Captain Poll

Vote in the FPL Gameweek 30 captain poll

Fantasy Football Scout users can now vote in the captain poll for Gameweek 30, either in the side-bar or at the footer of this article.

The upcoming armband debate is expected to be another interesting one with a number of fixtures available to target.

Harry Kane (£11.6m) and Spurs will certainly fancy their chances of finding the net at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies conceded three times in a morale-damaging defeat to Brighton last time out while Jose Mourinho’s men were 2-0 winners at Aston Villa.

Still, will Spurs’ problems on the road this season cause a problem again? After netting 11 goals in their first two away matches this season, they have scored 13 times in the subsequent 13, one per match.

Liverpool and Manchester City assets have been regular fixtures on the captaincy radar over the last few seasons but Gameweek 30 is unlikely to see many of their representatives vying for the armband.

The Reds face a trip to Arsenal, while Manchester City visit a third-placed Leicester City, who could have some of their key men back in the fold by then.

Accordingly, some Fantasy managers may turn to Chelsea as they host relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion.

That said, the fixture is perhaps less appealing in reality as it appears on paper.

Chelsea have scored three goals across their last four matches, including blanks against Manchester United and Leeds.

Meanwhile, the Baggies have tightened things up at the back. Three of their five clean sheets this season have come in the last five matches, in which West Brom have conceded just two goals.

Elsewhere, Manchester United host a Brighton side with a point to prove about their expected goals, West Ham’s in-form attackers go to Wolves and Leeds host Sheffield United.

Make sure you cast your vote in the latest poll below. Our full data analysis on the Gameweek 30 captaincy, the Captain Sensible article, will be published later this week.

Definitely a good single gameweek for a BB with the main guys fixtures.

If Stones plays & Son is fit, it'll probably beat my BB from DGW (15 points).

You could wait for a DGW, but I'd probably just play it now to be honest

There is a fair chance that one of Stones or Dias doesn't play, McCarthy and Bale are benching risks and Son is a doubt. I wouldn't personally bench boost

BB after int’l break is risky in given you don’t know who has picked up an issue. Still a double game week to go.

He's a great option pretty much every week.

But, if you look at his home form v's his away form over a very long period, you'll find he's perhaps not THE best option this week.

That would be Kane by the way 🙂

Not sure how far any fixture is that poor for City attack right now

Since the turn of the year they have scored 43 goals in 16 matches: that compares to 21 in their first 14 matches. This is the form of the last 2 seasons really. They've also put 4 past Liverpool and 3 past both Chelsea and Spurs in that time. Only United and Arsenal of traditional big match ups have help them up.

Leicester also conceded 3 to a rotated Arsenal recently.

I agree. Think you can almost ignore fixture rating for City.

    2. thegaffer82

      3 years, 29 days ago

For City players, it's not that any particular fixture is too hard for them or anything like that.

It's more of a case that the league is nigh on wrapped up already and their 'B Team' can beat almost anyone in the league.

So no need for Pep to play the likes of KDB, Gundy etc... in the remaining league games. (They will play some of the games of course - but I guess there will plenty of no-shows around the CL fixtures)

        Possibly true

I'm slightly sceptical about rotation being far worse here on in. The league was wrapped up this time last year too and City had an almost identical schedule from memory. Slightly more rotation than normal then but nothing excessive.

My guess is he puts his A side out against Leicester - he rarely rotates abnormally with a top of the table clash. The CL timing is awkward of course.

Hi everyone. Haven't started along around with a gw31 wildcard yet - but one of the crucial things is going to be whether to include kdb and other city assets

City have Leeds in gw31 and kdb is a top captain option. Problem is the game is sandwiched tightly between madrid games and good chance he will be benched

Salah and jota also good shouts v villa and a longer turnaround with champs league

So I'm wondering if people will pick kdb of not on gw31 wildcard. If we captain him we simply put our trust in pep

I'm wondering if gundog and dias on wildcard is best. Or maybe no city at all. Thanks

    1. thegaffer82
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 29 days ago

I wouldn't pick him on WC that's for sure.

I mean the funny thing about KDB is that he's been (relatively) poor all season long. He's scored less goals than Soucek. Even JWP is above him in the mids overall table. And, on top of that, he's gunna be rotated possibly fairly heavily for the cup games now.

I would keep Gundy though as he is such good value and as long as you have a bench, I can't see it being a big problem if he's rotated

Not sure how much weight to put on recent KdB form here outside the PL with goals in the FA Cup, CL and for Belgium. Those goals effectively double his output for the season.

I’m personally staying away and will just accept he’ll get his usual occasional 14 point returns from here on out. Just can’t see myself having a near 12m player that I won’t be brave enough to captain in my side and risk coming on for cameos, would rather go with Mahrez or even Gundo/Foden. Especially if City wrap up the league ASAP as well

I may be looking into this too much, but why is Kane in virtually all WC drafts but Son in virtually none? Is it that people think there’s more options in midfield than there is up top, or is Kane being on pens swaying it? Or is it something I’m missing all together. Granted you’d have to be brave to go without Kane on your WC but you could make a better team without him, or even combining him and Son could pay off with Spurs still having a DGW, Leeds & Sheffield to play

A valid point but with Son a doubt to play next GW, people will naturally, albeit recency bias, pick fit players moving forward and not risk a 9.5 mil bencher.

It may be simply because he's not on the FPL stage at the moment. Therefore out of sight; out of mind. I'm sure that a lot of FH'ers like me are still holding Kane & Son. There are so many on-form mid-price/budget midfielders that many WC's would probably go Lingard or Jota with fixtures rather than a more expensive Spurs option with the likelihood of similar returns.

If you think Bruno goes so much better than Auba. It is a punt but why not if chips don't help you later. What i mean is, if you WC in 31 you are really looking at a 1 game punt. I will usually only take a hit looking at 3+ future fixtures.

Brag alert: from 2.76M OR in GW12 to 165k in GW29 - it's my best ever rank rise in a season. The main factors is steadying my ship were to stop playing the Son hokey cokey and stop points chasing after a bad start and a poor GW3 wildcard. Justin and Gundo were my stars, and then i think i largely nailed the remaining chips. But it does show that bad starts can be rectified, so keep trying.

Looking at the points differences, breaking into the top 100k let alone 10k is going to be a mission.

WC3 was kneejerk and an attempt at reaching a template that hadn't formed. I decided early on to save FH (so not use on GW18) - which helped with building the team in the right direction. Got my MCI three in at just the right time, with Gundo, Stones and KDB. Then decided early on with WC25, BB26, FH29 (is that right?)

Interesting to see the captaincy vote. 75% on the top 4 (all forwards) and 90%, being the top 10 picks (all forwards) Can you, as expressed in some posts look at a defender? Get into the gambling den knowing you will get even money on Kane who, looking at past results with an easy fixture is probably that, getting 10 points plus and making a little progress up the rankings.
Or take a punt on a defender? Dallas a sure starter being 11 on the list or Alonso who plays 50% of games who has forward potential will fire you up the rankings can be tempting. But and a big but, you still need Kane to fail. Let us PRESUME Kane fails (50% chance) and a defender performs (10%) one can fly up the rankings (A 5% possibility) OR: go Azpi/Rudiger who have a 70% chance of a clean sheet and 7 points? I know this is a sample pick and there are many alternatives and I do make presumptions, but it will be interesting to hear the views of the punters on site. I like quiet posting moments like this as one tends to get more insight.
This GW could be interesting as so many WC in GW31 which is when the run in really takes shape.

      Dunno

Think the whole equation becomes much easier if you at least hold the runaway pick and perhaps a couple of the other leading candidates. Then you're down by just one Kane and not two if he hauls.

That said I pay almost zero attention to the poll or what other people do - I simply use it to judge what are thought to be good picks something that is normally fairly self-evident anyway. My normal reasoning is that if my captain returns healthily I move up no matter what other people do. I've certainly had a number of green arrows when I've gone against the popular pick.

I don't see any problem with a defender pick - I started the season with the assumption that TAA/Robbo were perfectly feasible captain picks. Their 6 pointers plus baps likely matching a single return from a mid and a high probability of an attacking return that made them de facto mids.

Both Alonso and Dallas could fit the model this week. If they both start I'd have both as very solid 6 pointers anyway and have good chances of attacking returns. The principal difference I see is that neither is much of an assister so are more likely to be outpaced by a mid/forward from their teams or put another way a fairly low assist rate limits your chances of a double return. And when I look at my captain I'm generally looking for the most likely double return.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 28 days ago

Or put another another way I don't see the percentage in choosing a differential for the sake of it just to move up the rankings.

Even in a week where there is a 50% plus captain that means that approx 50% are not captaining that player (perhaps a lower figure in the upper reaches). If he's the best choice and he returns you still move up on captaincy against those that didn't captain him.

We all want the bang if possible. Sometimes we choose a "differential" when the reason for low ownership or low captaincy is for a good reason and becomes a risk.

I certainly look for differential picks - some hit and some don't of course. I also happily move off highly owned players partially on the reason that there is an upside to losing a player that others are keeping principally because they are highly owned.

When it comes to captaincy though I don't take that into account much. Inconsistent perhaps. I bring the differential in on the hope that I've seen something others haven't. If my judgement was good and he is returning then I'll captain him but that won't be because he's differential as a captain merely because he's the best pick in my side.

In this week I'd happily bring Alonso in but not sure I'd bother captaining him as I suspect the double return is a longer shot than Bamford/Raph say. I guess this is a restatement of "it's enough just to own him". If Chelsea were banging in goals and he was assisting then I'd captain him happily. But then I suspect he wouldn't be differential!

Absolutely. I have gone early with the WC and taken some calculated risks. There are players I will move to later an maneuver through BGW and DGW's.
              Give me an honest appraisal:
              Mendy Forster
Alonso Robbo Dallas Shaw Stones (Heavy I Know but covering Alonso Dallas Stones)
Bruno Son Jota Mahrez Raphina (Not sure how to get Salah)
DCL Bamford Kane (Will get Ihanaco later)

Zero ITB (DCL to Ihanaco now would make me more versatile)

                Like it a lot

Triple Leeds looks odd I guess with double Spurs also in 31. But part of me wonders whether they might not surprise in the fixture swing now as they did early season - Liverpool in 32 isn't that bad a fixture at any rate.

Really like Mahrez call and think holding Son Kane adds up provided you can navigate 33.

If anything I'd lose DCL as only this week looks good in short to mid term and Everton home haven't been tearing it up but I suspect you know that 🙂

The other one I'd look at to save itb for possible Mo is Robbo to Cresswell. Neither is great for cs early on and the assist potential is relatively equal or perhaps even favours Cresswell. If Alonso looks out then he can easily become Robbo later when the really good defensive fixtures start for Liverpool.

If Spurs DGW falls in 32 then Kane to Mo must be a possibility in 33. You'd still have Son for SHU in 34.

                  Tnks for in depth reply.
Having 2 Leeds will save me a tfr later for sure.
33 is a pain but a Citeh/Spurs tfr may solve it.
DCL (and a toffee too) is my weakest link IMO
Robbo is there for later and calculating tfrs I am already forced to take with the side I have, swayed me to get him now. I did think him to Rudiger.
Alonso is a hope good points or no substitution for a 1 pointer.
I will take your advice on Robbo I think

I look at the poll for a rough idea on effective ownership. I appreciate the inaccuracy though. Point taken in looking at a single entity rather than my approach.
A lot of what you say above is to my way of thinking. The likes of TAA and Robbo have been less apparent this season. I have therefore, ignored them.
Aloso needs back up from the bench. However he will start on not plat at all which holds value in itself.

What's the best transfer here do you reckon...

    ............Martinez
    ..Shaw - Stones - Cresswell
    Bruno - Son - Auba - Gundy - Raph
    .......Kane - BamBam
Bench: Watkins - Holgate - Veltman
    1FT & 1.5 ITB

    A) Holgate > Rudiger
    B) Holgate > Azpi (A & B mean I will bench Cresswell next week)
    C) Auba > Mount
    D) Auba > Havertz
    E) Auba > Salah (I'm gunna get him at some stage but maybe not this week)
    F) Auba > Jota
    G) Save FT

It would be a pretty decent BB i feel. The fixtures are good-ish for those guys and I'm sure you'll beat my 15points BB disaster during DGW.

But, on the other hand, can't help but feel that with WC in pocket, you could attack one of the remaining DGW's down the line and get an even bigger score.

So, save for another week perhaps?

I wouldn't get Leno, he rarely keeps clean sheets, it's roughly about 1 every 4 games in his Arsenal career. Plus if you seen the way Arsenal defended in the first 30 minutes vs West Ham you would stay well clear. Rotation in the defence due to Europa league priority won't help clean sheets either.

But if I really wanted Son I'd probably rather lose KDB than Gundy. Purely because of Gundys price... he's benchable and if he doesn't play then you just make sure you have a decent bench player to replace him (like Raph or Soucek)

The top 10 likely avoided the FFS/Twitter template early in the season (#1 certainly did) and went for players like Bamford, Kane, Justin from the start. Then those players became template and the top 10 stuck with them, preventing others from gaining much ground on them. Since they had picked the right team from the start, they didn't have to waste their first WC early, and could use it when they needed it.

I think part of this is related to fixtures not playing as large a part this year. So many teams are not too far above or below average, so there aren't too many great or terrible fixtures. Thus if you're ahead, you can just stick with players who have done well from the start, and not run too much risk of losing ground to other managers who select low owned premiums with better fixtures.

Really interested to see so many people looking at defensive transfers (eg Coady, Rudiger, Azpi, etc) unless you are on Wildcard I think these players are a waste of transfers this late on in the season. Unless you have a WC or utterly awful defence, these players are not going to get much more than a CS, and with 9 games left won’t make a huge difference. Plus clean sheets more unpredictable towards end of season.

I have one Def transfer and that will either be Alonso or Cresswell (depend how brave I feel) then that will be it.

For me, strategy now needs to ensure you that you have transfers to make sure you have 3 or 4 of the best attacking assets for each week, and maybe a few nice differentials.

Look back over the last 10 GW's at who the top 5 points scorers have been in every almost every single week over that period and you will see it is completely dominated by DFers.

And, at the same time, the so called big players (Salah, Bruno, Mane, Son etc...) have done next to nothing.

Not sure your analysis is particularly accurate or helpful to be honest

Fernandes, Salah, Jota, Kane, KDB, Gundo, Mahrez, Vardy, Auba, Son, Grealish (DGW), DCL ((DGW), Raphina - players that can realistically get double digit hauls before end of season.

Everyone has a right to play the game as they would like, for me it I will be trying to get the best combo of these each week

You are dealing with a completely different period of the season. There have been a disproportionate amount of CS in the last few weeks due to different factors (mainly due to more games in smaller period of time causing less quality). Moving forward games more spread out with less teams in cup competitions.

Also just a quick comparison but Fernandes (apparently not at his best) gas outscored Azpi (ever present in best defence) by 10 pts in last 8 GWKS.

That wasn’t my the point I was trying to make. I would rather spend a transfer each week on moving attacking players around so that I have those that have a greater chance of getting 12-18 pts, as opposed to having a stronger defence that has a better chance of CS

Which season has shown more CS in second half of season? My point is there has been a significant increase in CS over recent GW’s and I have detailed why I believe this is, and why it won’t continue.

As mentioned in my original post if you have an awful defence then there may be an arguemenf for this. Of the players you mention I have 2, which I guess most do at least. Rather than spend 3 or 4 of my last 9 transfers getting a ‘perfect’ defence I will be focusing on moving around the attacking players.

I think your analysis of why there's been a lot of clean sheets is lacking in substance to be honest. There's been pretty much constant footy since GW9 I think...
There will still be plenty of cleanies to be had between now and the end of the season.

People like Shaw, Rudi/Azpi and even City DFers like Dias/Stones are fantastic signings and will score a lot of points going forward. I wouldn't warn people away from them with some flimsy argument that doesn't really stand up to any scrutiny at all.

The attacking players are the ones who are letting people down. Probably best to just hold the ones who you are backing to do well and just set and forget.

Good man. What Top Dog says has credence but clean sheets are due to forwards playing too many games knackered. Cast you mind back to the start of the season when clean sheets were a total rarity. IMO (to be honest) Clean sheets will remain common place.

Probably his lack of minutes recently counting against him all do he did start the last 2 games. Chelsea are also not exactly free-scoring, just 4 goals in their last 5 league games. This looks like a match Chelsea might win 1 or 2 nil so I think there are much better options to back for the captaincy this week.

I might buy him this week for Auba...

But you can't kid yourself that he's a top captain option. It's punt, pure and simple.

You are punting that the fixture + a change in position will equal a big score.
But, there's very little to go off that says it will come to fruition.

I'll be happy to just punt on owning him (if that's what I decide to do). I won't captain him for sure

He trends like a top captaincy option right now.

        - He's the current front runner for starting false 9 for Chelsea - OoP no less
        - Chelsea are in really good form.
        - Havertz played the same role for Germany and scored a few days ago.
        - West Brom at home is one of the best fixtures possible.
        - Form, fixtures and OoP. It's hard to argue against.

He is a top option imo with a bit of risk depending on whether he will start/is fit back from International duty. I don't know why you'd put the likes of Vardy and Iheanacho on the list vs City. Nobody is gonna cap them surely.

I do think he is among my top considerations for captain - Kane, Havertz, Raphinha are the 3 I'm looking at.

What form? He has one goal in his last five starts and that was for Germany, not Chelsea.

2 assists though a few weeks ago, he has the volume of shots and the goal for Germany. It's something.

Ah my bad, was checking whoscored which doesn't count fantasy assists. Though not sure Chelsea have shown enough themselves offensively so far to justify capping one of their attackers, generous as West Brom can be.

          "..top captaincy option.."

          surely not.

I think what’s more surprising is how far Kane is ahead of the others... Leeds, Chelsea, Man United also have a very good fixture for captaincy this week and yet Kane is just miles ahead... group think plays a huge part in these polls.

Could also be the fact that he's a massive flat track bully, extremely reliable captain option and has 30 PL goal involvements this season already while up against Newcastle but that's just me.

Has no European football to worry about the midweek after either, just something to consider with Chelsea/Utd/City assets

Yeah... No where did I say he’s a bad option. I’m saying that he’s not BY FAR the best option, as the poll suggests.

Suspect no fewer than 8 City attackers reduces the spots elsewhere 🙂

Agree that Havertz deserves a place somewhere. All those City options looks a little odd given the text of the article says that City may not be that good an option.

They should include an "Other" option because they can never cover all the options people might be interested in.

Ask yourself why did you get Auba in the first place?

Possibly because, like Saka, he had a fixture in BGW29?

At his price I would want more than a BGW. Saka made sense. I think he thought of Auba for the long term maybe

Auba was a 1 week punt.

Saka been in my team for too long.
