Ings, Walcott return from injury for Southampton

Danny Ings (£8.4m) is back from the treatment room for Southampton’s home clash against Burnley in Gameweek 30.

The striker was forced off the field back in Double Gameweek 27, after just 12 minutes of the Saints’ first fixture in that round of matches.

Ings is joined in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s starting XI by Theo Walcott (£5.8m), who had been sidelined since Gameweek 21.

James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m) has also been passed fit to start, having been a doubt due to a calf problem.

Budget goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£4.0m) – who could be a popular target for Gameweek 31 wildcarders – remains between the sticks for Southampton.

Ings is joined up front by Nathan Redmond (£6.4m), leaving new Scotland striker Che Adams (£5.8m) on the bench.

Ahead of kick off, Hasenhuttl said:

It was important to work through some issues during the break, we had enough players here to work on a few things. They had enough time off.

It’s important that Danny Ings and Theo Walcott have trained with us for the last few weeks, which has allowed me to rest a few guys who have travelled a lot.

You know you won’t get many chances against Burnley. Both teams need a win today, it gives them space to the relegation zone.

Burnley are unchanged from Gameweek 28, which is when both sides last played in the league.

Matej Vydra (£4.8m) makes a sixth consecutive start up front for the Clarets, partnering Chris Wood (£6.2m).

Jay Rodriguez (£5.8m) is on the Burnley bench, while Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) remains out with injury.

Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) and Jack Cork (£5.0m) are both fit enough to make the matchday squad.

“Some of the players got some sharpness back during the break, that rest was needed and hopefully we’ll see that in the performance.

“We have to work hard for everything we get, the minimum requirement is maximum effort. We have picked up results against big sides but now we have to deliver on a weekly basis. We are on a good run and we need consistency of performance.” – Sean Dyche

Southampton XI (4-2-2-2): Forster; Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Diallo; Walcott, Armstrong; Ings, Redmond.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson; Wood, Vydra.

Probably won’t work as I’m most likely going with a bench fodder 3rd forward so want a decent 5th mid to have the option to play 3-5-2 as well as 4-4-2

Leeds scored in all the reverse fixtures against City Liverpool and United. Think he's a way better choice than Neto personally unless you want to make a transfer in that spot.

Not seeing anyone else much. If Bowen was nailed he might be an interesting punt if you didn't have Lingard. But that's a counterfactual 🙂

While queuing at the bakery (it’s a long process here in France) I put this WC team together. It’s a first draft overlooking the fixtures.0.3 ITB if you wonder.

    Martinez-Forster
    TAA-Dias-Cresswell-Dallas-Andersen
    KdB-Fernandes-Maddison-Jota-Raphinha
    Kane-Lacazette-Brewster

It’s missing Chelsea defense, Brewster is bench fodder. But is it going the right way?

Yup right direction. Shaw and CHE def in for Dias and Dallas. Arsenal team as a while is not really appealing even though they have the fixtures. Similar thinking with wolves but I've put in Coady for now

Perhaps best to go back to basics instead of shoehorning TAA

    Mendy (Forster)
Tierney - Rudiger - Coufal (Coady, Phillips)
    Salah (C) - Bruno - Son - Jota - Gundo
    Kane - Antonio (Iheanacho)

That's also what I am thinking about, start with Phillips, and then switch to TAA when I release some money from 35. or 36. and Liverpool have even better fixtures during that stretch. Tierney could be injured though.

It either him or Vardy, and both kind of have alternative in Jota and Ihenacho, so it's not an easy one. I'll probably chop and change between Vardy, Salah and KDB considering the fixture in the specific gameweek. Rest of team should be settled, so I see room for using transfers that way.

That seems to be main point of difference on WC - I imagine the trend will be to include him now. Most find him extremely hard to pass by if there is a semblance of form.

Personally think there's an argument for holding back to 33 and make the move from Son if it allows you more power in defence.

There’s no point us getting the occasional var favourable decision in games we’re losing v city.

When yet again a stinker of a decision scuppers us in close key games. Never a penalty as he was fouled first.

The exact point of VAR is to replay the sequence, see the first foul as causing the second and come to the right decision!

          Hmmmmm

WC would really be a reshuffle of defence wouldn't it and a budget mid? I'd be quite tempted to hold off - you have FH for 33 no? Go now and you're saving yourself a minus 4 almost unless you have big plans.

Yeah, no major changes on WC feels awkward. Only exciting thing about WC would be addition of Jota and Trent 😀

Will keep FH for GW35 (if incase its a big double). No Man City players will help to navigate GW33 I guess.

That said just tweaking on WC could be smart

My last 3 WCs have been disastrous reshapings of perfectly good teams to hit fixture runs. Cost me dearly all of them. The power chip works both ways 🙂

Planning - won't happen fo course - to be much more conservative on WC next time around.

Alternatives available. Dont like the rotation risk with their attacking players.

Have to navigate without them just for 6GWs only.

Fixture congestion is huge issue for City, expect Pep to make 6 changes every gameweek, no single player bar Ederson will start all the remaining games
