literally I should have just left in Martinez this entire time. I am now going to bring him in for Pope and it is going to cost me another transfer I shouldn't be using.

Lesson learned - bring in Martinez and DO NOT TOUCH HIM 😛

Not selecting Salah for GW1 & I never recovered being behind everyone - nit selecting double Man C defence, selling Justin & Canceló when folk on here said they would be dropped.. so many bad decisions - all chips have failed (7pts BB) and on DCL as current TC & didn’t select Kane or Son - so many captain failures - struggling to find a realistic target finish - maybe just get into top 500,000 (I came 3,500 last season)

Lots of chat about Barnes replacement

Wondering if midterm the answer might be fodder or the inexpressibly annoying Soucek and power defence in a 4-4-2 - especially if you look through 29 as an irrelevance and calculate that City are still good despite WH and Wolves. Loads of options at the back to add to double City

      Pereira
      Digne
      Reguilon
      Cresswell
      Azpi! or Rudiger
Robbo/TAA - looking at Liverpool fixtures not form
      AWB

Think I'd back most of these - or certainly the right combo - to beat any 5th mid.

Sounds like a good idea but at the same time I'm not sure it's worth bringing in City assets for a DGW, for the majority of their players it can end up being a single GW. Foden has only played 50 minutes between the last 3 PL games

He didn't play a minute against Arsenal and then only played 25 in each game this week. I'm not saying there's absolutely concretely no chance he starts even just one match of the two this week but if you need a dependable starter he's not exactly the one to go for. Pep loves go rotate and has said he'll keep doing it in the next few weeks, and with the form of Bernardo and Gundogan in particular and KDB back now there's one spot with less of a chance of Foden taking up.

Only played 25 mins in last 3. To be hi at it’s a lottery with any of them. Just feel he will get 2 starts next gw. Seeing what he did to Liverpool he could easily do the same against Utd and Saints, well that could be a cricket score and even off the bench he could get a couple of returns.

Who have you got? Agree with the rationale of getting at least 1 game from your City lot. If Grealish is fit this week I'm considering boosting:

        Forster (shu, mci)
        Coufal (LEE)
        DCL (che)
        Dunk (LEI)

I'd be happy with all 15 playing and picking up 1 return from that bench and getting 12-15 points from it.

KDB has a conversion rate of 1% this season...

is that what we are paying 11.6m for?

Due a correction? I'm captaining him and hoping that he will come good in the double.

Not due a correction at all, he’s there for the assists and nothing more

After the season he had last season, 11.5 seemed like a generous price tbh. And I don’t think many people had it in them to go without him. He’ll probably haul this week when he’s not being considered much.

11.8 but yes you are right. I got him to be different but I feel seriously underwhelmed as I have been lol season. Looks great but delivers very few FPL points considering his value.

It’s more so that Gundo has made him look not such a good option imo.

I think what makes this Nightmare GW worse is the drip-feeding of games. I don't want the free games to stop as that seems beyond selfish of me but I can acknowledge that it hurts my enjoyment of FPL sometimes.

It is pretty cool when there's multiple 3pm Saturday afternoon games simultaneously. I miss that too, drip feeding is just not the same buzz

It's the same every week. I don't enjoy it at all. Double game weeks just make it worse (especially if you're having a bad one!).

I kind of like the drip feed of games if you remove the FPL aspect out of it.
I look forward to watching PL everyday after stressful hours at work.

Which one to go on a -4 (Own Martinez already)

      A) Mee + Bruno > Konsa + Son
      B) Allioski + Bruno > Konsa + Son
      C) Mee + Bruno > B. White + Son
      D) Allioski + Bruno > B.White + Son

I've seen lots of talk about bringing in Jota. Seems way too soon to me considering he hasn't played a minute yet. Surely we should wait until he's had a few appearances off the bench at least...

What are your thoughts on taking hits to field 11 players?

For example, if you have less than 11 in GW29 is it worth taking a hit? (assuming WC in GW30).

Assuming the player will get at least 2 points, it's a downside of -2 points vs unlimited upside - Probably worth it.

Yes why not, unless it is like a -16 hit.

I don't see the difference here though. Surely each hit should be taken in isolation?

i.e. if one hit is worth it to get 7 players out, then a further 4 hits should also be worth the risk to field 11

I'm personally looking forward to the unlimited upside of Ben White.

Yes of course you have to consider the likelihood of the player scoring points.

For Ben White probably minimum 1 point (-3 hit) and potential 15 pointer with a goal and clean sheet (+11 gain) ?

Also probably better options than him

Ben white hasn’t scored all season so you’d have to be very lucky to transfer him in when he scores

Depends which players you are bringing in, if you think the player will hit at least 6 go for it if your 50/50 on them I wouldn’t

I would argue that the following players would have > 4xP in GW29

          Kane
          Son
          Bale
          Reguilon
          Bamford
          Raphinha
          Dallas
          Auba
          Antonio
          Cresswell
          Watkins
          Grealish
          Martinez
