Scout Network pick out favourite players for Gameweek 30

With so many Fantasy Premier League managers planning a Gameweek 31 Wildcard, there is a lot of freedom from Gameweek 30.

For some, it provides the opportunity for a one-week punt, so we’ve asked the Scout Network to pick out their favourite options based on the fixtures this weekend.

El Statto

The Scout Squad picks for FPL Gameweek 3

Clean sheets are the best starting point for an FPL defender’s value and, at home to West Bromwich Albion, I am expecting another one for Chelsea this weekend. With Reece James (£5.0m) there is always the option of attacking returns thanks to his impressive delivery from wide, so he would be a good pick this week for points possibilities at both ends.

A home game against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 30 should result in a comfortable home win for Everton. With four goals in his last six games Richarlison (£8.0m) goes into the game with some for form behind him. Palace are averaging 1.9 goals against in their away games so every chance there will be a few goals for Everton and Richarlison in this one.

Auto Draft 5

Jesse Lingard (£6.2m) has been in sensational form since joining West Ham and is showing no sign of slowing down. He made his away back into the England team and that can only do great things for his confidence. With returns in six of his seven starts he looks a great pick for Gameweek 30.

Chelsea have been rock solid under new management and play a West Brom side who have only scored twice in their last seven games. Chelsea look destined for a clean sheet and no Blues defender is as nailed on as club captain Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.8m). He has started every game under Tuchel and is currently enjoying a two-week break because of his non-involvement with the Spanish national team.

FPL Family

Newcastle have only kept one clean sheet in their last four Premier League matches and they are top for defensive tackles lost across the same period. In contrast, Spurs have scored eight goals in the same period, the fourth-best in the league. Harry Kane (£11.6m) is top for goals scored among forwards this season (17) and with the likely return of Son Heung-min (£9.4m) he will have his supply line reopened.

There are not many opponents more appealing than Sheffield United this season, especially since Chris Wilder left the club. The Blades have conceded 50 goals over the course of the season and lost 23 matches. Leeds should be able to capitalise on this and, if he recovers from the knock, I expect Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) to have plenty of opportunities to add to the 14 goals and six assists he has registered in the Premier League this season.

FPL Family

Ted Talks FPL

Operation ‘Target Sheffield United‘ should be on everyone’s radars. The Blades have the highest figure for expected goals conceded (xGC) over the last six matches and are still without a replacement for Wilder. Leeds host Sheffield United in Gameweek 30 and will look to put as many past Ramsdale as they can. Bamford could be one to fear this week and even a captain contender. He suffered a knock against Fulham but is likely to recover over the international break.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m) must relishing the prospect of facing a Crystal Palace side who have conceded 59 shots in the box in the last six Gameweeks; only Sheffield United and Wolves have conceded more. Calvert-Lewin scored against Burnley in Gameweek 28, and has added a further two to his season tally during the international break. Among forwards over the last four Gameweeks, only Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.7m) and Kane have recorded more big chances than the Everton frontman.

Ted Talks FPL

FPL Experiment Podcast

Raphinha (£5.7m) has the perfect combination of going into Gameweek 30 with excellent form and a great fixture. Leeds are flat-track bullies, with their performances against the bottom seven teams seeing them take 24 points from a possible 27. And Raphinha’s recent form would suggest if Leeds score he will be involved. Since Gameweek 22, the Brazilian leads the way in the league for chances created and big chances created. He looks primed to perform this week.

Despite Tuchel’s Chelsea being a force to be reckoned with defensively (11 clean sheets from 14 games), they are yet to set the world alight from an attacking perspective. There are few more prime opportunities to change that than a visit from West Brom, who have conceded 57 goals this season, more than any other side. Looking at the Chelsea attacking prospects who are statistically less immune to rotation, Mason Mount (£7.0m) looks like the standout option. Mount has racked up nine goal attempts over the last four games (scoring once),he has also created seven chances for his team mates over the same period.

Double Gameweek 25 Scout Picks features Leeds triple-up

Depends what you mean by form. His stats have been nothing special and he’s far exceeded his expected returns. Someone does this every season though and you keep expecting them to tail off but they never do.

Hard to predict but the stats suggest it can’t be sustained.

Given his free role, he will continue getting into dangerous positions and will likely return a good number of points.

If you can't trust your own judgement, but lean towards the wisdom of the crowd, how would EO help you tap into the wisdom of the crowd?

EO is all about which players which players were most highly owned last GW, and/or have done well in the past (top 10k EO) . I don't understand how that helps you figure out what decision the crowd thinks you should make, or even which players they think will do well in the future, especially given that people are not buying and captaining players solely on the basis that they are predicting high returns (they, too, are factoring ownership and other things into their decisions).

I'd like to hear some good arguments, not only for why, but for how to use the wisdom of the crowd.

Or if EO is not about the wisdom of the crowd, then what is the benefit?

    1. Tomerick
      • 9 Years

It’s just that sword and shield analogy again. The EO players you need are the shields. The kind of players like Bruno or Son where not having them can mean a massive drop when they haul. You need to then balance it with differential swords that people haven’t caught onto yet.

EO alone will only ever result in middling scores.

This is such BS. You NEVER need a high EO player, at least not BECAUSE they are high EO.

Take Salah as an example, 28 points in the last 8 GWs. What has he shielded anyone from other than scoring points? 😆

If you think he'll score a lot of points by all means have him. If not then drop him. To avoid making a judgement of your own through the excuse of 'shields' and EO is just drab. I'd have thought that you'd want the 11 best 'swords' you can find.

But hey, maybe competent mediocrity is the height of your aspirations?

        1. Tomerick
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 21 days ago

You’ll probably notice that I didn’t give Salah as an example for that exact reason.

You’ll also notice my last sentence “EO alone will only ever result in middling scores” so how did you arrive at the conclusion that I was advocating that?

EO is not something live or die by but it is a guide to allow you to hedge your bets. A punt that results in a Ward-Prowse brace is all well and good but if Bruno gets a hat trick and you didn’t have him you’ll lose out overall or at least have your points negated by a large proportion of players.

As I said for anyone with a slightest level of comprehension the best teams will take EO into account in their decision making to guard against potential losses whilst also looking for differentials. If it was as easy as you say to pick 11 swords and rampage to victory we would all be doing it and you’d probably find no one on this site.

Ruth isn't using the politest tactic to rebuff your reply, but he has already demonstrated his reading comprehension.

You can guard against potential losses by buying the players you have determined will score more points. The losses in FPL can be measured in points. Measuring in OR before GW38 is just fun, but not useful for decision-making. Keeping players you think will get fewer points isn't guarding against (points) losses, it's inviting them. If you think Son and Bruno and Salah are likely to score more points than alternative combinations of players, then that would be a good reason to keep them (You and Ruth both agree on this, I'm fairly sure), but then what does EO have to do with it?

As soon as you start measuring gains and losses in OR, you are hog-tying your potential gains. Ultimately there are no such things as losses in FPL (except if players score minus points, or when comparing the points outcome of one decision versus another). If you don't want to risk losing points, you should make the decision that's likely to lead you to the most points. If that involves asking the crowd for their wisdom, so be it. But if you sell Fernandes and he gets 10 points, while your new player gets 10 points, you are even. You haven't lost anything, even if Bruno has higher EO. If your new player (or combination of players) scores more than the old, you gain.

EO is irrelevant here. If you use it to make decisions, you're outsourcing decision-making to something that doesn't necessarily correlate with more points (and so higher OR for you), unless you know something about that that I don't.

(And if you were to pick 11 swords, you might find yourself even more active on here, because the game would be harder to play than just picking a template. But the rewards may be greater. And of course, the 11 best swords will usually include a lot of high-EO players)

Responded at greater length in the last thread, but managers are generally thinking about trying to predict the upcoming week's EO for players, rather than just using the last week's EO. For example, in DGW26, we all anticipated that most managers who didn't have Kane would bring him in and many would captain or even TC him. The captain poll, as well as the opinions expressed in many articles and podcasts, suggested this is what most would do.

Okay, so even if it's possible to predict what everyone else is going to do, why does it matter, especially in the light that we know a huge proportion of people will be copying other people (to various extents), rather than predicting the highest scorers. Are people trying to tap into the wisdom of the crowd, or what? If so, this doesn't seem like the best way to do it imo.

My view is that you can use 'wisdom of crowd' less when judging past EO, and more anticipating future EO.

Lingard, for example. His EO was very low the week before the blank, then suddenly at 50%. At this stage of the season, if you see a player of his profile with 500K transfers in, you know that's mainly active players and his EO is going to shoot up. Same with Antonio before the double.

Also I think it has a longer-term benefit with defenders (Justin, Martinez etc) where you can gain ground even with 50% EO players because folks don't prioritise transfers at the back.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 21 days ago

It seems this is more about transfers in, for you, then. Since that tells you who is popular with active players. EO is somewhat irrelevant, except as a by-product of transfers in (and presumably out)?

So I'd say transfers in is wisdom of crowds. I still think about EO in terms of risk, particularly for captaincy.

            • 8 Years

            What's the risk?

Do you always captain the highest expected EO player in your team? If not, why not? And why not the lowest EO player if EO is also about finding differentials?

And what else do you use EO for besides captaincy, then?

I really don't understand anything regarding people's use of EO in their decision-making. It always seems to be tied to the idea that a player is likely to score points (or not), at which point the whole thing implodes.

The only benefit I can see, personally, is in the wisdom of the crowd, but I don't think (projected) EO is representative of that anyway.

If everyone in your ML captained Pickford against Man City, it would be foolish to copy them (despite 200% EO). It would be risky to copy them instead of choosing a sensible choice. UNLESS they knew something about his points potential... Which tells me that the reason to care about EO must be about outsourcing the decision-making, or involving the wisdom of the crowd. Or otherwise, it's useless. No?

So a lot of it is about enjoyment of watching games. If Kane is going to be 180% EO and nobody else over 100, I'd usually rather captain him and enjoy the game rather than squirm with any points he gets. If it's likely to be more spread out (i.e. more even captain poll), I'll change based on other factors. I'd say it's about 50-50 over the season.

This game isn't just about points you get, it's about points other people get. The risk of avoiding players with high EO is that people score lots of points against you, and you don't match that with differentials.

WTF is this? « Network » lads in the article... They mention Mount, James, Rudiger and Azpi, but no one mentions Alonso.

    Why bother reading this thing?

      Slight over reaction there!?

So what. I'm sure they are all aware of Alonso and think he's a good punt - BUT, they just like others more.

      That simple really

I've been out of the loop the past week, enjoying a wee break from a chaotic season, but am I correct in thinking GW32 isn't a true blank as thise games will likely be played midweek?

    Is this BB team G2G? (2.5itb, 0FT)

    Martinez Mendy
    Dias Cancelo Digne Cresswell Dallas
    Bale Son Grealish Gundagon Rafinha
    Kane (c) DCL Watkins

Which players should I worry about getting a rest? I am ready to take hits to get rid of them, as this would be last chance to use the BB with WC in GW31 and go with more funds in first team.

First look at my team for a week: profusion of riches in attack and midfield for once; Raphina, Son, Mount, Bruno, Lingard; Kane Bamford DCL -
particularly as the oppo is Newcastle, Sheffield United, Albion and Palace, apart from Lingard (away to Wolves). If Son is fit, then is Lingard an "obvious sub? If not who?

Any thoughts here? Looking to WC in GW 31. I'm thinking Schmeichel to Mendy this week...

    Martinez
    Digne Rudiger Dallas
    Raphina Fernandes Gundogan Son
    Kane (C) Bamford Watkins

    Subs: Aubameyang, Dias, Veltman

Tottenham vs Southampton is now in 32

    Along with:

    Aston Villa vs Man City
    Chelsea vs Brighton
    Leicester vs West Brom

Spurs double will be eve + SOU
I believe Palace blank, someone check that for me please!

Already have Kane & Son, so that makes my moves pretty straight-forward. Already in place for Saturday anyway, have a Chelski defender, benching Cancelo (controversial!)

Southampton v Palace is the casualty. It could go to GW37 if Southampton don't make the Cup Final; but we are also waiting on whether the PL play tunes with the GW37 and 38 fixtures to give all clubs a home game with fans present, which would probably lead to a juicy DGW35.

Still no news on when the Villa-Everton rearranged fixture happens. It could have been another DGW fixture in 32 but presumably that won't happen given its exclusion from this announcement.

Have just done some anorak analysis on my Captain picks for the season. Each time I have always tried to match my captain against the best fixture. The main captain not to return has been Salah who I have captained 5 times for 32 points ! (that includes the doubling up) and no surprise this includes the awful home run. Fernandez ( 6 games) & Kane (7 games) way out there as the most dependable averaging 17 & 15 respectively. De Bruyne also not exactly hauling for his price at 50 points from 4 games, only averaging 12.5.

Afternoon guys, what is my best plan of action with this lot? Brought Auba in for last GW but quickly want rid of him.. plan is to WC in 31, so I'm happy making 2 transfers for a -4 this week as I'm quite far ahead in my leagues. Auba & Son the obvious two to lose or someone else? 1FT and 7.1m in the bank.

    Martinez
    Coufal - Stones - Shaw
    Son - Trossard - Raphina - Auba
    DCL - Kane - Bamford

Bench: Areola - Dunk - Dier - Soucek
